Obama launches new ads in Iowa

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 28, 2007 09:30 PM

Democrat Barack Obama unveiled two new TV ads in Iowa tonight, one defending his healthcare plan and the other pledging to end the days of corporate lobbyists setting the agenda in Washington.

The first ad says his plan to make health insurance affordable is better than his rivals and is being unfairly maligned by unions allied with Hillary Clinton and John Edwards. Clinton's campaign immediately challenged the ad as misleading. Clinton, because she, like Edwards, proposes to require individuals to obtain coverage and Obama doesn't, says that Obama's plan would leave out 15 million of the estimated 47 million Americans without insurance.

The second ad uses extended excerpts of his well-received speech to Iowa Democrats last month in which he promised to take on the lobbyists, take away tax breaks from companies moving jobs abroad, and put that money in the pockets of hard-working families.

  1. Top 10 Contradictions in Obama

    1. [Obama on Not just change political party but change the game and players in Washington] Then why play the same game at all with the same players whose support he now seeks? Does he realize that while his rhetoric may be ideal, it's not the pragmatic necessary and urgent issue/call for America at this time?
    2. [Obama on the right kind and wrong kind of experience] Obama does not realize that what he has is the POTENTIAL to have the right kind of experience. Unfortunately, now is not the time and the Oval Office is not the place to be earning and learning that experience. No president can be perfect but America cannot go from one extreme (GWBush) to another extreme (BHObama). The experienced person can fail and there is greater probability that an Inexperienced person would fail.
    3. [Obama on judgment] One judgment call on the Iraq issue does NOT mean Obama would have good judgments on a gamut of complex issues. From what's been reported he has avoided making a vote on crucial issues. And he only has very limited experience to showcase an array of judgment calls, which did not even do that except showcase tasks that he did just as he ought to. It's not a fair claim by Obama.
    4. [Obama on the Iraq issue] America does not live by "Iraq" alone. It is not even a simple right or wrong issue. Lucky Obama - the present sentiment is just rendering him to seem right. If he has no concrete and significant experience in the world stage and security matters, it would indeed be a gamble to have him as president.
    5. [Obama on the establishment] How can Obama posture to bring a new face and a new way in the establishment when he brings with him a circle of close advisers and staff from the Clinton administration? Employing “Clinton minds” around him means he embraces the Clinton policies.
    6. [Obama on his policies] His policies are hybrids from policies that have been strongly initiated by and identified with his rivals. He talks of what’s wrong with past policies and other candidates’ policies but does not have an original policy of his own. He wants people to look only to the future because he has INsufficient past to substantiate the rhetoric he gives in the present.
    7. [Obama on hope] It will be unfair to speak of hope that does NOT rest on substance and can NOT stand on a concrete relevant experience to make it happen. That would be tantamount to a manipulation of a people's desperation.
    8. [Obama on triangulation] He is equally guilty of triangulating. Most of the time he draws the first snipe and criticism. Then he complains of negativity when his rivals counter his (and his campaign’s) attacks. And at worst, he speaks in abstracts and generalities which give him room to parse. But his motives remain equally questionable.
    9. [Obama on character] Other candidates have been in public eye longer than he has. Naturally there is more to be played up about their faults and failings. But it does not mean Obama has a better character than the rest. He simply is an unknown character. Perhaps his eagerness to be elected now has much to do with that - for time might soon catch up with his closet and be found more lacking in character. If that happens, the presidency would be more difficult for him to win.
    10. [Obama on family values] It is good that he has not yet gone through serious marital and family problems. It’s expected given that he’s young and his marriage is new. But there is much more that can be said about family values with Hillary – forgiving an unfaithful husband that mirrors her capacity to heal a nation’s wounds – raising a decent daughter that mirrors her capacity to restore respectability to America – showing personal strength and discipline that mirrors her capacity to be commander-in-chief – keeping generational bonds in the family that mirrors her capacity to inspire bipartisanship.

Obama may be good and experienced enough for Illinois but not yet for America.

  1. I liked Bill Clinton. Hillary, my dear, You are no Bill Clinton. Every election cycle the electorate gets caught up in overanalzying nonsense. I am from Illinois, and I like Barack Obama. He is a breath of fresh air who does not have to read a poll before he answers a question.

And MG, if you have to be that long winded in attacking a candidate, it tells me you really don't have much substance to talk about.

Hillary is pro war, pro big busiess, and feeds at the hog trough of the rich and priviledged. Wake up America! Iowa, this resident of Illinois needs you to caucus for Obama next week! You can send America a strong message with your vote

  1. I suggest you go to either candidate's website and look for substance.

The Google search "Obama" takes me here: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/semr?source=SEM-register-google-obama-search-national
But I'm not interested in signing up for e-mail notifications. I enter bogus information and am presented a page where I can donate - but I'm looking for substance (can't see a link for that).
So I type in www.barackobama.com. Hmm - the site has a maintenance message "... see you in a few hours". The rest is hype and hoopla. It'll take much more than that to run this country, get the wagon out of the ditch "W" and cronies drove us into.

Hillary, in contrast, www.hillaryclinton.com, has very detailed ideas. She must have spent substantial time and energy planning her presidency. Some very well thought-out ideas worth considering.

So which is it - hype and hoopla or competence and planning? Your choice.

  1. The challenges a State Senator faces in his own state is less that he/she has to contend with in the US Senate. Barack has the nerve to talk about Clinton's judgment. When he first arrived at the US Senate, he sought advice from Senator Clinton. He also said during the Campaign that he would do so when he is president. If has such good judgment why would he seek advice from Hillary who he says does not have any foreign policy experience other than sipping tea with those leaders she visited? The AUDACITY OF BARACK!
Barack has also shown that he didn't have good judgment when as a teenager he chose to defile his body with narcotics. Barack acts like Mr. Righteous, and people are distracted by emotions, but BARACK WILL NOT WIN!

  1. Response to #5 DG---

The Obama website is an outstanding source of detailed information!
You happened to log on when the site was down for a few hours for maintenance and the installation of new graphics.
I've been visiting the site daily since April and this is the first time that the maintenance message has ever been up.

So...check it out now! There's substance galore!

And I'd like to point out that the community blog thread on the Obama site does not censor anti-Obama comments . My understanding is that the Clinton website does not have the same free speech policy!

  1. Obama, you have not talked about social security which is top prority for senior who are now drawing social security and still need to work beacause one cannot live out of the capped amout $13,000,work is necessary, therefore the allowed about should be increase to $20,000.This amount will allow senior to work without been penalize for making to much money and their check taken away for two or three months to paid the money back because they earned over the cap-ped amount.I think if you include changing the capped amount one can earn before he is 70 years old, will attract the uneducate or the least educated, vetoers, who depends on the social security check.seniors who has worked hard all their life and paid into social should be given a break in their twlight years.
