Excited about Iowa, Romney looks ahead to N.H.

BETTENDORF, Iowa -- Mitt Romney was closing out his campaign in Iowa today, but his mind was clearly on New Hampshire.

Even as he offered paeans to the voters of Iowa and the importance of their caucus on Thursday, he laced into his chief rival in New Hampshire, Senator John McCain of Arizona.

"With regards to Senator McCain, I think he was just wrong to vote against the Bush tax cuts twice," Romney said at a press conference at Bettendorf Middle School, unprompted by a question from the press. "He continues to defend that vote. He continues to believe it was the right thing to vote no on the Bush tax cuts, despite the fact that the Bush tax cuts helped working families, helped people meet their obligations. It also helped rebuild our economy in a time we'd gone into an economic tailspin."

He also criticized McCain for supporting a failed plan last summer that would have allowed illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship.

"He was the final champion of that last bill that came before the Senate that would have said to every illegal alien in this country, 'You get to stay here forever,' " Romney said, to scattered boos from a few supporters assembled for the press conference. "In my opinion, that's a wrong course."

Romney was making the first stop of a multi-county airplane tour of Iowa today -- part of his attempt to generate momentum before the caucuses and cover media markets across Iowa. Romney said he was excited for Thursday's caucuses.

"It's like Christmas morning and you want to run down and open the present and see what you got and hope it's not a lump of coal," Romney said. "I can't wait for tomorrow at 7:30, as we'll begin to get some early reports."

He also took a jab at his chief rival in Iowa, Mike Huckabee, for flying to Los Angeles today to appear on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.

"I think Mike is more concerned about the caucus in Los Angeles," he said.

  1. Mike Huckabee has to go on television to finance his campaign. He has no money because he has not been able to build a team substantial enough to help him. His ten years as Govenor did not prepare him for this major league experience. He needs the gift of free publicity. He is use to getting gifts. He got his anti ads out free by "not showing them to the news media" and now they are freely up on U-tube. He is learning the ropes as he goes along. His support from evangelicals is not even earned. That voting block even feel into his lap free of anyting he did personally. In November he was picked because he was "one of use". Records, ideas, solutions, experience, or substance were not what brought Huckabee to the lead in Iowa. In my opininon he is there as a puppet for the evangelical right caucus. If Fred Thompson had come into the race as expected, Huckabee would be history right now.

  1. Romney is nauseating. His money comes from the same people running the country right now, the folks who smeared John McCain in South Carolina.

He has shown that he has no views, unless they reflect what he thinks the voters want to hear.

If Romney is such a great thinker on immigration, where is his plan? He obviously realizes that if he were to enact a plan to stop all of this, it would require him to spend more money than our national defense expenditures. It would also mean higher prices to his beloved painters and landscapers.

  1. Peter - Romney's plan is to have an ID card that gets scanned by a potential employer. If there is no record of the illegal alien in the system as a tax payer/visiting worker, then that employer cannot hire lest they face harsh financial penalties.

Why do illegals come here? To get jobs. Why don't they register to be citizens? So they don't have to pay taxes. Of course there are exceptions, and yes some do pay taxes. But Romney's plan is the only viable one. Force illegals/guest workers to at least pay taxes while they are here working.

In regards to the landscaping comment - I'm sure you arent checking on the immigration status of the wait staff at the restaurants you frequent. The fact that a company Romney chose to take care of his property uses illegals is not the fault of the consumer, and the idea that it should be is a dangerous one.

  1. Here is the Huckabee negative ad on Romney, http://cameron.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/01/01/exclusive-hucks-cxlld-attack-ad/ if you ask me it’s right on the money and I think he should have aired it and I’m not a Huckabee supporter. I work in Mass and live in NH, and I’m an “anybody but Romney” supporter with a “Romney is Wrong” bumper sicker. So my game plan is to go with McCain to put the biggest hurt on Romney in NH and then I’ll hope for Rudy or McCain get the nomination. Romney scares the hell out of me because he looks so plane vanilla to the heartland; thank god Huckabee is taking those votes from Romney now. Romney is the most callous, self absorbed calculating empty suit I ever met, yes I did say met and not on the campaign trail. Mitt is trying hard to fulfill is father’s failed presidential legacy just like “W” did, people of entitlement really don’t get it, people just don’t like them.

  1. Well said Peter. The most damning critique of Romney came from Romney himself, that he is "fundamentally data-driven". Data is invaluable when it's constructively used to solve problems, no question, but when your fundamental concern is polling data and you marry that with lack of a political core, that's another matter entirely. Data shows you need to be pro-choice to be a senator/governor in a very blue state? Then pro-choice it is. Need to be pro-life to outflank early red states from the right? Now it's pro-life. John McCain will at least confront hard problems with integrity and honesty. Given the events of the last 7 years those are qualities that even those on the right wish we'd had in the White House. Romney will just be more of the same.

  1. Romney's Immigration Plan is akin to the military don't ask don't tell plan. After the second incident he throws his wife Ann and one of his nit wit sons under the bus for not asking or following up on his personal immigration policy problem. As the good vulture (as intended) capitalist that he is Mitt has learned all about data driven decisions, unfortunately for Mitt it was garbage data in and garbage out. Now if this happened to a regular guy I wouldn't have a problem with it but if you're running for president on a supposedly strong immigration policy then you have to walk the talk. Mitt apparently must gobble because he walked liked a turkey on this issue. As the old saying goes, "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me". I for one don't want another entitlement fool in the Whitehouse

  1. It is time for us to elect a President that does not try to buy the office and that talks off of talking points or based on focus groups. Romney is a guy that is willing to say that he is everything to everone, but his record does not prove that case. He has flip-flopped more than Senator Kerry! I find it amazing that some Republicans jab McCain for trying to get things done by working with Democrats. These are the same Republicans that complain about gridlock in Washington. We need a "mainstream" candidate for President and Mitt has taken himself too far to the right. America's best choice is John McCain! He is a man of honor and integrity. He is not afraid to buck his party line and he has the experience to lead us during these perilous times. I don't agree with all of his positions, but at least I know where he stands on the issues that face this nation. I cannot say the same about Mitt Romney due to him playing the role of Political Chameleon.

  1. By emphasizing his qualification for office as a “Christian leader,” the Huckabee campaign, however, has implicitly, and some of his supporters have explicitly, promoted a religious test for office. This threatens to tear this religious coalition apart. And if evangelical Christians legitimize a religious test for public office, they will pay the heaviest price. The liberal elites have long sought to drive people of faith from the public square. They view Mormons as a curiosity, like Christians on steroids, but they loath and fear evangelicals. If a religious test is legitimate for public office, then the Democrats will drive evangelicals out of our democracy.

So will the Huckabee campaign be the stake in the heart of the Reagan coalition? It is apparent that the Democrat National Committee hopes so, as Huckabee has largely escaped their criticism. Mitt Romney, however, has been the focal point of their attacks. That is because he is a full-spectrum conservative who will reunite the Reagan coalition. This is the Republican voter’s choice, are we to unite together, or will some of us simply “go by the wayside?”

  1. Mitt Romney, a "full-spectrum conservative"? Give me a break! The only thing Mitt Romney is "full-spectrum" on is the diversity of opinions he has espoused over the years on every major issue from abortion to gay marriage to gun control and taxes-- err, "fees"! The Democrats would have a field day with this guy using Karl Rove's very own "How to Beat John Kerry" play book!

Reagan won by putting America first and by extolling a positive vision for the future that made us proud of our country. That vision of America, unfortunately, isn't offered by any of the current candidates, Democrat or Republican.
