Huckabee talks tough on immigration in ad

By Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 10, 2007 12:21 PM

A new TV ad from Mike Huckabee appears designed to shore up any slippage among Republicans animated by the issue of illegal immigration.

He has taken some shots from Republican rivals for his support, while governor of Arkansas, of making children of illegal immigrants eligible for merit college scholarships.

Huckabee talks tougher in an immigration plan unveiled on Friday and in the new TV spot, which will air in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.

The ad emphasizes building a fence on the Mexico border. The ad also shows him saying "no" to amnesty and to "sanctuary cities," echoing the hard line taken by Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, and other GOP candidates.

Huckabee, however, once praised the comprehensive reform pushed by President Bush that would have provided a path to citizenship for undocumented workers who met certain requirements. And he has said that racism was behind some of the opposition to the reform package, which was championed by Republican rival John McCain.

  1. Criminals did NOT build America; Citizens and LEGAL immigrants built it. Illegal Aliens and Immigration is NOT the same thing. 80% of the American people want an end to anarchy! This is NOT a Democrat, Republican, Independent issue. It's an American Issue.

Illegal aliens are criminals, those who hire them are criminals and those who aid-and-abet them are criminals.

Illegal aliens in America have NO rights. We are required by law to arrest and prosecute, deport them. (Title 8 U.S. Code) To report illegal aliens call the DHS National Hotline 1 866 DHS 2ICE. (1-866-347-2523)

No, matter your political party affiliation, and setting aside your thoughts on issues. We all need to remember what it is to be an American Citizen. We need to make sure our elected representatives obey their Oath of Office and keep their Oath of Allegiance. See http://tinyurl.com/2znnvl Know whom you are voting for.

  1. This position now, should not surprise anyone. He is like a drunken driver all over the highway with his positions. Social conservatives, are being fed a lot of Smoke and Mirrors, and are flocking to him because he is the rebound guy for voters leaving a dysfunctional marriage to a candidate they never really loved, now that they have been stripped from Giuliani.
Huckabee has serious problems about his probems as Govenor. He May be charming, but he doesn't come across as tough enough to be able to goe toe -to -toe with with present and future brutal despots and terrorist groups.
You may want Huckabee for a boss, but probably not as the cop to come save your hide

Since the other candidates don''t have anything to say on what they can do for America, they take the easy road and resort to taking cheap shots at Mike. Don’t fall into their trap any longer with negative attacks, let''s show the critics and the naysayers that Americans have pride and we are ready to elect an honest, humble, trustworthy man for US President.

  1. LB maybe you should read a book that doesn't come out of the AFrocentric Studies department at Commie U. America didn't creat slavery, but America and the West took legislative and military action to eradicate it at a great loss of life and property and America has spent many billions of dollars in social services-so where is you "slavery built America thesis"? America created the humanism you so self righteously spew, but I doubt you will ever match the activism and purpose of the American abolitionists. Slavery is resurgent today in Africa and parts of the world. Have you done anything to help?
Pompous hypocrite-feel free to leave America if you live here. We need people like you like we need roadkill and bird flue. http://texasranger1848.blogspot.com/
