Romney and Huckabee hit each other
Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney might have shaken hands after Wednesday's debate and made up over a Huckabee quote in an upcoming magazine article that seemed to disparage Romney's Mormon faith.
But that doesn't mean they're completely playing nice -- not when they're wrestling for the all-important first Republican nomination victory in the Iowa caucuses.
On Fox News Network this morning, Romney said that Huckabee "opened the door" to questions about his life as a Baptist preacher before he went into elected office by running TV ads in Iowa calling himself a Christian leader.
On MSNBC, Huckabee took a swipe at Romney, noting that he is airing the first contrast TV ad in Iowa, hitting Huckabee on illegal immigration, and has sent out critical direct mail as well.
Huckabee said that, in contrast, he's running a positive campaign.
"I think that's why we're doing so well," he said. "People appreciate that I'm talking about what America needs to do to get ahead, not how I can take a ball-peen hammer and knock somebody in the kneecaps."

What Romney did was completely different from what Huckabee did. Romney presented his own views and Huckabee's views on immigration in a clean and professional manner. Some Huckabee supporters may think it was an "attack add" but that's only because it was true.
However what Huckabee did was completely wrong. Not only did he take a cheap shot at Romney but he took a cheap shot at a whole faith. It was wrong and he should be required to apologize to the mormon faith for his slanderous remark. Mormons do not believe such things and to say so is a insult to them. Huckabee has shown his true colors by this comment and left many to wonder if he is truly a religous biggot in disguise.
This is an excellent article on http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2007/11/13/huckabee/index1.html
Romeny Got what he deserved!!!!
The whole truth nobody will know
Does Huckabee really have any respect for the Constitutional freedom of religion, and the separation of church and state? My ancestors gave up everything they had to come to this country on the Mayflower and escape religious persecution. Then later, they walked across the great plains of this country, once again giving up property, livelyhood and their own lives for freedom of religion. I would never betray my heritage and vote for a President who does not have respect for the way others worship.
As Tina said, "What's religion, gotta' do, gotta' do with it?"
I want someone who will create growth in our economy, lower taxes, defend our liberty, and so on. Romney has the best record on SOLVING problems. I don't care if the man is from Mars, he's clearly got a tremendous amount of insight in how to grow our economy and find solutions to our nation's problems.

This comment is really being taken too far. If you have watched any of Huckabee's interviews, you would know that it is absolutely not his character to slam another person's religion. In fact when questioned he said he really didn't know enough about the Mormon faith to comment on it. That's when he asked the honest innocent question. It's a rumor about the Mormon faith that I have heard on many occasions. I don't see what's so wrong about asking an honest question. In fact because of this question we are all a little more educated about the LDS. Are we not? Thank you Mike. That clears that up.
I doubt Huckabee's question was completely innocent. It was a passive aggressive way to get his point across. In the south we refer to it as a "Southern Slam."
Why isn't anyone talking about the defense deal Romney cut with the chinese? Isn't that a bit problematic after hearing so much about his concern and willingness to put our nations security first? What a crock! I think he's a used car salesman!!

Wow! That article is absolutely disgusting and unbiblical!! That is horrible!! This is not a president I want and I'm not "negro"
Disgraceful!

Huckabee would not intentionally slam Romney. Romney has shown that he will say whatever the people in front of him want to hear in order to get their vote. He will disappoint those who vote for him!
He attacks Guiliani and Huckabee on issues he actually doesn't fare to well on (immigration), and then thinks that he can just tell us he is strong on immigration and that most of us won't bother to go compare the records of all three.
At another time when Huckabee was asked about Romney's religion and whether his religion was valid, Huckabee said that its not his job to judge another person's religion. He has class and doesn't run smear campaigns. The same cannot be said about Romney or Guliani.
I would take an honest Mormon over a corrupt Baptist any day of the weak. Anyone who uses their religion in a political fashion like Huckabee does is truly profane. The blasphemy practiced by so called Christian leaders (think Bush for one) is truly damaging to the reputation of Christianity. I do not agree with Romney on many issues but at least he seems to have a good heart. Huckabee would practice evil with hypocricy in his eyes. Of course Ron Paul is the only candidate who follows the law of the New Testament so I support him. Peace
While Huckabee did not mean to attack Romney or Mormonism, the fact is that the media is lying to people if they say that Mormons do not believe them to be brothers.
From the official LDS website.
“Jesus Christ and Lucifer are… spirit brothers.”
And
“Jesus was Lucifer’s older brother.”
http://lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sourceId=4a10ef960417b010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____&hideNav=1
Even if a religion believes a certain way, what does it matter anyhow? So what if the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believes that Jesus and Lucifer are brothers, what matters is the fact that we have to choose, and choose well, who will lead this country. A man's religion should not change how people should view him, it should be what is in his heart and what is in his head, not what is in the bible that he reads. God bless America.

I'll be honest, I have not read much about Huckabee's record in Arkansas, and I do not doubt that he had good approval ratings. He portrays to live by the bible, and says he's the only one with a theologian degree. But one of the alarming issues that I have with him, is that he says he doesn't know much about the lds(mormons), even with his theologian degree, and then slips in a derogatory question about the LDS faith. I for one would like to know whether Huckabee knew the answer to his own question before he asked it. This will tell a lot about his integrity as a Christian. And if he really didn't know the answer (even though southern baptist preach this in there sermons), then maybe he should explain reasoning for asking. Huckabee's whole strategy seems to be building on the uncertainty of Romney's religion. If you want to know more about Romney's religion maybe you should talk to his church.

Truth is the absolute defense against slander. Mormons do belive that Satan and Jesus were spirit brothers, because they believe Jesus was created as Satan was.
"We believe that God begat or created the spirits of Jesus, Lucifer, and all of the human family as his children"
"and On first hearing, the doctrine that Lucifer and our Lord, Jesus Christ, are brothers may seem surprising to some—especially to those unacquainted with latter-day revelations" LDS.org
Indeed, it is surprising because it is not true. And it is a latter-day doctrine, but not a Biblical one.
Jesus was not created, he is the Eternal Son of God.
So Romney opened this door when he tried to claim to be a Christian in his faith speech. Mormonism was started by someone who specificaly rejected Christianity as truth and rejected all of its Orthodoxy.

It is funny how the more Huckabee and his supporters talk the more they come off as the ones who are not Christian. Mike Huckabee the Baptist preacher "Christian Leader" has been caught again in another flat out lie. He has lied about the DuMond rape case and now about not knowing much about the Mormon religion. He thought he knew enough to address the Southern Baptist Convention in 1998 in Salt Lake City about the evils of Mormonism. At that conference they tried to do missionary work to convert Utah Mormons to Christianity with literature filled with half truths and slander towards Mormons. Oh, just like Arkansas Governor Clinton smoked pot but did not inhale, Arkansas Governor Huckabee passed out Anti-Mormon literature that he did not read! Right!
We should be grateful to Mike Huckabee for bringing to the attention of the American people , Mitt Romney's real views concerning the Lord Jesus namely that he is the Devil's brother . A view that Christians find deeply offensive .
Another question for Mitt Romney - how is it that he has been seeking the support of Christian Pastors when he was involved in secret Mormon Temple rituals which depicted Christian Pastors as being in the hire and pay of Satan ? This is incredible hypocrisy .
This is information I have learned in my life time from the Bible.
This is for information only, and not meant as controversial.
In relation to the word ETERNAL:
It is of two parts.
Volume-forever.
Quality-Godlike.
Satan or Lucifer as he is referred to at times.
Isaiah 14:12-17 Lucifer fallen from Heaven
Luke 10:18 Christ states he saw Satan fallen from Heaven
Jude 6 Lists Satan and his Angels
Acts 12:26 States we all come to earth at our appointed time and boundary
Ecclesiastes 1:11 We cannot remember things before
Ecclesiastes 12:16 Our Spirit will return to God after our sojourn on earth
Deuteronomy 30:15, 19 Our time and purpose on earth is to see who we will chose to follow. Life and good or Christ::: Death or evil or Satan
Huckster's surge comes at the expense of my constitutional rights. His entire campaign is about his religion. On everything else he basically sucks, except perhaps abortion.
Our founding fathers put very few civil rights into the Constitution itself, they added most as the Bill of Rights, an amendment. The right to run for political office without a religious test was written into the original constitution.
Huckster is running as a "Christian Leader". He goes to Salt Lake City to preach that we need to "reclaim America for Christ!". He claims God is making his poll numbers rise. He tells Romney he needs to explain whether Mormonism is a cult. He starts spewing anti-mormon talking points in high-profile interviews. Then while "apologizing", he claims to know nothing about Mormons...AND BOY DO THE EVANGELICALS COME RUNNING!!!!
All you evangelical Huckabee supporters, keeping drinking the cool-aid, Jesus Juice or whatever that keeps you blindly following your leaders when they say, Vote for Huckabee or say send us your money. By the way, If God created all things then didn't he create Satan too? How do you explain that?
It amazes me that intellegent people will actually pick out beliefs of Mitt Romney and conclude that anyone who belives it is not fit to lead America. Any one who claims to be a christian or jew or muslim or whatever believes in miraculous events that they hold sacred. Can you imagine the uproar if Mohammad and his revelations were attacked and ridiculed openly like some of Romney's beliefs have been? A teacher recently went to jail over naming her Teddy Bear Mohammad. What if Hillary, Rudy, or Huckabee, or any other candidate were asked if they believe in imaculate conception, or the parting of the Red Sea, or Christ walking on water, or Noah gathering 2 over every animal species? If judgements are made about Romney's judgement based on religious beliefs, then lets ask every candidate put forth and defend their religious beliefs.

Concerning Mr Elbeau's comment on Mike Huckabee and abortion - one of the many reasons why the Republican base is increasingly turning to Mike Huckabee and away from Mitt Romney is the correct perception that Romney is an unprincipled opportunist on pro life issues . He cannot be trusted .
A question for Romney - are your views the same as the Mormon organisation which allows for abortion for rape , incest and the mothers life in danger . I have a Mormon friend who resigned his membership from the Mormon organisation out of disgust at their ambiguities .
Mike Huckabee has been a consistent champion for pro life issues
Is Huckabee’s “Are Jesus and the Devil brothers” Question just code for “The Mormon Faith is a Cult”?
Earlier this month (December) in Iowa, Huckabee wouldn't say whether he thought Romney's religion (Mormonism) is a cult.
Huckabee affirmed: "I'm just not going to go off into evaluating other people's doctrines and faiths. I think that is absolutely not a role for a president," the former Arkansas governor said.
In an upcoming article in the New York Times magazine, Huckabee was quoted as saying that he believes Mormonism is a religion but that he doesn’t know much about it.
Or does he?
Huckabee has remarked that he is the only Republican candidate with a theology degree. As a part of the training for that degree, Christian theologians are trained to identify “cult religions”. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon faith) is listed as a “cult” in their training materials.
After saying that he didn’t know much about “Mormonism”, NYT reporter Zeve Chafets, reports:
“I was about to jot down this piece of boilerplate when Huckabee surprised me with a question of his own: “Don’t Mormons,” he asked in an innocent voice, “believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?”
Of all of the things that the theologian Huckabee could ask, why that one?
I have a theory. Huckabee was speaking in code.
Huckabee knows full well that Fundamentalist Christians consider the Mormon faith a cult. In his sly way, Huckabee had to appear neutral to the NYT reporter but at that the same time, appease or affirm his own belief that the Mormon faith is a cult.
But why this question?
First, to people of the Judeo-Christian heritage, the “devil” is the would-be author of “cults”. If Fundamentalist Christians can connect the Mormon Jesus with the author of cults, then half the battle is over. However, this attack is more subversive than that.
Second, this question is ultimately about the Orthodox Christian Trinity doctrine. The Trinity doctrine as formulated during the 3rd and 4th centuries declared Jesus "uncreated".
Therefore the LDS doctrine that Jesus is a created spirit son of God DIRECTLY threatens the Trinity doctrine.
Instead of talking about the real difference, between the Orthodox Trinity and the Mormon(Latter-day Saint) Godhead, Fundamentalist Christians attempt to smear the Mormon faith by hiding behind a vague, brief, and distant connection between Jesus and the Devil (Lucifer) as “brothers”. The only connection that Latter-day Saints (Mormons) believe in between Jesus and Lucifer is that they both originated with the God the Father.
Do Fundamentalist Christians offer the Mormon belief that Jesus and the devil are arch-enemies? No.
My theory is that Huckabee couldn't politically say that Mormons are a cult when asked if the Mormon faith was a "religion or cult" and that's why he followed up "on his own" with the question about "Jesus and the Devil as brothers". He wanted to say to fundamentalist Christians, in essence, "Look, I am one of you, really I am, I can't really say what I really believe because it will look like a bigoted response so I am going to speak in code".
Now Huckabee says he’s sorry. Ok fine. Perhaps he could go the extra mile and just admit Mormons believe that Jesus and the Devil are arch enemies and are not “brothers” in the Christian sense.
Did Huckabee contract hoof in mouth disease from Al Sharpton?
Huckabee knows that Satan was a morning star that rebelled and was sent down to earth with a third of the hosts of heaven and he knows that Romney knows that.
Satan, a son of God tempted Job, and I guess he is still tempting some as I read net account of half truths.
In 1998 the Baptists had a convention in Salt Lake City for the sole purpose of converting Mormons to the truth of evangelicals.
Huckabee spoke at that convention and included an anti-Mormon book in the press packet. Huckabee knows all about the Mormons and is basing his run for President on the anti-Mormon fear that he and other Baptist and Evangelical ministers have perpetuated.
Huckabee wasn't asking a question he was planting a code of hysteria, he knows all to well about the Mormons. Huckabee is serving his own self interest to be president at the expense of other Americans who pay taxes, serve in the military and are upstanding citizens.
I once thought Huckabee was a candidate to look at, now I have found out a very disturbing truth about him. He loves money and power more then what's best for America.
I am so disappointed in both Huckabee and Giuliani, if either is elected as the party's nominee; I will be leaving this corrupt, bigoted Republican Party.
The NRO is exactly right, these two men will blow a crack in the party so wide and deep, the DNC will be jumping for joy.

I would advise everyone to go to the LDS website and see for themselves what they believe. Not that it matters in a presidential candidate but...that the media is pulling this WAY out of porportion. As to the issue of having a Theology Degree and not knowing what the Mormons believe, that is entirely POSSIBLE. Theology is the study of God not of other beliefs. I have a B.A. degree in Pastoral Ministry - similar to a Theology Degree and I never took a class on other religions. I have since studied other religions/cults on my own and still at times get confused with who believes what...so the question Mike posed to the reporter was understandable. Good grief people wake up! Mitt Romney ought to know this because Mike has been very gracious to him up to this point...not attacking him on issues (and believe me there are plenty)...Just to prove the point of Mitt as a flip flopper...he "graciously" accepts Mikes apology (which I don't think he needed to apologize, for the above reasons) then side-slams Mike for saying that attacking someone's faith is unAmerican. So basically it's like, (to your face) I accept your apology... I know this is taken out of context...then to the media this man is evil for attacking my faith. And by the way...no body seems to mind attacking Mike Huckabee on his faith...he's fair game, but Romney is not? The duplicity of the media and people astound me.
I am disappointed in Huckabee for what appears to be a blatant lie, for a theologian. I know he discussed the Mormon religion in his schooling (even though it was probably as the butt of jokes). Perhaps he slept through that lesson or avoided the question as a pastor - I really doubt that? I hope Huckabee will consider an apology, not just to Mitt Romney, but to millions of Mormons. I had considered Huckabee a pretty good choice, but using religion to try to take the White House is a poor way to gain respect, especially when his own comments make him appear to be a liar.
I would not like to see what happens when Huckabee makes his little religion slip in India, Pakistan, or Japan.
Hey Andrew,
You and I blogged our different points on a lot of blogs by now. I want to ask you a question and I really am interested in this. What happened to get you to start going after Mormons the way you do? There's got to be a story there...I'm not asking this to pick a fight or anything, I really just want to know.
Mr Elbeau - I have just seen this blog and it is April 19th 08 , I would be very happy to communicate further my London phone is 01144 208 829 8570 - or if you live in Utah or Idaho when I am next in the USA we could meet .
In answer to your question quite simply I do not want you or any Mormon to perish in a lost eternity in Hell .
I wish you and every Mormon well
