Two Michigan newspapers back Romney

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 11, 2008 09:51 AM

Mitt Romney claimed endorsements today from two newspapers in Michigan, his native state where he is focusing his wounded presidential bid.

The Grand Rapids Press, in its editorial, says that Romney and John McCain would both offer "solid leadership," but "when it comes to Michigan's challenges and needs, the passion and knowledge of Mr. Romney tip the scales in his favor."

In its endorsement, the Oakland Press also cites Romney's ties to the state and says he "certainly has the credentials to run the country."

McCain, however, has endorsements from the state's two largest newspapers -- the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News -- in his pocket. Today, he launched a TV ad citing those endorsements, highlighting their praise for him as a straight shooter and critic of pork-barrel spending and his appeal to independent voters, who were key to his 2000 primary win in Michigan.

The Arizona senator, Romney, and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee are leading the field heading into Tuesday's Republican primary. McCain and Huckabee are also battling in South Carolina, where Republicans vote four days later, but Romney has pulled his advertising from South Carolina to marshal his resources for Michigan.

  1. I just wish that John McCain, would drop out he has run so many times his message never changes and he is a war monger. Who needs this. What he needs to do with himself is get on a war committee. He does not admit the country has an ecomony in trouble. He does not see how to bring back jobs to States that not only are in their own recession but headed for depression. He does not admit that we have a problem with the housing slump which is bringing down the economy in all sectors. He is the biggest hinderance to the Republican party getting a front runner and defining the message with his antiquanted views. The Democrats should be sending him flowers and thank you notes for slowing down the Republican bid for the White House.

  1. if the endorsements are basis for your 08 choice or otherwise you can help your choice score here:

    http://www.ireachable.com/vote

you can capture basis for your choice using story/tag line ('the why factor') in the affinity section.

  1. Totally agree with Linda Ryan; I can't see why Republicans are voting for him.
I'm a moderate independent, and would vote for Clinton or Obama over McCain.
His message is so old, its rotting.

  1. The article above is full of temerity and falsehoods. Consistently McCain has
topped polls as being the most effective candidate against the Democrats. He
is honest and the most highly skilled when the nation has 180,000 troops in a
dangerous situation in the Middle East. McCain knows the world and military,
security, and forein affairs the way Winston Churchill did during his nation's
time of peril. Study McCain's expertise: this man is an American Churchill,
decorated with the Bronze Star, SIlver Star, Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying
Cross, Legion of Honor, the list is endless...In my books, heros trump flip-flop
    romney's any day.

  1. If you went back thirty years ago America used to be a self-sufficient country that relied on itself for most goods and items. Since then many of our factories have been closed down and our jobs have been outsourced to third world countries like India and China. McCain and the majority of those in Washington have no problem with this as they believe it's our responsibility to provide these different countries labor even if it bleeds our economy away to nothing. McCain even admitted this to a certain point when he told the people of Michigan that'd they'd need to learn to live without those jobs as if they had a choice! His solution was for them to develope new techonologies and energies like they had just been twiddling their thumbs all this time is insane and just shows his incompetence when it comes to our economy!

The average unemployemnt level in the nation is over 5% and worse in places like Michigan where it is 7.4%, and even in my state of Alaska it is over 6.4%! The man has already admitted as well that he felt no regret over his "McCain-Feingold" bill which would have in essence given amnesty to millions of ilegals just by allowing them to buy their way in! Can anyone deny the further catastrophy this would cause our country! If McCain has his way and is allowed to legalize the 12-20 millilion ilegals in this country our economy will only get worse as our unemployment level continues to rise till the ilegals are the only ones working!

Don't make the same mistake Iowa and New Hampshire made Michigan! Vote for Romney if you care for your jobs! His record alone shows he has the skills to turn our country around and save us from an imminent recession!

One other thing, Huckabee had mentioned before how he felt that people would rather have a man who worked along side them as president then the man who had them fired, well this may be true but we should all remember that no one ever made a living off of a poor man. Romney may be rich but it's wealth he made on his own in the private market with the same exact skills he would use to stop our jobs from leaving our country and return many that have been lost. Mitt Romney is the best man to lead our country!

  1. To put it simply:

McCain is all about himself (I), Huckabee is all about the "spotlight" (see me), Romney is about helping the American People (US).

  1. Why do you members of the press keep pushing that Romney has a "wounded" bid for President. He won first in Wyoming--yes it is in the west which just shows his broad appeal, but it has more delegates appointed than New Hampshire which has had such limelight. Why do you think Eastern votes are more "valid" than Western votes. Right now Mitt Romney has:

    1) Won in Wyoming (8 votes and potentially two more AL votes)
    2) Taken second in Iowa and garnered delegates.
    3) Taken second in New Hampshire (won R vote by exit poll)

Let's look at the guys you are touting as winners in the states so far:

    1) McCain LOST BADLY IN WYOMING.
    2) McCain LOST BADLY IN IOWA.
    3) Huckabee LOST BADLY IN NEW HAMPSHIRE.

Only Romney finished very well in all three states. Mitt has more delegate votes than anyone. Please give him the credid.

  1. McCain is a war monger, that's true. He's also got a terrible temper, vindictive nature and thin skin and thinks nothing of insulting heads of state regardless of what it causes this country. As far as him pointing fingers at Romney for changing his mind when he sees a course is not right, what about McCain flip flopping on his own wife who raised his children while he was a POW, became ill, and got dumped for the beautiful heiress who later financed his Senate campaign? They are still married and he wants her as First Lady. He also brags about being at the bottom of his class and two of his biggest coups in the Senate had to do with taking away our Constitutional Right to free speech and giving amnesty to people violating the sovereignty of our border, all the while accusing US of being "unAmerican" and "lacking in compassion" while the housing market dives and self employed are forced to compete with those wonderful illegals he let in. Now, he's trying to tell us how stable the economy is. He should hand over his job to an illegal Mexican, as far as I'm concerned.

  1. John McCain and Mike Huckabee are both fine men and would make decent presidents, but both have serious baggage that we don't need going into a general election.
McCain is a war hawk through and through, and while this is his biggest selling point with republicans, the war is not as popular nationally and this will be his undoing against the dems. He is also way too old! I know that doesn't seem like a fair argument, but it's true!
Mike Huckabee is running as a candidate for minister in chief, but that is not what the election is for. He knows next to nothing about foreign policy, his fair tax plan is laughably ridiculous, and his record is very liberal on immigration, education, and entitlement issues. Plus his "I'm just a poor guy like one of you" populist message is disingenuous and ineffective. Obama or Hillary would easily out liberal him in appealing to the losers-with-their hands-out-stretched crowd.
If we want a republican to actually have a chance at the white house, we must vote for either Guliani or Romney, and Romney has the best chance out of those two because of a cleaner personal life and better positions on abortion, gun control, and immigration.

  1. I don't see how McCain can be an all round effective leader. He very nearly bankrupted his own campaign this summer. it's nice that he was able to recover from that, and I suppose that says something for him, but I think a better choice would be someone who understands how not to come that close to the financial precipice.

  1. Between 2005-2006, ontheissues.org states that McCain scores 18% by United States Border Control on immigration issues.

0-30% open border stance (approx 197 members)
30-70% mixed record on open borders (approx 70 members)
    70-100% sealed-border stance (approx. 202 members)

We need Mitt Romney as the next President of the United States. He's tough on illegal immigration, knows a lot about the economy, esp. the international economy. He knows about budgets. He knows how to change Washington.

He doesn't understand global economies, and frankly, he's not that bright, or young. He's had enough chances to run for presidency in the last several elections and always seemed half-hearted at best. Loving your country is not enough! It takes brains and stategies, as well! 1. Just because he is a war hero won't make Mccain a good president. Take a minute and listen to the candidates. I think Mccain just runs on batteries. I even think he mentioned tanker three times last night for reason. Romney is the only legitimate front runner. Romney speaks clearly and intelligently and should get the nomination. Every single candidate, all of them, have flip-flopped; its called being a politician. Unfortunately, Romney may not get the nomination because evangelical christians don't like mormons. What a sad state of affairs. Michigan has the opportuniy to make a statement for the rest of the country and it is time to make the right decision. The minute Mccain defeats Romney is the minute he forgets about Michigan.

  1. All I know is, the media is pushing McCain and Huck 24/7.The media is hoping for a Democrat in office,so I don't think they will do anything, but help get the worst Republican to run. Huck looks good to them, because he has as much baggage as Hillary and Bill. The way Huck wears his religion on his sleeve, they will say he is another George W. Bush. I voted for W, I won't for Huck.
McCain sides with the Dem's so much, that if he gets elected, the Dem's still win. The Media is constantly telling us that Mitt does not have a chance, even though he is leading in delegates. Me thinks, the media is lying! Mitt: Married to same woman, loving family, top 5% in college, did volunteer work as a young man, saved the Olympics, created businesses, saved businesses, well spoken, looks like a president, not too old or young, no baggage,..... He is the Democrat's worst nightmare!

  1. I studied McCain, Jack, he was third from the bottom of his class at the naval academy. And I am not electing a commander of a boat, I am electing the top executive of this country. McCain is not qualified. He doesn't even know what the duties are between a senator, a governor of a state or mayor of a big city... thinking he's got one up on Romney, Giuliani and Huckabee, because they didn't come out and denounce Rumsfeld like he did, when it wasn't even their place. It just made McCain look dumb and opportunistic, not them. He also bashed Romney for wanting to give General Petraeus the consideration and honor of being the first to speak on the success of the surge, as he was supposed to do the week following that one debate. McCain showed a lack of respect for the general, because his ambitions are blinding him. Churchill? NO WAY.

  1. As I watched the Republican debate last night, I was sitting there thinking, let's get this group together, (like Romney likes to do when trying to restructure a company) and maybe we can come up with some way to fix the problems of the nation. All had some good ideas. I thought that, while the MSM has Thompson dropping out and supporting McCain, his views were really rather in line with Romney's.

Immigration: Almost a year ago I heard Romney talk about enforcing the laws by going after illegal employers. What has happened to that debate. Building a 900 mile fence is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of! We don't need a Berlin Wall surrounding America. What about the Canadian Border? Oh, then we can build a fence on all of our beaches!

Just take away the incentive for illegals to come to America. Eliminate the jobs by prosecuting the employers who provide them. Is that too much to ask?

Oh, Huckabee. I forgot. What a useless individual - strike him from the team. I don't think I have seen a more conniving, dishonest, person in politics since Bill Clinton. There is a reason he is a "former" Baptist Preacher.

  1. What we and the world need now is a competent, capable American president...Someone with tons of substance and integrity with a little style thrown in.

Yes, admire Obama's eloquence, Hillary's, um, style, Huckaby's "I'm more qualified because I'm not as successful financially so I'm one of ya'll" style, and McCain's heroic military record. However, we are not voting for charm, gender, pastor, or Viet Nam war history. We are voting for today's President of The United States of America.

If one has really done his homework to study the candidates' positions and qualifications in ALL aspects of the requirements of the Presidency, there really is only one choice. Stature both domestically and internationally, substance, style, commitment, compassion, and integrity: It's Mitt Romney.

  1. McCain...McCain...McCain---The press loves McCain, Why? Because the main stream media is pro Democrat and is liberal. Is it not clear that by pushing McCain the Democrats will win the Presidency. McCain is asleep at the wheel. He does not understand economics, has a short fuse (Dr. Strangelove), and is about as diplomatic as George Bush at his worst moments.

Romney has all of the elements of a leader. He has experience, knowledge of economics, is articulate and well-spoken, is not arrogant (McCain), can think well on his feet, has an analytic mind. We need someone who is smart, not just political!

  1. The sad truth is that due to Michigan being an "open" primary, allowing anyone to cross over and vote in our primary, we can look forward to McCain once again being elected by liberals while Romney carries the conservative vote and loses.

Romney won amongst conservatives in NH 38-31.

    Pathetic.

  1. When I look at the resume' of each candidate, the intellect and temperament of the individuals running, and their personal lives and values, there is only one person who truly rises to the level to be President of the United States of America and that’s Mitt Romney.

I fully believe that Mitt Romney and his family would represent us well around the World and would be the kind of leader who could restore our reputation as the envy of the World. I think he would surround himself with the best-and–the-brightest people and together they would tackle the challenges facing America and put us on the right course for the future.

The choice is so abundantly clear to me and yet it is so distressing that America doesn’t seem to be able to see what I do. Mike Huckabee likes to say he is the “common man” and while that resonates with many Americans, I would argue that in these perilous times we need more than the common man, we need the uncommon man.

  1. Open Primaries are awful. Romney won amongst Republicans in New Hampshire but somehow he "lost" the Republican Primary? What a dopey system!

Republicans should choose the Republican candidate and Democrats should choose the Democratic Candidate.

Finally, marie thomson is right. Romney won Wyoming and placed second in NH and Iowa. Huckster and McCain both flopped poor showings in Iowa and New Hampshire and didn't even place in Wyoming. Romney has received more votes, more delegates and more dollars to-date, yet the press keeps pumping McCain and Huckabee. Why? Because they are basically the stooges of the lefty press. McCain is nominally a Republican and Huckabee is a RINO who governed Arkansas to the left of BILL CLINTON. Compare Governor Huckabee's governing record to the positions of Harry Reid and you will see that he is LEFT OF REID, the Democratic Senate Majority Leader. Huckster is a RINO!!!! How can Republicans vote for such a snake oil salesman?

  1. Paul what are you saying ROMNEY supporters insinuated misconduct in SC in 2000? Your logic is inconsistent. Why is it that whenever McCain's record is presented it is a smear? That is exactly why no candidate attacked him last night in the debate. McCain is a not a conservative candidate. If nominated he will not win in November.
Remember this is a primary election we need to select a candidate who can win in November. Romney is clearly an electable candidate if it were not for the open primaries he would be in first. He is the candidate that Republicans want and would elect for President. Romney is not a Washington insider like McCain. Romney can and will turn Washington around. McCain will remain in the Senate to derail the republican agenda as he did when he lost the nomination in 2000. McCain is a war hero he is not the best candidate for president, there is a difference. Mitt Romney is the best choice for the future of America.

  1. Sorry Paul - actually, many Republicans in places like the State of Washington, where I'm from, are actually frustrated at the way those who have voted so far only listen to the liberal media who constantly hype McCain and Huckabee - without really looking into their positions. I don't need a candidate who shows how well he can play guitar and go hunting and make jokes, or a candidate that brings up his war experience from 40 years ago as the reason we should vote for him - both have positions that are too liberal for most conservatives. Having watched many of the Republican candidate's debates - I've only seen one clear winner in all of them, Mitt Romney. He is passionate about America, has clear ideas and plans to help us and is not only extremely intelligent and hard-working, but has what I want in a president.

  1. To Paul at 1:45 PM

I can assure you I am not part of Romney’s campaign and I doubt many of the other posters here are either. There is simply a group of people in America that have a conservative ideology in the tradition of Ronald Reagan and McCain and Huckabee are not true conservatives. Yet, we watch in great frustration as the evangelicals in Iowa voted on the issue of religion alone and the independents in New Hampshire were able to “swing” that race to McCain. We also watch as the liberal media promotes Huckabee simply because they know he’ll be creamed by the Democrats in a general election.

I think I speak for many true conservatives when I say we have been relegated to watching the game from the sideline and feel that our voice isn’t being heard and worse yet, it may never be heard if this nominating process ends early. I come here and to other blogs in utter frustration but with the hope that someone on the fence without a selected candidate will listen to what I say, read Mitt Romney’s biography and will come to the conclusion that the guy has impeccable credentials and would make an excellent President.

John McCain has done a great service for his country and I am in awe of went he went though but ideologically, I simply disagree with his positions and the direction he would take the country. I am not paid to be here…..I am here, as John himself would say, not for profit but out of patriotism and a love of America.

I think the media is way biased and puts forth messages that stir the pot for their own personal choice. It shouldn't be that way. I am greatful for the integrity of our nation, good men that stand up and are willing to lead this country. It is our right and duty to seek with an earnest and honest heart that candidate that represents Valor. I commend our President Bush for his direction. No, he isn't perfect. He would be the first to admit that. He did take a stand to defend our country on all fronts. We can't criticize him unless we have walked in his shoes, which most of us haven't. I look to Mitt Romney at this point. I see the Jewels that sparkle in his life. His family, love of country, and the desire to serve with all that he has to offer for the good of this nation. 1. I am a conservative independent in the state of Washington. I like Romney because he is the most consistent conservative across all three parts of the Reagan coalition - Social, Financial, and Defense.

McCain & Guliani are both strong on Defense, moderate on fiscal issues, and left of center on social issues. Huckabee is strong on Social issues, but is weak on foreign policy, and too far left fiscally. Plus he sounds like John Edwards trying to win on class warfare. I like Thompson and Hunter, but neither have the following or money to win.

On top of keeping the coalition together, Mitt has a track record of turning broken things around, both in the public & private sector. But I believe Mitt is better served by focusing on his accomplishments and the changes he can make in the future and staying positive.

He has taken a beating from the media and other candidates for going "negative" even though they have made personal attacks on Romney while his ads were focused on differences on issues. Regardless, I think the perception about his campaign being negative affected him in Iowa & NH.

If the others take their gloves off and go negative, which those candidates who survive Super Tuesday will eventually do, then Mitt should fight back. But until then he should focus his message on change and hope, which is resonating with the electorate right now.

  1. The liberal media and it's agenda is only effective as we are blind. I havent 'blogged' much prior to this (twice ever) but am SO relieved to see these blogs in favor of Romney.

The country needs to be run like a business. If one is level-headed enough to put forth the work and research required for such an important political decision, one would see that Romney is the well-rounded candidate & has the intelligence, innovation, work ethic, global and economic discernment, patriotism and most importantly, the character values..i.e. STANDARDS...to make vital decisions for the nation. He values the American citizen regardless of religion, race or class and understands clearly that this country has to move upward and forward from where it began in a fair manner ('get in line!'). The man is articulate (clear debate winner last night, those of us that know it dont spend all night trying to text in a vote) in every sense and as a bonus, has command presence of a President- minus the personal ego.
Do the homework; don't vote blindly. It's MITT.

  1. Voting Republican for many years I am astounded McCain and Huckabee are lauded and getting votes when they are so far from traditional Republican values! The only admirable thing about McCain is his record as a prisoner of war. How far does that carry him? His record on tax cuts, immigration, family values as well as many bills with very liberal senators like Feingold and Kennedy prove him to be very liberal. Huckabee's record on taxes, pardons, etc is shocking. Remember his admiting to tax hikes in the debate with Romney' yet he continued to lie saying he lowered taxes after the debate. Look carefully at his record--erasing hard drives before he left office etc. It is hard to believe evangelicals will vote for him regardless of his record. I am a Christian and am appalled at this and know this is one reason why evangelicals are discounted as ignorant and irrational. The only true conservative that not only espouses a but lives family values is Mitt Romney! The choice is clear if one is a true traditional conservative!

  1. Interesting, I see a lot of posters claiming Romney is for jobs and America. Just an conterpoint of reality here Romney used to run Bain corporation the same company that consulted Intel and many other US companies in layoffs and manufacturing facilities in China.

Just because you smile pretty and talk about jobs in America doesn't mean you heven''t been making millions by shipping them overseass in the past.

  1. Romney has the economy in mind. That is the most important issue, people! If there is no money, there is no fighting the war. No money, no abortions to argue about. No money, no fences at the boarders... The list goes on. Wake up America! Romney is an economic genious!!! He's the only republican that can get us out of the recession after he beats the DEMS.

I'm an independent and MITT ROMNEY has my vote!

  1. Question #25..Paul,you hit it right on the nose sir! It,s the liberal media and yes FOX news, that has fallen into this McCain-Huckaberry blitz! They know that if these two team up and run together, this will not only be a sure win for the Dems, but the illegal immigration outrage will die.80% of the American public are against amnesty, but these two clowns are downplaying this issue. We all know the records of Huckabee when he met with Presidente Fox in Mexico to set up a Mexican cons.in Little Rock, which is against Article 1,section 10 of the U.S.Constitution!And McCain, who is only running on the fact that he was a POW in Nam.Remember the McCain-Feingold-McCain-Kennedy act anybody! McCain is for amnesty no matter what he says.Michigan,South Carolina, and Nevada, don,t vote for these two please!

  1. MITT ROMNEY is the only viable candidate for president on both sides of the aisle. Wake up people! Mitt has the most integrity, is hugely intelligent, even-tempered, hard working, organized, capable and sincere person on the ballot. He also has great work and moral ethics and is a fun person!

Romney is the one who will bring Michigan roaring back economically. He has a proven record and delights in challenges such as this
    VOTE FOR MITT!!!
