Huckabee says Romney is 'dishonest'
By Susan Milligan, Globe Staff
INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Mike Huckabee called chief rival Mitt Romney "dishonest'' today for what Huckabee said were gross distortions of his record, and said voters should question whether Romney would tell the truth if he were elected president.
"If a person will become president by being dishonest, just remember, if he becomes president, he likely will not be honest on the job,'' Huckabee told voters at a restaurant campaign stop.
So apparently distressed at Romney's criticism, Huckabee refused even to commit to voting for Romney for president if the former Massachusetts governor wins the Republican nomination. "I would never vote for a Democrat in the presidential election next year,'' Huckabee said. But asked if he would prefer an honest Democrat to a "dishonest'' Republican, Huckabee refused to answer.
Spokesman Kevin Madden said Romney was accurately pointing out aspects of Huckabee's record that would take the country in the "wrong direction'' if continued from the Oval Office.
"Mike Huckabee's record is his record and his alone. it's a troubling record, but the facts about his tax hikes and spending binges are true, and the differences many Republicans have with his positions are very real,'' Madden said.
Romney, who made a series of quick coffee-shop stops in Iowa today, has stepped up his attacks on Huckabee as the former Arkansas governor has surged in the Iowa polls. A Huckabee win in Iowa would give life to his shoestring campaign and imperil Romney's chances in New Hampshire and beyond.

thanks marie thompson...Im a naturalize citizen and a first time voter..and i'm leaning much on Romney because he addresses substantive issues rather than calling names and or attacking opponents personally. Your comment really has made me and my husband looked more on Romney.
Oscar, your intitiled to your opinion but if you are going to call someone phony, better give some examples if you want to have any credibility. If its so "Known" then there should be plenty of examples. Simpley repeating an accusation is the same as giving evidence. What are some examples?
From what I have heard Huckabee has not represented himself as being a graduate of a Seminary. (I am a graduate) He has said that he went one year and then went on to pastor a church. Southern Baptist Churches do accept pastors without a Seminary degree.

Judicial Watch is turning out to be part of the Washington insiders I see. All those issues listed have been covered and repudiated at least two times in the last two months.
Governor Huckabee followed the Romney look alike, Bill Clinton's reign as Governor. Before that Mike had done battle with the Clinton Dynasty when running for Lieutenant Governor. The tactics of the this Dynasty are cruel and unusual. They had set up trumped up ethical charges, and continued to do so even after Governor Huckabee left office.
As to the fiscal record of Mike Huckabee as Governor of Arkansas, this campaign aid of Romney's lied or knows nothing but the lies his lacking morals boss has flung out. In the 10.5 years Mike was Governor, the State spending went up at 47%. Nation wide the average per state went up 95%. This happened at a time in which Mike had followed Bill Clinton and his clone Clinton left in office, Jim Tucker, who was removed by criminal charges.
During the 10.5 years of Governing (4 yrs Romney) Mike was able to improve Roads from 49th in the nation to 37th; Mike improved the park system; Mike raised the health levels of the children of the State; Under State Supreme Court Order, Mike moved the educational system from the 19th century into the 21st century, with equity for all children.
There is not a better character to have ever ran for President since George Washington. Mike Huckabee will be known at the end of his Presidency as the Second Founding Father of America, as his vision will bring this Nation out of the abyss it is in into the full Glory of it's days. I challenge you to read his positions at his web site www.mikehuckabee.com Also read his CSIS speech on foreign affairs, it will astound you. If you wish to keep the 2nd amendment, vote for Huckabee. Everyone else will not protect our constitution.
Romney the Phony:
Lifelong hunter: hunted twice, once as a teen and once on the campaign trail.
Claims to be against homosexual "marriage", was the first governor in history to order such "marriages".
Complains about Huckabee and Meth laws, but hides the fact that Arkansas laws have much severer penalties against Meth dealers than those in Massachusetts.

Wow Grassboots.....you'd better get your facts straight or you'll be looking kinda silly! And thanks so much for making sure that your amazingly intellectual blog was posted 3 times.....I'd might have missed it! Dang!
Anyone who thinks this nation would be better off with a dishonest pastor who openly preached against other religions (hmmmm......isn't that something the founding fathers would have frowned upon?) and finds himself on lists citing the most dishonest politicians of our day, might want to reconsider.
I support Mitt Romney because of his past experiences in fixing things. He is a master "mechanic" in business, economics, and social issues. He can put together a team of experts in any situation, including the war on terror. This CEO mentality is what this country needs, agreed?
...and i'm leaning much on Romney because he addresses substantive issues rather than calling names and or attacking opponents personally.
All I see here on the TV and in my mailbox here in Iowa are ads and flyers from the Romney campaign saying how bad Huckabee is--not saying ANYTHING about his stances on the issues or where he wants to steer America if he was President.
Nuts to Romney.
"Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption..." Funny, very funny. Except you forgot to mention that Judicial Watch is a group that is funded by a conservative billionaire. It is also run by someone, Tom Fitton, who lied about his academic credentials. Trying to claim that Judicial Watch is non partisan is like claiming moveon.org is non partisan. If you're going to use someone or some organization to bolster your argument, try to use a source that is impeachable and not supported and financed by extreme partisan sponsors. So much for YOUR credibility marie. Why not try doing your own research instead regurgitating spoon fed propaganda?
Mitt Romney is a phony who will say and do anything to get himself elected. He has changed his views to pander to whichever group of voters he was after at the time, and is the type of candidate that cannot be trusted. Grassroots listed some of his flat out lies, but Romney has exaggerated and stretched the truth on many occasions as well, including the newest ads he's running against McCain in NH. If you're one of those people asking "how Romney has lied", you've obviously not done your homework on the man; just google "Romney" and "lies", and spend a few hours reading up on his transgressions. If you truly are an honest voter, and truly care about who you vote for, research this guy before you vote for him, and I'm sure you'll change your mind.
To find out the truth about Romney I would suggest the National Review. They are a respected conservative magazine that has endorsed Romney.

Mitt Romney has run an almost exlusively substantive and positive campaign. Even in his recent CONTRAST ads he has not resorted to name calling and personal attacks as so many others including Huckabee have done towards Romney. It is frustrating that Romney recieves no credit for thit positive show of character. Everything Romney said in regard to Huckabees record or anyone elses for that matter is completely accurate. Instead of calling Romney a lier Huckabee should explain what the facts are in regards to the points of his record that have been called into question.
"CONTRAST ads..." Hilarious. This is like when ketchup was declared a vegetable.
"Everything Romney said in regard to Huckabees record or anyone elses for that matter is completely accurate. " Yeah, right. Let's see:

Strange definition of accurate. The sad fact is that ANY politician will say whatever he or she needs to say to make the their opponents look bad. And if they can't find concrete evidence (Mr. Romney), they'll use innuendo and inferrence because they know that there are people who will believe the most outrageous soundbites without doing doing any sort of research into the validity of their statements.
Goodness, the tax-and-spend, pro-war Republicans are having a go at each other.
Here is what Ron Paul is up against:
"The men the American public admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth."
-- H. L. Mencken
DOLE VS. HUCK
Unexpected late intervention by Bob Dole in the Iowa Republican caucuses confirms that Mike Huckabee may have blundered by assailing President George W. Bush's "arrogant bunker mentality" in international affairs.
"Why have you joined the 'Bush bashers'?" Dole asked in a letter to Huckabee that he made public. Dole, until now neutral in the 2008 contest, called Huckabee's critique of Bush policy in Foreign Affairs magazine a "perfect example of 20-20 hindsight."
Dole, who won the 1996 Iowa caucuses en route to the presidential nomination, told Huckabee that Iowans would not approve of his attack on Bush (who still gets 80 percent approval from Republicans). He concluded the letter with typical Dole humor: "P.S. I lost the General [election] in '96, so what do I know?"

For a refreshing "break-a-way" from politics, why not visit my church web-site. I have been pastoring since I was 23. I am in my 34th year. I doubt if I will run for president, but it seems that I need to pray for whoever is elected. God Bless!

I HATE the Globe. They Shame our State...nothing but a bunch of Marxist nut-headed Liberals. The fact that they criticize Romney signals to the rest of Americans to go out an vote for him. If the Globe supports something, there's a 99% chance it is bad for America.
They know Romney is contender #1 in this thing.
And know this: No one will mobilize the numbers of supporters like the Romney organization in Iowa and New Hampshire. No one. This is a done deal folks.
Is Nader running this year?
Romney a phoney? He was specifically searched out and chosen to turn around the scandal plagued olympics precisely because he was extensively known as a leader of unquestionable integrity!
Stripping and flipping corporate assets is the exact opposite of good management.
This is not how you build a nation's economy.
These are not the 'skills' that our country needs.
The Mormon stuff is just plain sad. Magic underwear, secret handshakes, their pantheon of gods, the lost tribes of Israel coming to the Americas in
magic boats, polygamy, a history of institutionalized racism ...
The only way I'm voting for a guy who wears magic underwear is if he's got a cape and big red S on his chest.
So sickof politics you think "Judicial Watch" is not non-partisan as I had claimed in my earlier post. Sorry to rain on your parade, but you are the one about to loose credibilty. Members of both parties are listed as CORRUPT and most you will agree are obvious choicse. You can see yourself in the attached post, but to summarize:
R's: Craig, Giuliani; Huckabee;"Scooter" Libby,
D's: H. Clinton; Conyers; Feinstein, Barack Obama; Nancy Pelosi; Harry Reid.
They give a well supported and reasoned statement on why Huckabee is included. Please click on the attached site.

From their web site, "Judicial Watch, Inc., a conservative, non-partisan educational foundation, promotes transparency, accountability and integrity in government, politics and the law." So non-partisan perhaps, but as a self-described conservative organization, it naturally has a right-wing, if not specifically Republican, political agenda.
So to appear even handed, they choose as the most corrupt, ALL the leaders of the Democratic party, the least conservative Republican presidential candidate, the Republican least likely to be elected in the general election, and two Republican felons out of power. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that this site can't be taken seriously
Hey Ruthie,
Sayin' ain't provin. Romney is a phony. I listed three examples of his twistings which, so far, have gone unrefuted.
Huckabee is slipping as you'll see in a new MSNBC poll being published today. (http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/1230IowaPoll1230.html). I'm glad that his past record is being examined and the truth is coming to light. Nice guy but definately not qualified to be President of the United States.
Additionally, someone running as President needs to lead the entire country and not discriminate against an entire segment of the population. Discriminating against Mormons (who number at 5mm+ in this country now) because of their religious beliefs is un-American.
Luckily, we also have a Harvard educated scholar with real executive experience, familiar with making tough decisions, who is also running as the nominee.
I can accept that Romney has evolved on some of his positions. I realize that he was a governor in one of the most liberal states and dutifully represented the citizens living there. He's now campaigning to represent a very broad demographic and likewise has broadened his appeal. Are we going to disregard this extremely qualified candidate because he exaggerated his hunting experience or something else so petty? I'd like to see any of you nay-sayers put in front of the American media for 8 hours a day for 12-15 months and see if you ever slip up. I believe that Mitt Romney truly is a remarkable person and can make a difference as our President. He has improved almost everything he has been involved with during his life. Don't get caught up in the media smearing of his words - do the research as I have. He is the most qualified candidate. Romney has my vote.

I love how you Baptists and Mormons are all making your cases for the Huckster and Romney. They are both neo-nazi conservatives who I would fear as my president. I am African-Amercian and neither of these guys would represent me and the other 12 percent of the country who is black, also. You Neo-Cons scare me with you religous propeganda. I am religous but unlike you folks I don't wear it on my shoulders.
My goodness, Jeff. Don’t you have a grammar checker on your computer?
If it came down to an election where the only two people on the ticket were Romney or the Devil, I think I'd have to just stay home. This man is not to be trusted anymore than his obvious campaign workers posting here in the guise of ordinary citizens! They all sound like TV ads...and indeed, like Romney himself: stale, canned and totally rehaessed and phoney!
Several have posted that "Romney is a Phoney." Such epithets are common when one has no concrete evidence. Romney is as real as can be. I have a cousin who knew him as her lay minister and has nothing but good to say. My Dr. served with him on a mission in France. When you live with someone if cramped quarters for months you get to know them well. This man has nothing but good to say of Romney. I have talked with him personally and with his good friends from Bain and school. He is a man of character and resolve and absolutely brilliant at solving amazingly complex problems (think Olympics, Bain, Staples and imagine Massachusetts with a $3B debt!)
Don't vilify someone you don't even know with words like "phoney." He is honest about any changes of heart he has had. Why do we try to convince others if we don't expect anyone to ever be changed by the evidence. Like you guys who label him phoney--nothing would change your minds because you have decided so it must be so. You are dead wrong about this fine man.
Notably he is NOT on the list of corrupt politicians.
Sifi--now that shows your economic prowess. You are claiming Mitt Romney balanced a budget with a $3B inherited deficit by allowing the enactment of $5M in fees (which are much fairer than taxes becaue the user pays). I wish I could spend $3B and only have to raise $5 M to balance it out.
You need to ge bact to school for remedial math.
Contrast Ads. Although factcheck.org is bias, you should really check them out. They don't really say that Romney's ads are false -- just that his conversion was recent.
I also agree that National Review trumps any other combination of endorsements from all other news outlets. They are undeniably the most prominent conservative magazine in America. And they got that way by being the most thorough, articulate, and well reasoned. Their endorsement of Mitt is very well reasoned. See the issue that comes out tomorrow.
I'm astonished at the dogmatic (and unthinking) defence that Romney is receiving for his half-honest attacks on his opponents (McCain, Huckabee, Guliani).
I like Romney's approach to reducing government, but his half-truth criticisms of his opponents speak to his ability to blur the lines between honest criticism and political lies. Listening to McCain and Huckabee respond make me lean toward McCain or Huckabee and further away from Romney. Huckabee is right on this point-- if he's telling half-truths and distorts the facts now, what will prevent him from doing so as president?
