Predicting victory in Michigan, Romney speaks wistfully of his father

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --- Mitt Romney all but predicted a win today in his native Michigan, as he held his final primary day rally in a furniture manufacturers' warehouse, a venue that highlighted his promise to revive the state's crippled economy.

"This is a big day," the former Massachusetts governor told about 100 cheering supporters. "This is a day that's going to change the politics of the nation. I think Michigan is going to vote for a Romney again. I'm planning on it."

Romney was referring, of course, to his late father, George W. Romney, a self-made auto executive who won three terms as Michigan governor. The Romney legacy has been a constant part of Mitt Romney's pitch to Michigan voters, as it was today when he imagined how his father would be cajoling voters if he were alive today.

"I don't know how we could hold him down," Romney said. "He would be going from place to place to place, he'd be arguing with people that had a sticker on for somebody else, going, 'You can't vote for that guy! You've got to vote for my son.' "

"And so I miss him," Romney said. "I think of him here today."

After second-place finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire, a win in Michigan is considered crucial to Romney’s chances of capturing the Republican nomination.

With polls suggesting he is locked in a tight battle with John McCain, a decorated Vietnam veteran, Romney has played up his business experience, saying it will help him restore the state's beleaguered auto industry. Michigan has the highest unemployment rate in the nation, 7.4 percent in November. At times, Romney has focused so much on Michigan, he sounds more like a candidate for statewide office than a candidate for president.

"I'll work just as hard as anyone who's ever worked for this great state and make sure that the future of Michigan is bright," Romney said today. "And I will not rest until Michigan is back."

Voters seemed to respond well.

"He's been in business, he knows what's going on," said Dave Kutter, 67, a retired manufacturing engineer at a furniture maker, who was at the rally today. "Michigan is a business state and we need businesses here."

  1. Go Mitt!!! You know how to turn things around economically. Look at Massachussetts (going broke until you were governor); the Olympics; Bain;Staples. You can do it for Michigan and the auto industry too.

We are weary of our jobs not only "going overseas" but going to illegal immigrants from within our own borders.

McCain wants to give them amnesty. You want to firmly enforce immigration laws.

Mitt is the Man of the hour.

  1. It sounds like Romney has entitlement issues in Michigan. It's one thing to expect votes from a state where you've done something for its people, but it's something wholly different when you haven't.

If Romney cares so much about unemployment in Michigan and knows so much about the auto industry, why hasn't he directed his financial acumen or political interests toward Michigan in the past? It's not like he didn't have a reason to be there. He made a conscious decision not to be there.

Yes, he's been in the consultancy and private equity businesses. However, both of those businesses focused on identifying all of the problems with companies such as those in the automobile industry and exploiting those problems for profit.

I would bet the farm that Mitt Romney contributed to a net increase in unemployment in the U.S. over the course of his career. John McCain didn't do that and neither did Mike Huckabee.

  1. If you want to hire him as a manager that's just great but, he is no leader and certainly not a president.

Do not allow him to buy the presidency because you allowed him to pander sweet nothings in your ear and you didn't check his record.

  1. It is interesting how the press and election experts analyze a candidate's personality characteristics including warmth, humor, toughness etc. For me I want a president who is competent. Mitt Romney is the most competent candidate in the entire field and America needs his ability, his education and his experience. Why not vote for a president on ability rather than likeablity?

  1. If you like what Bush did for this country - you sure will love Mitt!! More Wars and recessions. Good For you Mitt supporters. In MIchigan, Mitt promises to bring back the U.S. Auto industry , even though they destroyed themselves by building bigger and bigger cars that use all that gas. We'll bail them out just like all those Banks run by Republican Managers. Give me a brake. Clinton had to revive the economy after Reagan and Bush and now anoteher Democrat will have to do the same.

  1. After reading the Detroit Free Press online it's apparent that Michiganers are as passionate about voting as they are about building cars....all reports are that the polls were virtually empty

  1. Mitt has business experience, but no political leadership experience. (aside from the 2 of 4 years in his term that he attempted to be governor). People need to see that in the world we live, we need a strong leader that can get the job done. Running a country is NOT like running a business. It can't be sold, broken-up or closed.

There are a number of candidates with the knowledge and experience to handle the biggest job in the world - Mitt Romney is not one of them.

  1. To Bottom Line: You're kidding me right? Increased unemployment?? If you really want to bet on that, I'll take that bet any day. Romney started such companies as Domino's Pizza, Staples, and The Sports Authority - those three alone have led to tens of thousands of jobs. There will always be companies that have no choice but to cut jobs unless they want to go completely bankrupt. Read a couple bio articles (written by the liberal Globe) on Romney, then take a couple business courses before throwing out some completely rediculous statement like that.

  1. I like both McCain and Huckabee, but I love Romney.

Mitt Romney is right on all of the major issues: The economy, defense, and social issues. (Pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, and pro-family)

The man is the complete package: Brilliant, honorable, and a proven success.(Business, Olympics, Government)

McCain and Huckabee have many of those same traits, but not all of them. Only Romney has it all.

  1. I sometimes wonder if any serious people post in here other then Campaign workers and anti Romney/Mormon hysterical mongers?

Mitt is the only candidate that’s been able to articulate his issues. When the subject of foreign policy comes up during debates the majority of the Republican candidates become rabbits in the headlights muttering about democracy and their own perception about Pakistan. Mitt has been able to show he grasps the concept and the implications of foreign affairs that impact America.

America is on the verge of losing it’s standing as a superpower akin to the end of the British Empire. America never conquered the world treating it as a colony – our cultural and political influence is waning worldwide. Mitt has been the only man who has shown pride in his quest and shown his vision is a vision America once had and should have again. You can call that entitlement issues for us all but it’s a standard we have lost and we should re-capture. Mitt can bring it back and by backing Huckster you wont have that… By backing McCain you lose even more… I know who we should vote for – it saddens me that the answer is already here and Republicans can only take the ‘Anyone but Romney stance’ leading up to this election. It's too important to lose an election on something trival when the most Qualified person should win - not Lackluster and back stabbing.

  1. Mitt is a pandering fraud. He ignored Massachusetts for four years after promising the moon. He will say anything to get elected. He has no integrity. Let us not forget what he said in 1994. What positions did he have then and what is he saying now? I don't buy the wholesale transformation. Indeed I don't believe anything he says. The Republican party can and must do better than this.

  1. I am amazed at how readily the bloggers overlook the fact that Mitt is simply reading a script -- a script that is vastly different than the one he read to be elected Governor of Massachusetts. Pharisee Brigade is right -- the GOP can surely find a candidate with some degree of integrity and constancy.

  1. I like the way Romney answers during the debates. He answers the questions directly, head-on, unlike the other canidates that give "slant answers". If Romney is not the republican nominee I think the other contenders will push me to vote for the democratic nominee.

Romney has excelled at fixing things he goes into. His business record proves that. If anyone can fix Washington it is someone like Romney. Not another politician with politically correct answers.

  1. Anyone who votes for Mitt, is voting for a political opportunist, who will say nearly anything to get votes. Log Cabin Republicans, anyone? (If you do not know what this is, Google it... "Mitt and Kerry Wish You a Great Gay Pride Weekend!" Our friend Mitt, the ultimate flip-flopper!)

And no, he is NOT from Boston. He was an absentee governor in MA and everyone who lives here knows it. He was flown in by a Republican party that realized that they would lose their hold on the governorship otherwise.

Anyone who votes for him is voting for the same old, same old -- what we now have in our current joke of a President.
