Obama, looking ahead, seeks Hub dough

Posted by Scott Helman, Political Reporter January 7, 2008 11:52 AM

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- As the candidates emerge from their eye-poppingly expensive primary races in Iowa and New Hampshire, Barack Obama is scheduled to come to Boston Wednesday to refill his coffers.

Governor Deval Patrick and Obama's New England fund-raisers are hosting a $500-and-up lunch at noon for Obama at the State Room downtown. Obama is then scheduled to raise some money in New York Wednesday night.

"On the heels of the New Hampshire primary, we want to make sure that we kick in our part of the resources we need to go not just to Nevada and South Carolina but Feb. 5," said Alan Solomont, who heads Obama's New England fund-raising operation.

With polls showing Obama widening his lead over Hillary Clinton in advance of tomorrow's primary, his supporters are trying to keep a lid on their ebullience. New Hampshire was long thought to be Clinton's fire wall, but that appears to be very much in doubt.

"Whatever happens tomorrow, we're going on," Clinton told CBS's "Early Show" this morning. "And we're going to keep going until the end of the process on February 5th."

That Clinton feels compelled to assure people she would stay in the race after New Hampshire is a testament to just how much the plates under the Democratic race have shifted.

  1. I think it was ludicrous for people to assume that New Hampshire was a lock for Clinton in the first place, but especially after the Iowa Caucus. New Hampshire has a dearth of Independent voters - a group that Senator Obama has targeted successfully in previous elections. One of his primary focuses - on bridging the divide between the Left and the Right - seems to be the type of rhetoric that Independents would covet. He is the only candidate, I believe who is capable of doing that.

  1. I remember when Bill Clinton claimed to be the comeback KID even though he lost to Senator Paul Tsongas in the 1992 N.H.. Primary. Will Hilary do the same. Truth has never been very important to the Clintons and their friends. E.G. Mr. Morris. P. McLaughlin

  1. Hope, change, change, hope, beyond those two words what exactly has Obama said he is going to do? Until a couple of years ago, he was only a state senator, anyone believing that more experience isn't needed to be President of the United States is hopelessly naive. Sure his message is wonderful and makes people feel good but that does not equal a readiness or ability to lead. Deval Patrick had a nearly identical message to Obama's and what has he accomplished other than to renege on nearly every promise he made while campaigning?

  1. Umm Jonathan, the word dearth means "lack of".

I can now understand your enlightened interest in Obama.

  1. Campaign speeches and blurbs on the evening news are not where candidates lay out their specific proposals. You have to dig deeper. Try the Obama website for his specifics. Or not, and vote for whoever, and we can end up with another George Bush clone.

  1. Clinton's qualifications for the job are unrivaled. She has worked tirelessly to make the USA a better country for its people and the world; she has a long and substantial record of achievements. I think Obama is a terrific communicator -- so was Ronald Reagan. There is no time to lose here, and Clinton is ready to go on Day 1. We only need to look at the rough beginnings of the Patrick administration to know how perilous it can be to have a well-meaning leader who is just not up to speed. Sign me up for Obama 2016, but we might not get there without Hilary Clinton right now.

  1. OBAMA IS DOING WELL BECAUSE POLITICIANS HAVE FOOLED US FOR TOO LONG. WE NEED SOMEONE TO BRING ALL OF US TOGETHER AND OBAMA IS CAPABLE OF DOING SO. IT IS TIME TO STAY AWAY FROM PARTISAN POLITICS FOR THE SAKE OF OUR NATION AND OUR GENERATIONS TO COME.

  1. Umm Chris, do you actually have any commentary beyond smug pedantry?

It is tiring to hear people complain about Obama's vagueness (hope and change). At this point in the election process, few people at a stump speech for any party show the stomach for details. They are emotional affairs. Change in almost any direction could be healthy for our country at this point. What will change our country, for better or worse, is the emotion that's accompanying Obama's rise.

  1. I would vote for Hillary in a heart beat because she loves this country and has the most experience of all. She can get work done on day one.

  1. IF Bill CLinton wasn't the comeback kid, why did he win the primary and the election? CLinton haters are the most mindless garbage on the planet, the Clintons have done almost nothing but good, and in the vast majority of cases absolutely nothing to Republicans other than beat them.

The Press or at least CNN, NESN and Washington POst have it in for Senator CLinton, they are blatantly lying about the response and size of crowds at her events. I was at Nashua, and while she didn't spend much time cheerleading like Obama, She answered every question for over 1 hour and the crowd of 4000 loved every bit of it, though the response to the Q and A was better than the Stump speech. The crowd only didn't spend time chanting Hillary, BECAUSE she asked not to so she could answer more questions the two times they started chanting.
Through out the whole event, she was all about an honest presentation of substance, and the crowd loved it, even after they had to wait 1.5 in the cold to see her.
The WP, CNN and other talked about how bored everyone was, I have never seen such lies before. They also described an Obama event as over flowing(technically true, because there were only seats for 700), but failed to mention it still had less than 1/2 the number of attendees as the Clinton event.

  1. The only road to the white house for the Democrats is with Clinton. Lets get real about the chances of Obama beating the Republican election machine. Oh, and another thing, Obama does not have whats needed to lead this country. Lots of high hope talk for people who don't get it. Lets get real

  1. The republicans are registering to vote in the democratic caucus voting for Obama then register back to republican. because they believe they have a chance to beat him in the election rather then Clinton. The MEDIAS in lock step with the Republicans, Remember what they did to President Clinton then Kerry! LOOK WHAT'S WERE SEEING ON TV 24/7!! Now you are biting again. Wait until the fight starts for Presidency between Obama and who ever the republicans pick, they will bring things out both true and untruth and blow him out of the water. Can the country survive another REPUBLICAN in the white house. Please think about our country.
