McCain, Clinton lead in new N.H. poll

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 1, 2008 03:11 PM

John McCain has moved ahead of Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton has widened her lead over Barack Obama, according to a new poll of New Hampshire voters.

The 7News/Suffolk University survey released today says McCain leads among likely Republican voters with 31 percent, ahead of Romney with 25 percent and Rudy Giuliani with 14 percent. Among Democratic voters, Clinton leads 36 percent to 22 percent over Obama, with John Edwards in third with 14 percent.

The poll was conducted Thursday through Monday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.65 percentage points. Other recent polls in New Hampshire have shown closer races on both sides before the Jan. 8 primary.

  1. hillary is not the right candidate to lead the american people. On the
contrary, she would lead America into the worst chaos since America
was discovered, even worse than the great depression of the 30's
Please, don't make thisblunder. P:erhaps Obama is far better than her.

  1. hillary sorry. It's unconceivable to imagine american people choosing the
wrong candidate, especially a nation like Americawhose all previous leaders
were men who, with God's help made America great. Oh, no, don't commit
    such folly.
Perhaps Obama is a better candidate comparatively.

  1. Educate yourself on the REAL Hillary Clinton. You Clintonista "trolls" never stop pushing the most corrupt politician in the country every chance you get. She really has you fooled doesn't she? But we in New York know the REAL Hillary Clinton.
She caters to corporations, lobbyists, foreign money and the list could go on. But hey, if you want to be in bed with the devil go for it. We citizens aren't buying her "change" platform. She only started saying that by copying Sen. Obama, before that it was "Experience" but hey, when that didn't work because people wanted her to DETAIL what so-called experience she has, that cut too close to all her dirty dealings for her comfort so she copied Sen. Obama's message.

We in New York know the REAL Hillary Clinton and it is not pretty picture. A couple of programs she refused to help in New York actually had to appeal to Sen. Obama for emergency funding and you know what? They got it and Sen. Obama did not use it against her, yet she would choose to slam Sen. Obama for what he stated in Kindergarten? And continuing to insinuate via her surrogates that he is Muslin? Yet Sen. Obama did not go personal on her. He only attacks her on the ISSUES yet she chose to say they are personal attacks. Her record speaks for herself. She sides with the CREDIT CARD companies on Bankruptcy even for those who needed to file for bankruptcy due to long term illness, she praises Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, who if you bother to do your research at all, called black Americans "human weeds". The list could go on, but anyone who makes the uninformed, silly remark that she would have "Bill Clinton to help her" votes for her on a silly premise. If she needs the help of a former President, then she isn't capable of doing the job herself alone.

But hey, don't let that stop you. We citizens know EXACTLY all about the Clintons and you can't hide the truth forever.

  1. I can imagine that the American people would elect someone with the lack of any kind of experience that Obama has. He is a smart, likeable man, but come on people the future of the country is at stake in this next election. It is not the time for on the job training. The results could be devastating. It seem that Hillary is not liked enough to be elected. It boils down to the fact that Richardson is the only one that has the experience and likeability to be elected. Take time to give a look at him although the media has decided for you that it must me Hillary or Obama.

  1. The simple fact is that there are too many complications to call this race on either side. It seems to me that Clinton's gain has less to do with her taking Democrats from Obama as McCain taking independents from him. McCain picks up 10% and Obama drops by the same amount--that seems pretty clear to me.

Of course, all sorts of things could shift this race in the next week, most of them having to do with the hard-to-predict Iowa caucuses. It's unlikely that many independents will leave McCain if he doesn't do well there; they tend to be voters who pay attention, I think, and they are probably aware that expectations for him there are low. However, I think Democratic voters could be much more easily drawn to Obama if he wins in Iowa, especially if he does so convincingly. This would be true of Clinton voters, but even more true of Edwards voters, particularly if he does not poll well in Iowa. Seeing his cause as lost, they might defect to Obama as the only chance of averting a Clinton nomination. Of course, as I said above, the caucuses are hard to predict, so there's no point speculating until Thursday. The message, I think, is not to put too much stock in what the polls say about New Hampshire until the results are in in Iowa and the Granite State voters have had a chance to process what's happened in the Midwest.

  1. Yes- it is a hard choice this election- all the Dems are strong. I think Obama is the best choice for Democrats. I hope NH takes a good hard look at Sen. Clinton and Sen. Edwards electability in the general election- they will surely provoke a third party run from Bloomberg. Obama is polling very high with independents nation wide. NH- please- see the big picture.

  1. Hillary is the best Democratic nominee. She is serious, hard working, determined and dedicated to people. Running against McCain would be hard for her but not impossible. Obama would be crushed by McCain and even by other Republican nominee. Obama's presence in this race shifted the focus from discussing real problems to empty propaganda. It is incredible that so many Americans are fooled by this guy.

  1. OBAMA SENSIBLE. SMART. HONEST. JOHN F. KENNEDY. ABE LINCOLN. OPRAH WINFERY. CAME OUT AGAINST WAR FIRST. NOT A FLIP FLOPPER. READY TO LEAD OUR COUNTRY. HEALTH CARE PLAN COVERS EVERYONE AND WORKS, HELPS THE POOR GET HEALTH CARE. FAVORABLE. DOES BETTER AGAINST REPUBLICANS. CHANGE. CHANGE. CHANGE. CHANGE AGENT.
CLINTON. VOTED FOR IRAQ WAR. ACCEPTS MONEY FROM LOBBYISTS, PACS, SPEACIAL INTREST GROUPS. BAD HEALTH CARE PLAN THAT DOSEN'T COVER EVERYONE AND COVERS PEOPLE IN THE WRONG WAY. DOES WORST AGAINST REPUBLICANS. BUSH CLINTON BUSH.... FUCK NO
IF CLINTON WINS NOMINATION I WILL VOTE FOR A INDEPENDENT OR WRITE-IN.
OBAMA 'O8 HE'S MY HOMEBOY, BARACK THE VOTE, BARACK'S HOW I ROLL, BARACK MY WORLD, MY MAMA'S FOR OBAMA.

  1. Senator Clinton did not vote for the Iraq War. She voted for a war on Terrorism. Five years ago this counrty was in a rage after the planes hit the towers, and then the towers collapsed killing thousands of people. Seventy-seven Senators out of one hundred voted for a war on terrorism, but the present administration changed the focus to guarding oil wells in Iraq. Over twenty Senators that voted for the war now opose the war. Senator Clinton is one of them.
If you Obama worshipers, would do your homework, instead of bashing Hillary all the time, you would know that she has worked for the middle class since she graduated college, for children's rights, and healthcare. Your Obama has a health plan that leaves fifteen million people out in the cold. And, he is far from the leader you think he is. While a State Senator in Illinois, he voted 130 times present. He cannot make a stand. One of the bills was to prohibit porn shops in school districts and near churches. That was a no brainer, but he voted present. He could care less about the people he represents.
Through his rhetoric he has pulled the wool over your eyes. The only place he will lead you is down the road to destruction. This country is in the middle of a crises. The last thing we need is Obama in the White House. He would be a deer caught in headlights. He has no experience, no knowlege of foreign policy, and even more important no plan.
A VOTE FOR HILLIARY IS A VOTE FOR AMERICA, A VOTE FOR OBAMA IS GOING TO CREMATE AMERICA.

  1. Hillary is the right candidate for the democratic party. She has experience of foreign affairs which Obama does not have. Unless, you count the fact that Obama lived till age 9 or so in another country!!. What a joke. How many of us can claim to be having foreign affairs experience on that basis.
One can argue anything but please look at the record.

  1. If Hilary wins the ticket and Obama isn't her vice (and maybe even if he is her vice) I will be voting republican for president for the 1st time in my life. So what Obama may make a mistake or two, they can't be any worst than the one's W has made over the last 8 years... such as lying to get his way for war and catering to oil and big business. I'm middle class, I want some one that represents me while protecting the lower classes, I believe Obama is the man. Hillary will be too busy courting large businesses, like W, and serving the lower classes (for future re-election purposes) to care about us poor middle of the road joes that make a decent living but still struggling because the economy and job offshoring is out of control. My dream would be either an Obama/Edwards ticket or Edwards/Obama ticket... anything else and I walk to the other side and I think other Dems will too..

  1. How sad if you jump the Democrat's ship to vote the other party.
Espechially when Obama is gaining Rep. and Ind. votes. In fact, I think they will cross over for several of the Dems.
If you want nothing like W...any Democrat would be the smarter choice.

  1. Hillary Clinton cannot win. Even many democrats find her too jaded. How could she not be? Any Republican will beat her because she carries so much baggage. Can you imagine the "experience" of the country clouded with personal scandal resurrected? And make no mistake, all of it, including Hillary's somewhat admirable "stand by my man" capitulation will be incessant. The country does not want to give anyone the chance to dredge us all through that again, and even Repubs know that will happen. Nominate Hillary and lose. That simple.

  1. hillary switched from supporting universal care to mandatory because the took the health care lobby money. do you think she is the number one recipient of defense money because she's really going to get the troops home her first term ( if you believed any of their three lies in the primary week about that)?? she is hiding behind bill like a cornered shooter holding up a little kid to make a shameless escape. she KNOWS he won NH both terms! she's running scared and too ARROGANT to face it. she hasn't changed a damn thing or even attempted to make any changes to the messages she sends out. this woman is nothing but an overly amibitious political shill.

  1. HILLARY CLINTON IS OUR BEST CHOICE FOR PRESIDENT IN 2008. SHE'S EXPERIENCED AND STANDS FOR CHANGE. OBAMA HAS BEEN A SENATOR FOR ONLY 2 YEARS. HE WASN'T IN THE SENATE FOR THE VOTE ON IRAQ AND MISSED THE VOTE ON IRAN, THE ONLY SENATOR TO MISS IT. HE CAN'T BE TRUSTED. HE IDENTIFIES ONLY AS BLACK. HE WAS RAISED BY HIS WHITE MOTHER AND WHITE GRANDMOTHER. WHY DOES HE NOT TALK ABOUT THAT? HE'S A GOOD ORATOR BUT SAYS NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE. I AM AN INDEPENDENT. HILLARY HAS MY VOTE.
