Edwards says it's still a three-way race

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 17, 2008 03:06 PM

John Edwards is going all new media -- and bashing the media -- to press the argument that he's still in the thick of the Democratic nomination race.

His campaign launched a web video (watch it here) that asserts that "celebrity candidates" Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are getting more than their share of attention. It cites a study by the Project for Excellence in Journalism that shows that 25 percent of campaign news stories by major outlets mentioned Clinton and more than 15 percent mentioned Obama, Edwards was mentioned less than three percent of the time.

"And they continue to act as if there were only two candidates in the race, even after John Edwards beat Senator Clinton in Iowa and poll after poll show competitive races in Nevada, South Carolina, and other key states," spokesman Chris Kofinis said in a statement accompanying the video. "Perceptions aside, the race for the Democratic nomination is a three person race, and John Edwards will fight for every vote and every delegate all the way to the convention."

I've been noticing for months that the media is forcing Democrats to choose between Clinton and Obama by ignoring Edwards and reporting a two-way race.
This began long before the first vote was even taken in Iowa. Let's ignore the
polls and think for ourselves, Democrats. Who do YOU think would be the
best candidate to win the nomination and take on the Republicans?

Yes, it's shameful. The press have decided to pick our presidents for us through serve/withold.

What is the media so afraid of? Could it be they are owned by corporations that do not want to see John Edwards win? Of course, he won't accept their monetary gifts as Obama and Hillary Clinton do.

After Obama's remarks about the wonderfulness of Reagan to the Reno Gazette yesterday, thank goodness we still have a working class hero in the race. Edwards is the real deal and the only one who will make the real big changes that will bring the middle class back. Maybe Obama was just a little to young to get it about Reagan. (Obama would have been 19 in 1980 when Reagan was elected.)

Edwards is the only person running who understands or will admit that the country is being ran by the corporations. Guess who owns the media outlets?

If you want to see this continue to be a 3 way race (even though it's rarely reported as such), or you are an Edwards supporter, donate today to his campaign...there is a netroots effort today to raise $7 million in one day, and if we pull it off I think it will be hard for the media to ignore...visit johnedwards(dot)com to donate (obviously remover the (dot) and put a . )

Today is the day!! Go Edwards!!

It's about time his campaign mentioned it. Edwards supporters have been screaming about it for months but since we're just, gee, the ordinary, voiceless people that John Edwards is fighting for, the media has been able to effectively ignore us. Go John!!

As much as I dislike Hillary, I cannot vote for Edwards because of his attacks on our economic foundations, specifically entrepreneurs.

Mr. Edwards is blind to the needs of a large portion of this country's people, our business owners.

Of course, I am a Republican anyway, but try to keep an open mind on outlier candidates, even Democrats. I was unfamiliar with Edwards' stands until I spent time in Iowa prior to the Caucuses, where I heard both positive and negative responses to his positions, this being the worst. I do support his right to be heard.

It is shameful that the media has all but blacked-out Edwards. The media did likewise to Wesley Clark in 2004. While I admire Edwards and his wife, I support Obama.

One reason being is that Obama brings all people into the conversation. Notwithstanding I hope Obama will appoint Edwards for a position in his cabinet.

I like Edwards I always have. I prefer Obama. Although if Edwards receives the Democratic nomination, I will support and vote for him.

What if every Edwards supporter jammed the switchboard at MSNBC and tell them we will stop listening and of course we have to do it. Then we move on to CNN etc.

The lack of coverage of Edwards' campaign illustrates the problem with the media: no longer do we have smart, intelligent journalists covering campaigns, journalists who will ask questions about the issues. Campaigns are covered like sports, with more interest in the race than the issues. Journalists today are lazy, and the mainstream media, being cowed by the likes of Limbaugh and his crass imitators, report the safe stories. God help our election process in the future.
