Bill O'Reilly in confrontation at Obama event

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 5, 2008 02:20 PM

By Sasha Issenberg, Globe Staff

NASHUA, N.H. -- Aides to Barack Obama, one of two candidates to travel with Secret Service protection, have a policy of not discussing issues related to the senator's security -- unless the potential threat is conservative talk show host Bill O'Reilly.

Secret Service officials separated O'Reilly and Obama aide Marvin Nicholson after the Fox News Channel personality grabbed Nicholson on a post-speech rope line in a high-school gym here. According to a witness, O'Reilly reached with two hands for Nicholson -- who at 6-foot-8 had a slight height advantage over O'Reilly -- because he stood between O'Reilly's cameraman and Obama as the newsman called out for the candidate's attention.

"He started pushing me and telling me to get out of his shot," Nicholson told reporters afterwards. "Then he said I was 'low-class.' "

"He called me 'low-class' after he started shoving me," Nicholson clarified.

O'Reilly, interviewed afterward by phone on Fox News, said he tried "to gently remove" Nicholson because he was standing in front of Fox's camera, the Associated Press reported.

"We're sorry we had to have that little confrontation, but no one on this earth is going to block a shot on "The O'Reilly Factor." It is not going to happen," O'Reilly said.

Nicholson, Obama's national trip director and a former traveling aide to Senator John F. Kerry known as the "chief of stuff," said he could not recall a similar physical encounter.

"I did the last campaign and I did this one," said Nicholson. "I've never seen a member of the press put their hands on a staffer before."

  1. This article is not entirely true. Secret service officials did not separate Bill O'Reilly and the Obama aid. Only after stepping infront of Bill's camera TWICE, did Bill push him out of the way.

Seems to me the aid deserved it. He was being a dirty SOB.

I was there, and I'm on my iPhone right now. Please keep your facts straight, Boston Globe.

    Thank you

  1. Comment, #1, Jeremy. Read what you wrote. "Only after stepping infront (sic) of Bill's camera TWICE, did Bill push him out of the way." How is this supposed to improve my impression of Bill O'Reilly's behavior? I must say, there is plenty of room for such improvement, but this event, even as you want to report it, does nothing but reinforce my low opinion of someone whose time has very much passed. It will be a good thing for America when pushy, disreputable people like talk-show-host B.O. are not quite so loud, and dignified, intelligent people, like Senator B.O., can properly be heard.

  1. Why is it that out of all of the press following the campaigns O'Reilly gets into a scuffle? I guess this must be another conspiracy to "get" him.

  1. Obama cant answer questions because his entire platform is based on nothing more then the word "Change". Candidates run on change when they dont know anything, and have no other hope of being elected. One man does not have the power to change anything in Washington, but young voters do not know this stratagey. It would be nice if we could elect someone who can do more then sound like MLK, and appear to promote something that in fact he could never hope to accomplish. Is this American Idol or a presidential election? If you really believe the hogwash Obama is spreading and cast that vote for so-called change, be prepared for the shock of your life.

  1. It is obvious from comment #1 that you are not a "professional", how can you justify such irresponisble behaviour? Especially in an environment where the underlying feeling is one of intelligence and leadership. People like you cause America not to move forward and continue to reign as the #1 country.... Oh, civility works sometimes..Just so you know

  1. I am a heatlhy and happy conservative who watches Fox daily and O'reill often. I have gradually watched him less as I have become annoyed by his bully pulpit and nature, even when he is right. It will be interesting to see "his" video monday night. Will it exonerate him or provide further proof that he is in fact, a bully. Rich

  1. Obama's aide is a smart, experienced guy and knows who O'Reilly is. If he stepped in front of the camera twice, it was a conscious effort to provoke a confrontation with a media outlet that the Democrats view as "conservative", ie. not PC, and not sympathetic to Obama.

That just reinforces my impression that Obama, if elected, won't be the President of the entire United States - just of those who agree with his point of view.

  1. Bill O'Reily is a demagogue. He uses imtimidation tactics to get his way. I think he is mentally ill with delusions of grandeur. A guy who used to run Germany used similar tactics with his thugs to take over a whole country. Shout 'em down, push 'em outa the way, run over them.

  1. O'Reilly is one of the persons who should be up on war crimes charges for pushing the war that the architects Cheney, Wolfowitz, et al created and right wing jerks who worked for Fox or were receiving kickbacks promoted to the fawning radio/tv dittoheads. He's an egomaniac idiot who does not care one whit about the US. O'Reilly pushing people at Obama's appearance is his cheap and sad way of getting some publicity for his show. All those who pushed for a war we did not need to fight have blood on their hands.

At the minimum he should apologize.

It's not o.k. for the press to do this. They understand it,
except for O'reilly. Well O'reilly just lost a listener.

  1. #5 - interesting perspective....you apparently believe that Obama has nothing to offer other than "change", although it is apparent that you haven't taken the time to go to his website and read his very direct and complex initiatives. It may be true that "one man does not have the power to change anything in Washington", but we certainly need a President who will inspire millions to work together to make real changes. Or are you so cynical that the only person you would have as President is one with no vision for the future?

  1. Bill was right. The Obama security guy should not have been blocking O'Reilly's camera crew from doing their work. How many times should you have to ask a 6'8" guy nicely before he should be expected to move? The funny thing is that being 6'8" the guy probably never expected anyone to actually make him move. I'm glad the 6'4" Bill did it!

  1. Did anyone see the picture (which was also in TIME magazine) of Obama refusing to put his hand on his heart during the pledge. During the pledge you're SUPPOSED to put your hand over your heart. (See THIS-- http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/36/301.html). He also refused to wear an American Flag lapel pin.

Maybe a lot of you are saying "Hey, big deal, I don't do that either." That's all well and fine... But he is RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. It's what America stands for! It really saddens me that people, mostly my age, are routing for him. Are you all idiots? He clearly has another secret plan for us.

As another blogger said, "He is an Al Qaeda sympathizer with grand plans to take down this country. Do not be fooled." You get elected and you're in for ONE term. Then you run for president at a time when the US is vulnerable. So many people are disgusted with Bush that they don't even open their eyes to see WTF they're about to put in there. He has his agenda and is moving ahead as planned.

If Hillary loses, I'd vote republican. Even if it were for Guiliani the idiot. I'd even go as far as voting for that wacko Ron Paul.

  1. To #9:

O'Reily was not on the line along where the other media reporters were. He and his Fux crew jumped over that line, when the Obama aid saw that he blocked faux's camera and told them to get back on the line where the rest of the media were. This is clasic o'reilly. Not surprised. I am glad Obama's aid put him on his place. Obama doesn't need to appear on any of faux's shows or programs after all they do is Bash democrats. Someone needs to put those people in line.

    Go Obama!!

  1. In a rally with thousands of people, it's a massive security risk to reach across the barrier and start a physical fight 10 feet from the candidate. The Secret Service was smart to step in and nip this behavior in the bud.

It's unbelievable that he's excusing his behavior. Really, it's forgivable to get a little carried away in the excitement of a rally. But it's not OK to pretend it was somehow justified because "grr, I'm Bill O'Reilly and nobody gets in my way!"

I mean, what if everyone acted that way? There'd be a stampede!

  1. The sad thing is, after trying to barge past the clearly posted barrier and physically assaulting a member of a candidate's staff, Bill-o still got his one-on-one time with Obama and the promise of a possible appearance on O'Reilly's show.

Don't reward someone for boorish behavior.

And a lot of people here are making the assumption that the aide was actively blocking the shot. This was a media event. O'Reilly and crew were just trying to short cut. He usually sends a some intern to do this kind of ambush journalism.

Probably the only reason he didn't get his way at first was because this guy was big enough to stand his ground. Bill's not used to that. He's used to poking and shoving on people smaller than him. One punch in the mouth might do some good. He's lucky Secret Service didn't mistake him for a racist nutjob.

  1. Why is Obama so afraid of O'Reilly? Sounds like the whole thing started because he is trying dodge Bill as usual. Senator Clinton should pull a few strings for O'Reilly so he can ask some legitimate questions of. That will surely expose any weakness in Obama!

  1. O'Reilly is desparately trying to be relevant and to appear mainstream, centrist, and independent .
Four years age he told viewers he and his staff were working diligently to get Kerry on his show. Kerry, to his great credit, never did appear.
Obama should just politely decline and not appear. There aren't any meaningful number of potential votes for Obama in O'Reilly's audience despite what O'Reilly would claim. Fox viewership is more Republican that any other subgroup, including Evangelical Christians, self-described conservatives, etc.

  1. It is understandable that when Nicholson intentionally stepped in front of B.O's camera after they moved once, that B.O. would have been upset. I find many of the comments either to be understanding this point, or going off on a preconceived bias against B.O. An earlier commentor even has the audacity to draw a reference to Hitler, obviously he is not a student of history and has an even rudimentary knowledge of the "socialist" movement from which that history was born of.

Please, this is just a intentional attempt to block Fox's camera, that was called on by BO.

  1. I wonder how this might have turned out at a GOP rally with a progressive reporter - somehow I doubt it would have ended so quietly. Knowing the wingnut right, half the crowd would have drawn weapons and a shooting melee ensued. Personally, if I were any of the right-wing candidates, I'd be terrified of just such an event. Of course, you can't screen for guns though, not when you're eagerly lapping up the NRA's money.

  1. Typical stunt. Try jumping the line with a camera man at a Bush rally and see what happens? Oh wait, Bush doesn't do rallys. Only carefully scripted appearances where selected, vetted supporters are allowed in. I can here O'Reilly, "well sure, the secret service should have shot the guy, he jumped the line, wouldn't get back when told and then grabbed the security guy. He was asking for it.

  1. At every large event there is a "rope line" along which the "hoi polloi" are allowed to stand in order to meet the candidate after the event. There are also areas provided for the press, who are granted much closer access to the candidate during these events than anyone else. The television personality involved was not in one of the press areas but had moved onto the rope line. Anyone who has attended many of these events knows how frequently campaign workers have to repeatedly ask the press to move away from the rope line so the people who attended the event can have a chance to meet and greet the candidate. The claim that the television personality was preserving the rights of a free press by shoving someone ignores the fact that he and his crew chose to step on the rights of others for their "shot."

I simply can not believe the hatred and racism I am reading here that have I stumbled on just looking for information about a paper I am doing for my leadership class for my Doctorate in Leadership. It simply demonstrates to me that Senator Obama is correct and that racism and hatred is alive and well and is inbred deeply into the veins of the American people of every color. What are you saying , for example #75? You are so full of hatred and anger it spews out through my laptop until I feel smothered...and 76, you really listen to that crap O'Reilly rattles out? Most of the time he is pompus ass,. Oh please, do not waste your time. We have to have a President and another Clinton is not going to work any better than the first...Sex in our honorable Oval Office...think about that one...or anold man who has run so many times he was bound to get it eventually...If you are for America than honor her and please 75 & 76 watch your language as God is watching you. 75 how much of God's love have you shared today? I am voting for Barack Obama and I am proud of it and my skin color happen to be a very pale white.
