Florida governor endorses McCain

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 26, 2008 07:55 PM

Florida Governor Charlie Crist endorsed John McCain tonight, a major boost three days before the key Republican primary.

Crist brought McCain to the stage at an event in St. Petersburg and called him a "true American hero, a great United States senator.... I think the world of him."

"That's an endorsement," Crist, a very popular governor, said, if there were any doubt.

"I'm very honored," said McCain , who is locked in a tight race with Mitt Romney.

  1. I do not think this will be enough to best Romney, who is the best hope we have for the economy, the family, and much, much more.

In my opinion, with this endorsement Crist has betrayed his State, and if McCain wins the nomination, his country.

McCain will eat the Republican party from the inside out.

  1. Mitt Romney is a decent man but he was just a fair governor and he has been shading the truth and embellishing his resume. I couldn't believe his repose at a candidate's forum when asked what he, as president, would do in the event of an Iranian attack on a US warship. He actually said he'd consult with the White House attorneys! I sorta doubt that President Reagan would have said or done that. A leader leads. Romney just is not a leader.

McCain, with all of his flaws, is one heck of a leader.

  1. The people of Florida are waaayyyyyyyy too smart to fall for this liberal "straight talking" liar McCain. He is hated by the Republican base and only won NH and SC off of Independent votes. He fell way behind in Iowa, Nevada, and didn't even win the Ind's in Michigan!! Crist is a known moderate Republican, and the base will not be swayed by his endorsement of McCain. He's a desperate old man trying to win votes by slamming Romney with lies lies lies. But it won't work!

  1. This endorsement, along with Senator Mel Martinez's, will push John McCain over the top and give him the momentum that he needs to wrap up the nomination on Super Tuesday. I applaud Republicans for realizing that only McCain can beat a Democrat in November. Romney would tarred as a chablis-sipping, flip-flopping elitist, who is out of touch with working men and women. Romney is so transparent that he'd give the invisible man a run for his money in a game of hide and go seek.

  1. Great endorsement and a timely one.

John McCain is seriously one of the greatest politicians of our time. Sheer honest, integrity and guts.

I am waiting for the day he gets nominated and want to see the look on xenophobes like Limbaugh. Save your painkillers Rush! you might need em on that day.

  1. McCain was already leading in Florida, and this puts him over the top. It is all-over.

  1. Does anyone think that Florida Governor Crist endorses Canidate McCain without extracting some kind of deal to benefit the Governor's political future ? Certainly a V.P. Postion is in the plans for him if McCain win the Republican nomination.

  1. It was very disappointing to me and my family that you endorsed McCain. You really should have stayed neutral. John McCain might very well be a hereo but he is certainly not presidential material. Actually, I feel sorry for him now. You have damaged your political career by taking this move, and in a way, you have contributed to the damage already done in Washington by involving yourself in this McCain campaign.

  1. I hate to say this, but if McCain is the nominee I will not vote in the Presidential election for the firt time since I was 18-years-old (25 years.) and what kills me, just when Romney was making some major headway toward uniting Conservatives, this jackleg governor comes out and tries to sway this thing all because McCain endorsed him a while back.
McCain will kill the Conservative Movement at a time when it needs to be revived. Not to mention, McCain has no chance in the General Election, regardless of what we are being told.
Give a voter a choice between a Democrat and a Democrat, and they'll choose a Democrat every time.
From immigration to tax cuts and the campaign finance farce, McCain has gone against Conservatives. He is not a viable choice for me.
