In S.C., Romney talks jobs, lowers expectations

By Michael Levenson, Globe Staff

BLUFFTON, S.C. -- Mitt Romney is shifting expectations and ramping up his promise to "fight for every job," a day after winning the primary in his native Michigan.

Making his first stop in South Carolina today, he said flatly that he did not expect to win the primary here on Saturday. South Carolina is called the gateway to the Republican nomination because since 1980 it has picked the candidate who has gone on to become the party's nominee. And Romney invested early here in his campaign. But John
McCain has jumped to the top in the polls

"Senator McCain has a very strong lead here," Romney told reporters after speaking to residents of a retiree community. "He's the clear front-runner. It would be an enormous surprise if he weren't able to win here. I'd like to do better than my current place, which is fourth, but even a strong fourth is better than what some of the other
guys saw in Michigan last night."

Later, he added, more bluntly: "This is a state I'd expect Senator McCain has pretty well wrapped up."

Romney made clear he is focusing on the Nevada caucuses on Saturday -- he noted that Nevada awards 34 delegates to South Carolina's 24 -- and on the Florida primary on Jan. 29. He plans to campaign in Nevada
Thursday and Friday.

"I'm not looking for gold stars on my forehead like I was in first grade," Romney said. "I want delegates, and I'm pleased that I've been able to get delegates. The fact that I came in second in a couple of primaries -- I know something people think that's a devastating thing -- actually, I got delegates. And I'm looking to rack up the
delegates I need to win the convention."

Talking about Florida, where Rudy Giuliani has focused his efforts, Romney said: "Florida looks wide open. Instead of being the firewall for the Giuliani campaign, it's going to be a real contest."

And Romney continued the message of economic optimism that his advisers believe powered him to a win in Michigan, which has been battered job losses in the auto industry. Speaking to the retirees below a banner that read "Washington is Broken," he noted that South Carolina's unemployment rate was 5.9 percent in November, the fourth highest in the nation. He decried South Carolina's declining textile and furniture-making industries.

"I will fight to try to improve the employment anyplace where it's in trouble," Romney told the retirees. "I'll try to help us return a stronger housing market to this country. I will fight to try to reignite our economy and I will fight most importantly long-term to keep America, as it has always been, the most powerful economic engine in the world. "

  1. Romney won and has been at the top of every primary, because he is the only well-rounded conservative with a chance on winning the presidency. Here’s why:
He has more executive experience than any candidate.
He is a strong social conservative.
    He has vision for change
He can turn around other mistakes made prior to his taking the Job. (Bain Capital, Olympics, MA. Huge deficit, Big Dig Fiasco, and he'll do the same in Iraq)
Huckabee is a nice guy... so is Jimmy Carter
Mccain is a great american but he continually pals around with Kennedy, Lieberman, Feingold etc..
Be Smart. Look at the Facts.

  1. The ONLY reason Huckabee won Iowa is because some well known evangelical leaders came out and said Rudy is too liberal and Mitt is a Mormon....look for a 3rd party candidate. NExt thing you know the Southern Baptist minister is winning Iowa. Huckabee doesnt deserve to be where he is right now. McCain and Rudy....dont even get me started on them. The only two republicans I would vote for is eather Romney or Thompson. All the others are just crap

  1. Romney is by far the best bet for a economically savvy president. As Chad has posted, he is also steeped in executive leadership and has made tough decisions. Rudy, John, Fred and Mike can't hold a candle to him.

  1. I look forward to a Romney Presidency. I believe that he has the right stuff to make the tough decisions that will need to be made. His business acumen is what this country needs in these difficult economic times.

  1. Personally I think democrat will win the election this year. However, I think Romney would not be a bad choice. Media and the other candidates try to make him look like a flip flopper. I don't think there is any politician who never changed positions. Does that make someone a bad person/candidate? I don't think so. People make mistakes and learn from them. I think Romney is a genuine honest person. Republicans have the best chance against democrats if they nominate Romney.

  1. Wow, Romney told the truth about John McCain winning here! Please, people, do NOT vote for Mitt Romney in the primary. He is such a shady character, I simply cannot abide him. If you don't like McCain, fine, then vote for someone else. But don't vote for Romney. If he couldn't win Iowa or New Hampshire after all his campaigning and money spent there, he's unloved. Plain and simple.

  1. MA has one of the worst job growths in the country when Mitt was governor. And please, one of the strongest social conservatives? Isn't this the guy that worked with Ted Kennedy on the socialized care that MA has? He can't have it both ways, that he works well across the aisle but that McCain is bad because he did the same. And cut the business acumen stuff, George Bush has an MBA and he is an economic failure for this country, the businessman president hasnt been a good model, and Romney as governor proved it isnt a good model for governors either. Weld was much much better economically.

  1. I think John McCain and Rudy Guiliani are excellent candidates. Both has common sense, they won't make promises they can't keep, and each believes that America needs to win the war on terror by doing it right (not just throwing money at the thing). The last thing we need is someone who wrongly believes they can save manufacturing jobs (kiss them goodbye forever, thanks to the unions), they can just pull out of Iraq (attacks will increase after they see we'll run when we get our noses bloodied), and that America can continue spending as it has for these years. Rudy and McCain both have cost-cutting strategies for the government, which is what we need. Screw these other guys, they're just saying what people want to hear so they can win...and that's the WRONG candidate we need right now.

  1. I like the way Romney cleaned up the Medical Examiner's Office and Crime Lab...Ooops his new Chief Medical Examiner got fired and like all the others is suing. Will someone actuallly investigate the corruption at the Medical Examiner's and throughout the grants in Public Safety. Ironically, with these documented deficiencies Romney is FOR Capital Punishment in Mass. because of the advances in Forensics? Give me a break....I guess you can run but you can't hide from the facts. Now a Bio- Lab...Grants, Grants, Grants....Public Safety will definetly prosper but would you like to live in the South End?

  1. Romney is the only guy, Democrat or Republican, that has the vision and understanding to get the US back as the leader in manufacturing and economic development.

Detroit, as an example, has been given up for dead by the past 5 to 6 administrations. Romney understands the American Spirit, and knows full well we have what it takes to become THE leader in the automotive industry again.

He is a problem solver. Noone else, left or right, running in this race is.

  1. What the U.S. need now is not another politician but someone with the qualities of a strong leader: proven executive, smart businessman, social and economic conservative; and a very decent person -- that is Mitt Romney.

If you look at the history and persona of McCain, Huckabee, Clinton, Obama, Giuliani -- give me a break! These guys have no clue what is wrong with America!

Strong national security needs strong economic security. Only a Romney presidency would America has a chance to get out of this economic mess.

I am for Romney and no one else! I urge America to do the same. Romney is Mormon, I am Catholic. I see in Romney the embodiment of a good Christian leader.

  1. Well, let me see. Did Mitt Romney came in second from both places? There must be a lot of people voting for him after all, even though he didn't win, but still better than many other Republican candidates. He has done good jobs in every job he has been involved. And most of all, he had done good job as MA's governor. Go Mitt Romney!

  1. If Romney doesn't get the nomination, then the liberal media can pat themselves on the back for forcing John McCain down the mouths of the collective uninformed. Romney simply crushes John McCain ideologically and intellectually.

  1. I think Romney is the best choice for our country. He is highly qualified to turn our economy around and we desperately need that. I hope that he gets the Republican nomination and I also hope that he chooses John McCain as his running mate as they would make an ideal team to run our country.

  1. For all of Romney's perceived flaws (that much of the media and his opponents on both sides of the isle have tried to create out of nothing), none of them run deep. Romney is definitely human. He is definitely imperfect. I'm sure he has things to learn like we all do. But on the most important matters he is spot on. Romney is ultimately a deeply devoted husband and father. He has been faithful and true to his good wife Ann for their entire marriage. He has reared upstanding children who are productive members of society. He is genuinely a kind, compassionate, and responsible individual whose work ethic is unparalled. No one on either side of the isle possesses his business acumen. His intelligence is hard to match.
My take is that behind the nice hair, beautiful family, and sound bites, Mitt Romney is a man who believes in the equality of humankind above all other things. Mitt Romney is a man who would rather work with others to solve a problem instead of rigidly decreeing his position was the only one that had any value. He seems to be level headed, reasonable, rational, and of sound judgment. He has been successful in more than just business.

  1. For those who have questions about Romney, and his stance on the issues, go to his website and look at the videos under the heading "issues". Yeah, they are "productions", but he is spot-on the topics of the day. How this guy doesn't get elected in a free country beats me!

  1. Steve,

I am sad to see how brain washer you are. What makes you think Romney is shady? I am sorry my friend but you are watching tv too much. You need to talk or listen to Romney then cast judgement. And what is this talk about Romney spending too much money. I don't see any problem with that. People are talking as if having money is a bad thing. After all we all agree that American dream is about having success and making money. Romney was highly succesful in the private sector and I am sure he will be able to fix this economy. So Steve, if you want to ask people not to vote for Romney then try to have a better argument than just saying he is Romney is "shady". I think you don't like Romney simply because he is a mormon but you are too coward to say it outlout. Shame on you.

  1. A vote for McCain is a vote for more open border policies. A vote for huckabee is the same thing. Even democrats agree with the republicans, the open border policy of america is not working. Too many people coming over and not coming to work but to get on all the free welfare programs. Programs that are paid for by hard working american tax payers. Romney and Thompson are the only candidates running that will secure our borders and send the illegal aliens back home. We can't afford to pay for their healthcare. Quite frankly, we can't even afford to pay for our own.

Romney has the brains and the integrity so save America from the politicians.

    GO MITT!

  1. Annalogy of illegal immigration:
I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed.
What a beauty of a bird feeder it is, as I filled it lovingly with seed.
Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous
flow of free and easily accessible food.

But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above
the table, and next to the barbecue.

Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the
    table ... everywhere!

Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck
me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket.

And others birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and
squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I
fill it when it got low on food.

After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took
down the bird feeder and in three days
the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests
they had built all over the patio.

Soon, the back yard was like it used to be .. quiet, serene and no one
demanding their rights to a free meal.

    Now let's see ..
Our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care,
and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen.

Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up
to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have
to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child's 2nd
grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't
    speak English.

Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to 'press one' to hear my
bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than 'Old Glory'
are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free
    liberties.

Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the
    bird feeder.

Vote MITT! He WILL secure our borders!

  1. If Romney can manage and turnaround what then was the most corrupt , dishonest, bribing, in debt, money losing, intrenched, international, black hole, money pit on the face of the earth - AND DO IT IN UTAH - in about a 2 year period, then he has what it takes. The Olympics started out so far in debt and so corrupt for so long - then along came Mitt and the Olympics ended up with 100,000,000.00 in profit (got that amount !) to go to charity and an endowment for the upkeep and maintenance of all the facilities that were built for the Olympics in Utah - FOREVER ! Never before, and I doubt ever again will any Olympics hosted by any government or country in the world ,ever come close to this. He is Smart, Caring, Humble, Fair, Decisive, patriotic and able to put a team together that know
how to get things done fast. No one else, Democratic or Republican can hold a candle to him. I'll be sick to think of what could have been in the old USA if he does't get elected.

  1. I'll take any candidate other than John "BOMB BOMB Iran" McCain. He's a total Lieberman Neo-Con that will be nothing but a puppet of that tiny paranoid tribe in the Middle East that already controls almost all of our media and has bought off virtually every politician. As diverse a group as Richard Nixon, Billy Graham and Ralph Nader stated as much. See: youtube.com/watch?v=bCuCLA0DhBs

  1. He ran like a democrat to win Michigan and has stolen Obama's campaign themes. Doesn't that make you proud? He will say anything to be elected, even that if his church leaders wanted to talk about issues he "wouldn't listen." Ask him about the layoffs his company was responsible for in Michigan. Is he planning to bring THOSE jobs back?

But I guess it's the dems fault Ford and Chevy can't build a tranny that will last for 60 thousand miles.
Whatever you want to hear, that's what Mitt will give you...

  1. People –

It is ironic that we are sending to undeclared wars by Congress thousands of our young man and women to Kill or be kill “to bring Democracy and freedom” as President Bush once says, while here at home we have a set of media and industries conglomerate behaving in ways that point to a different trajectory. These groups are following the trajectory that our founder’s fathers were against it, the trajectory they suffered from, the one they saw and felt and united them to bring about our beloved Constitution.

For the most part these conglomerate using sillies excuses acting like third world countries do during any governmental elections. One need to look next door elections (Mexico) as well as Venezuela just to mention a few to see the similarities. If you look at those two countries past elections you will see the same pattern of distortions and half-truth to those individuals they do not want to get any track while giving as much media cover to those they represent and want.(did someone says Fair and Balance?) it must be an illusion. May be that is why In venezuela one main Tv station GlobolVision was closed by the goverment not so long ago for portraying to be "Fair and Balance" during the Coup d'état.

One need to think What is going on in this country? Do the economy controllers think that the American people is so concern about their daily chores that we have actually become sheep just as Judge Napolitano latest book “A Nation of Sheep” explain?

There is so much the American people can take before the giant awakes, and that my friends is what is taking place, this and other important issues is resonating to the American people of all ages and they are being carry by Dr. Ron Paul message.
It is the common citizen that are awakening from all the noise that for so long has been dominating the political arena and the people in general feels disfranchised.

A concern of our present and future wellbeing is at stake and change is desperate WANTED. Use the power of your vote and voice to bring change not just to the executive but especially the legislative branch.

  1. McCain won Iow and New Hampshire gathering votes from Independents.
In SC, Independents will not vote in the Republican Primary. Mose Republicans, in general terms, do not trust or agree with McCain.
