South Carolina's largest newspaper today endorsed Barack Obama in the Democratic presidential race.
The State in Columbia said that while the policy differences between Obama and Hillary Clinton are "minute," he is more likely to unify the country.
The endorsement is a boost for Obama, coming four days before Saturday's primary, and a blow for Clinton and more so for John Edwards, a native son seeking a strong showing in South Carolina to energize his campaign.
The State endorsed John McCain before his win in South Carolina's Republican primary on Saturday.

SC is black. you only had one option that is obama
He was also just endorsed by Atlanta Journal Constitution, Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson (chairman of the Homeland Security Committee), Virginia Congressman Rick Boucher and Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. The Clintons are alienating millions with their divisive Karl Rove tactics and this is part of the blowback.
Thankfully, the newspaper is able to see the Clintons' power tricks and to come on the side of equity and what is best for our beloved country. This is a dangerous precedent to have an ex-President in our democracy lie and smear a candidate in order to get his WIFE elected and himself back in the WH. We need more excellent judgment as shown by The State in Columbia. Where is the NYT and the Washington Post on this travesty and nepotism in relationship to our precious Constitution?
I had enough of Bill and hope he and hilary will walk away gracefully with class. I guessed bill and hilary turn themself into carl rove who they hate the most.
The choice is becoming more clear each day: more of same cynical, angry, dirty politics, or a new politics that unifies, clarifies, and inspires.
Obama has the lead in delegates, and the lead in momentum. If he keeps taking the high road, he will be the next President.
Obama is most likely to unite the country, the congress and the Senate. The Clinton will split the Democratic party and the country and nothing will get done for 4 years. If she is elected, Hillary will arrive on day one in Washington DC with her historical baggage and start the most contentious presidency in history. She wasn't exactly popular in Washington DC when Bill was the President. We need a President that can inspire us and unite us to face perhaps the most challenging years ahead for the US.
Dear amirkhan:
1) African Americans only represent 30% of the entire population in South Carolina. South Carolina is 68% caucasian. (http://www.census.gov/popest/states/asrh/tables/SC-EST2005-03-45.csv)
2) African Americans don't only choose among African American candidates. Hillary, in fact, was more popular among black voters than Barack Obama during most of the campaign.
I think many African American voters are supporting Obama in part now to punish Hillary for injecting race into the campaign.
Good. Fifty-percent plus one politics will not work. We need a President that the Republicans will at least tolerate, if not vote for. Obama has seized on the fact that the country, both rich and poor, are demanding a monumental change in too many things to describe in this forum. When Clinton talks of change, she could mean just going back to what we did in the nineties. That isn’t good enough. The United States deserves better. I deserve better. That’s why I have to stand up for Barack Obama. I hope others will find this as obvious as I do.
In Barack Obama, you currently have the most definitive man in American politics since JFK, and its not just America that needs him right now, It's the whole world.
If Obama looses this campaign, it will be because black people have forgotten the huge struggle of many generations, to overcome against all odds.
Black people need to stand up, because only dead fish swim with the stream, and that’s just what the Clintons want.
Clinton is not focussing on South Carolina. She is looking at all the Feb 5th states. This endorsement does not materially change anything. Though there are lot of Clinton bashers, I love her toughness and focus on issues. I am hoping people will look at who can actually deliver and vote. Clinton, You go girl!!

The Honorable John R. Edwards
410 Market Street
Suite 400
Chapel Hill, NC 27516
Dear Senator Edwards:
It was good meeting with you yesterday and discussing my father's legacy. On the day when the nation will honor my father, I wanted to follow up with a personal note.
There has been, and will continue to be, a lot of back and forth in the political arena over my father's legacy. It is a commentary on the breadth and depth of his impact that so many people want to claim his legacy. I am concerned that we do not blur the lines and obscure the truth about what he stood for: speaking up for justice for those who have no voice.
I appreciate that on the major issues of health care, the environment, and the economy, you have framed the issues for what they are - a struggle for justice. And, you have almost single-handedly made poverty an issue in this election.
You know as well as anyone that the 37 million people living in poverty have no voice in our system. They don't have lobbyists in Washington and they don't get to go to lunch with members of Congress. Speaking up for them is not politically convenient. But, it is the right thing to do.
I am disturbed by how little attention the topic of economic justice has received during this campaign. I want to challenge all candidates to follow your lead, and speak up loudly and forcefully on the issue of economic justice in America.
From our conversation yesterday, I know this is personal for you. I know you know what it means to come from nothing. I know you know what it means to get the opportunities you need to build a better life. And, I know you know that injustice is alive and well in America, because millions of people will never get the same opportunities you had.
I believe that now, more than ever, we need a leader who wakes up every morning with the knowledge of that injustice in the forefront of their minds, and who knows that when we commit ourselves to a cause as a nation, we can make major strides in our own lifetimes. My father was not driven by an illusory vision of a perfect society. He was driven by the certain knowledge that when people of good faith and strong principles commit to making things better, we can change hearts, we can change minds, and we can change lives.
So, I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter. As a friend and a believer in my father's words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud.
Sincerely,
Martin L. King, III
I wish folks would talk about how Hillary has been LYING in order to berate another democratic candidate. The stuff that has been coming out of her campaign and from her husband sound like Cheney tactics!!
If she wins the nomination, she won't make it in November. I cannot cope with another 4 years of lying!! Hopefully, a majority of americans will also demand a higher standard of integrity then what we have seen in her...
If Obama or Edwards win, I will vote democratic in November. If Clinton wins, I will not.

Our X President did a lot for the cause of Minorities. I think its insulting to use these divisive tactics and think that is all minorities are interested in hearing.
Its the economy and health care that draws right attention. we will never hear their plans if all the focus is on arguing and telling the "truth." (Heard that before?)
I am being turned off with this side tracking of the issues.
The other side of the ilse must really love this.

"When Clinton talks of change, she could mean just going back to what we did in the nineties"
When Obama talks of change I have no clue of what type of change. All I ever seem to hear from him is "woo change change change" or "We can! We can! We Can!"
I love change but I rather support a candidate where I know what I am getting. Not a candidate who gets young people enthusiastic but really doesn't talk issues unless he has to. And his health care plan is inferior to both Hillary's and Edward's.

I am happy you have endorsed Barack Obama. After years of supporting the Clintons, they have turned me off completely. Barack is trying to sell the consumers(voters) a sparkling, fresh, new product. Billary is trying to sell us a load of lies. You would think that with all the lies they have told in the past and now,no one in America would trust them. Bill's rhetoric is tearing the Democratic party apart. I have heard life long Democrats say they will not vote for Billary because of how they have conducted themselves in this campaign. I myself doubt very highly I would vote for Billary. Senator Kennedy, you need to take Bill to Maine for a vacation and give him a swiftboat in the a##! You are the party elder, please calm the boy down!!

Dear America, It is time to turn the page!
The reason I am so passionate and enthusiastic about my Senator, Barack Obama is because I believe in my heart, mind and soul that he is the BEST candidate, presently, to bring the American people together, unify our country, work with Republicans, Democrats and Independents, as well as represent America to the rest of the world. It is time to turn the page in history and set a new tone in Washington, D.C. and the way our government plays a role in our lives.
Obama is the LONGEST elected official in the democratic primary, serving for 11 years in the state and federal senate. He believes that education is an investment in our future and is willing to make community colleges free for our citizens. Obama believes the government should impose fines on corporations that pollute greenhouse gases, then using that money to provide “green” or environmental friendly jobs to urban and rural communities. This plan is the best long-range plan to boost our nation’s economy, create jobs and discover energy alternatives.
It is time to turn the page. Lets move forward, putting fear and uncertainty behind us. It is time to truly be the UNITED states of America!
OBAMA for PRESIDENT 2008!!
Obama also supports Veterans Housing, physical and mental health care for veterans. He believes in diplomacy, before quickly moving to war without all the facts. Obama was against the war in Iraq when it was unpopular. Obama is for the working and middle-class family. He will put $4,000 towards each college student’s first year tuition. These are some of the MANY reasons I support Sen. Obama.
