Romney on defensive in debate
Mitt Romney found himself under assault from all sides tonight in the next-to-last Republican presidential debate before Tuesday's primary, and repeatedly urged his rivals to refrain from what he called personal attacks.
In the early portion of the ABC/WMUR/Facebook debate at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, Romney and Mike Huckabee clashed over a magazine article that Huckabee wrote that called the Bush administration's foreign policy "arrogant."
"I'm not running for George Bush's third term," Huckabee said. "I want to be president on my own terms."
When Romney challenged him further, Huckabee interrupted and asked Romney whether he had read the "Foreign Affairs" article.
"I got a copy the article and read the article," said Romney, appearing annoyed.
Sparring further on foreign policy, Romney told Huckabee: "Governor, don't try to characterize my position."
"Which one?" Huckabee shot back, alluding to his criticism of Romney as a serial flip-flopper.
John McCain accused Romney of lying in ads on McCain's position on illegal immigration, saying, "You can spend your entire fortune on these attack ads, but it still won't be true."
Rudy Giuliani said Romney would have put Ronald Reagan in one of his attack ads, based on Reagan's immigration policy.
McCain then picked up the flip-flopper charge when Romney complained that he had been misquoted in a news story.
"You change your positions often enough and you will get misquoted," McCain said.
And when Romney called himself the Republican best equipped to bring change to Washington, McCain zinged him, saying, "You ARE the candidate of change."
Romney replied, "The continuing personal barbs are interesting, but unnecessary."

Huckabee, McCain, and Thompson put Romney in the same class as Ron Paul.
He's now toast on the flip-flop issue....

Mitt wins again.
He was right on every issue that is at stake with this country. Just because he was defensive from his attackers, doesn't mean he lost the debate. He actually won the debate.
Being right on issues is what counts
It's about time he was put in his place. I feel dirty everytime I hear him talk.
Mitt would be lucky to be in Ron's class. He's the most intelligent one out there...NH will validate him on Tuesday.
They are only attacking Romney because they all know he is the best candidate for the job. He is the only one that can go to Washington and really change things. He is the only one who knows how to analyze the budget, agency by agency, department by department and then balance the budget by cutting the fat - and we all know the fat is endless - he is the only one with the guts or brains to do that job - which for most of us is the most important. Once the budget is balanced, our economy will improve, our dollar will gain value and everything else will fall into place. He will also use his skills to create a real energy plan, to come up with solutions for healthcare and to deal with the problems with social security. Romney's the man!!!!!!!
The country needs Mitt to fix the financial mess we are in. Who gives a rat's X&% what he did 10 years ago. Only an idiat would vote for anyone else.

Mitt is such a threat to the other candidates that they have no choice but to attack. He is by far the best and smartest candidate - the one who could make the most difference in Washington. He could balance the budget in short order (i.e. get rid of the deficit) given the opportunity to apply his skills to the federal gov't - it'd be a lot of fun watching him cut out all the fat!!! Mitt won in Wyoming today - New Hampshire should place their trust in him as well!!!!
Senator McCain is the person with the combination of character and experience for these times. Read his books or read The Looming Tower (a book he recommended in Feb, 2007 at a NH Town Hall Event). His belief that national security is a priority did not change - even through the low period in July when his campaign was low. He decided he'd rather lose and election than a war. Take the time to study his website, books, and recommended texts.

What exactly did Mitt do for Massachusetts? Oh yeah he spent the 2nd half of his term as Govenor "testing" the presidential waters and basically being everywhere but MASS. Then while he was away he had his illegal immigrant workers maintaining his yard. Oh yeah, Mitt is great all right-at being weasel.
McCain to win!!!

I was utterly disappointed at the immature cheap shots that were taken towards Mitt Romney tonight. The presidential candidates owe the American people the opportunity to find out what they each believe concerning their personal positions on the issues. It is not about taking jabs, it is about educating the people. This is the United States of America where we have a right to vote based upon informed decisions. It was absolutely selfish of John McCain, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Guliani, and Fred Thompson to waste our time in personal attacks of Mitt Romney instead of discussing their own positions on the issues. I commend Mitt for trying to educate the American public and for letting us decide who to vote for based on facts not childish games of name calling. Shame on the other candidates for debilitating the freedoms we Americans have given lives for.
Mitt is clearly a target as a frontrunner. Huckabee is a crazy loon, McCain was already decided about in 2000 and Guiliani is a serial marrier. Mitt is an incredible leader with vision and the ability to make change. Fiscally he brought discipline to crazy MA. In all ways he is a man of integrity and hard work and the people of NH would be crazy not to elect him.
Huckabee, Gulliani, McCain want to drop Romney out. NH people are not fools. All the support he has in NH will prove he is the man.
Romney has his weakness but I prefer him to other 2 candidates.
Gulliani is my 2nd choice.
Huckabee is nice guy but too "self righeteous"
McCain is an old soldier.

Mitt showed his character tonight. When the gloves came off he kept his demeanor, sounded presidential, and stuck to the issues. I think once the dust settles people will see the ones with the dirty hands are the mud-slingers. Romney is really the only candidate who could beat Obama or Clinton.
I'm Mike Huckabee, and I disapprove this message...But I'll show it anyway.

Were Huckabee and McCain unfair to Romney? When you constantly assail those who criticize the president and his stubborn adherence to policies, how can you say with a straight face that you are an agent of change? When you flip flop and alter your position on so many issues during the time period just before your run for the presidency, aren't people going to question your honesty and integrity? Romney has been slinging mud at his rivals for months, and now he's asking them not to do the same. Being polished, well groomed, well rehearsed and heavily financed is not the key to winning the hearts of New Hampshire voters. Tak a lesson from John McCain who has demonstrated over the years that he is a man of integrity and guts, even when it goes against the opinions of voters. Maybe you could take a lesson in what people really respect in a candidate.

MITT WAS AWESOME!!
He stuck to the issues while the others attacked him personally.
He looked presidential and they looked petty and desperate.
Better to be the target than than ignored, I guess.
He is the man to beat -- and everyone knows it.
All of the candidates words tonight demonstrated that Romney is the strongest candidate and who should be the Republican nominee. I wish Ron Paul would run with Romney as his VP. Let Ron Paul take on domestic and taxation issues - get rid of the IRS while Romney audits Washington and turns around the country.
Mitt was great in this debate. It is unfortunate that the other Republican candidates are coming across as kindergarten kids in a school yard fight. Republicans are not going to have any chance of becoming President unless they get back to the issues and stop the stupidity and underhanded infighting. Romney was the only one who looked like he has a chance at being presidential. Come on Republicans you need to pull your act together.
mitt romney sounded like a car sales man ..SLICK
every single mitt position is a classic republican position. these are not his conviction but his assesment tht will get him maxium votes.he is for these positions b4 he was against them.
iowa showed tht americans are not tht fool.
good luck mitt
To many voters are listening to the false reports that Romney has changed his mind on issues. He changed his mind once and he has explained that for an entire year. The Media and other candidates are distorting everything about Romney because of all the candidates he has been on top all year. The only way they can hope to win is to spread falsehood about him. It was five against one tonight, why? The answer is because Romney is the best. Did you see how little Mike Huckabee was in this debate? Even McCain was shy of attention in this debate. Huckabee is not a threat to John McCain in New Hampshire. Did you see how McCain was not even on the radar screen in Iowa? Romney is always the threat because he is the man to beat. He is doing amazingly with all the scuds coming in on him. Tonight Huckabee and McCain showed their true colors as the "personal attack " gurus. Romney has compared records but never used any personal character attacks. Huckabee and McCain are firing personal attacks at Romney right and left but whining loudly if Romney mentions their poor records.
Romney must be doing a lot right to have so much attention being given to him
Go Mitt!!!!
OK, who are all the shills who are posting for Romney tonight? The guy's a loser. He'll say anything to anyone to get elected. he has no personal opinion.. Stick a fork in him he's done.
Ahem -- Bill Clinton balanced the FEDERAL budget. Romney was bvored with Massachusetts and did very little positive. I bought the experienced businessman claim once, but not again! Romney is clearly the WORST candidate -- the smarmiest, slckest weasel out there. He (and apparently his supporters) can dish it out, but not take it. Did you actually WATCH the debate? It's clear all the other candidates hold him in disdain. I don't think it's because he's the best candidate! They see through his baloney, it's too bad most of you can't. Fortunately, the 3 or 4 of you who think Romney did well have only yourselves and about three others to convince. The national blogs are not nearly so friendly to Slick Mitt! But don't pay any attention to me, because I must be an IDIOT not to see that Mitt's the man!
Romney oversimplifies or gives half-truths = LIES! He is way too thin skinned to be President. He may have a brain, but not the heart or the nerve.

Huckabee is a religious nut who will ruin this country. McCain is too old and is suffering from dementia. Rudy has too many issues. Mitt is clearly the best candidate.
Romney came out looking bad tonight with his constant interruptions and inability to listen, he clearly lost his composure, not exactly qualities we need in our next president.
It doesn't matter who wins the GOP, they are going down to a Donkey.

Romney actually had a very good night. He was detailed and knowledgeable. It was quite suprising to see the two other leading candidates acting out a playground tit for tat with the barbs. Romney was articulate and composed. I liked him in Massachusetts and always think it is funny about the double standard we heard from the Globe and other sources about his running for President and spending time out of MA. John Kerry spending all of his time out of state running for President was "just fine" for our state but when a person of a different political cloth throws their hat in the ring things are different. Hypocritical.

Mitt Romney got a lot of attacks tonight. But when you compare those six republican candidates. Romney is the only one that has both private and public service experiences, age advantage, and physical health advantage. If you pick McCain, he is too old and too weak to win over Obama. I am an independent, I really want to see a good fight between these two parties. Don't let the game over yet.
My analysis deduced Romney having won the debate on points, but certainly it was no lnockout. Thompson and Paul accorded themselves reasonably well, excepting Thompson's barbs directed towards Romney. As for these incessant attacks, the remaining candidates looked sophmoric and their responses to questions were amgiguous at best. Romney and Paul made the greatest attempts to clarify positions with Thompson providing acute, but overly general, responses. Again, Romney wins on points earned by his arguments and his ability to withstand excessively childish behavior exhibited by his opponents, which was entirely directed towards him in an unnecessarily personal nature.
Why don't you commentators dig a little deeper and go to the website www.politifact.com to get the real unbiased facts on what the candidates records show about thier performance and position on the key issues. Then you will see why Romney won this debate and is the best qualified cadidate for the party nomination. Tom -Dallas, TX

I think Mitt Romney won hands down - he is the most presidential and knowledgeable. I think John McCain looked like a bully and an old one at that - it was disgraceful how the other candidates acted towards Romney, but Mitt stood his ground and explained his position on the issues better than anybody else - even with all the attack interruptions. I think the media is trying to bring Romney down - they want a Democrat to win and will say say anything - so they spread falsehoods about Romney. I think a Romney/Guliani ticket would be great - Mitt as president and tough guy Rudy as VP.
How do you trust someone who flip-flops like Mitt Romney?? How do you know what he promises now he's not going to flip in the future?
The concerning thing is that we do not know what this man will flip-flop on next. We do know that he has a history of flip-flopping.
I do not trust him and he will not get my vote.

ROMNEY WON!!! He was attacked because he represent the greatest threat to the other candidates, but did not cave in and proceeded to addressed issues, not resorting to personal name calling. Have you also noticed that he was the only one to discuss family values as an important issue for America? He is has the history of successfully executing a business plans, making him America's best hope for balancing our budget without raising taxes.
GO ROMNEY !!!! YOUR PERSONALITY AND BRAIN ARE VERYTHING. WE NEED A SMART PRESIDENT WITH A BUSINESS/FINANCIAL BACKGROUND TO HELP SOLVE THIS RECESSION ISSUES IN OUR COUNTRY.

mccain looks old, inflexible and easily offended. his demeanor is NOT what we need in this time of foreign policy crisis. he touts his foreign policy, but if he can't keep his cool when romney points out FACTS about his record, then how can we expect him to keep his cool when negotiating with iran.

Hillary Clinton dynasty,
John McCain's Politics of Fear,
John Edward's Politics of Convenience,
Corrupted Health Industry.
ITS SICKENING.

Hillary Clinton and John Edwards Voted for War on Iraq.
Barack Obama opposed this and he was right.
Hillary Clinton supported Bush on aid to Pakistan for wrong reasons.
Barack Obama opposed this and he was right.
John Edwards is using populist theme for convenience in this election and is a big hypocrite.
Remember that John Edwards was a Trial Lawyer, worked for a Hedge Fund Company and has 28000 sq ft mansion and $400 hair cuts.
Barack Obama is a community organizer from the beginning and is honest person and refused to be a Trial Lawyer.
BARACK OBAMA's JUDGEMENT TRIUMPHS OVER HILLARY CLINTON'S WRONG EXPERIENCE.
BARACK OBAMA'S HONESTY TRIUMPHS OVER JOHN EDWARDS'S HYPOCRISY.
BARACK OBAMA'S POLITICS OF HOPE TRIUMPHS OVER JOHN MCCAIN'S POLITICS OF FEAR.
!!! VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA !!!
Mitt is such a phoney that it's laughable. And to think people as close as NH that got to see him abandon this state and lie so much think about voiting for him. It's a sad day when someone can buy the presidency.
Hey Mitt - you lied through your teeth about the cost of your health care plan in Mass. I know first hand. Maybe $320 a month isnt alot if you have $400 million in the bank, but to working folks it is. Can't believe you could say its $160 a month with a straight face. Another Romney lie. Wake up people.
Florida Loves Romney!!!

Mitt Romney is clearly the most intelligent candidate. The rest act like school children with their personal attacks. So what if he has changed his position. It's better to be intelligent enough to recognize when you are wrong and have the guts to say so. Wouldn't we all rather have a President who can objectively look at himself, recognize when he has made mistakes, change, and move forward. The last thing I want is a bull headed President who will not change even when it is obvious that he should. I hope that there are enough intelligent people in this country to elect Romney, sadly there are not enough in Iowa.
Romney religion is relevant, as it is an autocratic institution, exalting itself, with pious demeanor, over the Bible, which establishes a separation between church and State as Roger Williams exampled. If Mormonism was not kept in check it would have become a full fledged theocracy, according to fantasies of it's founder and his unBiblical polygamous god. Search under "Utah War." Not that I believe Romney would take orders from it's version of the Pope, but it is duplicitous for him to claim he can be faithful to his faith and the Constitution. But in reality his record indicates his driving faith is that of political pragmaticism. And his prior record indicates that his future one will much determined by political opportunism, not Biblical piety. Not that i think anyone can get elected without comprmising such
