Rivals hit Romney on illegal workers

Mitt Romney's Republican rivals wasted little time tonight ridiculing him for his second go-round with illegal immigrants working at his home.

Campaigning in Bedford, N.H., Senator John McCain's first response to reporters asking about the issue was a child-like giggle and what can best be described as an interpretive dance based on the motion of lawnmowers and hedge-clippers.

"I'm more than pleased with the fact that I live in a condominium," McCain said, before restraining his laughter. "Obviously, it's amazing, but he may have a perfectly good explanation."

Romney announced this evening through his campaign that he had fired the company employing the illegal immigrants, after learning of them from the Globe.

The campaign of Rudy Giuliani, who at the GOP debate last week accused Romney of having a "sanctuary mansion" because of the illegal immigrants working on his lawn last year, issued a statement: "I think it speaks for itself."

Fred Thompson's campaign also seized on the issue.

"First Mitt Romney was FOR illegal immigrants working on his lawn, and then he was against it, then for it, and now I guess he's against it again," spokesman Todd Harris said in a statement. "Sounds like his position on amnesty."

  1. I was offended by Romney's use of the term 'funny accents' during the CNN debate. It tells a lot about his thinking.

  1. This type of argument makes me sick. Why using imigrants trying to make their lifes honestly, looking for a better life which is impossible in their country many times due to American exploration and with so many important things happenning in the USA, they decide to penalize those poor people, I think Republicans should have some more important issues to talk about.

  1. That sounds so..."BUSH".....I can't believe anyone would run for office and think the public is still nieve enough to elect someone who solves all problems after the fact again!

    Are we that stupid?

  1. This is ridiculous. Get me a list of all the places any single person in America has patronized in the past year and I can guarantee that there was an illegal that helped provide them with some service or a product.

What next - Rudy's squad will attack MItt for going 5 mph over the speed limit.

I realize Mitt has "asked" for banter - but this is getting petty. Is anybody else throwing up?

  1. What's ridiculous is that someone would actually believe that illegal immigrants are everywhere. I employee fifty people, all born the the U.S. The argument that illegals are needed to do the work of Americans is ludicrous. Americans are lazy and feel entitled to any and everything...

  1. Didn't anybody tell Mitt Romney that running for president changes your house into glass?
What a hypocrite - privately giving the employer a second chance while pubilicly intolerant on a realistic immigration policy. Didn't he ever hear about Nannygate?
Quit now, Mitt, it's all over for you.

  1. American skilled laborers are being financially destroyed by the companies that employ illegal immigrants. They are making a huge profit on the backs of their undocumented workers, as well as being able to outbid legitimate businesses due to their cheating the system. Of course they can come in at a lower price quote when they are paying their workers minimally, not paying into social security and medicare, and aren't contributing to worker's compensation and liability insurance based on actual wages. These employers should be penalized big time as far as I'm concerned. As a public servent and candidate for PRESIDENT, Mitt Romney was negligent when he didn't investigate the the legal status of the individuals who were working at his home, especially in light of their "funny accents". (is he looking to outshine Bush with his Romneyisms"?

  1. JM, just about anyone else would get a pass, but Romney deserves every bit of this. He could have kept his mouth shut, or he could have proposed something of substance, but instead he talks about funny accents and foreigners and illegal aliens. If he were a man of substance, he would have personally checked the immigration status of every person who works on his property. But no, he let it slide, just like he let stuff slide while he was governor. What else would you expect from him?

  1. He has $200 million and he's still too cheap to hire Americans - you can't really blame him. He thinks he's better than all of us so he doesn't need to spend his precious money. He never thought for a minute we'd find out, or that we'd care. He doesn't really have any thoughts or platform of his own - he's just a sock puppet who floats any way the wind blows. Don't get me wrong - he LOOKS fabulous! Really beautiful guy, got a great smile - and tall as all get out. My candidate just kinda looks like an old bantam rooster - that's funny 'cause it's so true. Dr. Ron Paul has been fighting the good fight for 20 years now in Congress. You all hear about him as Dr. No, but do you know he authors at least 10 pieces of legislation a year to REDUCE the federal government's power to those enumerated in the Constitution? Sometimes bills, but sometimes Constitutional Amendments too. He believes that if we need to do something that's not in the Constitution we should amend it to allow us to do so LEGALLY. You'll note this post WON'T be followed by one showing all his flip-flops... because there aren't any. I KNOW you've seen us all posting about him - why not take half an hour and see what the buzz is about at www.RonPaul2008.com? Or just look in the Federal Register?

  1. It's the responsibility of the lawn company to verify employees are legal. I don't go out to dinner, go to the back and ask for any one to prove to me that they are working legally. I do expect the establishment who personally hired them to do so. As if Romney has time to ask for documentation from his lawn guys. I wouln't ask the manager of the restaurant.

  1. JM, you are right to a certain extent. But what is happening here is that this illegal immigration snafu fits into what is becoming the Mitt Romney narrative, which is something is okay until it isn't, politics wise.

  1. I suppose it really doesn’t matter that Mitt the Mormon hired illegal immigrants. What really maters will he be able to talk them into attacking the wagon train as it goes through Mountain Meadows? Most important of all can he get them to wear Mormon Magic underwear? And will they be judged good enough to become gods and rule their own world?

  1. For the average person, it may be a bit of hassle to actually verify that the the company you hire makes the effort to not hire illegal immigrants. Willard Mitt Romney is not the average person.

Further, being that illegal immigration is apparently one of the corner-stones of his campaign, you'd figure he'd at least try.

  1. How silly can this get. Romney really can't win here. Imagine if Romney had done otherwise and asked the landscapers whether they were illegal. Does anyone doubt the fact that the Globe, upon learning of this fact, would have cast this as a bad thing? Come on. Let's really think about this. Next time your at Shaws, ask the kid bagging whether he is an illegal alien. Now imagine how the people in line behind you would react.
