Romney ad says he's not politically correct

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 7, 2007 12:32 PM

Fresh off his nationally televised speech on faith in American politics, Mitt Romney today launched a new TV ad in Iowa in which he brags about actions as Massachusetts governor that were not "politically correct."

In the ad, the announcer cites his opposition to abortion, his support of English in the classroom, and his effort to ban gay marriage. Romney is shown speaking against same-sex marriage and about encouraging people to marry before having children.

"You strengthen the American people by strengthening the American family," he says.

The ad seems squarely aimed at the same social conservatives in Iowa whom he tried to reassure about his Mormon faith in his closely-watched Thursday speech.

  1. Romney supported Gay marriage in the beginning. He did nothing for the great Commonealth of Massachusetts. I think people voted for him because he was willing to work for nothing. BUt you get what you pay for. I would have paid big bucks to take my vote back....

  1. I am from the Great COmmonwealth of Massachusetts. Mitt Romney did very little as governer and I cannot believe that the great former Governer William Weld is backing him.

Mitt worked for nothing and the people of Massachusetts got nothing in return. He did flip flops and cowered to public opinion. A leader does not back down but admits a mistake.

  1. I was a MA resident when Romney was Governor. I would NEVER vote for him as President. I do not feel that he shows long term commitment, nor is his is word to be trusted.
However, I listened to this video and the quote you attribute to him is not quite correct. It should read, "You strengthen the American people by strengthening the American FAMILY."

  1. I am very impressed with Romney's speech. Everyone I have spoken to who heard it thought the speech was brilliant, and not just political. Romney is sincere and has again shown the insight that will be a major asset to the American people should he outpace Giuliani to become President of the United States.

  1. That ad is gross. Contrast that with the ads and speeches he ran when he was running for governor of Massachusetts and you'd see a different candidate.

  1. Mitt Romney did say what he had to say to get elected in the People's Republic of Massachusets. No doubt he has changed his views. But the guy did good things for Massachusetts to the extent that the ultra-liberal Mass. Legislature would let him. He is not ultra-conservative but he is conservative, pro-business, anti welfare dependency, and he wants to strengthen America. He does have a strong family background. I like for him. I would vote for him again.

  1. I live in Massachusetts now and have lived here through the past four Governors. I'm progressive in my politics and usually vote Democrat -- sometimes Independent when Democrats present nothing new or intriguing.
I watched with incredible dismay when I witnessed Mitt Romney convince a huge number of progressive-thinking Massachuseets citizens to vote for him as Governor. Romney's personal and political ambitions are almost unparalleled. He came to Massachusetts to run for Governor simply because he knew he had a chance to win, and could set the stage for a run in national politics.
As a previous commentary says, Romney will say ANYTHING to get elected. Then, he will pretty much do nothing that is "politically incorrect", as his TV advertisement says he will.
Mitt Romney, nice guy, good-looking guy, is the worst kind of politician. I'd say even worse than Bush. Not only is he unstudied in history and the cause and effect of public policy (like Bush), but he is the furthest from a values-driven individual you can find in politics today. With Bush, at least you know where he stands.

  1. Pleeeease! This paper hammers Romney day after day to advance it's liberal agenda. What the heck has Cadillac Deval done for us? Casinos? Gimmie a break. And you know, the previous 2 GOP Governers (Swift and Celluci) were nothing to write home about either.

Given the choice between Romney and the other lamo presidential candidates, I'll take Romney..

  1. Mitt clearly changes his views to what the crowd wants to hear. I want a President who sticks to his or her morals. A president who does that has morals, character, and a sense of integrity.

  1. i am a resident of the embarrasing commonwealth of massachusetts, and the man did a wonderful, albeit not perfect, job...just to show there is no consensus but rather a bounty of opinions on the man.

  1. In government we need common people who truly represent the majority. Willard Mitt Romney is, with gardeners, groundskeepers, painters, hundreds of millions in assets and a retinue of staff, NOT common.

In government we need people who are motivated by the common good, not their future ambition for power and more cash. Prior to his run for Governor he was "just looking for a race to enter". Massachusetts voters should have taken note of this and rejected him. A sincere candidate runs for office because they are motivated by the opportunity to do good at large.

    Romney is a fraud.

  1. Susan, you are correct when you stated that Mitt changed many of his positions based on public opinion. Isn't that what our representatives are supposed to do? The Mass. delegation in Washington, including Kerry and Kennedy, don't care what their constituents want. They have forgotten who they work for. Politicians are there to represent us , not them. So thumbs up for Mitt.

  1. Susan is right, Mitt does change his position based on public opinion. But, isn't that what a true political representative is supposed to do. When a candidate is elected he or she is put in office to represent their constituency. The Mass delegation, including Kerry and Kennedy, have forgotten this basic principle. Thumbs up for Mitt. Thanks for listening to the American people.
