Patrick to stump for Obama in early states

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 26, 2007 10:55 AM

Governor Deval Patrick, who boosted Barack Obama's presidential bid with an endorsement and a series of testimonials during TV interviews, plans to make his pitch directly to voters in three key early voting states.

The Massachusetts governor plans to stump for Obama in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina in the final days before each contest, his political committee confirmed this morning.

Patrick is tentatively scheduled to be Saturday and Sunday in Iowa, where Democrats caucus on Jan. 3; on Jan. 5 and 6 in New Hampshire, where the primary is Jan. 8; and some time during the third week in January in South Carolina, where Democrats vote Jan. 26.

While Patrick served as an assistant attorney general in the administration of President Clinton, spouse of Hillary Clinton, Obama's main rival, Patrick and Obama share much in common. About 10,000 people attended a rally on the Boston Common in October when Patrick made his endorsement official.

  1. They sure do have much in common- David Axelrod the political operative who made both men "authentic." Same words, same "hope" same "outsider" image-same lack of experience and I imagine Obama would make the same rookie mistakes Patrick has made-only as President those mistakes would be grave and dangerous.

  1. Glad to see we now have a governor who has a positive outlook and is not out to bash everyone and everything. What a change from our former governor. I hope he will not be tempted to go to Washington if Obama does get elected.

  1. If Obama wins and offers Patrick the AG job, he will take it. I think the state would be better with low profile Tim Murray running the show anyway.

  1. I disagree with the Gov. on nearly everything, and truth be told, wish he was not elected. I am happy to see that he has apparently learned from his early blunders (drapes, cadillacs, 70K assistants) and scheduled these events on weekends. I agree with BB60- Obama is not experienced enough to lead this country at this time.

  1. This is another one of Deval's hope-mongering, ideological, non-detailed, no answers speeches. It's a good thing Deval wants a campaign that's "not about a resume but about character." because Obama has no resume or experience managing anything - a state legislator in Illinois, and a half-term US Senator. He wants to be the leader of the largest enterprise on the planet?

Just more, "Together We Can" from Deval. Except this speech it's about Barack "Lifting us all up." Anyone figure out what that means yet? More warm and fuzzies. I don't get how people fall for this crap. Still waiting on that property tax relief you were promised during Deval's campaign? The only thing you're really waiting for is Deval's re-election excuses about why he couldn't get it done with a legislature that's over 85% controlled by his own party!

  1. It is reprehensible that our newly elected Governor, still in his first year of snafus, cadillac, wife's 75,000 dollar secretary, drapes, salary increases for his aides, cabinet posts for his legislative and political supporters, now wants to travel all over the country on our taxes? With state police, employed by the state, at his side? Will they do a Giuliani thing and protect his whole family should they travel with him? Think about it. No one has been in the corner office for over twenty years? Dukakis ran for President for over two years out of his salaried Massachusetts job; Weld campaigned for Ambassador to Mexico, Kerry, while our Senator, campaigned for the Presidency, Romney campaigned for Bush and other republicans laying the groundwork for his national run, Cellucci campaigned for
Bush hoping to become his V-Pres. and settled for the Canadian Ambassadorship where his claim to fame was to host his daughter's wedding at
the mansion (at our expense?) And they had the gall to criticize Jane Swift for
using the state helicopter to go home to the Western part of our state? If Deval has
smartened up, he will stay home. The six figured Big Dig settlement is only the
beginning. There will be more. You see, the front office is always empty and when
Deval is there, the long line of applicants with resumes in hand, block the
entrance for legitimately interested persons. Deval needs to explain to the voters
and taxpayers. who pay his salary, why it is necessary for Massachusetts to
support his efforts to elect his personal choice for President? In order to keep all
of this on a politcally correct plane, all state employees should be able to do the
same, choose a candidate, and then in the accompaniment of state troopers
schedule events at which their presidential canidate needs their help. Fair is Fair.

  1. Deval lacked the proper experience to run a state. The sad part is that no one in the MA. media had the guts to actually question him about his catch phrases and ask him for details.

No surprise that he is backing a candidate, who much like himself ,would rather put forth campaign slogans rather than tangible evidence of how he would govern. Think Obama will open casinos in every state to help off set any budget issues?

  1. One rarely sees such an ungrateful fellow as Deval Patrick. This man owes his career to Mr. Clinton and even his governorship to Mr. Clinton. In the dark days of his gubernatorial compaign, Mr. Clinton came to Boston to shell up his support. Now he is working hard to undermine Mr. Clinton's wife just because the other guy is a fellow black?

I'm not saying he must support Mrs. Clinton but the way he is doing it, it is all wrong. He can stay out of the primary. The man must be getting tired of being a governor already and is looking at DC. What a jacka$$ with no gratitude.

  1. Gov. Patrick does not owe his governorship to Mr. Clinton. He was way ahead in the polls before Clinton was campaigning for him. Senator Obama also campaigned for him several times. He probably owes it just as much to Senator Obama.

  1. What's funny is most of the comments made are probably democrats. At a time when our "first black president" sees his wife slipping in the polls and does what about every racist in the country does. Call us drug dealers and act like they're scared of us. Rather it be black coaches in pro sports, or in a senior position in the work place. If I recall it was Obama traveling the country in 04, and 06 campaigning nonstop for your newly elected do nothing, no heart having democratic congress. You want loyalty from Patrick, and judgement from Bush. Loyalty is why almost the entire Bush administration can't finish with their boss and pray the do nothing congress continues to do just that. Loyalty got us in Iraq. Which is why Obama will win. WE NEED CHANGE NOW. Obama '08!

  1. Since Mr. Patrick was so close to both the Clintons and Obama, he should have chosen to remain neutral, until the candidate for the Democratic Party was chosen from the primaries. If President Clinton did not give him a job in his cabinet, no way would he have won the Mass governorship with no political experience. He was able to add that to his resume to gain employment in various Big Corporations like Coca Cola. In response to #11, why do we always use the race card? Isn't it Obama who revealed that he did drugs? It's called bad decision, bad judgment. He gives smooth speeches, and soundbites, but when he is in a forum or debate he just rambles on without really answering the questions meaningfully. Obama may seem to be rising in the polls, but we'll have to wait and see if all the people who say they'll vote for him in the polls will do so in the voting booth. Deval won in Massachusetts, but will Obama win in the other 49 states?

  1. Barack Obama was born at a time when most Black Americans were
still denied their Constitutional right to vote. Is it a tribute to America
that millions Americans of all backgrounds are supporting his candidacy.
The former Constitutional law professor, and state senator is a man of substance, experience, wisdom, sound judgment, and
    forsight.

What's lacking in substance is the media's reporting of Obama,
    which often includes misreporting.

Video of Obama re: Pakistan and terrorism.

    Obama was right about Pakistan.
