Clinton the projected winner in Nevada

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 19, 2008 04:10 PM

CBS and CNN are projecting Hillary Clinton as the winner over Barack Obama of the hotly contested Nevada caucuses.

With 52 percent of precincts reporting, Clinton led Obama 52 percent to 44 percent, with John Edwards a distant third with 4 percent.

That gives Clinton a second straight win over Obama, following her comeback win in New Hampshire, as Democrats point to the South Carolina primary on Jan. 26. She won despite the 60,000-member Culinary Workers Union endorsing Obama.

The Clinton campaign boasted of winning despite the powerful Culinary Workers backing for Obama and a Spanish-language radio ad calling Clinton "shameless" because her supporters filed a lawsuit against at-large caucus sites in casinos.

"Today we won a huge victory by overcoming institutional hurdles and one of the worst negative ads in recent memory. This was a victory for all those who work hard and caucused on behalf of Hillary to revive our struggling economy," said a memo from campaign manager Patti Solis-Doyle and chief strategist Mark Penn.

Entrance polls showed that voters rejected those tactics and that Latino voters went for Clinton by a three-to-one margin, they asserted.

"So as we said yesterday, this was a test of whether the voters would win out through a process that gave significant institutional advantages to Hillary’s opponent," the memo said. "Today, Nevadans won and made their voices heard."

  1. I despair for the Democratic Party if voters in the upcoming primaries follow the example of Nevada. The ever-polarizing junior Senator from NY has such high negatives in national polls that her prospects of winning are dim. The country does not need any more Bushes or Clintons in the White House. We have already had 28 years with either a Bush or a Clinton in the executive branch. It's time, as John Kerry, said, "to turn the page." No more Bushes, No more Clintons, No vote for a senator who voted to authorize the invasion and occupation of Iraq!

    =======================

    Come-on! I was expecting a landslide!
    35 years experience!
    A 2 decades political machine!
Skills at spinning, flip-flopping and mad-slinging!
I thought the flop queen would win by, at least 20%
    So...
Barack is a true force to reckon with. Starting from scratch he managed to stand up against the Billary, narrowed the gap this close?

  1. What come back win in New Hampshire? Billary was projected to win by double digits and she barely pulled out a draw, 9 delegates each, with Obama.
This is the most disgusting election in USA history, with the corporate for profit media sources all playing sick slick tricks to marginalize the democratic candidates who aren't Billary Clinton.
the Clintons ar e smarmy elitist conniving dishonest creeps and the fact that they are being successfully marketed doesn't mean anything except the usual: Americans will buy a lot of crap while the world goes to hell in a hand basket.
what a missed opportunity ! if Barack Obam doesn't get the nod, we have missed our last chance to prevent class war and a caste system here in our ugly new oligarchy.

decent candidates like Dodd and Edwards never even got covered in this disgraceful national media influenced instead of informed election setup ...and Kucinich never got a chance to dialogue about matters of import to all americans...

there is such disdain for Bush it ahs translated into disdain for ordinary americans but the real jerks aare the oligarchs who think they have the right to make a particpatory democracy an oligarchic plutocracy

there are more of us losers out here thanoyu gated scommunity winners so wisse up you are creating a monster and it will come back to bite you

  1. Damn Edwards! All he's doing is diluting the "change" vote and handing the election to Clinton. Why doesn't the loser just drop out?
