Obama unveils platform on Letterman

Posted by Scott Helman, Political Reporter January 25, 2008 11:48 AM

What would a Barack Obama presidency look like? He told us on David Letterman last night, using the top 10 list to lay out a series of campaign promises he would fulfill once in the White House. Our favorite was No. 8: "Appoint Mitt Romney secretary of lookin' good."

  1. No doubt he consulted with Gov. Patrick (double tax money at crap table) before agreeing to unveil list on Letterman.

  1. Very poor judgment on the part of Obama and his campaign advisors! I was very sorry to see him make such a fool-hardy mistake so close to the South Carolina primary. Even though it was meant to be humorous, there were too many stereotypes of what conservatives fear will be the situation when the nation elects its first minority American President. The comedy routine did not embellish him as a mature leader capable of leading a traumatic nation through severe economic conditions, grave international complications and wise political change. I am very dismayed by the lack of insight. America’s future given the current paradigm shift is no joking matter.

  1. Re: #2:
Yes, this is equivalent to Richard Nixon appearing on the "Laugh-in" show before the 1968 election, or Ronald Reagan saying "My fellow Americans, Russia has been outlawed...". Really, it would only be bad if he were unfunny.

  1. Though I have no interest in seeing Obama as our next president, more a McCain person, he does show a lighter side of what is a very serious and important position. This isnt a bad thing but good I think. It makes him seem more down to earth and part of the community instead of an elitest above the people.
Remember, Nixon was on Lagh-in many years ago so its not unheard of to do a little humor and probably good for his image to most people.

  1. Chie, You write very well, if a bit formally. I haven't decided who I am voting for, but I do want whoever it is to have a sense of humor. Have you ever laughed during a serious moment? It can ease the tension and result in more productivity.

  1. Chie Bukuro:

Please, the life of a Presidential candidate is a very trying one. Why would you have a problem with this guy having a little bit a fun, and having that fun at his own expense?

Does America really need another paint-by-numbers politician? No thank you. I want more than a policy wonk, more than a person whose emotions are manufactured just to gain ground in polls, more than someone who feels their entitled to the position.

If you want a serious discussion on the issues, than you should tune into CNN or NBC. Don’t get your political news from Letterman or Leno.

  1. Then why is Hillary so funny when she does similar things?? Lets get over it.let's grow up and stop picking on him. Why not address Hillary's issues? Like her lack of trustworthiness. The scandals in the white house when they were there. Whitewater,Monica, ect, ect, ect. The fact that they divided the house and senate so badly for the first year they were in there. She is not a uniter but a divider.

  1. Take it easy, this isn't a bad personal touch to step aside from the daily blitz of campaigning media clips. Like many others, I appreciate his intelligence and presence, and we'll carry Obama through with the youth vote.

  1. I thought the delivery was a little stilted. However I don't think it is a campaign spoiler

  1. I really liked it, I thought it was cute, it touches on human nature's wish for a ray of light in a sea of darkness through these tough times. I was leaning towards Hillary, but I'm starting to see that she really is a bipolar figure. Even if he doesn't have her experience, if he surrounds himself with good advisors he can trully pull it off, while she exudes a domineering aura.

  1. Go Barack we love you in Massachusetts! It is great to see you have such a fun sense of humor, and you are so honest not like the Clintons who are constantly twisting the truth. You are what we really need in this country...no more politics as usual, fresh face, fresh ideas, willing to reach across the isle. Not creating a bigger chasm like Hillary is courting. I hope everyone in this country can look beyond race and gender and make something good happen. And that would be to make you President Barack Obama.

  1. Type your comment here...I think we needed a bit of comic relief after all of the Obama bashing on the part of the Clintons. And hey, Senator Obama, I like your delivery, too. Quite deadpan and effective. Rock with Barack!!!
