Ted Kennedy endorsing Obama

WASHINGTON -- Senator Edward M. Kennedy will endorse Barack Obama for president tomorrow, breaking his year-long neutrality to send a powerful signal of where the legendary Massachusetts Democrat sees the party going -- and who he thinks is best to lead it.

Kennedy confidantes told the Globe today that the Bay State's senior senator will appear with Obama and Kennedy's niece, Caroline Kennedy, at a morning rally at American University in Washington tomorrow to announce his support.

That will be a potentially significant boost for Obama as he heads into a series of critical primaries on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Kennedy believes Obama can ``transcend race'' and bring unity to the country, a Kennedy associate told the Globe. Kennedy was also impressed by Obama's deep involvement last year in the bipartisan effort to craft legislation on immigration reform, a politically touchy subject the other presidential candidates avoided, the associate said.

The coveted endorsement is a huge blow to New York Senator Hillary Clinton, who is both a senatorial colleague and a friend of the Kennedy family. In a campaign where Clinton has trumpeted her experience over Obama's call for hope and change, the endorsement by one of the most experienced and respected Democrats in the Senate is a particularly dramatic coup for Obama.

"The America of Jack and Bobby Kennedy touched all of us. Through all of these decades, the one who kept that flame alive was Ted Kennedy,'' said Representative Bill Delahunt, A Quincy Democrat who is also backing Obama. ``So having him pass on the torch [to Obama] is of incredible significance. It's historic.''

Obama's landslide win in South Carolina yesterday gives Obama and Clinton two wins each in the primary campaign, and puts the two senators in a fierce battle for delegates on Feb. 5, when 22 states will hold Democratic primaries and caucuses.

While polls show Clinton ahead in some large states, including her home state of New York and delegate-rich California, the Kennedy endorsement gives Obama a stamp of approval among key constituencies in the Democratic party that could make Super Tuesday more competitive.

Kennedy plans to campaign actively for Obama, an aide said, and will focus particularly among Hispanics and labor union members, who are important voting blocks in several Feb. 5 states, including California, New York, New Jersey, Arizona and New Mexico.

The Massachusetts senator was key in helping his colleague, Senator John F. Kerry, score a comeback win in Iowa in 2004, sending Kerry on a path to the nomination. Kennedy campaigned on his own and released several senior members of his staff to work for Kerry.

  1. I just strongly hope the older women start to see the qualities of Obama. I know it would be great to have the first woman as president, but Hillary isn't the right one to push the kind of change we need in this country. HILLARY SUPPORTERS - Please help us take our country in the right direction. 25+ Years of Bush and Clinton dynasties is not and can not be change. I URGE woman and Latino voters to take another look at OBAMA. YES WE CAN!!

  1. Mr. Kennedy shows his stupidity again- as does the daughter of President Kennedy.

Mr. Obama a 2 pack a day smoker offers nothing to Massachusetts or Connecticut.
I have always been a Kennedy admirer- no longer.

Ted-get a brain- Barack has no chance of being elected President.

  1. Interesting development.

As someone who has supported Hillary from the beginning, over the past week, I've begun to reconsider my vote on Feb 5th. I still think that Hillary would be a wonderful president, I don't want to have to see or hear Bill for the next 4 years. And this is from someone who loved the guy up until the last week! No longer certain of how I'll vote on Feb 5th.

  1. This is so exciting for the American people and the Democratic party. Senator Obama shows in his speeches his strong character and intelligence that we so desparately need in the White House. As a 51 year young, white woman from Algona, Iowa, when I watch and listen to Senator Obama I do not see a Black man, but a strong, energetic, enthusiastic man that will do a wonderful job leading our United States of America. I have always had the highest respect for the Kennedy Family like many others. So Senator Obama receiving the endorsement from the whole Kennedy Family will help tremendously for his campaign. Congratulations!

  1. Barack Obama richly deserves the blessings of the distinguished Senator Ted Kennedy and his niece, Caroline. Senator Kennedy is highly respected among his colleagues in the Senate for his hard work and intelligence and he certainly has had a chance to see both Clintons and Obama up close and in action. For him to choose Obama tells the story.

  1. This endorsement adds significant legitimacy, as well as impetus, to a presidential bid that seemed inconceivable in its chances at success, just a few months ago. For those of us who are observers because of our vantage point -- not being involved in policy-making decisions on a daily basis -- one can't help but feel that there has to be more reasons than meet the untrained eye, that Senator Kennedy must be seeing in Senator Obama. I applaud the distinguished Senator for making such a bold move, one that will undoubtedly result in some cooler relationships along the way, and congratulate Senator Obama for being deserving of the distinction.

  1. Senator Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy’s endorsement of Senator Obama are profiles in courage that many African-American leaders just do not have the willpower to exhibit. It is with great bewilderment that Andrew Young and Congressman John Lewis former lieutenants of Martin Luther King Jr and Reverend Calvin Butts of Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York would publicly endorse Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Nomination for President of the United States. 16 members of the Congressional Black Caucus also lack the strength of character to bring to fruition the work of past great Americas. Sojourner Truth was not risking her life along the Underground Railroad to free the Bill and Hillary Clintons from slavery. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was not endorsing the Bill and Hillary Clintons for public office from the pulpit of Abyssinian Baptist Church. President Kennedy was not thinking of the Bill and Hillary Clintons when he nationalized the Alabama National Guard to enroll African-Americans into the University of Alabama. Robert Kennedy was not thinking of the Bill and Hillary Clintons when he went into the black of area of Indianapolis without a police escort to inform them that Dr. King had been assassinated. Senator Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy know the spirit of America after falling asleep in 1968 is awakening. Who better than the two of them to ring the alarm!

Lets show the world we ARE special after all and we CAN elect a president of the people and for the PEOPLE! Lets regain our respect as standard bearers for free speech and individuality, free thought and independence, inteligence and strength. Vote from your hearts and we will be strong again! Go, America!

  1. The time for Obama is now. Not 8 years from now... now.

I'm eager to see this country start to unite. Someday our colors, races, genders, beliefs, sexualities, and finances won't define us as people. The US can recover its standing with the rest of the world.

I don't feel sorry for the Clintons. They've had a good run. Bill and Hillary have had major opportunities and their fair share of time. They can be proud of some of what they've done. Now, however, they simply do not deserve 8 more years, especially in light of their campaign's dishonest tactics and that of some of their campaigners (such as the whole Muslim hoax).

The American public has an opportunity to do something positive. No more waiting...

  1. Why would an established Democrat like Ted Kennedy be willing to do this, so early in the race? It is an inescapable fact that Hillary is the least liked of any of the major candidates in the race in either party. She may also be unpopular with her mainline Democratic colleagues in the Senate. Isn't it odd to you Democrats that other established Democrats are so willing to criticize her, or criticize her husband, or endorse her opponent so early in the race?

  1. Ted Kennedy is tearing apart the Democratic party. Shame on him. Again we are choosing a candidate and hoping the American people will vote with their gut and not their heads. Obama is no JFK or Lincoln- check out the op ed piece in the LA Times by the noted Presidential historian from Princeton University, Sean Wilentz.
Will the Democrats never learn? http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-wilentz26jan26,0,5561702.story

Deval Patrick used the same political operative, David Axelrod, he used the same words of "change", and "authenticity." Unfortunately his "yes we cans" have turned into "don't give up on me." The Republicans will smoke out the wizard behind the curtain and doom us once again to 4 more years and a Supreme Court lost for generations.

Shame on Ted Kennedy, he should know better- experience and competence is what we need to get us out of the gravest time in our history.

  1. Bravo Ted! This election is now about the future of our country and of the world and our nominee for President should be leading us forward with a plan and a vision to deal with critical issues significant to all Americans not just the rich and powerful. Senator Obama's assistance in the bipartisan efforts to craft legislation for immigration reform regardless of potential political fallout is just one example of how he will help solve those issues most critical to our economy. This is a new century with enormous challenges and Sen. Obama has shown that he is capable of listening to and mobilizing the American people.

  1. There is a major difference between the '60's and the beginning of the 21st century in terms of the socioeconomic and political trends. Baby boomers were split as to opting in or opting out of the 60's society. There existed very strong conservative social values and the fear of communism. The modern Civil Rights movement and the draft induced Vietnam War became natural rallying points with the youth, while the boomer's parents were finally fully realizing the American Dream, a full two decades after WWII. The country was in turmoil as we moved away from one major war to another one and the Country; and the young fresh JFK seemed to satisfy the need for new leadership.

Today, the American Dream has been dimmed not by a political system that has gone sour but not by political acrimony, which is really at the heart of the pruning of our United States Constitution. The continual concentration of wealth in the few has reached a critical tipping point for which there is no political fix, even if both of the parties were in full agreement under a so-called consensus President.

In the past forged 200 years our nation has formed a unique coupling with representative democracy and the ancient merchant capitalism. But we as a Nation still have not come to grips with the concept of sharing the great wealth of the United States because such a concept springs forth socialistic hysteria. Even today I have heard no economist, no politician, no patriot, other than a courageous Bankruptcy Judge who is overseeing the reorganization of Delphi, questioning, even benignly, the crisis of our present form of capitalism.

The Declaration of Independence, a founding document of the United States of America provided us with a solution to face abuses of power. The question is “Who holds the ultimate power in this country?” Congress? Judiciary? Executive? The ultimate power does not lie within our historical foundations. Our economic system has trumped our representative democracy. The economic power divides and conquers not us, who believe that our Founders had more that a good idea but divides and conquers the unelected boards of directors of the major corporations in third world superrich feudalistic societies, in which we still hold their hands, carry their ceremonial swords and watch their children dance before us.

Political acrimony is not my fear, for I welcome it. My concern is that the acrimony is solely over whom gets a bigger share of the small pie that is offered us. We have propped up a bankrupted Federal Government and placed the power not in the people but in those small number of individuals and conglomerates why decide which one of their interests will be protected.

  1. Very exciting indeed!!! The endorsment from the Kennedy's sends a good message to the Clinton-duo! They have tried everthing to discredit Sen. Obama! They have mistransformed his views and Hilary manipulated women with her tears before NH...

She has used her experience as the first lady and the tactics are not working.

Americans have matured, the question of race that the self-proclamed "First black president" have been juggling with to scare whites to vote for Sen.Obama has been demystified.

Bill Clinton went to the extent of inciting Americans that Jesse Jackson won SC twice to insuate that Obama's landslide victory was due to Black hate against whites!! Forgetting to mention that he himself and John Edwards have won the African-American State in the past!!!

Bill: You can foul people sometime, but you cannot do it all the time!

Thanks Ted! Thanks Caroline! Your patriotic move will bring back dignity and hope for America...

  1. I'm a 49 year old white male Reagan Republican who's fired up about Barack Obama. This election is not merely about issues and policies. It's more about leadership, coalition building and casting a vision of a better, more powerful, more compassionate and wiser America. Obama gets it. He could easily quote JFK saying, "it's time to get America moving again," as well as citing Reagan's "shining city on a hill" and still be consistant with his message and my own dream for this country.
If Senator Ted Kennedy actively campaigns for Candidate Obama among Latinos in California, citing the 1968 partnership between Cesar Chavez and RFK, he could very well help Obama carry the delegate-rich Golden State clinching the nomination.

  1. Ted Kennedy is the only Democrat who both could and would stand up at this moment and speak out against the tactics the Clintons have employed over the last few weeks. Only he, Jimmy Carter and Al Gore have anywhere near enough clout to push Obama passed the recent barrage of attacks, and neither Carter nor Gore are going to get in front of the Clintons. That leaves Kennedy. To hear that he's going to stand with Obama makes me think Barack might actually win this thing.

  1. I am a lifelong Democrat and I am almost sixty-three years old. I 'used' to think that Ted Kennedy always represented the best interests of the working class people of America, thinking that he wanted health insurance and decent wages for everyone and not just he wealthy. I resent his 'not' remaining neutral in this primary. His support for just one of the three highly viable candidates is very unfair to the others, and it only indicates to me that he wants to jump on the bandwagon with all the younger and much more than realistic, yet very hopeful people that want real change from the two-party system's very partisan representatives. Senator Kennedy has evidently become very old and gone unnoticed these days. He must be missing the Camelot years of old where his brothers were both made martyrs, and now he wants to be part of an effort to create another 'virtual illusion.' He evidently wants to be part of something that Obama is promising. The truth of the matter is this...we all want change, but unfortunately for all of us is the fact that the same old Democrats, Republicans and several other types of bureaucrats will still be in control of the government! In my lifetime experience, I have seen this, "Only the Clinton Presidency really balanced the budget and brought us greater prosperity for the workers of America. Bush squandered that same prosperity and plunged us into debt by giving tax breaks to the rich and then financing the Iraq war for his oil company friends. I could accept any of these candidates...but I would like to see all these 'has-beens' stay quiet on the sidelines whilst the process of the Primary goes on! Just so you know, I am a Viet-Nam veteran and have been in State law Enforcement since 1968. Never before have I vented in this manner, and I appreciate this opportuity given to one of the Silent Majority to speak out! Thank You

Oh...I get it! Jack and Bobby, being the womanizing philanderers they were (Thanks, Marilyn), and JFK's use of meds to care for bad back and worse - fit right in. Don't forget Chappaquiddick Ted as well. Yeah, they fit right in with Osama-Obama's pill-experimentating ways.

Pass the torch, Teddy. Try being sober while doing so...

And then, not to be outdone, Teddy Kennedy, the mumbling, booze-marinated, part-time life saving instructor, throws his ample weight behind the Illinois Kid. Wow...Obama's got it in the bag for sure now ! These absolutely critical endorsements make it abundantly clear that even a guy with a tailored suit, a Pepsodent Smile, the ability to outdance Ellen DeGeneres, and vague, hollow sound-bytes about undefined "change" only for the sake of change and no concept of the results of his actions can't make it to the Oval Office on his own. 1. Impressive that Ted stands up in a tough situation. Like him or
not, he stands firm and clear. Obama standing up on immigration
is like Ted, like the position or not. A third term for Bill
is also unseemly. Obama handled it eloquently. And effectively, "sometimes
I don't know which Clinton I'm running against."

Good for both Ted and Obama. Sticking up for Reagan early
showed courage and will resonate well in general election--
especially since he said it early. He may not win (dems need to turn
some red states blue) but pride and honor will be back.

  1. For the Kennedys to endorse Obama as the heir to President Kennedy is a great boost for Sen. Obama. But has anyone thought of Sen. Kerry's feelings? The years at prep school, the photos of Sen. Kerry throwing the football, practicing the 'Kennedy comb' on his hair, piloting a swift boat to be like PT 109, even buying a rocking chair. Has Sen. Obama done any of this? Well as President Kennedy said, "Life is unfair". To many of us Sen. Kerry will always be the real 'fake' JFK.

If it is change people are interested in, her campaign is truly groundbreaking. She and Bill are charting unchartered courses. If she is elected president, not only will she be the first female President and Bill be the first First Man, they will be the only First Couple to take up residency in the White House for a third term together since the term restriction was passed.

All the candidates running will enter the White House as a First Couple. None can compare in that regard to what the Clintons bring to the table. Collectively they have 16 years experience in the White House and they are going to need every bit of it to reclaim this company for the American people.

  1. I thought he would have endorsed Sen. McCain since the two of them conspired to ruin this country by giving twenty million illegal aliens amnesty.
I can't believe how hypocritical these Dems are. They talk about equality but really mean entitlement. Obama goes on and on about personal freedom and equality but supports affirmative action, which does discriminate based on color. They talk about people being able to attain a better quality of life, but want to give them as many handouts as possible. This only causes dependency. Lower income citizens and minorities are being fooled by left wing politicians, and these same liberal politicians that rely on their vote will say anything to get it.
Also, most liberal politicians support amnesty for illegal aliens. If amnesty is given to all illegal aliens it will negatively affect the same people they claim to represent. They drive down wages and take away jobs from American citizens that need them. And they do not do the jobs that Americans won't do.

All this unity and visionary talk does not make you a President. (Bush) Our country is in a mess and we need someone with the political know how and brilliant mind of Hillary to do the hard work. It also brings in to question the loyalty and reward in our party. What he is saying is that her years of work in public service for the party mens nothing. The least he could have done as a friend was not endorse anyone. I think this tells me what kind of party I belong to and I don't think I can bring myself to vote for a candidate with no record to deal with the mess Bush has left us.

I was thrilled a year ago to see the incredibly strong candidates we had, an embarrassment of riches really. I never could have imagined that I would be bemoaning the party for its divisiveness and ugliness. I haven't chosen a candidate yet, though it is becoming clear who the only viable candidate to the Clintons' campaign of ugly is and that will be my candidate. I believe Ted Kennedy has just saved the democratic party from a truly ugly end of petty, lying divisiveness. Totally unbeatable by any Repub in the general election too...

  1. Good for Ted Kennedy. Obama needs someone in his corner to deflect all the negativity and lies stated by B. Clinton.

  1. The Clintons seem to believe they have a God Given right to the nomination and anyone who dare get in their way should be crushed. They will go to any devieous length to accomplish it. i have been a life long democrat and have admired theClintons but after their shoddy tacticts in the last few weeks there is no way I could vote for Hillary in November.I will regrettfully leave the ballot blank in the choice for president.I am deeply disappointed in both of them. There was no excuse for such performance.Their attiude seems to be this. we will use you when we need you,and abuse you when we need to.

  1. I have been a registered democrat my entire life. I have decided to become a republican. I hope Kennedy loses the next time he runs for the senate, though that probably wont happen. It seems he has a life time job. Why dont they get that old horse out of there and let some new guy take over. I mean all the shame and embarresment he has brought to that state after all.

  1. I can't say that I have seen the real 'brother, Ted,' of John F. Kennedy since the Euology he gave for brother Robert F. Kennedy's funeral. Meaning, "welcome home."

I'm grateful he is endorsing Barack Obama and will continue to aid him in the nomination for President of the U.S. I am beyond thrilled that Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg wrote the beautiful column about Obama as well explaining her detailed reasons in being able to see someone so much like her father was.

After Kennedy, I became a happy Reagan Republican, a Caucasian woman with career and family and for the first time I have hope that someone can lead our country as JFK did once again before he was taken from us and so quickly followed by brother RFK. So we now have our JFK and our Reagan again.
