Clinton, McCain lead in California

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 14, 2008 04:07 PM

A new poll just out this afternoon shows Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican John McCain ahead in California, the biggest prize on Super Tuesday on Feb. 5.

The CNN/Los Angeles Times/Politico survey shows Clinton with 47 percent support among likely Democratic voters, Barack Obama with 31 percent, and John Edwards with 10 percent.

On the Republican side, McCain leads with 20 percent, ahead of Mitt Romney with 16 percent, Rudy Giuliani with 14 percent, Mike Huckabee with 13 percent, Ron Paul with 8 percent, and Fred Thompson with 6 percent.

More than 60 percent of Democrats, but less than 40 percent of Republicans, said they were certain of their vote. The poll was conducted Friday through Sunday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points among Democrats and 6 percentage points among Republicans.

The California primaries will award 370 Democratic delegates and 170 Republican ones.

  1. Barack made a speech against Iraq, but when he can actually do something about it in the Senate, he voted just like Hillary.

    All talk, not deliverables.

  1. Barack Obama wasn't around when it MATTERED.

    Hillary Clinton voted for Iraq

Ron Paul voted against Iraq initially and wants to bring the troops home now.

  1. How will leaving Iraq and bringing troops home stabilize the middle-east situation? Are Americans now blind to the fact that we are dependant on foreign oil and that we must take a stand against terrorism?

  1. Only John McCain has the foreign policy experience necessary to keep our military the strongest in the world. Remember how quickly the Iranian hostages were freed after Reagan was elected?

  1. MICHIGAN ROMNEY BACKER SWITCHES TO HUCKABEE
    by John Gizzi
    Posted: 01/14/2008

As most polls of likely primary voters in Michigan now show a near-tie between Republicans Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and John McCain, the Romney camp got a jolt Saturday as a key backer announced he was switching his support to Huckabee.

With three days to go before the primary, State Rep. Fulton J. Sheen of Allegan County, introduced Huckabee at the Amway Grand Hotel and announced he was changing to the former Arkansas governor from native Michigander Romney. In an exclusive interview the evening before his announcement, stalwart conservative Sheen -- namesake-nephew of the legendary Roman Catholic bishop in the 1940’s and 50’s -- said that Romney’s attacks on Huckabee’s Fair Tax proposal convinced him to switch to the Arkansas man.

  1. Yay for Hillary! I'm tired of all the Obama hype. He is popular because he says pretty words over and over again. Wake up, people!

  1. Hillary is willing to destroy any respect for the Democratc party in order to maintain control of the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton agenda. Obama is as respectable as the Clinton's are tacky. As an Independent woman I will vote for Ethical change, Obama.

  1. barama has voted "present" on more than 130 issues; this to me is not taking a STAND on the issues...

barama says he doesn't have lobbist working with him and if you google "obama + lobbist" you will see he lies as well...

barama has said if he doesn't will this time that he will not run again??? why is this? is it because people will really see what he is all about???

barama wrote a really nice book and told you exactly what he wanted YOU to know??? hmmm

barama has studied all the great inspirational speakers of our time and often uses their message; why isn't he ORIGINAL??? people get brainwashed...hmmm

remember, when it sounds to good to be true, it probably is!!! barama has really played his cards very well and I give him kudos; but I don't want him as my PRESIDENT.... and it's not because he is black!

  1. ''Barack Obama TOOK A STAND against the IRAQ INVASION when it MATTERED?'
-that's sweet sweet talk by Obama.
Right or wrong, crunch time Clinton voted for Iraq Obama would have voted 'Absent' as he did on the Iran resolution.
    But that's consistent Obama conviction.
This guy is all talk but HOLLOW!!

  1. I think Hillary is the Candidate to go the the whitehouse. Obama ideas are empty and vague. Inexperience is not a trade off for experience in the right matters. I want a candidate who is strong not some whimpy soft hearted person who throws out random ideas that people want to hear. Go Hillary

  1. Environmentalists had a movement but it took Nixon the get us the EPA, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act... Not to diminish the environmental movement but it was Nixon with the vision to get it done. With that logic -Go Hillary.

  1. The Iranian hostages should have been freed before the election of Ronald Reagan. The negotiations were already well underway under Carter. Delaying the release of the hostages was a calculated move by Republican heavyweights to take the glory and have it look like a Republican achievement. As we have seen with hostage situations (for many countries) while Bush has president, things don't move that quickly. From November to January would be an impossible timeframe to resolve a situation of that magnitude. In much the same, it was completely false for Reagan to get credit for the fall of communism. The credit there goes to Gorbachev and the work that he had been doing long before Reagan became president. Reagan just happened to be in power when Gorbachev was ready.

  1. McCaine is the only republican i can tolerate and would probly be my choice if the democratic nominee were anyone else but clinton. This decision is based primarily for one reason, Barak and even Edwards are jokes with no experience they were never tested. We are in a time of war no matter how much they try to ignore it, 2008 is no year for a wammy, Hmm its a pity because this election should be a democratic shoo in but clairly the party has shown it can blow this.

  1. This is in reference to number 14, posted by Serena on January 15, 08. You're a stupid ass if you really believe that. Thank God (heard of him?) that most American's are so much smarter than you.
