Huckabee, Romney go another round
Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee continued tussling in Iowa today on the eve of the last Republican debate before the Jan. 3 caucuses.
In response to a new Romney TV ad that hits him on illegal immigration, Huckabee introduced a new supporter -- Jim Gilchrist, the leader and founder of the Minuteman Project, a controversial group that has sent members to the borders of both Mexico and Canada to watch for illegal immigrants.
Huckabee also told reporters that the Romney ad is a sign of "desperation" by the former Massachusetts governor, who has fallen behind Huckabee in the polls.
The Romney campaign repeated that Huckabee's record on illegal immigration is fair game, and an issue on which voters deserve to know the differences among the candidates.
Romney, Huckabee, and the other Republicans will debate Wednesday afternoon in a forum sponsored by The Des Moines Register.
A new poll out this afternoon from Rasmussen Reports gives Huckabee a 39 percent-23 percent lead over Romney among Iowa Republicans, not quite as large as the 22-percentage-point lead that a Newsweek poll released Friday gave Huckabee.

I like the way McCain's campaign addressed this attack against Huckabee: "It's interesting that Mitt Romney would attack anyone on immigration when he's on his third position."
Nevertheless, this approach is going to backfire for Romney. Iowa voters will see this as nothing more than desperation.
We lose track of the facts here. In some edge cases it is a simple issue of corporate greed, but most companies that are employing illegal aliens are doing so to try to provide affordable products and services to the US market. Walmart was found to be hiring illegal aliens and still everyone shops there because they can save $2 on whatever it is that they want to buy today. This perpetuates the cycle. But the reality is that Americans need affordable places to buy goods, they need to be able to afford their food and other essential products and services. This is where the illegal immigrant pool is most dutifully employed. If we simply add this cost back into the system, food prices rise, cost of basic services rise, and then so does the consumer price index and then inflation. As a nation we need to look at adjusting our economic system to make US workers more competitive in these industries without raising the manufacturer's costs. As other price pressures such as fuel prices continue to diminish the US consumer's purchasing power the need for less expensive labor is going to become more and more.
Maybe it is time to look at subsidizing the salaries of certain classes of workers employed in jobs that affect staple needs such as food production. This way we can make sure that our lower and middle class does not get over extended in these difficult times and provide an incentive to employers to hire citizens. If you eliminate the demand the supply will eventually find another more receptive market.
Because Huckebee and his supporters are busy distributing bigoted and salacious material about Mormons, as well as engaging in push polling, one wonders about his Christian beliefs. Can he win in a fair area based on his record and his values?
Lest we all forget this is not a battle between religons or churches. This is a representation of which man or woman will best represent the affairs of the United States of America for the next four years. Which person when put under pressure will make the correct decision with the best information available regardless of popularity? Which person will make our country better than it is today in their four years as president? Which person can be trusted the most?
I'd rather have a president who is not afraid to be in the center of it all regardless on the subject, and one who puts the decision in the american public's hands, than one who sits idly by and avoids those sensitive subjects.
Romney is just showing why he really is head and shoulders above the rest.
The Huckabee, tax, immigration and anti-mormon material has soured my support of him for the republican nomination.
I know Romney would be a great President because he did such a great job as Governor. You can only tell someones future on their past behavior. He has never pushed his religion on anyone as Govenor so why would that be any different as President. He has great values and he would make a great President.
I agree with Brian S. Huckabee’s use of religious slander and defamation as a campaign tactic to win votes is not only souring, it is downright tacky.
Iowan’s Listen Up!
Anyone who buys into that does not understand what this country represents and truly does not understand what being a Christian is all about. In fact this “Faith” issue is not even about Christianity. It is about protecting religious freedom. Huckabee’s tactics seem to show oppression to a religion in this country. It is a total turnoff. Romney has done a great job explaining how he feels about all of this. I could care less what someone’s religion is as long as they value the freedom of it in this country and do not use it to oppress others or justify violence like the Jihadists do. But to use someone’s personal religious beliefs as a twist to win votes, Come on Huckabee – is that how Christians treat each other?
Iowans,
You are preferring Huckabee for the wrong reasons. You will set a precedence that will set this Country in reverse. You have to be able to see through the woods, the man is the real fanatic/populist (similar to Pat Robertson). Don't feed the beast, he will not endure and will fall & disappear as a fragmented meteorite in the night, you'll see..
There is absolutely nothing negative about this ad. Mike seems to be proud of the positions depicted. The media of all types has been anti-Romney (Mormon) from the beginning, but to call this negative is hilarious...it actually makes me mad. Mitt Romney is a fabulous candidate. It would be so good to have someone we could be proud of in the office that has the God given intelligence to deal with the multitude of national and world-wide problems. Go Mitt!!!!!
Huckabee has never slandered the Mormon Faith or Mitt Romeny. Push polling was done by a group outside of his campaign, and he called for a stop to it publicly. Mike calling himself a Christian leader is nothing against Romney, its what the media has made him out to be.. Huckabee has gotten more "religious" and "God" questions than anybody in the campaign, just because he was a minister.. People forget that hes been a Governor and Lt.Governor since 1992.
Romney though is showing his true colors.
The reason this add against Huckabee hurts so much is because every bit of it is true. This is a subject that the american voter absolutely has a right to hearing about. Some people may think this is some kind of slam piece but that's hardly the case when it's true. Romney did'nt say anything that could be construed in the wrong way. The fact is that Huckabee has increased taxes during his governorship, pardoned criminals because they "found" Jesus, and encouraged illegal immigrations through his pork barrel policies, the worst being where he was pushing for free college tuition for the children of illegals..
Mike Huckabee has a very sordid past and the sooner America comes to realize this the better. Especially you IOWA!

Huckabee has flown under the radar for so long because he was deemed irrelevant. Now that he is a front runner, the voters have the right to know his record on immigration, taxes, spending, pardons, etc, and it is not good. Then there is is flip flop on the Cuba embargo and numerous ethical complaints. If the DNP won't do it (they actually want Huckabee to be the nominee), and if Giuliani won't do it (he benefits from a Huckabee win in Iowa), then Romney has to do it. He is the only one with the resources to expose Huckabee, and he was justified in doing so.
Huckabee does not have the organization or fundraising skills that Mitt Romney has. Nor does he have the execution skill that Romney possesses.
In desperation, Huckabee played the bigot card, (religion card), and joined with the Main Stream Media to get the word out. He seeks to stir up hatred rather than offer a better reason to follow him. He does this because he can't stand toe-to-toe with Mitt. As Charles Krauthammer from Nation Online pointed out, “None of the other candidates knew how to play the religion card, or at least had the decency not to use it.”
For a guy who has barely raised a million dollars, can anyone tell me how he has jumped up in so many polls and in so many states all of the sudden? Even Huckabee can't explain why he is doing so well, except to claim divine intervention from above.
Smells like fraud
The evangelists are jumping to Huckabee because they don't like the Mormons. The sad fact is that many of them have closed minds and think that they have the right Jesus. The Bible says that ..."whosoever believeth in Him (Jesus) shall not perish but have everlasting life." I'm a convert to the Mormon church and Christ is the center of everything in this religion. People need to go and visit any Mormon church anywhere and find it for yourself. Who are they to tell me I'm praying to the wrong Jesus? I have my own personal relationship with Jesus and no one can tell me it's a wrong Jesus! If they have the right Jesus, why do they have different Bibles? Why do their leaders accumulate so much wealth and even show it on their bodies? I"ve met many of them and they are self-righteous and close minded. I think Huckabee is a nice guy, but his surge is but a wave that will bring him back to shore. The race is just starting.
The fact is that Mitt Romney has a history of making turnarounds and succeeding. He did it over and over again in business, he did it again in the Olympics, he did it as governor, and he will do it in Washington. Huck's solution to the boarder problem is Chuck Norris, for goodness sake! It may be funny, but it really won't help our country if we are the laughing stock of the world. Huck did a poor job in Arkansas. Mitt did a fabulous job in Massachusetts. Mitt succeeds. Huckabee doesn't. Who will you vote for?
If Huckabee is nominated, I'm switiching parties and will further understnad what a joke the "religous right" has become as they indirectly put another Clinton in the White House.
It will be the country's loss if Mitt Romney is not our next President.
Mitt 2008
Michael Huckabee once accepted $40,000 in contributions from the tobacco giant R.J. Reynolds to campaign against a national cigarette tax proposed by Hillary Clinton. But later, Mr. Huckabee ignored his sponsors and imposed his own tax on cigarettes.
During his years in the governor's mansion in Little Rock, Mr. Huckabee granted convicted criminals 1,033 pardons and commutations of sentence — including a pardon for a reckless driving charge by the Rolling Stone Keith Richard. The number amounts to about twice as many acts of amnesty as his three predecessors combined, among them President Clinton.
While governor, Mr. Huckabee was also the subject of 16 ethics complaints that forced him to pay $1,000 in fines for failing to report outside income and payments from his campaign fund, and he was investigated for flying Arkansas state airplanes when on personal and political business.
These facts, which have been an embarrassment to Mr. Huckabee — who is now the favorite to win the GOP stakes in Iowa and who in a new national CNN poll yesterday pulled alongside the Republican front-runner, Mayor Giuliani — are the latest to emerge as the former Arkansas governor's rivals crawl through the minutiae of Mr. Huckabee's past in the hopes of turning up damaging stories to stop him in his tracks.
More if you have the stomach for it.
I am a Mormon and have always been happy to vote for an evangelical where I feel he or she is the best candidate. I do this despite a difference in religion. Why is it so hard for evangelicals to do the same? Mitt Romney brings an extraordinary skill set to the table which I think will be extremely useful to solve many of the problems we are facing today - social security, the deficit, healthcare, immigration, etc. Please have the decency to look past differences in religion to see the person and the skills they bring to the table!

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and if you notice, the name of the religion (yes, religion) is Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints. What is not clear? Why can't people get it?
Bottom line: I believe in the solid leadership of a president that receives his wisdom from the Scriptures (i.e. Huckabee) than one that receives his from following voter trends (All others), and thus constantly flip-flopping. We need a leader in these grave and dangerous days.
Just a little help about the Huckabee question on whether Mormons believe Christ and Lucifer are brothers (something we as Mormons were taught since we were little kids).
Here is a link from LDS.org, the LDS church's Web site that gives an answer to the question, scroll down to the second quesiton:

If Huckabee really wants to ask a question to Mitt Romney, he should ask him how he felt the many times before 1990 when he went to the Mormon temple and Protestant Ministers were portrayed as Satan's helpers (teaching Adam and Eve Protestant theology that is, of course, authored by Satan).
Huckabee is a total disgrace in my eyes. Attacking someone else on their religious beliefs. Please, show me just one time in the Bible, where Jesus put down and ridiculed ANYONE for what they believed? I have read the Bible many times and have never come across one, not one. I did not know that Jesus died a second time and put Huckabee in His place - to judge the world and others. He is a hypocrit, just like Jesus called the "preachers" of His day.
Furthermore, I have NEVER heard Mitt Romney disgrace or sour anyone because of their religion. My hat is off to Mitt. For being under so much scrutiny, he has kept his CHARACTER in tact. Huckabee could learn a lesson from this Mormon. Go Mitt, we are behind you all the way.
The reality is that Romney is the only candidate that could beat Hillary. While the Huckabites attack Romney, they are only pointing the guns inward. The truth of the matter is that the Repubicans will be very lucky to win another election, and they won't do it with Mike.
What I like about Romney is he is a true conservative. He will set the country right, he has no shady past, and he walks the walk of respect and tolerance.
A vote for Huckabee and guliani will be a vote for Hillary. The undecideds will not come out to vote for Mike or Rudy.
I think I'm starting to figure out Huckabee. He knew his record as governor was so bad that he needed to hide it as long as possible. So he waited until November to remind the Iowa evangelicals that he's also an evangelical, just like them, and therefore, lo and behold, they should vote for him. Good plan. He shoots up in the polls. But wait, there's still 3 weeks to go now, and the truth about his lousy leadership in Arkansas is getting out. So the question begs, did he peak too soon?
I think highly of both Mr. Romney and Mr. Huckabee, but I will most likely vote for Huckabee. In general, people whose job it is to wield political power are not high on my favorites list. But when I contrast the relative grace and class of the candidates with the black-and-white all-or-none small-mindedness of the majority of their supporters who post on the internet, I have to laugh.
This is an important read:
In August of 2005, I was called for an interview by THV-TV News out of Little Rock Arkansas to comment on Governor Mike Huckabee's comments complaining about an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on local chicken plants, which resulted in the arrest of 119 illegal aliens. What I said during the interview is even more relevant today "Governor Huckabee is known nationally as an illegal alien's best friend!"
At the time, Mike Huckabee was known nationally for supporting in-state tuition for illegal aliens, which is massively opposed by American voters four to one! This plan forces American taxpayers to subsidize tuition for illegal aliens, thus replacing American students in the limited seats in colleges, while providing the wrong message and encouraging more people to illegally immigrate and bring their children into the U.S. to be trained for jobs, it is illegal for them to have!
The fact that Mike Huckabee would support a policy change despised by 80% of those he swore to represent in public office says a lot about what we could expect from the man as President.
Furthermore, his open denouncement of ICE raids in Arkansas is probably the result of his heavy financial support from Open Borders corporations like Tyson Foods. In Arkansas, the chicken processing lobby is so powerful they call it "Big Chicken".
While the public was cheering the raids, Tyson Foods was upset about ICE raids and so was their bought and paid for politician Mike Huckabee!
Tyson Foods Inc., has their global headquarters located in Springdale, Arkansas and they are the worlds largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork. They were large contributors to Mike Huckabee as Governor and now their federal political action committee, TYPAC, is backing his campaign for President.
Tyson Foods Inc. is one of the most egregious corporate violators of our Federal laws against hiring illegals in America!
In 2003, the U.S. Justice Department claimed that 15 Tyson plants in nine states had been conspiring since 1994 to recruit illegal immigrants, and that this practice was known by senior executives at Tyson corporate headquarters. It was determined in court that Tyson managers had been intentionally working with organized crime elements and temporary service agencies to import illegal alien workers, replace their American workers, and drive down wages. Tyson agreed to join the basic pilot program to screen new employees in 2004, but later raids continued to find large numbers of illegal aliens working for Tyson!
Earlier this year, the company supported the thrice-failed "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" amnesties that were pushed in the U.S. Senate. These legislative attempts to legalize Tyson's illegal labor workforce failed due to massive public opposition with Zogby polls showing only 3% of Americans approving of how Congress was handling the issue! The backlash was so massive that angry calls to lawmakers, which were ranging 50 to 1 opposed, overloaded and shut down the entire Capital phone system!
Mike Huckabee is now experiencing a surge in the polls as GOP core voters continue to abandon John McCain and Rudy Giuliani for their pro Amnesty pro illegal alien records and stances. This is bringing Huckabee's immigration stances into the limelight for scrutiny and his campaign is fully aware that missteps on this issue can send him back down the ladder like McCain and Giuliani.
That is why his campaign has released the "The Secure America Plan" which details his 9-point plan to facilitate the "enforcement of our immigration laws and results in the attrition of the illegal immigrant population"
This is exactly what America wants to hear, America wants to hear about reducing the number or illegal aliens in America. Americans want illegal aliens to return to their home nations as current law dictates!
However, there is a big problem with Huckabee's plan. While most of the provisions will be positively received by the American public, especially voters, his promises to crack down on employers, build a fence, and bolster the border patrol are all nullified by positions number 3 and 9.
Huckabee makes it clear that illegal aliens will have to leave the U.S. However, what he is advocating is the 'touch back' provision which was a trick fielded by the supporters of the failed "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" amnesty bills in the U.S. Senate this year.
In position #9, Huckabee says he would increase visas and expedite immigration processes so "those patiently and responsibly seeking to come here legally will not have to wait decades to share in the American Dream"
Such changes would clearly increase legal immigration levels, which already stand at 1.4 million per year, making America the most generous nation in the world for legal immigration. The majority of the American public, while generally supportive of legal immigrants, is in no mood for such a massive expansion of legal immigration levels considering the intense public backlash against illegal immigration.
Huckabee's intent to expedite legal immigration ties into the real problem with his plan. This is revealed in item #3, where he would grant amnesty to illegal aliens by having them sign up with the government and then leave the U.S. for a day or two and later on pick up new documents across the border to walk back in and say "Look at me! I came in legally this time!"
What a devilish farce! Millions of illegal aliens in America would quickly have no fear of immigration law enforcement and would be on the "path to citizenship" receiving benefits at the taxpayers' expense. This provision would in effect nullify all of the other immigration enforcement promises of Mike Huckabee.
The mere fact that Mike Huckabee's campaign is imitating the tactics that the pro Amnesty lobby in Washington, DC deployed earlier this year tells us exactly who he serves and that he is willing to try and deceive the American public to accomplish his political agenda! Mike Huckabee has is now promoting the Pence Plan that we call SHAMNESTY!
One more President like that in the White House and we can kiss America goodbye. We will have millions of illegal aliens who have become untouchable by immigration authorities and millions more on the way once America has shown she is defenseless against the Global corporations pushing this agenda!
It gets worse, according to Michelle Malkin's article "Meet the GOP's Border Control Cross-Dressers" (Dec. 11, 2007) Huckabee joins McCain and Guiliani on the dishonest pro amnesty politician front!
It appears that Mike Huckabee has been pandering to the Open Borders Hispanic racist group LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), where he has promised them an 'open door' policy. He has also criticized state legislators in Arkansas who wanted to require proof of citizenship to register to vote! That really takes the cake when you think about the fact Mike Huckabee wants illegal aliens to be able to vote!
Even more disturbing is Mike Huckabee's decision to follow the deplorable lead of Senator's Harry Reid and Ted Kennedy by deriding Americans who are concerned about illegal immigration and opposed to the Senate AMNESTY bills as "driven by racism or nativism."
In an attempt to build street credibility, the Huckabee campaign claims they were inspired to create their plan from an article by Center for Immigration Studies (Cis.org) Mark Krikorian. While Mr. Krikorian is renowned for his concepts of attrition enforcement, he is opposed to the Touchback amnesty provisions Huckabee's team built in as this measure would nullify all of the other enforcement provisions listed! Mr. Krikorian, while cited as a source by Mike Huckabee's team, would probably call the plan another "No Amnesty Amnesty".
Mike Huckabee is clearly an Open Borders fanatic.
This is why there is a shockwave moving through the immigration enforcement movement after hearing of the endorsement of the Huckabee campaign by Co-Founder of the original Minuteman Project, Jim Gilchrist.
The embarrassing truth is that Jim Gilchrist has forced distance between himself and the vast majority of other groups and leaders in the immigration enforcement movement over the last year because of his egotistical, unstable, destructive, and growingly bizarre behavior. His behind the scenes actions have created a great deal of alarm from groups such as ALIPAC who were a part of the original Minuteman effort and who have supported Mr. Gilchrist in the past.
After Jim Gilchrist split with co-founder Chris Simcox of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, he quickly made enemies out of any group that refused to take a side in the conflict. He would not respect the neutrality of other sovereign groups and adopted an "with us or against us" stance that drove many away.
Jim Gilchrist's last attempt to muster Minutemen volunteers fell apart during the Laredo Texas operations he launched. While the opening day had many attendees, within one week there were less than ten volunteers on the border and Gilchrist himself was not even present most of the time.
Since that time, Jim has been engaged in a bitter battle against the Executive Board of his 501(c) organization after they terminated him from his position as director, which has thrown the whole organization into court battles. While most of our movement was neck deep in the battle against the Senate "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" amnesty bills, Gilchrist was busy sending out his next wave of bitter e-mails decrying the actions of the "hijackers" of his organization.
Many of us in the movement have been keeping quiet about these problems, the threatening e-mails, and personal attacks, hoping that Jim Gilchrist would fade into the background, where his reckless behavior and failed organization could do no further harm to the movement, which is much bigger than Minuteman. We had hoped that his initial contributions to the cause in Minuteman 1 could be saved from his actions of late. Today, the rest of the nation is painfully learning what we know about Jim Gilchrist, due to his endorsement of pro amnesty Open Borders Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.
Since the Minuteman Project is a tax-free nonprofit organization, which is prohibited by law from endorsing candidates, one has to wonder why Jim Gilchrist is making endorsements for President, which will surely be challenged by other Presidential campaigns and pro amnesty groups.
Perhaps Jim just skimmed over the Huckabee plan like many Americans will do and fell for the bait? It is likely that he was so happy to hear from a Presidential campaign in the midst of his isolation that he jumped at the opportunity to be relevant again?
Jim Gilchrist and Mike Huckabee have made a terrible mistake by supporting a Presidential campaign which has stances in favor of "touchback" amnesty for illegal aliens, benefits for illegal aliens, voting access for illegal aliens, "comprehensive immigration reform" amnesty, expanded visa programs, and more legal immigration. They are both attempting to give the illegal aliens, the US Chamber of Commerce, and their supporting groups like Tyson Foods, LULAC, and La Raza exactly what they want, while trying to dupe the American public.
As Americans representing the 80% of our fellow countrymen and women who oppose this radical Open Borders agenda, we must do all we can to expose Mike Huckabee's true stances and record. We must also make it clear to Jim Gilchrist that he has just erased any positive contributions he may have made in the past to the immigration enforcement movement by lending his support to an 'Illegal Alien's best friend'.

I like how Mitt Romney, as governor of MA, refused to give the former president of Iran a police escort and state sponsored security when he was invited to speak at Harvard. I think that took a lot of guts!!! Romney showed he's not afraid to stand up and defend American pride even when it may be unpopular (among the Bostonian intellectual snobs). The former Iranian president was responsible for untold cruelty and jihadism and Romney showed him there was a governor in the U.S. that wasn't afraid to say "you are not welcome here."
No one is interested in the truth about Mormons. If people are honest they should just go to the LDS.org website and learn about Mormons from Mormons. People are too lazy and biased to do that. The evangelicals are so anxious to perpetuate lies about Mormons even though they know they are lies. What would Jesus do? Not what the evangelicals are doing! Maybe I should try to learn about the baptist from the Taliban?
Scribes, Pharisees and Huckabees! Hypocrites!!!
What a bigot is Huckabee! He pretends to now know much about the Mormon faith (probably sponsored his own anti-Mormon cult classes), and then naively questions a doctrine out of context that he knows would be incendiery!
He is alienating the very people whose support he needs if he somehow gets the nomination! That is 6 Million less votes he should have in a general election!

I can't believe what I am reading on this blog.
SCARY THOUGHT FOR THE DAY #26:
Huckabee and Guiliani have nothing for the economy compared with Romney's business and economic acumen. Will you still be complaining about Romney's faith when they lay you off and foreclose your home? Get real, and don't get me started about Huckabee as a foreign policy disaster. Huckabee and Ahmadinejad sitting across at a table???? That's classic, what a nightmare.
Take all of the t-shirts mocking Bush you see at the mall and insert Huckabee's face. That's what college kids may be wearing until 2012. Bush haters are going to LOVE Huckabee, what a goober...there's a good image for the Republican stigma. Are you kidding me??
Why don't we all vote for an inferior candidate merely because he's not LDS. Evangelicals are going to ruin this nation!!
