Romney looks ahead after Florida loss
Mitt Romney made the rounds of the morning network news shows to make several key points in the wake of his pivotal loss in Florida to John McCain on Tuesday.
While acknowledging that McCain is the front-runner heading into Super Tuesday, Romney said he believes that conservatives will still coalesce around him. "I think I can stop him, but it's no sure thing at this stage," he said on CNN.
Romney also said that Mike Huckabee's presence in the race hurts him by diverting social conservative voters. It's "obviously a bit of a challenge," Romney said on Fox News. Huckabee and Romney are both aiming at Southern and border states next Tuesday. The pundocracy speculates that Huckabee is auditioning for the vice presidential slot with McCain.
And Romney blamed his loss on the endorsements of McCain by Florida Governor Charlie Crist and Senator Mel Martinez and on robocalls and attacks against him, especially McCain's accusation that Romney proposed a date for withdrawing US troops from Iraq.
Romney, and the remainder of the GOP field, is headed to California for a key debate tonight on CNN at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

It is over for Romney. If he wants a conservative to win, he should endorse Mike Huckabee. He has done more with fewer resources than any candidate and on a level playing field would win in a landslide.
OK Romney can't win anywhere where has competition or spends a lot of money- the voters seem to be saying "The more we know you, the less we like you."
This guy didn't make his venture capital millions by pouring cash into bad investments like this one.
While I think that Sen. McCain is a nice man I do not think he should be running for President. I am concerned about his age and his lack of experience in the field of economics. While 72 is not "old" Sen. McCain looks and acts old. If you have ever looked at presidents before and after photos you will notice how dramatically the position ages them. Would Sen. McCain be able to survive 4 years in office? The goal of any presidential candidate should be the full 8 years in office for continuities sake, if Sen. McCain did make the first 4 year term would he manage the second (if re-elected)? Our economy is in shambles and desperately needs someone who can build it back up and Sen. McCain has already acknowledged that he doesn't know as much as he should about it, he "has Greenspan's book". Again, I feel that he is a nice man but that just isn't enough, we need a President who can go the distance and make a difference.
Any candidate who exits stage left from the Republican field and throws his support to John McCain, or who stays in the race primarily to benefit John McCain in hopes of settling a political score with Mitt Romney and a spot on the McCain ticket is telling us:
a) they are not as conservative as they have been making themselves out to be, or
b) unprincipled and will do anything for political expediency (something of which they have continually accused Mitt Romney), or both.
At the end of the day, it is Mitt Romney who is the only conservative, principled candidate.
McComplain proposing benchmarks a year ago. What a freaking hypocrite to run the attacks against Romney right before the Florida primaries:
McCain considers setting benchmarks for Iraqis

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., one of the most stalwart supporters of the war in Iraq, said Thursday that he might propose that the Iraqi government meet certain benchmarks for the United States to continue its engagement.
Fellow senators and independent political scientists said McCain's thinking reflected growing concerns within the Republican Party about the course of the war, and also might mark a turning point for the likely 2008 presidential contender, whose previous unconditional backing of the war may have hurt his prospects.
McCain said Thursday that he hadn't yet decided on precise benchmarks. "They'd have to be specific, and they (Iraqi government officials) would have to meet them," he said.
Asked what penalty would be imposed if Iraq failed to meet his benchmarks, he said: "I think everybody knows the consequences. Haven't met the benchmarks? Obviously, then, we're not able to complete the mission. Then you have to examine your options."
McCain in no way is withdrawing his backing for the war or President Bush's plan to add 21,500 troops. It was unclear what consequences or timetables McCain would spell out, or whether he believes that Congress has the authority to enforce them.
Still, several Senate Demo-crats who oppose the troop buildup and also may seek the presidency said they were struck by McCain's comments.
"We Catholics call that an epiphany," said Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Joseph Biden, D-Del., who is sponsoring the main Democratic resolution opposing the troop buildup.
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said: "I called for that . . . several weeks ago. I'm glad that John McCain agrees with me.
"He's somebody who has enormous influence with the White House. He's been one of the key champions of this escalation of troops."
Before last week I was split between Romney and McCain----but as the week wore on and McCain lied about Romney's Iraq pull out position my dice rolled in the direction of Romney as how could you trust someone to be President when he lied to all of us.......now as a Republican and if McCain wins the Republican nomination, I will probably vote for Barack Obama, and if he doesn't win the Democtaric nomination, I won't be voting.......as then both candidates got here by cheating and lying and I won't be any part of this charade.
Romney will win in the long haul. It's not like McCain kicked butt. It is still so early in the game and come November Mitt will be handed the keys to the White House.
However it's fun to watch these guys debate.
Romney may not get the endorsement after all; what has he got to lose? A few millions but he still has a lot more left so at the end of the day or more so, this lifetime - he still walks out a very rich man. But what have the Americans got to lose, their conservative ideals because the world has more respect for the democrats - the republicans can accuse them of everything including socialist tendencies but reality is, THE WORLD WAS A LOT SAFER FOR 8 YEARS THAT BILL WAS PRESIDENT.
So yeah, go ahead - if I were an American - I would have voted for Romney because he embodied that North American ideal. But a nominee other than Romney is a sure loser. McCain can never stand against Hillary. We all know that Bill will always be there to share both power and brains and why shouldn't the world look forward to that. We all need a break from the Iraq war, atrocities of 9/11 and everything that supremist American leaders have caused upon their fellowmen.
Romney has the moral integrity that commands respect from the whole world; he looks presidential, he sounds presidential and he has an almost perfect family life. But then again, I guess most republicans in Florida didn't want that so your lives, your country - unfortunately, a lot of what happens there will impact our dear peaceful Canada and very often your leaders come to ours for support.
CONSERVATIVE AMERICAN'S - PLEASE GO VOTE.
I watched in dismay last night as the last TRUE conservative in the race lost in Florida by 4%. Although I appreciate McCains war service my admiration stops there. If he ran as a democrat he would win.
Romney is the only candidate that can heal the economy. We do not need another war time president (that is not a slam against President Bush) We need a president that understand's how to stimulate the ecomomy. We need a president that understand that the FAMILY is the core of the American Way and most importantly we need a candidate that can beat the socilistic (AKA Nazi Germany/ Stalin) idea's that Hillary spews.
McCain certainly did kick butt if you consider he was outspent 10 to 1 in Florida. I find it amazing that people actually think Romney is the conservative candidate. For the past few years, he has done his level best to justify his changing positions. Unfortunately, he is a man who will pander to anyone who will listen, change his position to suit his needs and buy his way into elected office. Democrats will tear him apart if he is the candidate in November. McCain may not be perfect, but he is certainly Republicans best choice not only in the Republican field but to keep they keys to 1600 Pennyslvania.
If he really wants a conservative to win, he should endorse Paul...
The more information that comes out about McCain, the more obvious it is that he is not presidential material. McCain has gone from not knowing much about the economy to becoming an expert when the economy became an issue. McCain lied to the nation about Romney's position on timetables. He even demanded that Romney "apologize" to troops for saying a president should have a private plan for success in Iraq. Yet the wisdom of Romney's position was demonstrated during Bush's State of the Union address when Bush announced troop drawdowns as a result of a previously private plan. The bipartisan applaused that Bush received demonstrates just how out of step McCain is. Sometimes one gets the impression that he want to pursue the war for the sake of war.
In the previous posts, Kevin got it right. I would add however, that McCain is part of the problem and he certainly won't be the cure. He brags about his military record, of his 23 combat missions (compared to fellow POW Col. Ted Guy who flew nearly 300) and who was McCains POW Camp Commander. Col. Guy said McCain never received beating, did accept special treatment contrary to the Code of Conduct and made filmed and written statements condeming the USA and then when he got home, led the charge to forget about the MIA's still over there and led the charge to normalize relations with Viet Nam. He is the original "Manchurian Candidate". I am a retired Army LTC and I will vote for Obama before McCain, and if it's Hillary or McCain, I'll just pray and not bother to vote because there is very little difference between the two other than McCains voice is less irritating.
Romney was endorsed by Tom Tancredo.
He has the best voting record on numbersusa.com.
He is a good age, with good health, a nice family, married to just one woman.
He looks and acts and sounds most what would make us proud around the world.
None of the others do.
I think the liberal media is afraid or Romney and doing all in their power to get Mc Cain nominated knowing he won't beat Hillary or O'Bama. Why else would you imagine the liberals are being so nice to him?
If McCain is really a straight talker, he would resign from the Republican Party and become a Democrat like he really is.
