Kerry endorses Obama
By Marcella Bombardieri, Globe Staff
Bringing his fat fund-raising Rolodex and foreign policy gravitas, John F. Kerry, the Democratic nominee for president in 2004, endorsed Barack Obama today, declaring that the Illinois senator has "the greatest potential to lead a transformation, not just a transition."
The junior US senator from Massachusetts was joined in the Obama camp later in the day by Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota and veteran Congressman George Miller of California. After Obama's surprise defeat in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, the flurry of big-name endorsements may help him pick up steam again heading into a long, hard fight with Hillary Clinton in Nevada and South Carolina later this month, and then in 22 states that vote on Feb. 5.
Kerry dwelled on Obama's inspirational power, saying Washington will have "no choice but to listen." He scoffed at the idea -- which Clinton has promoted -- that Obama is offering false hope and is too young and inexperienced for the Oval Office. Thomas Jefferson was just 33 when he wrote the Declaration of Independence, and Martin Luther King Jr. only 26 when he led the Montgomery bus boycott, Kerry noted.
"My friends, when we choose a president, we are electing judgment and character, not years on this earth," he said at a rally in Charleston, S.C.
Kerry has an unparalleled list of three million supporters from 2004, a rich resource for Obama's fund-raisers. He sent an e-mail to them on Obama's behalf yesterday, and Obama is expected to send an appeal today.
Kerry, who lost narrowly to President Bush in 2004, passed over his running mate, John Edwards -- all the more stinging since Kerry made his endorsement public in Edwards' native state of South Carolina, which Edwards won in 2004 and where he needs to vault ahead to revive his flagging campaign.
The two men have been on less-than-close terms since Edwards complained after they lost the White House that Kerry would not let him fight back against the "Swift Boat" attacks on Kerry's record of service in Vietnam. Kerry retorted that it was Edwards who refused to wade into the fight.
Edwards issued a statement this afternoon that was by turn gracious and dismissive. "Our country and our party are stronger because of John's service, and I respect his decision," he said, but added: "I continue to believe that this election is about the future, not the past."
Kerry and Clinton also have bad blood going back to 2006, when Kerry made a gaffe when he suggested that young people who don't do well in school get "stuck in Iraq." Although Kerry aides said he had misspoken and meant to poke fun at Bush, not the troops, Clinton quickly deemed the remark "inappropriate."
By contrast, Kerry did an important favor for Obama by asking the young Senate candidate to be the keynote speaker at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, giving him the national platform to begin establishing his reputation as a rising star.
Kerry is the latest prominent Massachusetts Democrat to join Obama's team, following Governor Deval Patrick and Representative William Delahunt, among others.
Clinton, Obama's main rival for the Democratic nomination, has Representatives Barney Frank, Stephen Lynch, James McGovern, and Richard Neal in her corner.
Senator Edward M. Kennedy has not yet made his pick.

I'm sorry I voted for him. He should not have endorsed anyone so soon. I'm for Edwards and will continue to be for Edwards. Edwards has the qualities that I feel will best help this country.
Wonder how Edwards feels about that.
Hopefully Obama won't take a page from Kerry's autobiography, "How to Blow a Presidential Election in One Month."
I now know who will get my vote- Kerry made that decison for and it will not be Obama.
The only other endorsement that could damage Obama worse would have to be Kucinich (whom I rather admire but I know he's the Jerry Brown of this generation).
Senator Ketchup is a politcal back-stabber , simple as that.
I really think that the reason John Edwards was marginalized by the press all last year, and now by his party, is because of his desire to reverse the control of big money over Washington. It must be a blow to see John Kerry join the rank and file of those interests. It is hard for me here in Iowa to watch the other two candidates, with their huge amounts of money, use it to get on TV all day and all night espousing the views that originated with John Edwards. Hillary Clinton's health care plan that she adopted in August is the exact plan I was hearing in Town Hall meetings here from February on from John Edwards, and Obama's new phrase "We as a nation are better than that" as a response to widespread poverty, was John Edwards' keynote phrase in speeches here in Iowa for months before Obama ever said it. This is very painful. Money has purchased our democracy, and if any honest, decent leaders arise, money defeats their cause.
Uh oh, Obama. You might wish to ask "Yawn" Kerry to reconsider.
I wonder how John Edwards feels about his former running mate.
Does the name John Edwards ring any bells for you JK?
Senator Kerry, Obama is trying to win, what could you possibly add to his campaign to help him win?
the democratic nomination is a two pony race, however hillary (imo) doesn't stand a chance of being elected, if she were to become the dem. nominee mayor bloomberg would jump in the race as an independent, steal her votes and basically assure another republican enters the white house next year. this is not an indictment of her abilities but she is far too polarizing.
Nice to see Kerry returning the favor to Edwards by endorsing someone else...but then again nothing surprises me with this gold digging flip flopper.
Can't we just all get along?
To #4: Anyone who would cease to support Obama after hearing this is just a bit too impressionable.
Edwards and Hillary are both fakes. I guess she's going to weep her way to the nomination.
What a moron! He thinks he is a kingmaker! Kerry is a loser!
Who the hell cares about his endorsement? Obama will definitely lose because of this endorsement.
I am not surprised that John Kerry endorsed Barack Obama. Barack Obama is being endorsed because of he can be the most powerful leader for real change in America. Just listen to him once and you will know he means what he says . He will stand up for the rights of workers, women, retirees, minorities, glbt people and families, no back and forth, no switching positions. His strength is clearly seen in how he thinks on his feet and can come up with answers to difficult problems. I saw him twice, reviewed all of his positions on his website, and read his history, and I am sure of this. He is for real, and Kerry was the "real deal" too.
With Obama's ability to "create" new Democrats and change the playing field by bringing in more voters than ever before, other Democrats will want to ride those coattails and I would look for further high level endorsements to Obama in the upcoming weeks.
Et tu, Brutus?
Endorsements mean nothing. Anyone who votes for someone based upon endorsements is absolutely stupid. Make up your own mind based upon the criteria -- don't let someone else decide for you.
And re: Laura, you forgot your tinfoil hat. Edwards is losing because he's running on last year's message. Then he's attempting to ride Obama's message, but everyone sees what he's really doing. His lines failed in 2004, they are failing in 2008. There's no massive buyout of the government, we aren't beholden to every special interest (otherwise how would you explain NAMBLA never getting their desires?), and we don't need a savior in the form of a sleazy lawyer.
John Kerry is nothing but a rat... I am sorry I voted for him.
Obama is a fine person, but he is no different from any of the others running for office. He will present and say what it takes to get into office. Agent of change - I bet!!
Very very surprised at Kerry., because our governor is endorsing him, what
do you expect.
Obama need Oprah to get him ahead, that is pretty sad
I will vote for Hillary, Seems like the men cannot do it, why not try a women
I cannot believe that the American people are actually thinking of putting
Obama in as president, he is not from this country and his back round is
much to be desire.
Americans look before voting and make sure it the right choice.
Endoresement do not matter, our voting system does, as Kerry well knows. I cannot believe the so-called Intelligentsia of the media are so bewildered and so baffled as to the wide discrepancy between the exit polls and the polling and the so-called actual vote in the Obama total for New Hampshire'sTuesday night primary. In the very first two vote tallys done by paper ballots put in boxes, the exit polls were not wrong, and Obama won those voting places by a large margin. The reason for the later discrepancies are due to MACHINE TAMPERING. The Powers that Be were not ready to give Obama the victory. It happened with Gore, it happened with Kerry and it will happen with Huckabee. HOWEVER, IT DID NOT HAPPEN IN THE IOWA CAUCUSES BECAUSE PEOPLE STAND UP IN THE LIGHT OF DAY AND ARE COUNTED. The Powers that Be cannot control that. And, until we address this secret weapon of the Powers that Be, the people cannot vote their true choice into office, that would be like putting the power into the People's hands -- imagine that! The Media, as a whole, is acting negligent and irresponsible and has an obligation and a duty to inform the public and question all options. Not a duty to stay silent, like they did after 911, and we got into a war that should never have been. It was not racial that skewed the voting total, as Obama has broad appeal to all races, sexes and ages. May be the so called intelligentsia would like us to believe that so we cannot see the truth. They keep questioning and saying -- even the exit polls when we ask people said Obama was ahead. What went wrong? We can bring up questions and scenarios and ask can a computer hijack an airplane? Of course. Can a computer hack/change votes? Most Definitely! Now they are having a debate over ID Cards when the debate should be about how to have a voting system the people can believe in. INCREDULOUS! WILL THE MEDIA FAIL US AGAIN?
It is amazing that John Edwards is all but shunned by every mainstream source of media and political hack. Every article that appears anywhere, barely mention his involvement. It seems to us, that the press is attempting to position the two beatable Democratic candidates,(an African American and a woman), to ensure that for the next four years we have another Republican in the White House. The treatment of John Edwards candidacy is disgusting. He clearly wins the debates and yet he receives no press. He succinctly defines his positions which run afoul of the status quo. Clinton and Obama are very uninspiring...very beatable. Another four years of eroding civil rights and "manufactualizing" of the truth! Wonderful!!
Agree #18. Stay positive everyone. Kerry shouldn't be hated as much as he is. I predict Kennedy will go with Clinton as he is more a part of the nat'l dem establishment. I say go Obama!!!
Barrack Obama is a fake he is a phony you can see that when he does his speeches guy's like him are all talk and no show . He is in experienced and by the way he supports where ever he thinks he is going to get votes. I think Hilary will win the next general election and she is a much better person than him at least she doesn't conceal her religion like Mr Hussein Barrack OBAMA
I'm surprised at all the vitriol toward Kerry. I was never a particular fan, but except for some questionable republican tactics in Ohio (and perhaps elsewhere), he might well be president today. It was a tight, down-to-the-wire election... his second place finish still got him more votes than anyone else had ever gotten before 2004. I don't see the campaign as having been such a disaster.
WHO Cares
Why do we even care what Kerry says? Let's focus on 2008, forget about 2004- that's ancient history now.
If you would like a new "Second Lieutenant fresh out of "OCS" (Officer Candidate School) to lead you into combat, then Obama is your man! Remember, John Kerry is a ""Decorated Viet Nam War Hero" right ? (or so he says). The Obama rhetoric sounds good, but what IS Obama's plan and what has he actually done? The next President will have his or her hands full, cleaning up the mess that we now have ("Thank You", Messrs Bush and Cheney). I do not think that I want to back a "Laboratory Experiment". Sorry, I am an "Educated Viet Nam Era Veteran (Male) and I am supporting Hillary!
Maybe Kerry fell in love with Obama's silky-smooth voice...ooh baby.
Read me a bedtime story, Barack. He's not so bad, but Kerry's irrelevant.
I'd vote for a candidate that can help bloggers and commenters with their atrocious grammar and spelling. That would be a start. My God, people, I don't even know what you are trying to say half the time! Edit yourself, please.
Bacalove: breathe into a paper bag or something.
Ellen , number 22. You say Obama is"not from this country?" Sorry you are totally ignorant, of course he is from this country..or is anyone that is not white a foreigner to you?
Regarding Edwards...he has campaigned on labor and poverty and in both Iowa and NH he lost poor poeple and union members to Obama. Edwards message is not resonating. Support Obama so we can end the dynanstic politics of Bush and Clinton.
Obama borrows from Edwards and Hillary borrows from Edwards. The press doesn’t seem to catch on. During the NH debate Edwards spoke about how personal the run for president was to him. A couple of days later Hillary spoke about how personal this election was to her. I haven’t seen one single thing in the news media that noticed that perhaps Hillary got that playbook from Edwards. He can’t even get attention to what he says when he’s on TV. I’m for Edwards but the celebrity candidates have more money and those with deep pockets running ahead just looks like more of the same to me instead of change. It isn’t likely that corporations are going to be donating to the Edwards campaign either. Come to think of it the news media is dominated by corporations.
Anyone who thinks that Edwards expected an endorsement from Kerry is not looking at the facts. They lost together. Edwards did little to help Kerry's cause, especially his dreadful performance in the debate against Dick Cheney. He basically sat back and watched Cheney talk. I wonder why he didn't take his skills as a lawyer and make them work instead of going silent.
Edwards has lost his place as the motivational candidate to Obama. In modern elections, you lose and you're out. Edwards is so 2004.
JK dont do it, dont lower yourself to the level of this phoney.
Excuses like "Bill took liberties with my words' What would JFK and Martin Luther King think?
Obama be a Man at least admit that you got whooped by a teary woman and not by Bill. Oprah would probably get it.
Obama now sounds a lot like the rhyme and prose preacher that he really is an apologist for maybe "Hope" and "Change".
Did I just hear something go BANG ? Did John Kerry take another fall? Oh, now I remember he just did another FLIP- FLOP.
re# 14 - Exactly!
re # 16 - seriously?!
Obama is impressive. He is what we need to make the changes in the 21st century. Actually, I wish Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama will be on the same ticket when the primaries are over. Both of them are very, impressive indeed. So, Democratics we are fortunate to have such outstanding candidates.
So, be grateful and suport the party. The next President will have a lot of work to do. He or she will need all the help they can get after the mess of the Bush administration.
The only endorsement I pay attention to is the anti-american Boston Globe. You go one way, I go the other.
bacalove,
This mumbo jumbo about "secret weapon that the Powers that Be have used to render Obama 2nd in the NH primary is preposterous. You don't think the vote total was racially skewed due to race, because the majority of Iowas white folks stood up and voted for Obama. Remember that the independents mostly supported McCain, so that left mostly Democrats to spread the vote between Clinton, Obama and Edwards. In the first Caucus perhaps the white people did not want to be labeled as racist so they said openly they would support Obama. Then in New Hampshire they had to go behind a curtain so they could have really voted how they wanted so thatno one knows exactly who the voter selected. There is no denying that Obama gives great speeches, but when he is in a debate not fluent in his delivery of the answers. Although we need a deliverer in these critical times, voters are beginning to examine the candidates more fully before they make decisions.
John Kerry blew his own election. I would never vote for any candidate because of certain endorsements and that would go for Oprah also. I want Hillary Clinton. Her campaign is now on track. Let her record stand for who she is and what she can do. She is the most qualified to lead this country now. I am sure Obama will be president but not now. He is charismatic and has that super star appeal. But he is not ready to be president. I continue to have my doubts about Obama. If it is too good to be true then reason tells you to move cautiously.
Kerry - another irrelevant voice from the bluest of all states, Taxachusetts.
PS - Deval - stop campaigning and get back here and cut govenment spending. Ballooning budget deficit in progress.
PPS - Don't Re-elect Anyone.
When will Kerry do something for the American people and just shut the heck up. He's everywhere else but in Massachusetts helping those who elected him.
JOHN KERRY is doing this for his own personal self-interest and self-preservation. Wait till you see and here more about the man who is challenging him in the primary. The activists are flocking to him, stay tuned....
I was with Barack, but it seems like the old-boy network is getting behind him which is really disheartening. I really felt that Obama was the going to be the change. The only thing that has changed is the game, and if that's the case, I am sticking with someone who knows how to fight, Hillary Clinton.
John Kerry should be beat in the primary in 2008. If you want change let your voice be heard.
A little Civics lessons for Eileen B.; You HAVE to be from this country in order to be elected President. Obama is as American as you or me.

Please tell what great experience Hillary has? Are we really counting years as First Lady as experience? C'mon people. The "Obama has no experience" card is just a polticial ploy. He has plenty of life experience and judgement to be president. Several great american presidents have had less experience than Obama.

What country is he from Eileen if he isnt from America? His father if from Africa, his mother, Kansas. He was raised here despite living in another country for 4, yes 4 of his almost 50 years and even that was when he was elementary school age. EDUCATE YOURSELF!!!
Mike said:
"I think Hilary will win the next general election and she is a much better person than him at least she doesn't conceal her religion like Mr Hussein Barrack OBAMA
"
I dont know what to say about Mike's comment because it absolutely defies all DISCERNABLE logic. What have you personally seen to make you believe he is any particular religion? His name have you confused? I submit to you that the Bush name during WWII was to be more feared via the outright financing of the Nazi machine than any Barrack, Hussein, or Obama ever was and that name continues to profit from war against people who have done nothing to any American. Their crime, the unfortunate happenstance to be born in a country named Iraq. EDUCATE YOURSELF!!!!
Personally, I think that John Edwards is the candidate who best articulates the direction I would like to see this country go but it appears, at least periphally, that he doesnt have a chance because his message isnt being heard in the overall scheme of things due to the money being spent by the 2 democratic frontrunners..
Having said that, these 2 comments blatantly detail what's really wrong with this country and its electorial process. It is the absolute willful ignorance of the electorate. Because we choose to not educate ourselves about a candidate we are subject to the swaying of the ignorants like Faux News and the Glen Becks of this world who tell us that Obama is a muslim who isnt from this country.
Those who choose to ignore the past are destined to repeat it and we are going to be royally screwed if we allow the current direction of this country continue on. Wake up people, drop your biases and stop believing everything you hear, EDUCATE YOURSELVES!!!
john edwards is a fraud.
Notably, by far the majority of comments on this story are negative. Unless Edwards backers like myself got some kind incentives for commenting, (and I for one did not) I'd say there's a groundswell of support for John Edwards under way. That would please me greatly, as I believe Mr. Edwards gives voice to the concerns of average Americans and reflects their interests more than do other candidates.
Face it, an endorsement from Kerry at this point is the kiss of death. I hope all the shows have him on to drone on and on about how much he's like Obama.
#30 - I think "Laboratory Experiment" is a little extreme, though possibly the funniest insult in this blog.
I think some are still heartbroken over the loss Bush as I still see Kerry bumperstickers on lots of cars in my town. Regardless, I hope the endorsement helps. Everyone is getting behind Obama because he represents an American spirit we haven't seen in a long while - leaders with integrity. On the other hand, the Clintons' sour-grapes reaction after the Iowa caucus was disappointing (their negative attacks on Edwards and Obama were misleading at best. Not according to me, but according to fact-checkers who are following the campaign.) Initially I was a Clinton supporter but quickly saw that she was less than honest.
I can no longer get behind someone who puts politics first and leadership second(including saying anything to sway people against your opponents). People from all backgrounds love Obama because he's more of a leader than a politician and has resisted returning the negativity.
Thanks John Kerry!
Obama / Kerry ticket = money
Kudos to Sen. Kerry for seeing the real candidate of change. Hillary Clinton brings nothing to the table but arrogance, pretension, and polarization. Only hardened Democrats will vote for her in a general election, but any Republican that opposes her will instantly snatch up each and every swing voter. People, look at Clinton's "unfavorable" rating! That shockingly high number is not something that the pollsters have botched for an entire year, but a real phenomena. Come November, the Bush/Clinton dynasty will be a thing of the past.
i smell a V.P. running mate in the making...
My wife and I, along with many close friends, compaigned many long hours, days and nights for the Kerry/Edwards Campaign in 2004. We were all very disappointed when Mr. Bush and his associates "stole" the election. We worked so hard, not for Kerry, but because John Edwards was on the ticket.
How embarrased and sorry we are now for all that effort but how thankful we are now that our efforts did not get this Hypocrite John Kerry elected as president. He has really shown his true colors in playing Washington D.C. Politics. Sacrificing his VP running mate John Edwards to Endorse Obama shows his scheming plans of possibly kissing a more likely candidate's rear end for potential future political gain. Obama can never get our votes because of this endorsement and now we believe that all the negative stories we heard about John Kerry are possibly true. Shame on you JOhn Kerry. We hope you lose your state's support for your present office.
You True Americans...lol time and time again you show your true colors. You dont mind any color of race serving your nation when its time to fight. This is getting crazy. I was just waiting for the time when you would use the most ridiculous of excuses to discredit someone not white. Id honestly rather you just say you cant vote for a black man than reach for the clouds looking for points to back up your blatent racsim, since It obvious you and the media there cant get over color. Are you really serious? What else do you have going for you? With all the white americans you have had running things lately its no wonder why you've fallen behind in so many categories in the world. Your reign as world power leader is riding on this election. If you keep doing the same things you get the same results. You would be telling the world so many things if you elected someone who is and looks different but loves your country. I wonder how long you are going to send bad messages to peole whos skin color is different
that they will never be good enough. You can fight for this country, you can be just as articulate and educated but we will never get over your skin color. Than your country is in grave danger from the inside out.
John Kerry is a has been he just wants to see his face on the news tell him to go home and kiss up to his rich wife. we dont need his opponion or his advice.
Obama’s efforts to connect to the Republican Party, specifically Bush, and Dick Chaney, of the Halliburton Company, dates back to the Presidents Grandfather, Prescott Bush, and indeed Chaney was once an executive officer of Halliburton.
The American military pounds Iraq with Artillary, bombs, and the like, destroying large sections of cities, and infra-structures, then Halliburton comes in to rebuild. Halliburton and Halliburton associated companies have raked in ten’s of billions.
Obama is just like the BIG HALIBURTAN. Haliburton has contracted to build detention centers in the U.S. similiar to the one in Quantanammo Bay, Cuba. Halliburton does nothing to earn the Two Dollars for each meal an American Serviceman in Iraq eats.
http://www.halliburtonwatch.org/
Halliburton was scheduled to take control of the Dubai Ports in The United Arab Emiirate. The deal was canceled when Bush was unable to affect the transfer of the American Ports.
Now we see what some might suspect as similiar financial escapading from the Democrats.
Two years ago, Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity gave a $50 million contract to a start-up security company - Companion- owned by now-indicted businessman (TONY REZKO) Tony Rezko and a onetime Chicago cop, Daniel T. Frawley, to train Iraqi power-plant guards in the United States. An Iraqi leadership change left the deal in limbo. Now the company, Companion Security, is working to revive its contract.
Involved along with Antoin “Tony” Rezco, long time friend and neighbor of Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama, and former cop Daniel T. Frawley, is Aiham Alsammarae. Alsammarae was accused of financial corruption by Iraqi authorities and jailed in Iraq last year before escaping and returning here.

Recently, Obama's campaign staff have been vetted by the IRS to disclose his connection to the criminal money generating underworld. Besides, his connections to the REZCO MAFIA types, his up-coming tax fraud charges — Obama needs to disclose why he is a MUSLIM "PATWANG-FWEEE" and disclose Obama's MUSLIM Farrakhan mob connection to Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Its minister, and Obama's spiritual adviser, is the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. In 1982, the church launched Trumpet Newsmagazine; Wright's daughters serve as publisher and executive editor. Every year, the magazine makes awards in various categories. Last year, it gave the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award to a man it said "truly epitomized greatness." That man is Louis Farrakhan. Farrakhan and Chicago's Trinity United Church are trumpeting Barack Obama AKA Barack Hussein Obama as the second coming of the messiah. Obama should stop suppoting our intervention in IRAQ. THE SPEECH --
The Apologia has arrived and once again the self-indicting, separatist-racist Barack Obama AKA Barack Hussein Obama, promises to heal the wounds of the world. The speech is the rude awakening of mass messianism of his campaign. Apologetically, Obama the MUSLIM double-cross X-boX-BorraX has an astonishingly empty two-prawn echelon explanation of his misjudgment.
In the first prawn: with regard to his connection to separatist-racist Rev. Wright; Obama summons voodoo and juju to express slavery as beginning and ending with the Rev. Wright.
In the second prawn: Obama's speech takes credit for Ashley's dream. A dream of unity Martin Luther King, Jr. borrowed from Ashley for his historic "I Have A Dream" speech. In Obama's speech, the connective bond Ashley, the elderly black man and Obama's grandmother share; represents Obama's self-indicting rise to the Harvard Yard. For Obama, the grand flag of language is the semi-fore of words, bestowed upon our nation by the messiah-alumni from Harvard. Obama's Swoon-Song Apologia to the nation represents a failed hymn -- a hymn that fails to heal the nation, repair the world, or make this time different than all the rest. Obama's speech is a brilliant failure.
