Edwards draws direct contrasts with rivals

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 15, 2008 10:53 AM

Democrat John Edwards, trailing in his native state and seeking to jump-start his presidential bid, takes direct aim at rivals Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in a series of bite-sized TV ads.

The four 10-second spots, which begin airing today in South Carolina, each show photos of Clinton and Obama while the announcer poses a question. In one, the query is: "Which Democrat opposed NAFTA and other trade deals that send American jobs overseas?" In the second, "Which Democrat has never taken a dime of campaign money from Washington lobbyists?" In the third, "Who’s the only Democrat who would ban Washington lobbyists from the White House staff?" And in the fourth, "Who’s the only Democrat that beats all the Republicans in the recent CNN poll?"

They all end with, "John Edwards is the only one."

The ads represent a new tack by Edwards, who won South Carolina in 2004, but is a distant third in the latest polls leading up to the Jan. 26 primary. He insists that he will continue on -- win or lose -- through Super Tuesday on Feb. 5, but another third-place finish risks having Clinton and Obama turn the Democratic nomination contest even more into a two-person race.

  1. I like the ad. Short and to the point.

I wish we could see all of them.

  1. I love Edwards, but he has to stop joining with Obama to harsh on Hillary.

Edwards must remember a time when U.S.A was loved, our economy was doing great, a time when little old ladys were not being searched at air ports.

Edwards must remember the Clinton family has a Loyal base.

I would love to see a Clinton Edwards ticket

  1. Restoring the Middle Class, Prosperity and Quality Jobs in the United States

You must have a viable strategy that will be inherently financially supported and carried forward by the "invisible hand of economic globalization".
The US is declining as the global economic leader, only because the Fed Gov does not have a viable strategy. The US became the Economic Leader of the World only by the supported hard work of Jefferson, Fulton, Franklin, Edison, Westinghouse, Henry Ford, and countless technically creative individuals, engineers and scientists, inventors, who as highly creative individuals, led the world in INNOVATION. (Greenspan has listed INNOVATION as the missing ingredient in the current US strategy, that was previously was in place, and the related Intellectual Property and Patents, built this country to become the World Leader).
As a graduate engineer and small entity inventor, I have started ventures and provided quality jobs, however, the large entities, like the old “robber barons” have managed to rob me of some of my Intellectual Property.

The policies of Fed Gov, large entities, venture capitalists, CEO’s, and powers of influence, consider what actually built this US, erroneously is high risk, and strongly discourage, financial support for qualified individual technologists, inventors, scientists, and engineers. Most important the current US decline can only be eradicated by a new direction to create a quality domestic industry, protected from the “offshore competition” by innovations Americans control with US Patents. Studies at MIT and other entities have proven that these qualified individuals working independently have, always created the most significant inventions and new manufacturing with quality jobs.

Restoring the Middle Class, prosperity and quality jobs in the US will only happen when you create Support Programs and restore tax shelters for financial support for individual qualified engineers, technologists, inventors, and start-ups. In this way, the current 80% employment that is provided by small entities would generate a wealthy middle class, instead of a group of “hamburger flippers”. This will also solve the problem of math and science leadership of young people, and encourage the neglected 40% of high IQ students to pursue math and science.

  1. Go Edwards. I'll contribute on Friday the 18th and make that day so significant the MSM will notice.

And it isn't the other Democratic candidates making it appear a two way race-its the media.

Everyone should speak out on this shutting out by the media of Mr Edwards because it could be your candidate or your issue next.

    Speak out America

  1. For Ryan -

give up on the haircut. it was a year ago. there is a lot of substance going on with all the candidates, focus on that.

Edwards took my money. And yep, i am a lawyer. Does that mean I can't contribute to his campaign because i believe he stands up for all americans? That is crazy. Look his policies. Lawyers represent people, if you see a conflict because of where he has money coming from, please point it out to us. Obama takes money from coal and nuclear power, and then his policies reflect that, despite those issues seemingly divergent from his core policies.

Edwards admits he is imperfect. You can talk about his haircut and his home, but the substance is what is important. Let's talk about nuclear power, let's talk about who has the best policies, lets talk about who has substance and details on a plan for jobs and economic stimulus (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/14/opinion/14krugman.html?em&ex=1200546000&en=a538bdbb60602bf4&ei=5087%0A), etc.

    If that's all you've got...you don't have much.

Go Edwards, 2008. Change. Policy for the American people, not the interests of companies.

  1. I am a liberal democrat, and will only vote for one candidate, John Edwards. He is the ONLY candidate who cared and took the time to put together a plan to save our country, to strengthen our economy, to lift the American people out of the dire poverty the globalist far right and far left have sought to impose upon us. The ONLY candidate who will strengthen our middle class, return to the American people the ability for citizens to lift themselves up out of poverty. He is the ONLY candidate who will either end or renegotiate bad trade deals like NAFTA and MFN for China so they NO LONGER continue to hurt American workers. He is the ONLY candidate who will end the ability for corporate interests to funnel POISONOUS and CONTAMINATED products into our country. He is the ONLY candidate who
will END the ability for CORPORATE ELITES to WRITE our LAWS.

I will NEVER vote for Clinton or Obama. BOTH of them are BOUGHT and PAID for by the corporeate elites. Both claim to want change, but their idea of change is to allow corporate dominance, outsourcing of jobs, insourcing of foreign replacement workers. Both demand "free market" control of our country and lives. We've seen what this has done under the Bush administration, and should recognize that half of what Bush was able to get away with, was because of changes made by Bill Clinton. I regret having voted for Bill twice. A more traditional democrat would never have helped sell our nation out from under us.

Edwards is the ONLY candidate of change, he will TAKE BACK our country for us, but we MUST have his back, and that means voting for John Edwards, and getting your friends and family to do the same.

Mr. Estabrook, the hand of "economic globalization" is what has been destroying our economy. It is about driving American down, it is the attempt by the same corrupt, greedy powers to create a third world caste like system where the majority of our citizens are driven down into dire poverty and helplessness. It's about destroying protections and standards. The US refuses to accept the standards of globalizations prefered superpowers, countries like China and India where the people are little more than chattel, a resource to exploit through enslavement. We say no.

  1. It is totally mystifying that America would be so thrilled with the Clinton-Obama matchup -- and that mainstream media has so thoroughly shut JE out of the process.

Edwards is the candidate who has the done the homework and addressed the major issues of the day with courage and steadiness. The other two speak platitudes and get so easily sidetracked by meaningless spats like this LBJ/MLK thing. I don't get it. I'll be watching tonight's debate to see if Edwards' clear vision can cut through the fog and BS. If you're thinking like I am, contribute, blog and talk to your friends.

  1. I want an Edwards/Kucinich ticket, I think it might be the ticket that saves America! Some people just do not believe the 180 degree, about face, that has been made by Edwards. We just can't trust him after he shut up and went away like a good corporate puppet after the stolen election of 2004! We just can't trust him after he voted for the War and voted for the Patriot Act. If he would name Kucinich as his running mate right now then maybe we could truat him again......it's worth a try if he is seriously a populist now! Lora Chamberlain

  1. if you think $400 dollars is a lot for a haircut, you should see how much Hillary spends on her personal beautician following her around this campaign, making her 60 year-old face look 40!!!

that's why she started crying, when they asked about how do you get up every morning...she started thinking about the bill from the salon, and it made her upset!!!

At least Edwards' hair looks like a million bucks! i think it's a good deal!

  1. I like these ads, too. And I like John Edwards' passion for returning our democracy to the people. I'm old enough and have seen enough to believe that Edwards is absolutely correct in what it's going to take to change the corrupt system currently in place in Washington. I'm not naive enough any more to believe that powerful corporations and special interests are going to suddenly want to play nice and give away their power, just because you've got a fresh-faced politician making nice speeches about working together. I fervently hope that voters will start to see the real differences between Edwards and the rest of the Democrats and vote for the man who is committed to making real change happen on behalf of regular working people, on behalf of the environment, on behalf of our soldiers in Iraq. Hope these ads help !!

  1. Since the media was all bought by major corporations during the Bush administration, its no surprise that they bend over backwards to exclude Edwards from their coverage. Edwards is running among the front of the pack solely on his merit and doggedly determined campaign organization, not through any media assistance that's for sure. Let's hope these new ads help those with little time and little money, those with the most to gain from an Edwards presidency, to recognize the need to vote for him.

  1. What is painfully clear to us is that John Edwards is the forgotten man in this race. It is also clear that Obama and Clinton have co-opted Edwards' populist message; the changes is their rhetoric is there for all to see.
Has anyone in the lazy, sold out media even mentioned this? Of course not, that would highlight Edwards' populist campaign, attention to Edwards is the last thing the powers that be want is a comparison between the front-runners and Edwards.
Once a living Horatio Alger story would be heralded as someone to support; that was before the "greed is good" gang took over the world!
When Edwards is not being ignored he is called a phony; how could a multi-millionaire care about the less fortunate?! Well, he was not born to wealth; all he
has he has earned. Imagine! he'd actually like to see a rebirth of the middle-
class and decent treatment for us all. We must do all we can; if we don't, and he loses, we'll always wonder what if?
I believe that John Edwards would be the president for us all. I hope that those who can, will give what they can, support John Edwards; he's a scrapper and he needs our help!

  1. How many of you have thought of this....John Edwards IS the American Dream and that is why he GETS IT. He came from humble beginnings, from parents who worked hard to make a better life for their children. He was the first in his family to go to college and now this son of humble beginnings is running for President of the United States of America.....isn't that what we all dream for our children? How many times have I looked at my class of young students and thought, "Does a great leader of the future sit before me?" Let's make those dreams a reality. Vote for John Edwards......he gets it.
