Romney airs new spot in Florida

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 22, 2008 09:58 AM

In his latest TV ad in Florida, Mitt Romney keeps his focus on the economy and calls for "conservative change" to fix what ails Washington.

"Today our economy is slowing. Many feel anxious about the future," he says in the ad, with a Florida backdrop. "I know how America works because I've spent my life in the real economy. I ran a business, turned around the Olympics, and I led a state.

"My plan will make our economy strong," he continues. "We need to invest in people and businesses with tax cuts that will get us moving again. Washington is broken, but we can fix it with real conservative change."

Romney, who is competing aggressively in Florida in advance of the Jan. 29 primary, has proposed a $233 billion economic stimulus package that includes cutting the lowest individual income tax rate from 10 percent to 7.5 percent and reducing the top corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent.

  1. It's pathetic that after 7 years of failed unhindered conservative policy that Romney is going down this path. What a loser...

  1. The only candidate who has actual experience in the economy - imagine that! Actually voting for someone who has experience fixing problems! Reading his bio is all the convincing you'll need. Helped create 10s of thousands of jobs through Staples, Sports Authority, Brookstones, and Domino's Pizza - that's the type of innovation we need. Sure there were some bad companies that needed to cut jobs - and there will always be bad companies - but in the grand scheme of things we need a leader who knows why jobs stay, why they go, and how to keep them here!

  1. Romney by far is the best candidate for the Republicans. First, he is a true conservative, unlike John McCain. Second, he actually knows how to turn around the economy with his experience in the private sector and he isn't saying all jobs are lost like McCain. Romney also has a conservative stance on illegal immigration and supported the Bush tax cuts. If you look at McCain's stances on the issues he isn't a conservative otherwise he probably wouldn't be campaigning with Joe Lieberman!

  1. I have been following this campaign closely, watching every debate, reading about each candidate and following the newspaper, radio and media. I feel a sense of desperation that the American people will look not only at the issues we face as they apply to the war in Iraq, but that they will recognize the critical need that we have in the United States to have a leader who knows how to run our economy. Mitt Romney has proven to be not only a leader in business, but also a leader of people. He does not solely rely on his own knowledge and insight but has the humility required to surround himself with experts. Mitt Romney has been an amazing leader and an amazing servant. My best to him as he endeavors to give of his time, money, knowledge, and love to the American people.

  1. If the economy remains the main issue, Mitt Romney will surely be the next president of the United States. None of the other candidates have any credentials to fix the economy. They are all talk

  1. This is a great ad and focuses on Mitt Romney's strongest of all his strong suits. He has had the world's best education on economic matters at Harvard Business school then has successfully applied all he has learned in the real world--creating boundless wealth for himself and his family and spreading that wealth by creating tens of thousands of jobs for other Americans.

Washington is broken! The economy is broken! Looks like the Olympics did when Mitt took over!!

FIX IT MITT!!!!! FIX IT MITT!!!!! FIX IT MITT!!!!!

  1. One thing I will like about a Mitt presidency as oppossed to a McCain presidency is that it will set a higher standard for this nation. We had the sex and money scandals of the Clintons and our country was dragged into the muck. McCain repeats that theme with his uncontrolled temper and lack of personal discipline.

Romney can deal with persons of opposing viewpoints in a manner that is dignified to both, and more likely to change hearts and minds. McCain, with his undisciplined mouth, excels in alientaing others and making enemies, and thus fails at his objectives.

  1. That's our Willard!

He slipped into the Governor's mansion of Massachusetts and then turned on the electorate and used them as punching bag when convenient in his run for President. He is a weasel who knows no boundaries when it comes to pandering and this is yet another example of his bold faced pandering to the electorate de jour.

I would love for him to get the nomination and watch him loose his most recent home state and the national election by a huge margin.

  1. Romney certainly was a shrewd businessman, but he doesn't really have that great a record governing Massachusetts.

Here is what the Boston Globe wrote on February 15, 2006, as Romney was nearing the end of his governorship:

"Since January 2003, when Romney took office, through the end of last year Massachusetts ranked 46th in job growth, up just 1.1 percent, according to Global Insight, an economic consulting firm. Nationally employment grew 2.8 percent. Massachusetts topped only Louisiana and Mississippi, which got crushed by Hurricane Katrina, and Michigan and Ohio, which got crushed by the decline of manufacturing....

Romney likes to point to the fact that the state's unemployment rate has fallen to 4.9 percent from 5.7 percent when he took office. What he doesn't say is that is in large part because so many people have fled the state or given up looking for a job. There are 40,000 fewer people in the workforce than when Romney took over."

  1. You guys who say that Romney did not help the state of Massachussets. You are dead wrong and I don't know what papers you are reading. The washington post stated how he obviously helped the state financially fixing their budget and creating a health care plan that worked. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/25/AR2006112500736.html

The problem with Massachussets is it is a strong liberal Democratic state. In trying to convert Democratics to support Republican ideas and policies, he failed miserably. Romney even stated that if he had known he was going to run for President of the United States he would have chosen a more conservative state like Michigan.

We all know that fiscal responsibility and pay as go ideas are foreign ideas to liberals who want hand outs for everyone.

If you're going to say anything against Romney, don't come around trying to fool us by telling us Romney does not have a perfect record at financially helping everything he touches. You are just dead wrong if you think we're that gullible.

  1. Romney is by far the best candidate running, and with Fred's departure, he will be the concensus Reagan Republican.

  1. Ok someone's been drinking the kool aid. Romney is NOT a true conservative. He also let alot of big business get taken away from Boston. It is actually a joke when people say he is a "true" conservative. Someone please tell the evangelicals that Romney vowed to champion gay causes and do more than Kennedy did for them. There is evidence to back it up including a letter and video clips of him saying this. Now he is trying to tell them that he is against gay marriage blah blah. Yeah, now that he is trying to run as a conservative. He has flip flopped on everything and if you look at his real record you will see that he is the gop version of John Kerry. Pull his string and he will say whatever he is told to even though the evidence says otherwise.

  1. When McCain says he knows little about the economy and that is the number uno issue on all our minds, then tries in a desparate sneak punch below the belt to lie about Mitt's stand on Iraq to try to divert our minds back to Iraq which is now a mop up operation with the US acting in an advisory roll according to Patreaus, he has proven why this pathetic pathological liar should not be President of the United States.

Mitt is the Man. The economy is broken !! FIX IT MITT!!!!! Washington is broken!
    FIX IT MITT!!!!!

Down with the liar John McCain and up with the most intelligent man we've had the pleasure of being able to vote for for President in a LONG time!!!
