Democrats say Nevada more evidence of 'enthusiasm gap'

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 19, 2008 05:06 PM

Democrats are crowing again that many more voters came out for their contest today in Nevada than for the Republicans'.

The Nevada Democratic Party reported that with 84 percent of precincts reporting, a record 107,000 people attended the caucuses. That compares to about 34,000 on the GOP side with 78% of precincts reporting.

The Democratic National Committee argues that the "enthusiasm gap" bodes well for the general election in November.

The republicans have a LOT to think about this campaign. For more info, I found an awesome article called "Reagan Babies" at www.SAVAGEPOLITICS.com. Here is an excerpt:
""A baby is an alimentary canal with a laud voice at one end and no responsibility at the other" Ronald Reagan
Last Tuesday was a big day for Republican Candidate Mitt Romney for he came out ahead of all others in Michigan's Primary election. To many this was not a surprise since his father was elected thrice Governor of Michigan in the 60's and, by many citizens' standards, was good for the State. This of course creates a very interesting power struggle within the Grand Old Party since Huckabee and McCain had already won their own primaries, making this race, as of Today, a three-way race. Of course, we have Thompson looking to catch South Carolina's ticket and Rudy Giuliani aiming to do the same in Florida. This last candidate has basically bet all his chips on winning Florida, if he does not win said State, he might as well never had run for the nomination. For many conservatives, this situation within the Republican pool of candidates is both embarrassing and aggravating. Here we have a process which basically tends to eliminate their most ideologically consonant candidates right from the beginning, since they depend on primaries and caucuses in predominantly "blue" states which, to make matters even worse, usually allow independents to participate. In this year's election though, it seems that all this does not matter since none of the participants seems to fulfill their base's expectations. Can any of these candidates face off against Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or John Edwards in a general election?
Since the birth of the Reagan Coalition, the era which brought to the Republican Party the juncture of both Social Conservatism and Economic Conservatism, the Grand Old Party has been unable to keep track of their own ideology, usually loosing itself to divergent group interests and in the process becoming a massive political tent that caters to both corporate and institutional fluctuations. Instead of assuming the responsibility of admitting to itself that Economic Conservatism, a belief..."

Unless I'm counting wrong the VOTES total for Republicans are over 40,000
The votes total for the Democrats are a bit above 10,000
Keep in mind that ALL votes have not been totaled yet.

Either the VOTES are wrong or this Post is incorrect.

Republicans out voted the Democrats. It is that simple. Please retract above post if wrong.

I am a white female - and I do not see this election process as having anything to do with either race OR gender. I see it as 'who is the best person for the job' and who has the most integrity. From what I have seen in Nevada, even today at the caucus, that person IS indeed Barack Obama.
I had an elderly woman, who walked with the assistance of a cane, come up to me at the caucus today. She was extremely upset. While she was not from my district, I was not going to turn her away. She proceed to tell me how she went to sit in the area set aside for her district and was told if she sat there, her vote would be counted for Clinton, despite the fact she is an Obama supporter. I walked her back over, and very loudly told her that her Obama vote was HER RIGHT, and if she had any more trouble, to walk across the room and I would help her, basically, see to it that her vote went went where it was supposed to go. This happened well before the time that the doors were to be closed, the chair had not yet announced that the groups should form. What kind of campaigns intimidate little old ladies? I'll tell you - those that lack integrity!

As it stands, it is my understanding that the caucus rules here were that anyone standing in line before 12:00 noon was allowed to caucus, that Independents could register as Democrats AT the caucus, AND that we were ALL allowed to sign in - not just Clinton supporters! And yet, in many caucus areas today, that is exactly what happened! How disgusting that the Clinton campaign is behaving in a way that SHAMES ALL DEMOCRATS!
The whole world is watching this election process - don't think for a moment that they are not...and, Clinton, your campaign tactics are embarrassing us before the world! I sincerely hope the other caucuses/primaries will keep a strong eye out for these 'tactics' and do their best to prevent them! Do not let the rules be bent by those who seek to tilt the situation in their own favor. This is supposed to be a DEMOCRATIC society.

Lastly, with only 88% of the precincts in, many of the major newspapers, media, already announced the winner as Clinton...how can that be? The spread was 587 votes more for Clinton...and now, at 98% of the votes in, last I looked, it was still showing a 587 vote spread...does anyone else see something wrong with this picture? Also, it originally showed Clinton with 13 electoral votes and Obama with 12, when it was actually the other way around...and has since been corrected. Before this is over, I wonder just what else will have to be corrected?

Let us just hope Democrats don't get complacent & stay home in future elections! And I think Super Tuesday will be loads of fun! Let's also hope John Edwards get more votes - he's the one I want to be the next President, but many Americans seem to have bought the Corporate Media's dictate that this is a 2-person race now. Balderdash to that!
