Mothers, daughters and candy canes in NH

Posted by Marcella Bombardieri, political reporter December 22, 2007 06:45 PM

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Hillary Clinton spent much of her two-day trip to New Hampshire reaching out to women. In the process, a few men may have felt shut out in the cold.

Clinton, accompanied by her daughter Chelsea and mother, Dorothy Rodham, held two events today dubbed “Mothers and Daughters Making history.” Invited guests were primarily undecided women, and both sessions were held in unusually small venues for fewer than 70 people – designed to feel intimate.

That meant turning people away – especially men. At 9 a.m. in Manchester, there was a crush of women of all ages, and a sprinkling of middle aged men, trying to push their way into the YWCA.

A young woman from the campaign staff, who appeared overwhelmed by the crowd, shouted out, “If you have a mother or a daughter with you, you are a lot more likely to get in!”

This reporter was too busy trying to weave through the crowd to talk to any of the disappointed men. But she eventually spotted a few who somehow slipped. Clinton even took a question on the economy from one of them.

Later, the Rodham-Clinton family dropped in on the River House Café, a diner in quaint Milford. Rodham mostly hung back with the campaign staff as Hillary and Chelsea made the rounds, the latter cutely asking young children if they planned to vote for her mom.

Then, one woman chatted her up about her grandmother.

“She’s 88. Isn’t it amazing?” Chelsea responded. “I know! I know! She’s rock star.”

A few minutes later, the candidate held a mini press conference. Before she took questions, she held up a mug of candy canes out and declared she would “sweeten up the press.” She then offered the candy to each reporter, one by one.

  1. Is Marcella a student reporter for a college or high school publication? Her writing and perspectives and observations are very "youthful"....

  1. Her alleged "coverage" of Hillary's campaign has been so blatantly biased in favor of Hillary ( including several puff pieces which ran on page 1) that both she and her Globe editors should be embarrassed.

  1. The first woman president should be a person that all women ( and men) can be proud of. She must be honest and sincere, full of wisdom and integrity. In this rather amateurish article, written by someone who is in awe of Clinton, there is no mention of any of the above qualities. That is because 'that woman' does not possess those qualities. The reporter here needs , perhaps, a bit more experience?

  1. Bring back the professional journalists. Her coverage of Hillary reads like an internship project. I wonder how often Hillary has provided that extra bit of access because of this free marketing campain. Shame on the reporter and more shame on the editors and newspaper for allowing this to continue.

  1. My patient andf family asked me to take them to Milford NH to meet with Hillary Rodham Clinton on saturday, they wanted to ask her a question about health care for severly disabled people living at home. Hillary was not only nice enough to answer the question she offered to help, she had a lengthy conversion with the family. My patients husband was in tears listing to this very powerful women say that she would help him. He and his family has never voted but before the wife (my patient) got sick she was reading Hillary's book, she has a lot of respect for Mrs. Clinton and she wants to support her in her quest for Presidenancy. They have since decided they are going to the city hall of Manchester Nh and they are going to register to vote for the primary's on Jan 8, 2008.
Not because she said she would help but because she listen and she has a heart.
she has genuine care for the American people and she has leadership we believe can acrry her to the White House.
this women has been in the White house for 8 years already yes, as a first women but she has experience and knowledge of what goes on there. she also is a very powerful person that leaders from other country's respect. If other country's can respect her why can't we.
Good Luck Mrs. Clinton and please have a safe and Happy Holidays
