McCain says he was right on Iraq
John McCain's new TV ad on the Iraq war all but says, "I told you so."
The ad, which will air in New Hampshire, plays up McCain's credentials on defense and foreign policy -- his areas of strength compared to his Republican rivals.
It also highlights his reputation as a maverick, which McCain hopes will appeal to independent voters, who helped him win the primary in 2000 and who he is now aggressively courting.
But the ad also a younger McCain walking with Republican icon Ronald Reagan, because McCain still needs support from the GOP base. A new poll out today shows that McCain has surged to second place in New Hampshire, with 22 percent, but he's still rather far behind front-runner Mitt Romney, who has 34 percent.
The announcer says that despite the naysayers, McCain pushed for more US troops and a new counterinsurgency strategy in Iraq. "Today that strategy is working," the announcer says, an assertion supported by a decrease in US casualties and lower overall violence since the so-called surge put in place by General David Petraeus.
Then McCain says that he didn't go to Washington to win the "Mr. Congeniality" award, but to serve the country.
"One man does what's best for America," the announcer concludes, "not what's easy."

War is peace--ahhh- OK John
Its false progress. Ask John how many Iraqis under age 17 are dead as result of his vote for the false war.
Too bad the GOP sold out the entire country by putting GWB on the 2000 ticket instead of McCain, someone a lot of us Dems might have voted for who would have had the correct strategy to counter terrorism from the get go.
Instead we ended up with a horrific disaster in the ME, and in the process the chances of McCain ever getting elected were totally compromised.
Thanks GOP!
War is peace. False progress.... More stupid holyer art thou lets just all get along comments. Islamist with long reaches hate us. Iraq is in the middle of it all. What do you want to do, talk to them while they line up more pilots?
Good ad, but McCain should have named names instead of "naysayers, i.e. Liberal Media, Harry "The War is Lost" Reid, MoveOn. org. et al.
Good ad, but McCain should have named names instead of just "naysayers", i.e. All Liberal Media, All Liberal Members of Congress (other than Lieberman), Their Fearless Leader Harry "The War is Lost" Reid, MoveOn. org Kooks, et al.
John McCain is the only candidate of either party that is not pandering to the voters. Any man that spent five years in a POW camp has a really good idea of what is right and what is just a bunch of hollow promises. We were robbed of this candidate in 2000 and now is the time to correct that injustice.
John McCain is an enemy of freedom, peace and the American people. He is a compromised shill, a hack in every sense of the word. Only a dark person would claim that the human tragedy in Iraq has been a success.
Nearly all of the candidates foisted upon us are shills -- both sides.
I honestly do not care about future terrorists under the age of 17.
McCain was wrong about the Iraq war and it is probably too early to claim that recent efforts are "working". I still might vote for him though.
Any man who has spent five years in a POW camp should be examined to see if they are still psychologically stable before even being considered for any political role (no less President of the United States). We certainly don't want a war mongering psycopath with a personal vendetta to head up our country. Would you want your kids drafted to the Middle East because McCain will be the candidate who'd get that enacted. War is Peace. What kind of nonsense is that?
He's a good man who will do what he thinks is right based on the information available, not on what the current polling tells him. The one drawback is he is a little loose with his words, and that's gets him into trouble. But the good side of that is you know what you are getting with him.
Based on who's available, I think he might get might vote. McCain as president with a democratic congress might provide the balance we need to keep all of these numb-nuts in check.
Can you imagine the fireworks between McCain and crazy-Nancy? That ought to be entertaining... :-)
John McCain is a patroiat. Anyone paying attention knows this. Is he the best presidential candidate? Maybe, we certainly could do worse. However, the Iraq war is a fact. The only question is will we prevail. Either outcome will effect our country greatly. Win or lose, think about it.
The comments here while off the wall prove in the value of our free society. Freedom, such as this was purchased by the shedding of blood and by those willing to give their lives for this great country. History as proven talk is cheap. There as been no empire in history that has defended itself by negotiating. The desires in the hearts of some off mankind prevent negotiation from succeeding. That leaves the truth; some wars are needed to defend our great country. The time to discuss going to war or the value of war should be done prior to not during. The rules and laws of why we should go should be changed instead of tearing down our great countries reputation because all of us feel bad that war is terrible. Nevertheless terrible is sometimes the price of freedom.
KEATING FIVE
I see a photo op....maybe an aircraft carrier with a banner proclaiming "Mission Accomplished"....
No one is better qualified to inform America about the utter idiocy of the Iraq war than John McCain. This man served America bravely and suffered through the abject misery that war brings. When we, the American people, endorsed the clueless George Bush to run this country, we lost all right to claiming this man. McCain is too good for the Republican Party, which is completely characterized by warmongers, big business harlots, hypocrites and supposedly "compassionate conservatives." The GOP is too stupid and power hungry to recognize a good candidate like McCain when he stands in front of them. Sadly, this nation is still teeming with sheep who will blindly follow the GOP while it runs this country into the ground.
Debated with Ron Paul and insisted the US won the Vietnam War??
And by the way, McCain did not profit one cent from the Keating Five debacle. And this objection, which is trumpeted by the preponderous conservative media outlets and rightwingnuts like Limbaugh, serves to illustrate the paranoia that continues to stab McCain in the back. McCain represents what good conservatives were about when such people actually existed. For modern day conservaties, we get the likes of Thompson, Bush, Libby and Cheney. Each one a bigger Machiavellian meshugana than the one before.
McCain appeals to Americans drowned by war propaganda and fully overtaken by moral rot and decay. He's your guy. He's Kissinger's guy.
John McCain towers above the politcial dwarves we currently have running for president. Imperfect though he may be, he is far bettere suited to commece turning this country away from the bitter partisanship that has marked our recent polictical history. Indirect democracy is a messy way to govern, but the alternatives are decidedly worse. I believe he is the only candidate out there who will speak and govern for the people and not the party. We need a national and international leader, not a follower beholden to special interests and liberal hand-wringers wherever they may be.
McCain-Feingold - the ultimate threat to freedom of speech
John McCain has been through so much in his lifetime. He's cheated the grim reaper on several occasions. It's almost as if he is destined for something great. His tribulations during the Viet Nam imprisonment would have broken many men of lesser fortitude. He's not afraid to take controversial positions. He has shown that he is willing to extend his hand across the political aisle to reach a compromise on important issues. He learns from his mistakes. He's not perfect, but he's trustworthy. Unquestionably, he loves his country and will do all in his power to protect it. He'll be a strong candidate that the American people can evaluate versus the Democrat nominee. Should be a hell of a horse race !
