Exit poll favors Romney's prospects
Early exit polling from Michigan appears to bode well for Mitt Romney and ill for John McCain.
McCain won the Republican primary in 2000, thanks largely to support from independents and Democrats who crossed over.
But while independents made up 35 percent of primary voters in 2000, they only comprised about 25 percent of voters today, according to the exit poll, conducted by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International for The Associated Press and television networks.
While Republicans made up less than half of primary voters in 2000, two-thirds of GOP primary voters surveyed today said they were registered Republicans, according to the exit poll.
The early exit polls showed Romney leading among Republicans and McCain among independents.
Early reports also suggested low turnout, in part because there was no real contest on the Democratic side. That would also appear to favor Romney.
Not surprisingly, the exit poll showed that the economy is by far the most important issue in Michigan, which is suffering from the nation's highest unemployment rate, 7.4 percent in November. McCain, Romney, and Mike Huckabee, the three leading Republicans in the polls, all focused on jobs during the last days of the campaign.

This is not totally conclusive, though. One pro-Romney poll was estimating that GOP voters would comprise a whopping 80% of the electorate, and not 65% as the polls shows. John McCain isn't dead yet!
He sure looks like it though
GOOD! The higher the number of republican's the worse for McCain. If the voters are 80% republican... Romney has it made. Go Mitt!
The media called him dead after Iowa... then after New Hampshire... and now Mitt may take Michigan. That's possibly two wins for Romney and two second place finishes. That's HUGELY successful in my book.
dead ??? and some two faced liar like romney elected??? hahahahaha
Romney leads among voters who care about the economy as the number one issue by a margin of 2 to 1.
It's difficult for McCain to win when the issue is anything remotely related to the economy.
McCain is a good man, albeit a rather old man -- he'd be the oldest US pres. in history on taking office, and Mitt would be best for the economy. McCain never was a true Republican -- only when it suited his political prospects.
Steve,
For the sake of the Country lets hope this is correct. As an Arizonan, we respect McCain as a patriot, but he would be a good President...
Sorry McCain, come home to Golf.
Go Mitt Romney.
What's happening in America? I am confident there are two things I will not trust the public schools to teach my children, 1. Sex Education 2. Government/Economics.
It scares me that so many citizens have very little understanding of how the government and economy work. I'm worried that the basic principles of conservatism are only secondary to surface issues and cliche put-downs.
Here's an insightful article for voters who believe in principles....

"Daily Kos Democrats" are voting for Romney to mess up the Republicans. Not only will a Mitt "gold medal" keep him (and his money and mudslinging tendencies) in the race but will be a major blow to Michigan's 2000 winner, John McCain, who desparately needs some momentum and is ultimately the toughest draw for either Clinton or Obama (IMO). The more the GOP contenders beat themselves up (and spend all their money) in the primary, the better for the Democratic nominee in the general election. Check out the YouTube clip "Democrats for Romney" - it's funny.
Yes he is and good riddance. He is to old and cantankerous and his views are way too liberal.
Willard Romney is a walking, talking self promotion...empty and hollow. He doesn't miss a photo op, either. I'm from Massaachusetts, that's all he did here. Listen to him...all the usual political promises and rhetoric. He's already said he's not going to win Mass. THAT should tell you something.
Mitt Romney scored a home run on Hannity today. He actually gave specific ways in which he could turn the auto industry around. While naysayers like McCain and his cronies just bemoan that jobs have gone overseas (never mind are taken by the illegal aliens he would like to give amnesty), Romney sees that the government has caused a lot of grief for the auto and other domestic industries and that something can be done about it.
I remember being in Utah when the scandals hit regarding the Olympics. There was a lot of hand wringing then and most said it would never come off. Enter Mitt Romney. He has a way of analyzing carefully, planning carefully and executing the plan that brought around the Olympics, Bain, Staples and many other things that needed to be turned completely on their heels to set them right.
GO MITT!!! We are cheering for you out here in Seattle!!!!!!!
jaco lerner...I'm always swayed by below-the-belt personal attacks! your posting was so awe-inspiring!
"Romney leads among voters who care about the economy as the number one issue by a margin of 2 to 1."
He also leads among voters who are too dumb to look past his facade and into his record
Romney is by far the best candidate in the field. He is actually our only hope for a conservative that understands business, jobs, and government. He is also a fine man and role model.

Exit polls show very little democratic turnout. This is great info. Let's see what kind of negative Romney spin the media and the anti-Romneys can come up with when Romney pulls out a decisive 7-9% victory.
I think Romney will take 'Big Mo' going into South Carolina.
Go Romney!!

Lighten up boys and girls. It is likely Mitt will win his "home state' by a few points, so what? New Hamsphire was the big one and McCain will win South Carolina, Florida, and most of the Feb 5th states.
After Michigan Mitt has NO prospects of winning a single state. If McCain has some competition it will come from Huckabee, but that will be minimal. Rudy and Fred have collapsed and McCain has picked up all of their supporters. Also look for Fred to endorse McCain after South Carolina, Rudy will endorse McCain after Florida.
It's nice that Mitt wins one, but this is it for him.
MAC IS BACK
MITTENS! MITTENS! MITTENS! MITTENS! MITTENS!!!!
I certainly hope ol' Huckleberry Hound doesn't do well in today'aszs primary. We don't need a man who doesn't believe in evolution, and who believes that a woman should submit herself to her husband, whatever that means, in the running for the nomination-although I'm sure the Dems would relish that prospect. I am happy to say that we will soon be able to kiss the pot-smoker's friend, Ron Paul, goodbye. Go McCain!
I'm struggling to understand why anyone would NOT want Mitt Romney for President. (1.) If our government were run more sensibly, like a business (of which Romney has the most experience), we'd be in much better fiscal shape. (2.) He's strong on illegal immigration and for all the right reasons. What don't people understand about the term "illegal". (3) He understands Islamic Fundamentalist Jihadists and their mission....and I for one like someone "watching my 6", (4) free healthcare AIN'T FREE!!!! Didn't your Dad ever tell you "there's no free lunch"??? And if there is...I'm thinking I'm paying for someone else's! and finally...maybe not as important as the issues....but geez...could he be any MORE "PRESIDENTIAL" AS THE TERM GOES???!
GO MITT!!!!!! I"m standing with you as long as YOU'RE standing!!
McCain is NOT the toughest candidate against Obama or Clinton - THAT is why the MSM is propping McCain and Huckabee up (because they feel [know] that EITHER Obama or Clinton can easily beat EITHER McCain or Huckabee.
That's why they DESPARATELY want "anyone" but Romney or Giuliani.
Mitt should have won his home state without even contending very hard. He is not electable nationally. He could not win his next door state of New Hampshire. He is leading in delegates for now. If eventually value voter Huckabee is elminated, his support will not go to Romney but to McCain or Thompson.
Wyoming was strongly behind Mitt, showing he can win in the West. A victory tonight in Michigan, tied to two strong second place finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire will tilt the nomination in his favor! Don't forget, folks, the delegates are apportioned among the vote-getters. Mitt's ahead now in delegate count and cannot fall behind McCain or Huckabee, regardless of how Michigan votes.
Great--Romney had a three legged stool approach to winning this race. Unfortunately, Huckabee wacked one leg and McCain the other. Then the people of Wyoming propped the stool with a 2x4. It’s still a bit rickety but it should hold through February 5th when the Republican gets fully behind this phenomenal leader.

Joan,
I would agree with you. Among today's politicians, the choices are 1) large government with balanced budget (Clinton) or 2) large government with unbalanced bush(George W.). Small government principles have less sway. They simply do not attract voters.
In today's time, there is no reason for "small government." We know now that free markets and spend-friendly consumers make our economy grow. Economists have largely figured out how to keep growth rate stable and avoid inflation. Tthe President's role is minimal. If you accept that (which I am sure you don't), why waste your efforts cutting programs as a President? Lowering taxes makes sense, but removing programs only angers people without providing much good in return.
Romney is certainly the weakest candidate against Obama and Clinton. 60% of voters already said they will never vote for him. I can tell you that as a lifelong active republican voters, who pay my annual RNC membership, volunteer calling potential.... If Romney is the GOP candidate, I will vote Democrat this year.
Let's finish MIchigan and roll into Nevada!!!
And to all you McCain fans who think Romney doesn't have a shot in another state, may I introduce you to McCain's neighbor in Nevada. Practically a border state, my guess is that they're a bit tired of illegal immigration.
44% Catholic, 12% Mormon.
The Huckster will not fair well. And Romney has done quite well with Catholics.
But this isn't over until it's called....
Jonnie Fox: Here's one reason why I'd never vote for Romney again (I did for MA gov.). He is the supreme opportunist. He makes John Kerry appear committed to his principles. He's changed so many of his positions since he ran for gov. 5 years ago I wonder how he can keep his positions straight. Sad thing is, if he ran on who he used to be....moderate socially, conservative fiscally, competent business exec.....he'd likely win the nomination in a waltz. Sad to see a bright guy outsmart himself by running against his true principles for political expediency.
I hope Romney wins, only because McCain, the Republican RINO needs to be stopped. At this point, any of the Republican so-called front runners will be beaten like a drum by any Democrat nominee. Lyndon Johnson made me a Barry Goldwater Republican. Romney or McCain may make me a Libertarian!
A George W. Bush, "steering committee" member, who regrets it, but nobody else was running.
Jonnie Fox,
What's wrong with everyone chipping in to pay for healthcare? It'll be a heackuv a lot cheaper than if we pay for it individually. In fact, do you know how the Emergency Room works? You are already paying for the uninsured. Why not make it official?
The government is not a business, why should it be run like one?
Actually, Mike Corcoran, New Hapshire wasn't the "big one". It only had 24 delegates at stake while Michigan has 30. Don't be fooled by what the media tries to tell you. So, I'm sorry, you're wrong.
Frankly, I'm more interested in who will win the general election in November, than who might squeeze out a primary win in one state or another.... McCain? He's a decent man, no doubt, but his day came - and went - years ago. Mitt's just plain out of touch (wish it were so that he'd bring back the days when Detroit was #1, but folks, it isn't going to happen). Even if they have their supporters in one state or another along the way, does anyone really think that a majority of Americans would support either one (or Rudy or Fred, for that matter) in a general election? Unlikely....
Romney knows nothing about foreign policy, so do you really want him "watching your 6"? He also is not great at running a government like a business, nor is he good at promoting economic growth. SEE Record as Mass Governor. He is also the biggest flip-flopper since John Kerry.
go mitt, this sucks the $$ out of McCain, and a phoney baloney like Mitt makes
Hillary look like a real person and Obama would crush Mr Milk and Cookies.
If Mitt wins, it will be entertaining to see how the MSM spins it. They've ignored his lead in the delegate count, his lead in total Republican votes, his strong second place finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire, and his decisive win in Wyoming. At the same time McCain's 5-percent win over Romney in New Hampshire was characterized as a blow-out. If Mitt wins I'm sure we'll be reading about how he only did better than McCain due to the weather, or some other irrelevant variable, and the MSM will call it a weak victory. But if McCain wins, be ready for declarations of a mandate, a landslide, and they'll be ready to call the national election results (even though this will be just the 4th of 50 states) and schedule the coronation.
Yes, Romney's strong on illegal immigration. He wants to keep a close eye on them by having them work on his lawn.
Romney is what our country needs. One with experience, leadership, and morals. Two golds and silvers puts him solidly in 1st place- with delegates and popular vote. We support you overseas. Mitt is the man!
YOU ANTI-mitt losers....C'mon get a life. Mitt is here for the long haul...He is destined to save the Republican party....Coureous, intelligent, respectful of others...classy in speaking, articulate in demeanor, PRO-life (yes, he saw the light like Ronald Reagan)....an outsider from the failed Washington policies....I could go on and on....Family man....handsome....We need a Supreme cour t that will reverse the travesty of Roe V. Wade.
Mitt will restore the Right to Life to the unborn...and save women from heartrendering and devastated lives.
You live in a fantasy world to say Mitt is out! He has a 50-state strategy...He isnt like some candidates I know...He values each state...and thats why he always intended to run to the very end....Bravo, Mitt....I want to work in your campaign.
sure are a lot of romney staffers on here. all those GO MITT! exclamation's stink of his complete phoniness
did nothing for this state. mitt's #1 concern is mitt. that said, it's fun to see another mass flip-flopper getting national attention.
Horse hockey!
Let's see how the voters vote. Just because Romney's father was in the auto industry does not qualify him to be an expert. That is akin to Ms. Clinton claiming to have 35 years solid experience. The only elected position she has held has been as the carpetbagger Senator from NY.
If Michiganders actually believe Romney's empty promises to effectively bail out the auto industry then God help them. The US auto industry was too slow off the mark to realize that consumers read the oil market better than they. McCain's approach, to become realistic and retrain the workforce and redirect to newer technologies is the correct approach, in my humble opinion.
It will be a close race, with Michiganders probably favoring the favorite son, but I expect that McCain will show well, and Huckabee may surprise all.
Ronmney would put his grandmother up for bid on Ebay at this stage to win Michigan. What a phony.
mccain is the only one who can win the general......i dont understand republicans who vote for romney knowing that he has no shot of beating clinton or obama....do i agree with mccain on everything? no of course not......but at least you know where he stands..he is honest and takes positions.......he wants to cut spending and limit gov't which is very conservative, while also making the bush tax cuts permanent......his immigration plan (provided the border is secured) is the only plan that is feasible. (i would love to hear romney explain how he plans to round up 11 million people and ship them back their countries, typical politics where romney says something that in theory would be good, but has no plausible way of happening and the mindless followers applaud) mccain is the better candidate, person, judge, and the right person for the job, however if you feel that romney is that person you should still vote for mccain because he is our only shot at winning....a vote for romney is essentially a vote for clinton...
Notice how the Socialist/Liberal/Democrats can only add ONE thing to a political conversation...specifically, NAME CALLING! No wonder they always depend on big daddy government to take care of them.
G O M I T T ! !
MITT ROMNEY IS THE BEST.....MOST INTELLIGENT, PRESIDENTIAL, COURTEOUS....RELIGIOUS, BUT DOESNT FLAUNT IT LIKE YOU KNOW WHO....IS PRO-LIFE AND WILL, LIKE LINCOLN, RESOLVE THE DASTARDLY ROE V. WADE DECISION....hE WILL RESTORE THE RIGHT TO LIFE TO THE UNBORN.....
mccain is the only one who can win the general......i dont understand republicans who vote for romney knowing that he has no shot of beating clinton or obama....do i agree with mccain on everything? no of course not......but at least you know where he stands..he is honest and takes positions.......he wants to cut spending and limit gov't which is very conservative, while also making the bush tax cuts permanent......his immigration plan (provided the border is secured) is the only plan that is feasible. There were 2 winners tonight! Mitt and Rudy-Rudy's strategy couldn't be working any better! No clear favorite-Mccain loses Michigan-Rudy leads in New Jersey,New York, and California. If Rudy wins Florida,it's lights out.
McAmnesty can't win in states where Dems and Independents can't cross over to vote for him and mess up the process. The "red states" haven't voted yet, look for the real conservatives to give Senator McAmnesty and old Huckleberry hound dog dingleberry the boot. Romney will run the table once the conservatives get to vote. Fred has a chance in S Carolina......Best of all outcomes : Romney/Thompson 08!!
Be careful Dems what you wish for, voting for Mitt in the Michigan primary
might just put him in the White House.
Go Mitt

Go Mitt
I was getting a little worried that the Republicans had figured out Mitt is unelectable but these posts and Michigan are reviving my hope. Please, GOP, please nominate Mitt Romney as your candidate for president. The only danger is that the DNC overloads considering which of his many vulnerabilities to exploit, while the savagely intolerant Christian right stays home.
C'mon Mitt! Give us a candidacy that guarantees a Democratic landslide!
1) Judging current U.S. output of automobiles by the Big 3, with the latest generation of factories shows the industry has another 75% employees to cut in the next 10 years. We've dropped 200,000 in the last few years, got another 600,000 or so to go.
That's why the UAW, and the Democratic party, was desperate to get it's mitts on another source of money other then union membership dues. Hmmm, management fees on the Retiree Healthcare Trust will do nicely!
The value of U.S. manufacturing output has grown by 15% in real dollars (adjusted for inflation) while manufacturing employment has decreased by 1/3rd.
Those jobs are gone and they're not coming back. In fact, if that trend continues we would need -- starting today -- to see real growth in manufacturing output of 4 to 5% per year just to maintain the current levels of manufacturing employment.
We have an opportunity to achieve part of that by shifting from importing oil outside of North America and redirecting that into investments in Nuclear, Geothermal, and upgraded electrical transmission and distribution grids. And there are other similiar policies that could help -- but manufacturing will continue to become more efficient, and that means jobs will be lost.
It's not China folks -- it's Computers that have laid off Americans.
2) Anyone who believes Mitt Romney is a conservative -- in any sense of the term from Goldwater to Christian Coalition -- is out of touch with reality.
You do realize you're talking Mitt Romney who proudly supported Universal Healthcare, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, and grew the Taxachussets budget by 6.5% annually? I don't see government, social, or fiscal conservatism in the history of Mitt Romney, just going along with the flow and the occasional show boating like, "No human cloning!"
Doesn't mean Mitt's not necessarily the best candidate -- all of the big 4 today have significant flaws. Heck, it would be tough to pick and choose between all 4 and create a candidate who would energize the Republicans today.
It is to say, however, that McCain's record is as or more conservative then that of Romeny, Giulliani, or Huckabee when you look at their histories of public service -- you can not call any of them either flaming liberals or stalwart conservatives.
If it wasn't for Mitt Romney, no one would've campaigned in Michigan. All other things aside, I believe that Romney truly cares for the state of Michigan because if he didn't, why would he waste his time on a state with only half the delegates? McCain is too smug for me and I don't agree with most of his policies.
I believe you take huckabee out of the race and it becomes a land slide for Mitt.
Plan and simple 4 contests Romney has 2 Golds and 2 Silvers. Notice the two golds came in states and places where one could not spend a month campaining and attacking him.
What does Huck have now a gold a no show in Wyoming, and a bronze in NH.
McCain a Bronze like Huck a no Show in Wyoming and a Win in NH.
I would say Romney has the best shot and it will only get better as time goes on.
The assumption that government should be run like a business is a flawed one. In some ways, it should be. It should try to be as lean and efficient as possible, to avoid waste and corruption, and assess the needs of those it seeks to serve so it can meet those needs effectively.
But in many other ways, a government is not a business because a nation is not a business. It is, in some ways, more like a family. Citizens, like children and siblings, cannot be fired. If families ran entirely like businesses, wouldn't it make sense simply to "downsize" "unproductive" kids? Wouldn't marriages that aren't financially advantageous be foolish?
The market is a wonderful thing, but it isn't magic. Penicillin is a wonderful drug, but there are lots of things not to take it for. Selling one ideology for all problems is snake oil. I don't know if Romney the businessman would necessarily be a great president, but aren't we winding down the first, vaunted MBA presidency? I don't think it's turned out very well, though I'll understand if most of you disagree.
One final word on who the Dems want to face? I'm a Democrat, and am far more worried about John McCain than I am Mitt Romney. I'm not necessarily representative, but I think the logic makes sense. Given the registration edge the Democrats have and the fact that either McCain or Romney will alienate a key Republican constituency (at least one), only a candidate who can appeal to independents can win. I agree with the poster who suggests that Romney could have been that guy before he went and changed most of his beliefs, but I don't think he is now.
Of course, if my party goes and nominates Hillary Clinton, all bets are off. If anything can unify you folks, it's the Clintons!
I really do hope Mitt Romney wins this. He is right on target with what Michigan needs. McCain is so wrong and all the laws he supported .. especially the amnesty thing are wrong. He thinks most everyone is concerned with Iraq .. well no, we are concerned with employment .. or lack of it. Huckabee needs to Acsend to the heavens, never to be heard from again.
GO MITT!!
It's SO SIMPLE. McPain is a RHINO. Mitt is NOT
Why would any conservative vote for a Dem. in most respects, except the war on Terror?
Huckabee is the only true classy American in the race with a chance at beating teh commie democrats in the general election!
Mike Huckabee for President 2008!

Will the state of Nevada have an issue with the population of illegal aliens voting? According to a official report, all an individual has to do to caste a vote is to sign an affidavit of being a citizen. When you break the sovereign laws of the United States, what makes us think their will not violate our voting laws. Tell me who is going to authenticate this travesty of our Constitutional right, if foreign nationals wish to transgress our voting laws? Certainly not the Casino's or Catering organizations, who enjoy cheap labor? With Nevada having a huge showing of illegal foreign nationals, it will be interesting to see the political impact. This 2008 election will have a massive adverse effect on the rights and privileges of true Americans. According to an estimate of the Pew Hispanic Center, in 2005 there were an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 illegal aliens living in Nevada This estimate ranks 15th among illegal alien populations in the United States for the PEW estimate. FAIR estimates in 2004 that the taxpayers of Nevada spent $321.1 million per year on illegal aliens and their children in public schools.
I would rather lose with dignity in the general elections than to vote for McCain who has been a RINO since I can remember. Amnesty was my final straw.
A McCain Hater's Case for McCain
Put me in the camp of those who have reluctantly come to believe that McCain is the candidate to support in the Republican primary. If I could annoint a candidate, it would be The Fred. I actually care passionately about immigration and free speech, and I really didn't think I could forgive McCain for his positions on those issues, but here is my reasoning:
1) McCain-Feingold: while it seems like it should be unconstitutional, in practice, it has proven to be pretty easy to work around. Even a poorly financed candidate like Huckabee has been able to get his message out.
2) Immigration: for all his faults, I think McCain will be a man of his word in this respect: he has agreed to "certifying" that the border is secure. This is a bigger concession than most seem willing to credit him for. It moves the goalpost substantially in favor of the enforcement side of the equation, an on an issue that has already proven to be susceptible to grass roots activism. To the extent he has a defining principle, it would be keeping his word. I think we can hold his straight talking feet to the fire on this promise.
3) Gang of 14: Mehhh, seems like, if not an I-told-you-so moment, then at least the the minority has preserved some rights against the emerging Democratic majority that Republicans might need sooner than they thought possible at the time of the deal.
4) Judges: I think any replacements he picked for Stevens or Ginsberg would move the court to the right. Exactly how far right is hard to say. I'd predict an O'Connor, not a Thomas, but that is still an improvement over a Justice Bill Clinton. While there is no predicting court changes, it seems like there is a good chance he will be a net plus.
5) National Security: He is one of a few whom I could see sitting down across a table from Vlad Putin and not be worried for our side. Sadly, Mitt and Huck fail this test in my book (I could see Rudy and Fred here as well, but no others). I also think that he is just crazy enough that the Chinese would think twice before messing with our computer systems.
6) Spending: He has the best small government street cred by far. At this point, I rate lower spending as a higher priority than lower taxes.
7) Coattails: Because of #6, I think he is best situated to nationalize the House elections. By recruiting and campaigning for smaller government Republicans, he could re-brand the party like nobody since Gingrich.
8) The half-a-loaf theory: Our search should not be for the purest embodiment of our ideals, but for the person most likely to get the majority of our agenda accomplished. McCain is in the best position to win if nominated, and that has to be factored into anyone's thinking.
9) Finally, lets face it, the country needs some healing. Realistically, only McCain or Obama have a hope of doing this, since both transcend their party to a degree. Of the two, I'd much prefer McCain.
I also think that the worst outcome is for McCain to win but feel that he owes conservatives nothing. Hopefully, if he starts to pull out to an insurmountable lead, conservatives can rally to the flag for the general election.
Michigan's economy is slow.
Governor Granholme came to power touting new leadership to attract business to Michigan. A B-list actor was hired to carry the word that Michigan was friendly to business. A business leader was presented who extolled the value of Michigan as a home for business. Still, Michigan's economy is slow. I am writing from Texas. Texas' economy is not slow. The reason I see for Michigan's economy to be slow is structural. I said "reason". There are many differences between Texas and Michigan, but there is one reason for Michigan to have slow business.
Unions.
I like Mitt also, he is my second choice for Pres. My first choice would be Giuliani. I believe he is the man for this time. I am anti-abortion and am aware of Giuliani's position on that. My answer to his being less than adamantly against abortion is to site what he said he would do, to make sure that strict constructionist judges would be nominated for judgeship positions under his leadership. That is all any President can do, no president can overturn any constitutional issues on his own, which it seems people wrongly think a president can. Giuliani is one tough cookie and won't let our enemies here and abroad push him around. He isn't as squeaky clean as Mitt, but he is tougher.
If Romney wins, that is GREAT for Rudy Giuliani. Keeps the field muddled enough. Rudy!!
Yes, because Romney created SO MANY jobs in Massachusetts will all of those business skills he touts. Same line of bull he fed Massachusetts when he ran for Governor is being fed to the people of Michigan. Shame on them if they are stupid enough to believe Willard the Rat Romney
Mitt will try to be all things to all people and he'll go down in flames... He'll be the Republican Mike Dukakis.
Good Lord.
The only place Mitt Romney can win in the general election is the heavily Mormonized West. I personally know more Republicans than not that will stay home on Election Day if he is the nominee.
Two big reasons: 1.) Mitt Romney is the John Kerry of the Republican presidential race; his positions on issues fundamental to the conservative base have changed more quickly and more often than Paris Hilton in fromt of a handicam. For this he would be crucified and abandoned by most wary and intelligent voters. 2.) He is insincere and negative. Any moron who isn't immediately swayed by the "Presidentiality Factor" accomplished by his "brylcreem-to-shoeshine conservative captain of industry" persona will take a second look at him and deduce him as a fraud. He has outspent all other candidates combined in the primary season and accomplished a net gain of 2-3% (to 12.5%) in the national polls.
He would be absolutely nowhere without his checkbook.
Sorry, Gordon B. Hinckley, you'll have to wait a little longer to capitalize on our highest elected office.
I'm a registered Republican and I am fairly tired of the big business friendly ways of GOP. After Haliburton and Blackwater I am beginning to rethink my position on how far we should privatize our government. Big corporate America has to shoulder a significant amount of blame for our current economy woes. In their chase for maximizing profit, they out source jobs, invent newer and riskier financial derivatives, combined with lax regulation and we have a poorer middle class saddled with the burdens from the likes of Enron and the current subprime mess.
I think Mitt has a very impressive business record, but I cannot support someone like Mitt Romney with his venture capitalistic attitude to be our next president. He was a successful CEO but what has he done for the American people as a whole, other than the selective few shareholders who profited. What social programs has he started? What has he done for the disadvantaged Americans? He has spent millions to promote himself, but what has he given to America?
The real litmus test for a potential president is to take away the spot lights, the publicity and the fame and ask what will Mitt Romney do for America? Unfortunately other than tangential benefits, Americans didn't benefit that much from Mitt Romney's acute business acumen.
THE ANTI BUSH VOTES DOOMS MCCAIN AND THE ENTIRE GOP. ROMENY IS THERE ONLY CHANCE.
Gotta love the caption: "Mitt Romney received good news for his struggling campaign"
Struggling? He has the most delegates. And just wait for the votes from the states where only Republicans can vote in their own primary. How would these Marxists (isn't that what they call journalists nowadays?) characterize the others (i.e. the non-Republican Republicans)? Hmmm...
Romney is the only competitive true conservative at the front of the pack... Go Mitt!
These results are more of a testiment to Mitt's father than Mitt himself. He should of worked the entire field by 10-15% points. He outspent everyone 2-1 and his father was probably Michigan's best governor this century. He also had 80% of the state republican establishment on his side.
If he comes out 5-7% points up, he may get a little bump, but I am not sure it will come in SC. He will probably come in 4th in SC. His focus probably should be florida trying to eliminate Giuliani.
One thing is interesting to note. If Romney wins in Michigan, he did not win as the "conservative candidate". He ran as the Buisiness candidate. I needs to stop running as someone he is not and focus on running as a president who can fix our economy.
Happy for Mitt. Now that he's found his voice, I hope he doesn't deviate from his winning message.
What's the point of being "electable" if you don't want him elected? Vote for the person you really believe in. If everyone did that, there'd be a very different field of "electable" candidates. That's why I'm voting for DR RON PAUL!!!!! No, just kidding, he's a nutcase. I think I liked it better when the "young people" didn't vote at all!
Michigan sticks it head in the sand and listen to the man who would tell any lie to win..
there could have been no iraq without McCain's support
there could have been no bush debacle if not for McCain's support
the no. 1 cause for what has gone wrong in this country in the past 8 years
is john mccain
he is an opportunist who would back anyone to gain favor with the public
the biggest myth in the us yoday is that McCain is a liberal or a rebel or an independent
if gw bush had stopped short anytime during the past 8 nightmare years McCAIN would have disappeared you know where
I love it when Conservatives refer to Democrats as Socialists and Communists and, as one poster does above, to journalists as Marxists. That kind of name-calling plays well with the Dittoheads and completely turns everyone else off--especially youth, which is registering 2-1 Democratic. Keep up the overblown rhetoric, you're helping the Democrats.
I love it that the utterly sleazy Romney stays in the race. McCain might be the GOP's best chance. He combines experience, a genuinely heroic background, and a likable personality, but the ideologues are busily playing "Nearer My God to Thee" as the Republican ship slowly goes down. Displaying the kind of integrity that has made the Conservative movement what it is today, there is a swift-boat attack on McCain in South Carolina right now.
I love it that the Republican party is destroying itself like a maddened scorpion. Bush-Cheney karma is being reaped. I know two Republican party activists, one an officeholder, who will vote for Obama over any Republican other than McCain.
Please, Republicans, keep doing what you're doing. "The permanent Republican majority" will be the stuff of hilarity on progressive websites and at Democratic meetings for years to come. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Romney is a plastic, cookie sheet stamp. There is nothing sincere or real about him. He is more fake then Bill Clinton. Why can't anyone see through this?
He reminds me a lot of McNamara during the Vietnam era. A brilliant CEO type that has absolutely no common sense.
As each year passes, it seems like we are always voting for the lesser of two evils.

This has only cemented my reason for RARELY ever posting an opinion - because most people seem compelled to "opine" on someone else's opinions!!! What's wrong with just stating your reasons for supporting a candidate and allowing all to enjoy the different reasons each of you have for doing so...instead of responding with quotation phrases like "Presidentiality Factor"??? Pleeeease....as if someone with any intelligence would really make that their priority factor any more than one should use race or gender as a factor. One likes and supports who one chooses .....why does that upset so many...so much. I stand by my support and comments regarding Mitt Romney..and in that comment, nowhere did I bash anyone else's opinion....but then..maybe some of you just feel these are the places you get to vent your frustrations.
