Romney goes positive in final Iowa push

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 31, 2007 10:22 AM

After hammering Mike Huckabee for weeks in TV ads in Iowa, Mitt Romney is going positive for his closing message to Hawkeye State Republicans who could help decide his fate on Thursday.

In the new ad, complete with soaring music, Romney speaks directly to the camera, saying that voters "everywhere" have told him that the country faces challenges too big for Washington politicians.

"I've spent my life tackling big problems," he says, ticking off his work as a corporate turnaround consultant, leading the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and serving as Massachusetts governor.

Summarizing his campaign platform, he then vows to grow the economy, stop illegal immigration, oppose abortion, and preserve American values.

"It's time to turn around Washington," he concludes in the ad, which was first obtained by Time magazine's political website, The Page.

  1. If he does what he says he will do, he's the guy.

  1. Mitt Romney has cosistently shown through his personal and professional life experiences that he is well grounded, focused and committed to success. His "attack" ads detailing the documented records for Huckabee abd McCain have been grossly mischaracterized in the press and by Huckabee ad McCain. Not once did either of them offer proof that the information detailed was not true they just attacked the messenger. In politics, it is vital that competitors showcase the differences they have with one another - that is what Mitt Romney has done and nothing more.

We face serious times and challenges in this country and we need a proven leader like Mitt Romney to guide us along the right path. The days of "feel good" policies must be brought to a halt - they are largely responsible for the issues we face. We need a grown up leading us and that is what Mitt Romney has proven himself to be.

  1. If you want to read a very informative article about Mitt Romney and his record, check this out:

Here is an interesting excerpt from the article:

"While playing up the theology of Romney’s religion, the media have downplayed his record of success. Few stories mention that he is both a Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School graduate. Romney started Bain Capital, a venture capital firm, from almost nothing in 1984. In evaluating whether to invest in a company, Romney would conduct massive research and play devil’s advocate to flush out facts.

Relying on those techniques and data he developed about the true amount companies spend on office supplies, Romney decided to invest $600,000 in Staples before it opened its first store in Brighton, Mass. After the opening, he invested millions more.

“He made eight times his money in three years,” Tom Stemberg, founder of Staples, tells me.

Bain Capital now has assets of $40 billion, and Romney is worth close to $250 million. In addition, he established a trust valued at $100 million for his five sons.

Romney worked similar miracles when he took over the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, turning a $397 million budget shortfall into a $56 million profit. As Massachusetts governor, he turned a $3 billion deficit into a surplus without raising taxes. Along the way, Romney developed a health insurance plan designed to cover all Massachusetts residents. It’s now being copied by other states."

Lets elect someone who has a proven record of success to be President, that someone is Mitt Romney.

  1. He's the real deal. We need a leader like Romney now. So many important issues facing us. He'll bring energy, vitality, determination, experience, commitment and leadership. If it's all about "change" he's got my vote.

  1. Did anyone else notice that mysterious floating flag in the background? Maybe it was some sort of bookshelf, but it gave me a warm fuzzy all over!

  1. His timing with the positive and negative ads in Iowa was just impeccable, and his investment decisions have always been shockingly wise. Romney is a political and financial genius. I would love having him as President.

  1. Having lived with Romney as Gov for 4 years I was very happy with his performance for the first two. When he decided to run for president it was a dramatic shift the right. His views do change wind. As a republican in a Democratic state I could NEVER vote for Romney again. I would rather have McCain, someone who is proven and not subject what Polls are saying. Romney real is a big fake. Think about it he has to self finance this campaign as the money is drying up. Rumor in Boston is that he had to do another Large cash infusion to keep the ship floating.

  1. Tom, he has raised over 44 million from others, over 10 million in the last reporting period alone -- his money is hardly drying up. Af for his change, did you notice any difference in how he governed?

  1. If you will forgive a Carolinian for his lack of fluency in current New England politics, then may I advance this observation about the Romney candidacy which perhaps may be more amenable to long-distance viewing than from next-door neighborhood analysis:

Mitt Romney has certain similarities with 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry of the same great and hallowed Commonwealth of Massachusetts:

Knowledgeable, affable, demonstrating great command of the issues, capable of providing sound and relevant detailed points to back up his main platform, comfortable with the principles and traditions of the progressive center of his political party, resilient, determined and, as some of us like to say down here in the South, obviously a "good-hearted guy."

Therefore, like Sen. Kerry of the Democratic Party, former Gov. Romney of the Republican Party will have to "stay on the lookout" for sneak attacks within disgruntled factions of his own party and from less principled adversaries in the opposing party. He also must keep his campaign focused on the future even as his opponents seek to portray inaccurate or misleading images of his past personal and political experiences.

All in all, may we say a cheerful and resounding, "Thanks, y'all," to the people of Massachusetts for giving us two such stellar, outstanding and inspiring candidates in the past two presidential campaigns, Democrat John Kerry in 2004 and Republican Mitt Romney in 2008.

  1. Romney is the biggest phony currently running Rep or Dem. If Kerry lost because of flip flopping he has no shot. Explain how a Republican runs for Governor of a Democratic state, and wins under his liberal stand on a few issues, manly abortion. He completely changes his stance after being elected. HMMMM! I bet he was pro life all along and knew he would not win with that stance in MA, so he lied and came to his new or should I say real stance after being elected.

  1. Mitt Romney is an able, intelligent, proven leader. His all around experience come from academics (Law and MBA degrees from Harvard – Cum Laude), private business (CEO), voluntary service (2002 Winter Olympics), public life (Governor), a successful family man, one-wife husband, father and grand-father. This campaign is about bringing a positive change to our great nation. Mitt Romney means a better economy, a stronger military, and stronger family values. His record speaks for itself. He will do what he says he will do. He will turn around Washington. He has gained my respect and my vote. Go Mitt!!

  1. Kerry's flip flop: "I voted for the troop funding before I voted against it" occurred across a few days. Romney's sole flip flop--abortion occurred across years. To those from Massachusetts who are disheartened to see a more conservative Romney running for President--what did you expect--him to run as a Massachusett's Republican? He is running for President of the whole country--he better migrate to the right from center because he needs to represent a far more prevalent conservative--AMERICAN conservatives. It is no different that what every governor has done in the past. He has to move away from some issues peculiar to his state. If he did a good job in Massachusetts in two years as you state--and it sounds like he did more in two years than most do in four--you would be foolish, stubborn or both not to vote for him again.
