Goodbye New Hampshire, hello South Carolina
By Bryan Bender, Globe Staff
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Former Senator Fred Thompson is packing it in in New Hampshire after tonight's GOP debate and heading to South Carolina to launch a 11-day bus tour through the Palmetto State state that will take him through the Republican primary there on Jan. 19.
"The plan all along was to take the positive results in Iowa and springboard into South Carolina," said spokesman Jeff Sadosky. "The next dance for us is in South Carolina."
Thompson, who received high marks for his debate performance in Manchester on Saturday night, remains in the back of the pack in recent New Hampshirehire polls and is hoping to fare better in the South after his third-place finish in the Iowa caucuses on Thursday, Sadosky said.
But Thompson, a former movie actor, might want to consider the lesson learned by rival Rudy Giuliani.
The former New York City mayor, with barely a "thank you, you've been a wonderful audience'' to voters, left Iowa four days beforethe caucuses.
Giuliani never made Iowa a key part of his election strategy; the New York pol's pro-abortion rights stance does not sit well with the Christian conservatives who make up a substantial part of the Iowa Republican electorate.
But Giuliani ended up finishing a distant sixth in Iowa, garnering fewer than half the votes won by maverick Representative Ron Paul of Texas.

Giuliani.. that's pretty bad, even Paul who spent less time in Iowa got twice as many votes.
Giuliani's strategy all alone was to skip over Iowa and focus on Florida and the Feb 5 primaries. It wasn't a surprise that he would do poorly. But now everyone's second guessing his strategy because of the Iowa result. It doesn't make sense. He knew he wouldn't do well in Iowa. The media should wait to ask whether he regrets his strategy after the February 5th primaries. That's his true test. It's all part of a larger problem. The media rushes to draw conclusions instead of putting things in context.
Fred Thompson will be the next President of the United States
OBAMA!
Fred Thompson is probably the closest thing to our first nuclear war in election 2008. Coming from a firm liberal, Giuliani is a much better republican candidate, not only for our country and myself, but the world. How scary is that? I would gladly give up one of my limbs if people would wake up and realize the gravity of this election. I know I do.
that's cuz the Ron Paul white supremacists are crazy
Fred Thompson is doing the right thing. His base is in the southern states. He will catch up the Huckabee I believe. Rudy and Romney can't compete in the south due to them being northern liberals. McCain will more then likely win New Hamshire, but conservatives in the south aren't warm on him either. On the Democrat side, I have a feeling John Edwards will start to make a move on Barck Obama in the south as well. Since Obama and Hillary are northern liberals, the only other choices is Edwards from Norh Carolina.

Thompson skipped the first NH debate and said from the beginning that his strategy focused on a strong start in SC. Third place in Iowa was a definate positive. McCain should take NH and then he and Huck can officialy be listed as 1-hit wonders.
Oh ye of great doubts and little faith and no profound thoughts: --don't count your chickens until they hatch --it is not over by a long shot....hang on to your lollipops: this race for 2008 has just begun.....................................Go FRED in '08!
Fred Thompson never had designs on New Hampshire. As Huckabee falls apart (started Saturday, continued tonight on FoxNews), Thompson will pick up the lion's share of the cast-offs. That's a lot of votes in the Palmetto State.
Fred will win South Carolina . . . not 2nd place, but win. From there, it'll be on to Super Tuesday states.
Thompson's biggest challenge will be parlaying a South Carolina win into enough cash to campaign in multiple states. But with the Huckster out of the picture, there'll be more money for Fred to pick up.
Not only did Fred beat out McCain in Iowa for third place but Fred finished second in the virtually unreported Wyoming primary (which just for the record has more delegates at stake than New Hampshire). Fred is picking his states to compete in (no different than Guliani and others). Fred is a true conservative and so..drum roll puhleeze..is focusing his efforts on a conservative state like South Carolina ..smart strategy and it will work.
Fred will win because many voters, like myself, cannot conceive of any of the other so-called Republican candidates winning nationally. The party will only support a consistent conservative against the radically liberal Dumocrats. To do otherwise is to virtually give up.
How great was Thompson last night? He's so head and shoulders above the other candidates that people don't even realize the higher standard they hold him at.
Of negative campaigning Thompson basically said, everyone makes mistakes. While that statement was being made you know Fred's mind was swirling with the childish emotional mud-slinging the other candidates are engaging themselves in. It's hilarious to Fred Thompson and there's no chance you'd catch him in it. When he does jab an opponent, it's often light enough to get a chuckle out of the other candidates and sometimes even the one he's jabbing.
His long-term goals as the result of border security...to not only improve our situation but the situations of the people we're supposedly giving illegal amnesty to? Thompson basically came out and said, deport them all - yes, even their children. Even the children! He noted that the other candidates have some notions of amnesty that are based on "compassion", and acknowledged that's not a bad thing. However, he also noted that you're really not doing anyone any favors if you grant a generation of 12 million illegals amnesty. All you're doing is sending a message to their home countrys that the US will let you stay if you just wait it out. He further stated that when they're here, "'hiding in the shadows'", they're not getting healthcare or education or liberty. It's a drain on them and us. His close was classic too when he said his idea of a better long-term America just happens to result in a better country of origin for all the people the US doesn't let in. Did I mention that he went ahead and said, "Yes, the children too"? I did? Ok. Do I hate kids and foreigners? Hell no. BUT....we need someone firm, straight-shooting and strong to deliver the message - not the magic show.
Something to consider: during an election season we all look for ways candidates show instability or "flip flop". Bush however, is a political hump simply because he refuses to "flip flop" on a war nearly everyone supported initially or at least understand the meaning of. A bunch of innocent American people went to work one day and had....read this next part twice if you need to...had commercial airliners flown in to their office buildings by terrorists. That didn't go away folks. They want us all dead. The only shortcoming Bush has demonstrated is a poor ability to effectively communicate the message to the American people and the world at large. Fred Thompson knows those issues of terror and national security are very real, and can deliver that message.
You're not electing an individual who is going to do it all by him/herself. The history of the Presidency is peppered with hundreds of great minds that surrounded the office helping to drive and delegate global direction. You're electing a party and a vehicle to deliver the message and drive the United States' vitality. In my book, that person is an unchallenged Fred Thompson.

Fred Thompson is the candidate that we conservatives have been waiting to rally around. Since Ronald Reagan our party has been left with presidents who haven't carried the true conservative agenda. Now we have a man that can do that for us, that man is Fred Dalton Thompson. I would only ask that everyone do their research on each candidate very carefully & I'm sure you will come to the same conclusion. Strong security, low taxes, against illegal immigration, pro life, pro business, consistent record of being conservative. If you enjoyed the days of the Reagan White House then it's time to elect the man who can carry on the conservative coalition. Check the facts at Fred 08.com. & help elect the man we need as the next Presdent of the United States.
Fred Thompson needs to REALLY get going or "it's curtains" for him!
