Edwards stresses South Carolina roots
Democrat John Edwards, who badly needs a win in South Carolina, the state where he was born, returns to his son-of-a-mill-worker roots in a new TV ad.
The ad shows him giving an impassioned stump speech in which he declares, "I'm not running for president because I read something in a book. I'm not running for president because some political consultant told me what I'm supposed to say. I'm running for president because of 54 years of my life, I have believed to my soul that the men and women who worked in that mill with my father were worth every bit as much as the man that owned that mill."
He was born in Seneca, S.C., and grew up there and in another small town, Robbins, N.C.
Today, Edwards started a three-day "Bringing it Home" bus tour across South Carolina after drawing enthusiastic crowds earlier this week in Columbia and Clemson. He is focusing on the state, which holds its Democratic primary on Jan. 26.
He won the primary in 2004, but is running a distant third in the latest polls behind Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, who have eclipsed him in the campaign overall and are turning it into a two-person race.

Edwards SHOULD BE the nominee and the next president.
The corporations should not be able to determine who becomes the next president.
"Clinton and Barack Obama, who have eclipsed him in the campaign overall and are turning it into a two-person race. " No, I believe that it is the news media which has always wanted it to be a two person race. Much less messy then reality. Who wants 7 people running and expressing opinions. What a bad and messy script. Two people who could be the "first" is so much more dramatic and since news departments are now considered profit centers for the corporations who own them, what more could we expect than a sort of plitical American Idol. Oh, well, maybe it really is up to us .
I can honestly say that the John Edwards campaign, and his inspiration to join One Corps, has made many of us better people, better citizens, and better advocates of change for a better, more compassionate America. He has had the courage to put the economy back on the table, to remind us that race and class still matter in this country (and that in order to move beyond the disparities that flow from the historical conditions of both, we must first confront our demons and deal with them, not pretend "race" or "class" go away with a simple wave of the hand). John and Elizabeth Edwards, as part of a candidacy of change, rather than as another in a series of self-appointed messianic figures who promise to unite rather than to divide us, have also reminded us about the realities of history: that real change takes time, that historical amnesia only leads to disaster (particularly for the least well off among us), and that Americans are (or should be) better than this, that Americans can and should be patriotic about something other than war, should be focused on things other than political wrangling. John Edwards has made this campaign not about him, but rather about us, where the focus should remain. Because he has called upon all Americans to do what's right and just, he continues to have our support here in Brooklyn, where many of us look forward to Super Tuesday. Thank you, John and Elizabeth Edwards, for pointing the spot-light on the changes we so desperately need in this country and abroad. Let's all prove that we're better than what the media feeds us, by seeing in the Edwards platform those interconnected links, between the economy, the environment, health care, other social services, and yes, global peace.
I am an African American female, not that it matters with what I'm about to say. Jargon is not going to win the White House. From Obama all I see is superficial burbs. 99% of his message IS what Clinton has previously said at one point or another. However, he doesn't have the depth or knowledge that is necessary to address the issues he has been talking about, because the issues are not his own. It sounds good, but against any republican he will not win the presidency. Now, Hillary Clinton has in depth knowledge of the issues. When push comes to shove and Obama is pressed to outline his plans in a meeting with a savvy audience and a media that will eat him alive if he goes toe to toe with any republican, he will be found to lack real knowledge of what America needs. Only Hillary Clinton can provide the leadership America needs. She is the only person that is able to stand up against any republican and win the presidency. Like it or not, in this presidential election, it will not be won based on the best speeches, but who is perceived to be able to lead this nation to a strong dollar, out of Iraq, and towards affordable health care, and simultaneously not drown this nation in high interest rates or have astronomical tax increases on the middle class. Hillary Clinton is able to do these things, not just talk the talk, she can walk the walk and win against a republicans. My question is, WHEN DID HAVING EXPERIENCE BECOME A BAD WORD??? If we look at Obama's track record of experience, there isn't much to use as justification for presidency. Some say it can't get any worse than this administration, but I'd rather not take the risk and see. Just because he is new to Washington, doesn't mean he's good for Washington or the nation. National experience is a good thing. Although I am African American, I don't want this nation to choose a man just because he speaks well, even if he black, but has no substance. I don't want this nation to choose a woman, just because we feel its time. I want this nation to choose a president because he or she, black man or white woman is best for this country. Therefore, because of my love of this country I have decided to not be quiet and let Obama's charade continue. Lets get back to what is right for this country...Hillary Clinton is the ONLY candidate capable of leading this country back to prosperity.
I agree. If people would just listen to this guy instead of listening to some news guy it would be different. News guys have too much say-so if you ask me.
