Romney wins key Nevada endorsement

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 17, 2008 11:44 AM

Mitt Romney, who is focusing on Nevada while his Republican presidential rivals battle in South Carolina, picked up the endorsement this morning of the Silver State's largest newspaper.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal said in its editorial that Romney is "the viable candidate most likely to lead Republicans" in the direction so that the GOP "again embraces the ideas and concepts that made this nation a beacon of freedom and economic opportunity."

Romney is scheduled to hold events this afternoon local time in Nevada, including one announcing the endorsement of state Senator Joe Heck.

Romney also plans to spend all of Friday and part of Saturday, when Republicans caucus in the state. He plans to bypass South Carolina, where other Republicans will be awaiting results from Saturday's crucial primary, and go directly to Florida, which votes Jan. 29, according to the schedule his campaign released today.

Romney has conceded South Carolina to John McCain, and is instead going after delegates in Nevada, which the leading Republican candidates have mostly ignored. When Romney lands in the state today, he will be the first major candidate to set foot there in two months, though Nevada will actually award more delegates than South Carolina.

  1. Mitt Romney TURNED AROUND the Olympics when everyone said there was no hope!

He TURNED AROUND the Massachussetts state from a $3B debt to a surplus in IN ONE FOUR YEAR TERM in spite of a Democrat legislature.

He TURNED AROUND Bain capital, Staples and numerous other companies providing thousands of jobs to Americans (maybe millions).

Mitt Romney is the TURN AROUND KING!!! Vote for the new ROMNEYCONOMY!!!

  1. My friends who work for the McCain campaign tell me that McCain thinks Huckabee is a "useful idiot" who he propped up on Iowa, New Hampshire, and Michigan only to take down Romney. Why does anyone actually take Huckabee seriously? He doesn't know the difference between economics and evolution, and his family couldn't fit through the front door of a barn, much less the white house.

  1. If the economy was the only issue, MAYBE I would vote for Romney. However, he changes his mind way too many times on various issues and you never know where he stands. He's an opportunist who will say anything to get elected. He'll tell you what you want to hear and then stab you in the back. He also fights AGAINST the rights of minorties. He claims to love America, but clearly can't stand Americans.

  1. Is it quite clear that a fair amount of the media, (notice I fought
off calling it the liberal media)....by the way, what I just did
should be called a "Huckabee",...anyway. It is quite clear that
Romney poses the greatest threat when the Dems and GOP get down to
finals and start reviewing REAL qualifications. That is why, in my
opinion, Romney is always fending off low blows. Others get away with
much more than he ever could with the scrutiny that is placed on him
to tarnish. Reagan was once labeled as "teflon" because nothing ever
stuck. Sometimes people really are what they say they are despite the
need to split hairs to incriminate them. Romney is the real deal. For example, the 2002 Olympics and how Romney came in when the
situation was clearly broken and he fixed it. There was plenty of
finger pointing up to the point he took leadership. From that moment
on, all finger pointing was overshadowed by solutions and resolve. He
was handed one of the most sticky situations, an international
scandal, in the wake of 9/11 and then he gave the world a flawless
shining moment at a devastating time. Is that not what we need now to
lead this nation? He knows how to rise above the fray and create the
resolve the move forward positively. That is what his whole life
personally and professionally has been about. He is the man to fix
    the broken Washington.

  1. Romney has shown that he has the broadest overall support. He is the best chance we have to get someone in the White House with the intelligence and get-it-done attitude to turn our economy around and make health care more accessible for all (using the same free-market principles that make America's health care system great).

He is a private sector success, a Washington outsider who cannot be bought by special interest money. He will not embrace the Washington political machine that works on behalf of Washington politicians first, and Americans second.

My vote is for Romney, our last best hope.

  1. Romney is the only canidate on either side with as broad of skills set that allows him to be qualified to at least speak to every issue. The mark of a true leaders is his or her ability to put good people around them to make up the difference. McCain and Huckabee continue to use terms like "Whirl the Veto Pen"... That is basically saying I should be king and not allow Congress and the Senate to do the job of a checks and balances team... We are a Democracy let these canidates not forget that as they wage wars against each other for the votes of our delegates.

  1. There is no question that Romney is the Reagan Conservative Candidate. Read on:
"MCCAIN: NO MORE MR. STRAIGHT TALK?
Wed Jan 16, 6:28 PM ET
Did Mitt Romney just derail John McCain's Straight Talk Express? Not all the Democrats' and independents' votes in Michigan were enough to canonize John McCain, who barreled through Dearborn and Detroit congratulating himself for nobly ignoring voters' real concerns. In Michigan, Mitt "fight for every job" Romney trounced John "I cannot tell a lie" McCain.

Romney's victory in Michigan was surprisingly broad: He beat McCain among both men and women, older and younger voters, Catholics and Protestants, people with incomes above and below $50,000, college graduates and those with just a high school degree. Romney even bested both McCain and Huckabee among white evangelicals.
What kind of Michigan voters preferred McCain? Voters in the GOP primary who don't like President Bush, who oppose the war in Iraq and who report that they have no religion at all. Oh, and those who say they are not, in fact, Republicans.
Will the Straight Talk Express power back up and chug through South Carolina? If the Michigan contest was partly a test of the brand's power, the South Carolina campaign may derail its essential credibility.
The Annenberg Foundation's nonpartisan FactCheck.org just delivered a powerful rebuke to the basic honesty of a McCain mailer used in South Carolina (and defended by Sen. McCain after reporters called it to his attention).
In particular, FactCheck.org called McCain's assertion that Mitt Romney "provided" taxpayer-funded abortions "simply false."
"Romney never pushed for taxpayer funding for abortions. The state law he signed provided greatly expanded state-subsidized health insurance for low-income residents," Factcheck.org explained. An independent body -- the Commonwealth Connector -- not Romney, decided that abortions would be covered (a move required by two Massachusetts state supreme court rulings).
McCain also had the chutzpah to charge Romney with failing to verbally support Bush tax cuts that McCain himself actually voted against .
FactCheck.org concluded that on the whole John McCain's portrayal of Romney's record as governor of Massachusetts was "so distorted as to discredit McCain's claim to be the candidate of 'straight talk.'"
St. McCain -- distorting the record and misleading the public? If you listen to former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, that may not be as surprising as the branders want you to believe. In an unprecedentedly frank evaluation of a former GOP colleague. Sen. Santorum, who hasn't endorsed a candidate, said McCain is "very, very dangerous for Republicans" on domestic issues.
"The bottom line is that I served 12 years with him, six years in the United States Senate," he told WABC radio talk show host Mark Levin. "And almost at every turn on domestic policy, John McCain was not only against us, but leading the charge on the other side."
Sen. McCain apparently had a nasty habit of leaving one impression in public on social issues like abortion and marriage, and another behind closed Senate doors, according to Santorum:
"That discussion is held in private, where you're jostling and jockeying to get your legislation into the queue so that you can have your time on the floor to get something done. And I can tell you, when social-conservative issues were ever raised -- whether it was marriage or abortion or a whole host of other issues -- there were always the moderates who said: 'No, no, no, we can't. They're divisive, divisive, divisive.' And more often than not, John McCain was ... with them."
"That's wrong," Santorum added. "And that gives me an insight into what he would really be like if he were president of the United States."
The next night on the Mark Levin show, another even more respected and distinguished conservative voice, Judge Robert Bork, called McCain a "liberal."
    Johnny, we hardly knew ye.

  1. I also think Romney is the real deal. Others might have some strengths in one or two areas. But Romney is strong on values, defense and the economy. He has turned bad situations into good ones. He is also intelligent and a great communicator. If given a chance, I think he will make a positive difference in our nation (and everyone knows we need that right now).

  1. I don't understand why anyone thinks that Romney's victory in Michigan was some sort of mandate that his "economic message" was working.

First, what exactly WAS that message? "Fight for every job"? I've heard that from every presidential candidate in history. Bush even used it in 2004 after the economy had spent four years bleeding jobs. And he could use it as much as he wanted - since it's useless.

Well, how did Romney actually perform as governor?

-- As U.S. real output grew 13 percent between 2002 and 2006, Massachusetts trailed at 9 percent.

-- Manufacturing employment fell 7 percent nationwide those years, but sank 14 percent under Romney, placing Massachusetts 48th among the states.

-- Between fall 2003 and last autumn, U.S. job growth averaged 5.4 percent, nearly thrice Massachusetts' anemic 1.9 percent pace.

    Source: "Mitt's mythical Massachusetts Miracle" - http://www.scrippsnews.com/node/26060

And among Michigan voters who thought the economy was "not good or poor" (i.e., the vast majority of them), Mitt only beat McCain by a 34% to 32% margin - a statistical dead heat!

    Source: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/index.html#MIREP

If we elect a president by the shape of his chin, Mitt will do fine. But if we judge him by how he's peformed when he's supposed to be guiding an economy, he's sunk.

  1. Washington is spend crazy. Billions thrown at every conceivable issue and no accountability. It's not just the 'tax and spend' democrats; the republicans in Washington are infected, too. We need someone, like Romney, who can put a stop to this madness. Someone asked one of the candidates whether he was a conservative or a liberal. He replied, "I'm both. I'm conservative with my money, and liberal with everybody else's."

  1. As a former Massachusetts resident, I was very happy with Romney. There are many misconceptions about him.

    "Romney was pro-choice"

Not personally. He has always been pro-life as a person but has not felt that his personal convictions should be forced on others. The people and the courts of Massachusetts were pro-choice. Romney couldn't have changed that even if he wanted to. He explained his position very well and publicly to us in Mass.

    "Romney raised taxes"

Not true. He cut taxes, but he raised fees for services. Some of those service fees had not been changed in decades and it was a very reasonable move on his part. The fees were not broad based. An example would be like those signs by the exit ramps that advertise food/gas/lodging. Yes, those businesses are charged fees in order to have that advertisement on the sign. Most importantly, Romney cut government spending, made a smaller government, and ran a balanced budget.

    "Romney supported gun controls"

He only supported background checks before you can buy a gun. A long time ago that took a few days. Now, by computer background checks can be done the same day. Technology changed, not Romney's position.

    "Romney supported healthcare mandates"

Everyone is this country has a mandate to buy car insurance. That is because if somebody wrecks into your car, if they don't happen to have insurance the victim would be hosed. A similar principle applies to healthcare. If somebody doesn't have health insurance, they don't get regular check-ups and preventative care. Eventually they end up in the emergency room and everybody else pays. I am glad that Romney is willing to do something about health care. Better yet, he plans on allowing each state to do it in a way that will work best for that particular state.

I like Romney, and I will vote for him.

  1. Just added up the percentages that the three leading candidates received in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Michigan. I didn't include the Wyoming results percentages in the calculations because, after all, Wyoming isn't considered a state by the eastern establishment. If I had, the results would really be skewed in Romney's favor:

Romney: 95.20 Two golds, two silvers
McCain: 79.80 One gold, two silver, one bronze
Huckabee: 61.60 One gold, three bronze.

And the MSM says that Mitt had to win Michigan to stay credible! Why are they not saying that Huckabee is done. He has three thirds!

  1. Read the Ann Coulter recent article "Elephant in the Room" in which she debunks the liberal propaganda that Romney constantly flip flops. It is not true. It never was. I could say that but I mention Ann Coulter because conservatives know she gets her facts straight. Anybody can comment on a blog and say whatever they like but I tire of hearing useful idiots repeat this tired argument because they heard a liberal commentator or liberals such asJohn McCain or Rev Huckabee say
it. So I thought I would mention a reliable source every conservative recognizes.

Romney is the best hope for our country.

  1. So McCain has gone negative? I thought he was against attack ads? So much for his arrogance! He and Huckabee are just wannabes without substance. While they are fighting for the "Evangelical" (meaning Southern Baptist convention for all of you non FORMERORDAINEDBAPTISTPREACHERHUCKABEE fans) votes, Romney is in Nevada, winning another gold and picking up 34 delegates.
McCon and Hickababy can gang up on Romney in the other states but now have to compete against themselves in So Carolina! What goes around, comes around. Bottom dwelling suckers, both of them!

  1. I think Romney's commitment to his admirable family gives enough testament of his strong value. Based on that, I can care much less of the so-called 'flip-flops'. What really matters is that he breaks the nice-man-finishes-last shackle by repeatedly showing his magical hands in turning around real world tough situations in short time frames. He is exactly what we need in a president - strong moral conviction, great leadership, superb communication skills, and a real world problem solving track record. What else can we ask?
