Huckabee focuses on jobs in Michigan ad
Mike Huckabee, like Republican rivals John McCain and Mitt Romney, is appealing to Michigan voters' worries about the economy.
In a new TV ad he launched today, he says he knows what it's like to struggle financially while growing up, then talks about Michigan's loss of manufacturing jobs. The ad then introduces Huckabee's record as governor in Arkansas cutting taxes and "achieving record job growth." And it ends with the line that he debuted on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" last week: that he believes most Americans want a president "like the guy they work with, not the guy who laid them off."
The unemployment rate in Michigan in November, the most recent month available, was 7.4 percent, compared to 4.7 percent nationally and 4.3 percent in Massachusetts.
Huckabee, who won the Iowa caucuses last week and finished third in New Hampshire on Tuesday, is campaigning in South Carolina today, but is polling well in Michigan, where both McCain and Romney are stumping today. The Michigan primary next Tuesday could go a long way in confirming whether Huckabee as a national candidate, whether McCain's comeback in New Hampshire will last, and whether Romney stays in the race.

Huckabee will ultimately be remembered as a "stand-up" guy....referring to his humor....more than his ethics. I don't know about the rest of you, but his humorous good guy, ordinary Joe, schtick is beginning to wear a little thin with this observer. This comes from a conservative with Repulican leanings, who does not have a preference in the current mominating process and who also likes Huckabee for a variety of reasons.
But Commander in Chief??? I don't think so.
I want a serious guy in the White House. Someone who will got at those who would "bury"us with something more than a guitar and a quick quip.

I wish people would see past Mike Huckabee's facade and look at his liberal record as the governor of Arkansas:

Look through his "Awe Schucks" act and see him for what he really is. Mike Huckabee is a liberal in conservative clothing that uses the religion card to push his own agenda.
The one liner about having a president that is "like the guy they work with, not the guy who laid them off" is so bogus. He is aiming it at Romney, but either he doesn't know what a venture capitol company does, or he is trying to stir up lies. A venture capitol company (VC) buys a company that is failing (like KMart was) and then restructures it and then makes it profitable. Yes some jobs are lost, but instead of the company going bankrupt and all the people losing thier jobs, some people still have a job and the company can now start a better business that is focused on growth and prospering. Or a VC company funds start up ideas, thus increasing jobs. Bain Capitol during Romneys time there started start up like Staples, Bright Horizons Family Solutions, Brookstone, Domino's Pizza, Sealy, Guitar Center and The Sports Authority. That seems to me to say that Mitt Romney is the guy that helped bright and entreprenuial people create thousands of jobs. Way to go Mitt!!!

It is a little funny to note the twisted nature of many of these claims. Many of the pardons were given to folks who had already served their sentences and who got pardons because they had already lived successfully on "the outside".
Noone guilty of murder was released because of Huckabee's actions.
Most of these and many more would not have even been arrested in a Paul libertarian administration.
i think the presidential canidates stink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This country has 9 trillion dollars debt. How can any canidate possible lower taxes. We are dooming the next generation...and the next. It's just like people who have huge houses they can't afford and tons of credit card debt going into forclosure. Please wake up America!
Couldn't that line "like the guy they work with, not the guy who laid them off" get him kicked out of the Republican Party?
Couldn't that line "like the guy they work with, not the guy who laid them off" get him kicked out of the Republican Party?
In the Bible, Jesus defines a hypocrite as somebody who is close to Him in his words but corrupt in his heart. This clearly fits Mike Huckabee with the way he says he will take the high road and does the opposite. He wears his religion on his sleeve while trying to steal tax payer money including $70,000 in furniture from the governor’s mansion in Arkansas. It is one thing to raise taxes and parole murderers but it is completely different to have 14 ethics complaints while running on the holier than thou ticket.
John McCain is the best choice even if he does support amnesty for illegal immigrants, does not support tax cuts, and is old. He even promises that he will “follow Bin Laden to the gates of hell” even though I would be happy with Bin Laden in hell and don’t see the need for anybody to go there after him.
A simple challenge to anyone out there who has heard that Huckabee "is not a conservative". Go to his website and be fair-minded enough to hear HIS side of the story. I am a very staunch conservative on virtually ALL points and would not support a liberal candidate. When I checked out Huckabee I found the charges against him to be terribly overblown. There is no "perfect candidate" but Mike Huckabee is about as close as we're going to one in this election. Personally, I LOVE him! Keep this in mind. Not even Reagan himself would have passed the "Reagan conservative" test that Huckabee is being asked to pass. Reagan signed some HUGE tax-increases, dramatically increased the budget deficit and GRANTED AMNESTY to illegal aliens! To some of the conservative talk radio guys out there knocking Huckabee I say - Play FAIR Boys!
Regarding "his liberal record," please explain what liberal means to you (I know the dictionary has one definition, but always seems to get spun to an unrelated dimention).
We need to have a national conversation about what Conservative and Liberal really means - a benchmark definition because each of these terms are dirty words to many but no one ever provides context or any argument of substance.
Also, many are saying that if you want a smaller govt, fiscal responsibility, and social programs that are cost effective, then vote Democrat. The budget was balanced under 8 years of D' leadership, welfare programs were vastly reduced, we invested in our own country (not Iraq's), the size of govt was reduced, and businesses benefited from Democratic policies, so if that is liberal - or conservative - please help me out. Bush is big govt, big debt, big social programs(Iraq), and zero accountability.
Romney certainly reminds me of more of the guy from "Office Space" than your average co-worker.
Huckabee is not liberal. He certainly is not socially liberal (unlike Romney, who somehow claims he changed most of his views in the past couple of years). He also is the only candidate talking about totally eliminating the income tax in favor of a fair tax. It is the RINOs at Fox News and some other so-called "conservative" outlets who don't want real change and advocate the RINO most willing to play ball with them. Many of the rest of us just repeat what we hear them say.
Anyone interested in what Huckabee is really like face to face should try this funny (but it actually happened) column:
http://goupstate.us/index.php/lanefiller/2007/11/02/title_14
This is a joke right. These guys don't care about the middle class. These same guys McCain, Romney, Guiliani, Hucklebee, and Thompson all support the NAFTA treaty with Mexico that caused the great big sucking sound of jobs leaving the US. Furthermore they all support the war in Iraq and want to now invade Iran which has already made the US dollar worth nothing on the international markets and gas to cost $3.50 a gallon. Like these millionaires care about the middle class that is losing their homes because they have lost their jobs or medical costs are too high.
As nice as this guy seems, do we really want "Gomer" to represent our country?
The guy with the "facts" above is obviously a plant and not just someone posting. I think that should be obvious.
I am not supporting Huckabee but at least let's be fair in evaluating him. I want to see real people posting here not plants who troll the web for opportunities to smear a candidate.
That is the problem with politics today. It is not about discussing what matters. It is about who can crank out the most BS.
John McCain he will be 72 this summer, which means he can really only be elected Vice President. His health status hasn't been an issue yet, but you can be sure the Democrats will dig it up and use it. The Clinton's are experts at that with their so-called "secret police".
Rudy Giuliani ran hard in New Hampshire with more campaign events than John McCain - but lost badly. Online Rudy's considered a virtual joke, while New Yorkers actually showed up in New Hampshire to protest against his administration as Mayor.
Then yesterday the Boston Globe reported Romney praised the 2005 McCain-Kennedy Immigration Reform bill as a "reasonable plan" while conservatives like Congressman Tom Tancredo were calling it "amnesty". Don't you think Democrats are extremely bitter about the attacks on John Kerry as a flip-flopper and would love to face Romney?
That's why I ended up with Mike Huckabee. He knows how to campaign with less money than his opponents, in fact a lot less. I believe Huckabee's goal is to build a broader coalition of Republican voters, meaning even the economic conservatives will get most of what they want. However they have said they would prefer a Democrat to Huckabee so let's call them what they really are: elitist snobs!
The accelerated schedule this year is preventing thoughtful people from reaching a firm conclusion much before they vote, while the easily swayed boys-on-the-bandwagon don't have time to come to their senses and see through the smooth talk.
Fred is working hard to get his message through, but at a serious disadvantage with all the liberal press spinning against him. He remains the only true conservative in the race (which is very different than the false conservatives, Mitt & Mike). He is the only Republican which can rally the base and capture the solid south - both of which we must do to win.
Fred has a chance if the SC conservatives remember what is really important. This election cycle could have a greater impact on abortion practices in the US than anything else since Roe v. Wade.
In the 70's, with a House & Senate and most State Houses controlled by his party, a Democratic President championed the ERA amendment to the Constitution. At a time much less contentious than today this relatively noncontroversial amendment could not be passed. That is how difficult it is to amend our Constitution.
Anyone that believes the Constitution can be amended to stop abortion is living a fool's dream and any candidate that claims that a Constitutional amendment is the way to end abortion in the US is playing us like fools. It can't be done. It won't happen. Why do you think no one has ever tried?
It is not within the President's power to amend the Constitution - candidates point to the amendment process to avoid taking any responsibility for action.
Only Thompson is serious about bringing abortion under control and has a practical plan to achieve that goal. The solution is to appoint one more strict constructionist to the Supreme Court. But the pro-abortionist know this, too. Winning confirmation for the right candidate will be the fight of the century. It will take every ounce of a President's political capital to win the fight. Any compromise in selecting the nominee will allow abortion to continue unchecked for another generation.
Huckabee and Romney have both demonstrated their willingness to seek compromise or shift positions whenever politically advantageous. I honestly don't think McCain or Giuliani would even try to appoint a strict constructionist. The only candidate we have that can be trusted NOT compromise his principles – or our faith in him - is Fred Thompson. It doesn't matter how hard or long the battle. Fred knows how important this is. Fred knows what really matters. If you really want the ongoing massacre of the unborn to stop - you need to get very serious about this election. Look at the facts. Look at the history of each candidate's actions. You will come to agree that Fred Thompson is our ONLY prayer.
I like the guy , he is as real as it gets. Plus the fact he wants to do away with the IRS is great. he is the only guy running that has any experience running government.
Less taxes, concealed carry permit holder, former minister, supported troop surge Hmmmm. If that's not Republican what is? Romney is a tool, good businessman, but nothing else. Mccain screwed the NRA. You can pick anyone apart, but this guy stand's for the Constitution. I'm all for Fred 08, but if you want someone who will win, by getting the swing vote, vote for Huckabee.
As someone that has a number of family members that live in Arkansas, they KNOW Mike Huckabee's record firsthand because he was their Governor for over 10 years and their Lt. Governor prior to that - they LOVE MIKE HUCKABEE and none of them are liberals! They are honest hardworking people and they KNOW AND TRUST MIKE HUCKABEE!
I have followed his campaign and record extensively for several months and I can assure you that we also love Mike Huckabee.
Mike Huckabee was named 1 of the Best Five Governors by Time Magazine
He was re-elected until his term limits expired
Excerpt from Dick Morris article -
MIKE HUCKABEE IS A FISCAL CONSERVATIVE
In Arkansas, the income tax when he took office was 1 percent for the poorest taxpayers and 7 percent for the richest, exactly where it stood when he left the statehouse 11 years later. But, in the interim, he doubled the standard deduction and the child care credit, repealed capital gains taxes for home sales, lowered the capital gains rate, expanded the homestead exemption and set up tax-free savings accounts for medical care and college tuition.
Most impressively, when he had to pass an income tax surcharge amid the drop in revenues after Sept. 11, 2001, he repealed it three years later when he didn’t need it any longer.
He raised the sales tax one cent in 11 years and did that only after the courts ordered him to do so. (He also got voter approval for a one-eighth-of-one-cent hike for parks and recreation.)
I endorse Mike Huckabee because:
Our country was founded by men who believed in God, and were not afraid to stand up for what is right. By believing, it doesn't make Mike Huckabee a bad leader, it makes him a better one. This quote says a lot when you take a moment to think about where we came from:
"George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, first chief justice John Jay. Names synonymous with the spirit of our country. Founding fathers of the U.S.A. Over 200 years ago they shook of the chains of tyranny from Great Britain, by divine call. Citing 27 biblical violations they wrote the Declaration of Independence, with Liberty and justice for all. But something happened since Jefferson called the bible the cornerstone for American Liberty, then put it in our schools as a light. Or since give me liberty or give me death, Patrick Henry said our country was founded on the gospel of Jesus Christ. We eliminated God from the equation of American life, thus eliminating the reason this Nation first began. From beyond the grave I can hear the voices of our founding fathers plead, you need God in America again. Of the 55 men who formed the constitution, 52 were active members of their church. Founding fathers like Noah Webster who wrote the first dictionary, could literally quote the bible chapter and verse. James Madison said we've staked our future on our ability to follow the Ten Commandments with all our heart. These men believed you couldn't even call yourself an American, if you subvert the word of God. In his farewell address, Washington said you can't have National morality apart from religious principal, and it's true." (Carman)
I support Mike Huckabee because of what he stands for. He is intelligent, charming, funny, professional, inspiring and a really great guy.
Dan Campbell
Maybe I am Paroniod., but am I the only one who is unable to download this Michigan Commercial that Huckabee ran today??? I have tried every which way., it will not download and open.........what's up with this., ???
Viewing all this from Australia, Mike Huckabee strikes one as a bloody good down to earth bloke who speaks his mind.Government needs guys like this.
Mike Huckabee has mislead conservative evangelicals about immigration every time he speaks. As a Christian, I'm offended and ashamed whenever he says he's not pro-amnesty. On his website, he implies illegals must go home during a 120 day period, then get in the back of the line. His dishonesty begins when his plan allows the illegals to return to the U.S. within days. He neglects to tell Americans this provision. This working man, as he portrays himself, was investigated 14 times and charged with 14 ethic violations during his governorship. He is false.
MIKE HUCKABEE INTOLERANCE PROBLEM....
Let us assume for a moment that Mike Huckabee gets nominated by the Republican Party for the presidency. I know it is a bold assumption.. Let us examine his chances of his winning the general election without Mormon votes. Given current American voting trends and demographics, he would have no chance. If the Huckster is nominated, the swing states of Nevada (about 10% Mormon), Oregon (4%) and New Mexico (4%) will swing to the Democrats. Remember that President Bush lost Oregon by a couple thousand votes in 2000; New Mexico by a few hundred and picked it up in 2004 by an equally slim margin. Besides losing swing states in 2008, Republicans could also lose solidly red states if they embrace the bigot for president. What would losing a large voting block in, if not the states of, Utah (1.8 million Mormons), Idaho (15%), Wyoming (14%), and Arizona (6%) (you don’t hear McCain bashing Mormons, do you? in fact he’s done just the opposite) do for Republican hopes in 2008? Defections of Mormons in Colorado (131,000) and California (750,000) might cost a few Republican congressional seats. Losing the most-solidly Republican block in the country, the Mormons, or even putting it in play, would turn red states blue and eliminate any hopes of Republicans holding Colorado in the Senate or retaining the White House.
Mormons are tolerant folks, but they don’t tolerate anti-Mormon hostility, especially the bigotry that has been demonstrated by Huckabee’s supporters and, by extension Huckabee, for Huckabee’s failure to call them on it. So, when all of these Mormons decide that they are not going to tolerate an anti-Mormon bigot in the White House, will Mormons in those states vote for a third party or just stay home? Both options are being openly discussed in Mormon circles. If it is a third party, Mormons trend Libertarian; but that is beside the point. How could you vote for someone who is completely intolerant of your faith? Mormons have marched along supporting the candidates of the evangelical right for decades (who voted more reliably for Bush than Mormons? Not evangelicals.) and this Mormon and many others he happens to be talking to are ready to leave the party if Huckabee is nominated or his anti-Mormon campaign continues to be tolerated by the party.
Think of Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona turning blue? Impossible? Not if an anti-Mormon is on the Republican ticket. People say Romney can’t win without evangelicals, well, Huckabee or any other Republican can’t win without Mormons in 2008. It’s a two-way street. No Republican will win the presidency in 2008 without us.
Before anyone discounts the idea of blue Mormons, consider that Harry Reid, the Democratic leader in the Senate is, a Mormon, who, despite being a Democrat, has enjoyed splitting the typically Republican Mormon vote in Nevada. More telling is that Utah County, the home of BYU and the most densely Mormon and Republican area in Utah had a Democrat representing it in Congress for most of the 1990s.
If anyone has any questions about how strongly many of us feel about this, let me say that I am as likely to support Mike Huckabee as Jesse Jackson would support David Duke. Is that clear enough?
Talk about a flip flop, Huckabee has done a 180 degree turn on illegal immigration. At least Mitt Romney's happened a couple of years ago, not since he started campaigning. Read the following excerpt from wikipedia's article on him:
[In opening remarks among Hispanic civil rights leaders at a LULAC convention, Huckabee said the nation will need to address the concerns of the Hispanic community because of its growing influence and population base. "Pretty soon, Southern white guys like me may be in the minority," Huckabee said jokingly as the crowd roared in laughter. He told the LULAC delegates that their presence in the state's capital city was very important because Arkansas has one of the fastest growing Hispanic populations in the nation. "Your gathering is so very significant for our state," Huckabee said.[98] Roy Beck, whose 1.5 million member organization NumbersUSA played a major role in defeating the Senate immigration bill, calls Huckabee "an absolute disaster as governor of Arkansas... Every time there was any enforcement in his state, he took the side of the illegal aliens." Huckabee responded by saying if voters are looking for the toughest guy on immigration, he's not their man.] from {Wikipedia search: Mike Huckabee}.
Huckabee also took so many gifts while he was governor. We need someone who is not swayed by gift-giving. Mitt Romney is a millionaire that never even took a salary while he was the governor of Massachusetts. He also shamed the states congress for trying to increase their salaries while he was governor.
The tax plan that Huckabee wants will never materialize. For one thing, Congress and those employed by the IRS and support roles (i.e. CPA, tax attorneys, ect) would never let the IRS be dissolved. Secondly, if by some miracle it did get dissolved there would be a huge recession that would follow, because the vast amount of people would cut spending because everything would cost at least 23% more. Besides this lets off the really rich guys who save a ton of money (not spending) and make loads more on their investments. They spend a lot, but not in comparison to how much they make. Besides it would increase people going to foreign countries and spending lavishly there, but not here. It would hurt tourism, because people would not come as often because everything would cost at least 23% more. This is a very devastating tax plan. It will let those who can pay a lot off the hook and leave the middle class to take the brunt of the burden.
The tax plan should be simplified and then taxes should be spent only on what the public needs are, not congresses or lobbies wish lists. Romney can get this done. He has the history and experience that can work for everyone’s benefit.
Mike Huckabee DOES believe in his interruptation of God. Evangelicals believe in their interruptation of God. Both put "their" God first and conservative principles second. They choose according to their interruptation of God what conservative principles to believe in. No all evangelicals, but Mike Huckabee certainly does not pattern the conservative principles of say a Ronald Reagan.
Mike Huckabee has been very liberal in his approach to immigration, taxes, and criminal law. He is a reeal conservative on life and guns. He will talk up God in Iowa and South Carolina because "he is one of them", they have all gone to church together and interrupted God the same way. McCain will talk up being a Governor in New Hampshire and Michigan. Chuck Norris was pretty vocal about that in New Hampshire (not in Iowa) when he wondered why Mike Huckabee was be called a minister instead of a Governor. Minister worked in Iowa, but wasn't a drawing ticket in New Hampshire Huckbee says what he thinks will catch a listening ear in the state that he is campaigning in. (He is for change....change for the constituants you are addressing). On the late night talk shows I have observed that he will say what he thinks will catch a laugh with the audience. He has even chosen his running mate from one of the late night talk show hosts!!! That and is guitar playing moments have caught him some popular attention and he loves that. I think if he does not win the bid for President of the United States we will see Huckabee move into the media scene....talk show host, radio personality, maybe the movies. He loves a spotlight.
He doesn't have money to spend on ads and he will revert to "free" anything that will get his pandering message to the people. Huckabee likes free. He liked it when he was Govenor too.
In Huckabee's view, his God (Baptisit interruption) comes first, second poor Americans like himself, third liberal fiscal agenda's to help the poor because it is government's number one reason for being , fourth a smattering of conservative views. Most evangelicals have the same order with the possiblity of "life" being second over the issue of the "poor".
In my mind it might be Huckabee's misinterruptation of God that has thrown him into the liberal mix.
We need a candidate that believes in God and has an understanding of how God

I am pretty sure it is the work of Mitt's Camp. They should do a better Job next time. Learn from HUCKABEE on how to be smart.
Mitt is proving to be a BIG TIME SPENDER in the campaigning itself. How can he save the Federal money and economy?
Huckabee is like the guy you work with -- the one who hangs out the water cooler chatting all day, joking around at meetings to cover up his cluelessness. The guy who comes late, leaves early, and takes 2 hour lunches. He's the kind of guy you wish you could hate, because he's holding your project back, but he does make it fun. And the company keeps him around for morale, but it's backfiring on them because he hates the people who sign his check, and encourages everyone else to hate them too.
Personally, when it comes to POTUS, I'd rather vote for the guy who created the job ;-)
I am a traditional American liberal. Huckabee is pretty far down the list of those I'd even begin to consider as a future leader for our nation. So, I don't understand why Steven W, with all of his Facts, wants to associate him with my kind. This isn't to say that the long list of litmus test issues Steven W wants to tarnish Huckabee and "liberals" with shouldn't have some nuance, but you can keep him. We don't want him.
I am a democrat and Huckabee is the only republican candidate that appears to be almost human. Americans absolutely want a president that is more like them instead of the guy that laid them off. Go Huckabee!
I learned more about Huckabee from reading these comments than I knew before since the mainstream news had sort of ignored him. I thank all of you for posting your comments. I defended Mike Huckabee 2 days ago by sending emails to the news agencies around the world because he had been attacked by a homosexual for his religious beliefs that sodomy is a sin against GOD. Leviticus 18:22 is writtten to men, 'thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is abomination." I also believe The Bible to be the inspired word of GOD and am impressed when men or women stand up for it. The fact that Mike Huckabee is a Baptist ordained Minister gives me some hope that his life and his way of leading would be based upon the character of GOD 's Spirit living in him and directing
One hopes that, absent a Huckabee campaign effort to defend itself, the media will counter Romney attacks by pointing out how, at Bain Capital, Mr. Romney used offshore corporations to avoid U.S. taxation, and he fee-milked acquired businesses before firing workers and taking them into bankruptcy ( http://snipr.com/romneyoffshore ), to amass his great $250,000,000 wealth.
So, when you compare how Mr. Huckabee's visionary FairTax advocacy ( http://snipr.com/nextrung ) compares to Romney's interest in the current tax system, it's pretty easy to see who will lead us out of tax slavery ( http://snipr.com/taxburden ) - $265 billion annual tax code compliance costs representing 5 billion wasted hours, annually.
