Clinton hammers economic issues

Posted by Marcella Bombardieri, political reporter January 16, 2008 04:56 PM

After days spent bashing Barack Obama's record on Iraq and fending off charges of racial insensitivity, the Clinton campaign has apparently decided, at least for now, that it would much rather talk about the economy. Over and over and over.

The campaign released not one, but two, memos today about Hillary Clinton's plans to bolster the flailing economy and avoid recession, with a variety of funds for emergency housing, energy assistance and unemployment insurance.

The candidate is holding a roundtable with Nevadans on the topic in Reno today. And she got on an unusual conference call with reporters -- and with Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine -- to hammer in her economic stimulus proposals, which she first unveiled last week.

She also says she wants to hear from you, the voter. The main display at HillaryClinton.com invites readers to submit their own tales of economic woe.

Conveniently prompted by a reporter's question, Clinton eagerly accepted the opportunity to suggest that Barack Obama wouldn't know how to handle a recession -- while also comparing him, implicitly, to President Bush.

Referring to Obama's recent comments that he would be a visionary, not an "operating officer," Clinton said, "I believe strongly that the president has to run the government and manage the economy. I don't think you can have a hands-off approach to the presidency of the United States at any time, particularly after the presidency of George W. Bush, who adopted that philosophy, and told us often he'd be the big-picture person and leave it to his advisors to make all the tough decisions."

  1. Obama has made several recent statements highlighting his inexperience in running a bureaucracy, and his lack of organizational skills.

"I ask my staff never to hand me paper until two seconds before I need it, because I will lose it," he said in the Democratic debate Tuesday night. "And my desk in my office doesn't look good. I've got to have somebody around me who is keeping track of that stuff.”

The Illinois senator added that those qualities were not as important in a president as the ability to bring Americans together to make progress on issues stymied for years by partisan struggles.

Clinton challenged Obama's view of the role of a president in last night's debate, and her campaign continues to push the issue in e-mails.

In her comments today, she argued that the Bush era through a "mismanaged war" and the failure to react quickly to Hurricane Katrina has proved that "government by advisor" doesnt work. The country needs, said Clinton, "a hands-on manager."

There is nothing in Clinton's resume suggesting experience in managing a big bureaucracy. Her time heading the Clinton administration's health care reform effort was marked by criticism of her hands-on management style.

  1. Clinton likes to talk, talk, talk about her 'stong' leadership qualities. When push comes to shove she has demonstrated only poor judgment. Clinton voted to authorize the war in Iraq. The reason this must be revisited a thousand times over is that it is the single biggest issue of our time - and she blew it. Very poor judgment. You can package and sell the Clinton candidate all you like - but the truth has been documented. Mrs. Clinton blew it when it mattered most.
