Obama, Huckabee lead in last Iowa poll

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 3, 2008 12:43 PM

In the final poll before Iowans caucus tonight, Barack Obama leads among Democrats and Mike Huckabee among Republicans.

The Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby tracking poll released today gives Obama the support of 31 percent of likely Democratic caucus-goers, ahead of John Edwards with 27 percent and Hillary Clinton at 24 percent. Bill Richardson was fourth with 7 percent, and Joe Biden next with 5 percent.

On the GOP side, Huckabee leads with 31 percent, widening his edge over Mitt Romney, who has 25 percent. Fred Thompson, with 11 percent, has passed John McCain for third place. McCain is now tied with Ron Paul for fourth at 10 percent, according to the poll.

The tracking survey combines polling from Sunday through Wednesday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points for each party.

  1. Posting poll results like this is irresponsible. You should post the number of people polled and the number responding to the poll in addition to the margin of error. In addition, you're not posting new poll results, you're simply tabulating the results from Sunday through _yesterday_.

  1. I am really hoping for a Barack Obama Versus Mike Huckabee showdown. Both are excellent speakers who are very charismatic which would make their debates very interesting to watch.

Mitt is about as interesting when he speaks as cold otmeal is to eat.

  1. I totally despise when people presumptuously and ignorantly denounce the character and integrity of a candidate. Oh, they did this wrong, or they did that wrong. Since when did we lose track of intention? Of the fact that we are human? Of the fact that, our past isn't perfect just as theirs are not perfect? Come on America, let US have some integrity, and vote someone who "GET'S THE PROBLEM" in America. There are two candidates who UNDERSTAND, who admit they aren't perfect, and who care about you, even if you don't speak fondly of them. Mike Huckabee primarily, and Barack Obama. I'm ALSO Hoping for a showdown between them.

  1. Go Mitt!! It seems many have an interesting definition of honor and integrity. I respect someone who admits they made an error in judgement and has the courage to make a change. I worry about those who have a different position depending on the group or day of the week. Governor Romney lives by the principles that made this country great and will lead us that way again. He has the gift to gain consensus among both parties. Do we really want change for the better? The we better put a person in the White House who can work with both parties to effect that change. Mitt Romney is that person!!!

  1. I'd like to know when Obama voted against the war in Iraq? He continuously brings up that Clinton was for it and he was against it but since the war started in 2003 and he didn't get elected until 2004 he would have never had a chance to vote. I'm against the war also but if I didn't have a say I'd have to keep that out of my campaign. Aside from the fact that he doesn't have much experience in domestic issues or foreign issues or many other things. Sure he's very charismatic and he speaks well but that doesn't make a good President.

Then again, Bush had no charisma and couldn't speek at all and he had 8 years and look what he did.

Lord, we are in deep poop.

  1. Well, JAW and other Bush lovers, I would like to see the soldiers who have died and the innocent Iraqis killed during Bush's war, receive THEIR lives back. They have had something stolen from them; paying taxes is your civic responsibility. Thankfully, Barack Obama understands where the real priorities lie.

  1. Obama vs. Huckabee is the best thing for America. Two genuine people with stark ideological differences. Neither is a "company man" and both have strong grass roots support.

Of course, since neither is their party's darling, I fear that it will be the same old, same old come November: Clinton vs. Guiliani.

Or will McCain surprise everyone because he is the only one to remain faithful to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan? Now they are saying that "staying the course" is resulting in the tide turning in our favor.

If Obama and Huckabee win, I want to see HBO sponsor an UFL cage match between Oprah and Chuck Norris!

  1. The only good thing about an Obama vs. Huckabee presidential race will be that it will polarize the race and open the door for a centrist like Bloomberg to run and actually have a small but decent shot at winning. Bloomberg is exactly the 'doer' we need in office at this point. Some that has proven his bi-partisanship and a resolve to help the poor, middle class, and the rich alike. He gets things done quickly, efficiently, and without listening to other peoples' check books (because everyone knows he doesn't need the money).

  1. I have seen negative campaigning before and understand how that can be non-productive but what Governor Romney has done is not negative campaigning. When you use the facts to point out someone's record, is that negative campaigning or informing people of the real candidate? Let's face it, we conservative republicans have certain principles we live by. What I have seen Mr. Huckabee do is say he is not going to do something and then do it. ("Negative" Romney ad) So who has more integrity, he who points out the facts or he who says he won't negative campaign and does it anyway? I know who my vote goes to. Mitt Romney. An honest and honorable man. By the way Obama-ites, youth doesn't necessarily mean change for the better. What has Obama done that is significant anyway???

  1. Anyone that compares Clinton to Bush is unrealistic -

Clinton may have been morally wrong for breaking his vows however this is now done on a daily basis in this country. I am not saying it is right however it happens so frequently.

Bush on the other hand is not only barely literate however blatantly lied to this country over and over - I am not sure how many different reasons he gave for invading Iraq as I stopped counting at ten. It is ok to stick to your beliefs however when you are running a country those beliefs have to based on some facts. This is the only reason that Huckabee cannot be President as he believes the Bible is literally true - I don't know whether it is or isn't but there are certainly no facts to back it up and thus it should play no part in running this country.

Frankly, I dislike all of the candidates as none are genuine. Besides a few core differences i.e gay marriage, abortion etc. things for the middle class usually remain the same regardless of what party is in office. I think the change we need is one of competence rather than a particular party.

    I have faith.

When not distracted (American Idol, Fear Factor, Homeland Security threat level Orange) the American people are very intuitive. We will make the right choice from the left side of the aisle.

  1. Aurora, Aurora, Aurora...tsk tsk.

First, unfortunately soldiers die in battles; if we were worried about that, we would still be loyal British subjects. Soldiers know when they sign up in a VOLUNTEER armed forces that they can be put in harms way. Yes, it is sad, but no matter who was in the White House, I think American desire to make someone pay for 9/11 would have driven the same outcome. Could it have been better managed? Yes!

Second, paying more taxes as a percent of my income than another citizen is my civic duty?? I went to grad school, took risks, invested, worked my butt off, and I should pay more taxes than someone else because I succeeded in life? No! And this has always been where the Socialist Democrats just do not get it. Why is France such an economic weakling? The same thinking as you. Civic responsibility indeed! Start a company, make good, high-paying job, create wealth - THAT is my civic responsibility instead of letting people suckle at the government teet.

McCain is the best in the race but seeing as how people in Iowa want to keep the price of food high for poor people just so they can keep their ethanol subsidie vote for Huck and destroy the "panderer in chief" Romney. He would seriously sell his children's souls to win the election and then say he has always advocated for selling children's souls if it would get him votes. Seriously folks, I will take Huck's religious beliefs over Rommney's lack of any core beliefs whatsoever.

Men have run this country for over 200 years and we are now in deep trouble, it is time a woman takes the helm and give the men a rest. Hillary has the brains and the guts to run this vast empire, so let us give her a chance. It is time, really way past the time, the United States has a woman, a really smart woman, a learned women to direct this nation to becoming all we used to be. Respected, envied, and even trusted. Not any more. When Hillary was first lady, she went through hell with the attacks from the republicans. She is tough and she forgave her husband which I would imagine most republicans would honor. So she deserves your vote, period. D.Kraemer

  1. I'm a Hispanic, A Democrat and an ex military enlistee. I am however voting for McCain for president. He will not tell you sweet lies to get elected. This man when his country called on him served with honor. He was a prisoner of war in Vietnam and when it was time for him to be released because of the fact that he was the son of an Admiral, chose to stay on as a prisoner and not jump ahead of anyone. He lingered on in those rotten jungles because he's a rightious man, unlike all the candidates we have and a lot of our elected officials especially Bush with cozy assignments made available by dad and Chaney with one college deferment after the other. It's easy for candidates to say a lot of stuff. McCain proved he will not throw us into war unless this country is in danger.

    A. Keep us out of World War III
    B. Help America regain its once- great international standing.
There are three possibilites who I see as having a chance, and who will not run the country based on their "gut feelings" and flawed logic stemmig from mythology and superstition. Mccain, Clinton, Obama.

  1. Hillary Clinton will win the party's nomination, without a doubt. She's the most qualified person and she has the best leadership qualities neccessary to guide this country through the fog of war. I think Mike Huckabee will win in Iowa. I think eventually he will win the Republican nomination. Good for him. Good for America. I'm glad. We'll see if a blatantly ultra-conservative Bible-thumper who wants prayer in our schools can be elected in this country. I don't think he can. People like him threaten the democratic and secular values the Founding Fathers established in this country. These were men of the Enlightenment, not Bible-thumpers. They did not want religious tyranny in the highest levels of government, as was the case throughout Eurpoean history. Bush has damaged the wall that separates church and state. Huckabee will tear it down. Vote Hillary in 2008 and restore the values our Founding Fathers established in this country!

  1. If you want to vote for Hillary Clinton, DON'T vote for her because she is a female and/or the wife of Bill Clinton. Vote for her stance on the issues. It is like voting for George W. Bush because his father was President. If you take name recognition into the equation, we're in trouble. It is lazy politics.

Barack has built himself up despite being a no name state senator 4 years ago. Heck his name alone could've freaked out people who don't research their candidates (Barack Hussein Obama). But no, in fact he has surged and created a strong and loyal following, which includes people from all spectrums of the country. He isn't picked because he is black, he is picked because he gives us the best opportunity for change.

If you don't agree with his politics fine, just don't vote for name recognition or for race/gender.

No way! So what experience is she talking about? Sounds like alot of CRAP to me. And yet most Americans buy every word she says. How do you think she'll pay for that "Free Health Care"? You all fell for the Bush agenda and now that our country is in a major crisis in every area possible you want to waste your vote on an egotistical inexperienced person. WAKEUP AMERICA! The country is in Major TROUBLE! Stop getting fooled by the “rhetoric”, and party line vote! Please choose the right person who has the proper experience whether you personally like them or not. It will take someone who has “the total package” to turn this country around. As a footnote Oprah Winfrey should be ashamed of herself making this a Presidential race based on race. She said her support for Barack Obama is not a vote against anyone else. I will tell you what her vote is for ……….. “An Afro-American. Why else would such a “SMART” and “Powerful” businesswoman even take a chance on an inexperienced person when our country clearly needs someone who can bring a total package of experience and common sense to the Presidency! SHAME ON YOU OPHRA WINFREY for manipulating your viewers to vote for “YOUR BIASED” choice. Americans should boycott her television show! Do anyone of you really think Ophra would let Barack Obama manage her company and her billions of dollars? I bet she wouldn’t! Nothing personal against Barack Obama, but he is NOT what our country needs. Please everyone, be sensible with your votes. Ask yourselves who Our American Troops would want leading out county. After all they are the ones risking their lives for our freedom. Be smart about it!

I have to ask What, Why and Where? Your ideals are tired and old. Go back to the
1800's with that attitude. The whole country should not give a damn about age, sex, race, religion. The purpose of this election process is to take a majority vote.
Everyone should take everything that you hear, and see into account. The scariest thing for me is that in a way I agree, even being a White person. I am scared that people do not take an imformative view of what they believe is the best person. I still do not know who I am going to vote for. Yet I read, listen and watch everything that I can get my hands on. Please whatever you do.....Think!!!! This affects not just you but potentially the whole world. 8 years ago, I as a republican "threw" my vote away. I refused to vote for Bush, nor Gore. Didn't quite like either. This was a hot topic at family gatherings 1/2 are devout Republicans and 1/2 are devout Democrats. My biggest concern and I stated this was that "we would be at war within Bush's first two years" We weren't quite at war withing the first 2 years, but within his first term we were. Please I beg of everyone that sees this page and reads these comments. Think, be informed and make a wise choice.

"Go Mitt!! It seems many have an interesting definition of honor and integrity. I respect someone who admits they made an error in judgement and has the courage to make a change. I worry about those who have a different position depending on the group or day of the week."

Are you kidding??? It appears that YOU are the one with the "interesting definition of honor and integrity," because MITT is the one that has had "different positions depending on the group or day of the week." HE is the one that has changed nearly every one of his views depending on whether he was running for office in liberal MA or running to get votes from conservatives in a republican primary. I mean, seriously, Mitt is the phoniest candidate in a loooong time, and that is saying something. He makes John Kerry look like the rock of Gibraltar as far as policy positions are concerned.

Speaking of Senator Kerry, did you vote for him?? Oh, no, I am sure you did not because he "flip-flopped" too much, right? But Mitt, he is honorable and full of integrity because he conveniently changes his mind on every topic depending on what office he is seeking. Puh-leeaze. The Mitt who ran for office in MA was for gun control, gay rights and for abortion choice. NOW....while he is running for theRepublican presidential nominee, he is suddenly an avid "life time hunter" (! ... HA) and NRA member, wants to ban gay marriage, and outlaw all abortions. As the "Church Lady" from Saturday Night Live used to say: How Conveeeenient!

have nothing to do with race either. I am about as Southern as one can be

Study Islam very closely and I would wager that most others would change their voting Ideals also. Who will finally end up as his running mate. Clinton or Al Sharpton. Maybe some Muslim Cleric ? 1. OBAMA '08

What has Obama done? He judged in late 2002, just before the Senate was to vote on HJ Res what the consequences of inavding Iraq would be accurately and hauntingly correct. For those who haven't read his speech, look it up.

We need judgment in these turbulent times and the Senator from Illinois presents a similar choice for the nation as when some years ago another upstart from Illinois, a one-term congressman went on to become one of our greatest presidents. So too now do we have a chance to elect a transformational figure in American politics.

  1. Here is the summary:
Hillary - No experience but riding the coat tails of an adulterer - NO
Obama - One good speech at the Democratic convention, then nothing. - NO
Edwards - Slimey crap eating twerp that should be with his wife during her cancer - NO
Huckabee - Bible thumper - NO
Giuliana - Riding 911 til the end - NO
Romney - A snake and liar - NO
McCain - Should have made it over Bush 8 years ago - NO
Thompson - Beat down old dog that may drag himself to NH - NO
Biden, Dodd, Kucinich, Paul, Hunter - None of them will make it another week. - NO
So who does that leave to support? Well at this point it looks like Obama (Democrat) and Huckabee (Republican) will win, lets hope that someone else joins the Presidental race as an independent or another year of voting for the lesser of two evils.

  1. To G.S.S. ,

You are telling the rest of us to "think hard before the vote" and YOU are discounting Obama because of his "islamic background" ??? DO YOUR RESEARCH.

    FACTS:
    * Obama was baptized a Christian, a CHOICE he made later in life. He is a CHRISTIAN.
    * Obama grew up mainly in Hawaii.
    * Obama spent 4 years in Indonesia as a child where he attended two schools: one was muslim-based (but had people of many different religous backgrounds and was NOT fundamentalists), and the other was a CATHOLIC school. Read that again: CATHOLIC school
    * OBAMA IS A CHRISTIAN

Like you said, "think hard before the vote", a lot harder than you have been so far.

  1. There is a real reason Obama has captured the attention of so many when the odds, in the beginning, were so against him. It is because he is GENUINE! If you looked at his background, read his books, and paid attention to his actions you would see he is not only genuine but CONSISTENT. That is why he is becoming more and more appealing to the US as a whole. People feel he is in tune with them and their own particular needs and problems. He is the right person for the job. I don't want what past EXPERIENCE has proven to deliver which is "Politics as usual."

  1. Perhaps it might be nice to look at this from a different angle-- differences in their stances on the issues. First and foremost, the democrats are all party liners. That's fine, if you're a democrat. The republicans are all over the place, most of them excessively conservative in one particular spot (huck and religion, mccain and war, romney and immigration), but moderate everywhere else.

So basically, the republicans tend to be slightly more moderate than the democrats. However, some of them can be dangerous. Huckabee, for example, has an extreme religious belief that has been shown to threaten competence in an executive officer.

Anywho, the people all tend to be the same. Huckabee has serious, deep flaws in his past, and the democrats are hoping he'll win the nomination so they can take him out. Hillary is hillary, she polarizes everyone. Giuliani claims he turned new york around, but its obvious to anyone with half a brain that all the cities in America were improving at the same time, and it started before Giuliani became mayor. He did nothing. Ron Paul has some extreme ideas-- leave the UN? Kill the DoEducation? Edwards needs to practice what he preaches. Romney lies. A lot.

However, after this, there are some plusses to some candidates that need to be considered.

Obama: inspiring and inspired, is a strong public speaker with few faults.
    McCain: war record.
    Hillary: experience.

And that's about it for the plusses-- Romney+Giuliani have lied about what they've done-- nothing in particular. Romney actually did organise the winter olympics, but that means little compared to the presidency. Huckabee is Bush all over again-- the country has seen fundamentalism and turned away. What more can it possibly offer? Edwards tried, and failed before. He's had his chance. Paul is crazy. No beating around the bush, Ron Paul seems to think that society will naturally end in order. He is wrong. You can't just take the government out back and shoot it. Then you get Iraq.

My vote is for one of the democrats-- we have gone long enough. There is no point in putting someone in power who will promote a fundamentalist agenda. Bush has done so, and it influenced the rest of his policies to the point of failure.

We don't need another Bush, and that means we need a democrat, or anyone else who directly rejects fundamentalist policies.

NO IT WON'T!! And deep down you know this. If you're young, then maybe you don't know this, but believe me, it's true, nothing will change.

Don't get caught up in all the hoopla and political party competition. Our country needs someone who will put America first, and who will put American's, and "we the people" first.

  1. BEFORE YOU VOTE FOR CLINTON, ASK (and find out)

    1. WHO killed Vince Foster? (Clue: it wasn't Vince) Why was it covered up?
    2. Why was the missing evidence "found" in their closet?

In fact, before you vote, make sure you're voting for someone NOT on the basis of creed, religion, race and ESPECIALLY not gender! Vote your conscience, not your bias.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against a female as president (I personally think that Rice would be ok) but I don't think it's enough to vote for her...especially considering her "checkered" past (and that's putting it NICELY).

Oh, and BTW, YES, I'm in favor of a flat tax, you get taxed a percentage of your earnings, no exceptions. (That's right, NO exceptions...I don't want to hear how you work harder so you deserve to keep more. Horsehocky!)

  1. Mitt Romney is by far the class of the field. His Peraonal & Political life can serve as an example for everyone. Here is a Mormon who has been married over 35yrs to one women; contrasting to Giulani and McCain who need a score to keep track of their marriages. Mitt is calm, cool and collected; unlike McCain who has a bad temper and seriou judgement flaw by alining himself with Russ Feingold on 'campaign reform' by voting against the President's tax cuts and alining with the pro-illegal immigration reformers. He is too impetuous to be President. Mike Huckabee is the king of the one liners akin to Ross Perot, funny but no substance.
Mitt has been successful in everything he got involved in. His major is the way he has raised his family; a credit to himself and his country, strong family values.

You say America needs a woman as president. I couldn't agree more. But Hillary Clinton is neither a woman or a lady. She is an opportunist and will do anything to satisfy her lust for power. Including a public pardon for the cheating husband in her obviously loveless marriage.

If you'd like to elect a qualified woman for president, try Condi Rice, Elizabeth Dole or any number of women who love their country more than themselves.

  1. "A terrorist age?!"

PLEASE! cut the republican fear mongering.

First of all, while their actions are heinous, "terrorists" would not pose a real, physical, threat to America even if a Neadrathal was president. Ever wonder why they're called "TERRORists," not "destructivists?" Because they engage in acts of violence to provoke FEAR, creating a POLITICAL reaction. They're not trying to, nor would they be able to, kill even 1% of the American population. They're trying to get us to react, by engaging in foreign policies which alienate the rest of the world, and give themselves a recruiting base by doing things which make people hate us in the name of "fighting terrorism." They're trying to make us surrender our civil liberties, the cornerstone of American Ideals, in the name of "fighting terrorism." I'm not saying that the terrorist's actions aren't horrible, but the biggest threat that they cause is in how we react to them in the name of "fighting terrorism." And Gore would have been much more sensible in that regard... which is why the majority of Americans voted for him.

Second, Gore realized that morality is based on what is RIGHT, or what HELPS people and prevents them from being unfairly HARMED, not based on what bigoted religious leaders say. That makes him better than Bush any day. As for Clinton, what he did may have violated the public trust, but besides that, he didn't really hurt anyone. Bush has lied to the the American people dozens of times about Iraq, supported the rule of the rich which denies those born into the lower strata of society a realistic opportunity to succeed, no matter how hard they try, and denies people necessary medical care, and locks up the money of many more people who need a hedge against potential medical costs, when that money could be in use getting our economy moving again. I personally support Obama, but the Clinton Bashers drive me nuts.

  1. Kevin H, I already said I don't support Hillary, and I hope Obama wins. But it is just insane that you Clinton haters are just soooooooo obsessed with hating them. You know damn well that the economy did great and we went from a large deficit to a large surplus under Clinton. Now sure, it was because he worked with the Republican congress, but that's the point, he WORKED WITH THEM. Bush took that surplus and turned it into a monstrous deficit. Good job George and the Republicans.

And as far as Bush being such a great leader during war-time....wow, what an absurd statement. 9/11 HAPPENED ON BUSH'S WATCH. Try to blame it on Clinton all you want, Bush could have stepped in and made some serious attacks on Al Qaeda from the first day that he took the office if he wanted to, but he didn't. And he was WARNED that 9/11 might happen. So.....
    * He let 9/11 happen on his watch while he was reading children's stories
    * And then after an initial successful response to 9/11 by bombing the Taliban and Al Q (which let's face it, ANY person on the planet who was president would have made that response. Don't give Bush some unique credit for it. It was an obvious and had-to-do-it response)....
    * Bush absurdly attacked Iraq which had zero to do with 9/11

What is the result of all that??
Our own intel says Al Q is stronger than ever, the Taliban has made a comeback, Osama bin Laden is still alive, Afgahnistan and Pakistan are messier than ever, Iran is stronger than ever, and Iraq will hardly become the democracy we envisioned. And we've spent 1 TRILLION $'s in Iraq, with around 4000 dead soldiers, and 100,000's of dead Iraqis. What a fannnnnn-tastic job by Bush as a leader in the war on terror.

Yeah, "thank God" Gore lost and Bush won, suuuure. Even if Gore was a terrible president, he would have been better than Bush. You can't be worse than the worst.

You will then understand how dangerous it will be if she becomes president. Also, anyone considering Obama needs to investigate Memphis, TN and how dramatically it has fallen and going to the dogs when a black mayor was elected and has turned the city into one big crime fest, taking school money for long extravangant vacations and buying $30,000 desk for his office and giving all the jobs and councils such as the schools, electric company and transportation to all his black friends who have destroyed all hope for the city, as well as placing minority laws that you can not fail a black medical student making the medical care systems a joke as well as deadly. Now the whites are the minority but the blacks keep getting all the priviledges of minority status. GET REAL, and by the way I am a female and bi racial black/white. 1. I am always shocked by the level of animosity directed at the Clintons and how quickly and easily people are willing to accept the lunacy of conspiracies involving murder and rape. WTF people? There has been an intense campaign of hatred and lies that has existed since before B. Clinton ever took office. Kevin H referred earlier to the lie that Sudan offered Osama bin Laden in 1996, which Clinton supposedly turned down. The 9/11 Commission found this to be completely untrue, first of all. Secondly, there was never an offer to turn over bin Laden to the US from Sudan. This lie has been perpetuated by Sean Hannity, Fox News, and other right-wing pundits like Limbaugh. The other claims about his indeceny and bringing disrespect to the Oval office are equally false. Sure, B. Clinton is not the best husband, but he was the best President we've had in the latter half of the twentieth century. After his last speech to the UN General Assembly, Clinton recieved a standing ovation. He had the respect of the world, as well as the trust. See if Bush ever gets a standing ovation at the UN. See if anyone else will ever take us at our word while he is POTUS.

Now, while I will defend Bill to the bitter end, this all has nothing to do with Hillary. She's proven herself to be bi-partisan, which we need in this fiercely partisan time. While her critics froth at the mouth and deride her as a "liberal", she's actually more conservative than her other two contenders. Her time in the White House and in the Senate, as well as having her husband's advice, gives her the neccessary experience to take this country in a new direction on day 1. In this dangerous world, we can't afford a President who will recieve on the job training on day 1. Hillary is a woman of integrity and family, which she showed by sticking with her husband following the Monica Lewinsky fall-out. She could have left her husband, but she and her husband overcame the difficult time and remained together, unlike many couples in this country who are too quick to divorce. She's the candidate of change who will bring her experience to the White House and undo the damage of the Bush presidency.
