Clinton hits Obama in new Wisconsin ad

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 13, 2008 11:38 AM

Hillary Clinton, reeling after eight straight losses to Barack Obama, is airing a new ad criticizing her rival for not agreeing to a debate in Wisconsin, which votes next Tuesday.

It is the first negative ad that Clinton has aired against Obama in weeks.

"Both Democratic candidates have been invited to a televised Wisconsin debate," the narrator says. "Hillary Clinton has said yes. Barack Obama hasn't. Maybe he'd prefer to give speeches than have to answer questions. Like why Hillary Clinton has the only health care plan that covers every American, and the only economic plan that freezes foreclosures.

"Wisconsin deserves to hear both candidates debate the issues that matter," the announcer concludes. "And that's...not debatable."

The two Democrats have agreed to two debates, Feb. 21 in Texas and Feb. 26 in Ohio. Both those states vote on March 4.

  1. Debates very seldom solve answers. They are to get the audience believing in one of the debaters answers. The never just debate the issues and get to the core of the problem, etc. I prefer to see one at a time debate with an announcer. That way you hear his side and do your own evaluation of the subject.

  1. one of the major themes of the Clinton campaign has been that the New York Senator is "battle-tested" and better prepared to take on McCain and the right wing attacks. But that has been turned on its head by the fact that a junior Senator from Illinois has ended up putting the Clinton campaign on the ropes. It's hard to argue that you can demolish John McCain when you can't decisively defeat an opponent who came from nowhere, with no national name recognition, in your own party's primary. That is just common sense.

  1. Sharpton: Don't Seat Fla., Mich.
That's the headline from the AP.
This is what we can expect - Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and on & on & on & on - sticking their noses where they don't belong, including the media - especially those two pigs Sean Hannity & Dick Morris. Those two must make their wives so proud. I pray they don't have daughters.
Seat the delegates. Give the people of Florida & Michigan their voices.
Go after him Hillary, hit him hard! He is an all talk punk. And that wife of his should get lost also. Everyone seems to think they are both so squeeky clean - Boy have they all got a surprise coming. GOD HELP US ALL IF O'BAMA BECOMES PRESIDENT.

  1. She shows what a coward she really is with her usual slight-of-mouth laced with sly tactics. The American people know just who she is and that the Clinton Coupe Machine is what it is and that's not debatable. History predicts the future and her's is what it is and that's not debatable. She's playing her 'smile alot' game that she taught her daughter as noted in her book. What folly. She isn't even a good portrayal of class - but portrayal all the same. Poor thing. The American women who vote for her 'cause she's a women or needy and the weak alway align with the weak, it make's them feel strong but based on what? Get over it American women and drop the raving co-dependency, put a rod up your back bone and let it be YES WE CAN, YES WE CAN.

  1. This is silly, since he has agreed to other debates. He has clearly stated that he wants to have a chance to meet real people rather than get on TV for the umpteenth time. Also, he's been taking questions at his rallies!

On the subject of healthcare, here in Mass I know plenty of people who are going to be fined this year because they can't afford health care. A mandate isn't the best way to get people covered... we need to make health care affordable!

  1. Clinton needs to just give it up for the good of the party. She will never win this thing and the longer she keeps up this pipe dream, the more damage she does to the party. The Cult of Hillaryland needs to face reality.

  1. Clinton is a sinking ship. Is this the best her team can come up? They've debated 22 times already, and they're debating two more times before Texas and Ohio. We know the issues. We know the candidates. We can choose on our own. Does she really believe that a debate in Wisconsin would change anything? She's already given-up hope in the state, and is using this poor ad as a substitute for running a real campaign.

  1. Thats so lame
maybe the reason he refused is because he knows she's only going to attack him and rather than get into a name calling contest with her "again" its better for himself and the party that he just avoid her altogether. besides Obama does not need to debate his record speaks for him. Voting wisely & endorsing what works or makes sense is all Obama has ever done & the end of the day that’s all that politicians should be doing. They vote to pass bills and occasionally introduce them. Obama has spent over 11 years doing this (8 in the Illinois Senate & 3 in the US Senate). In contrast Hillary has spent only 1 term (6 yrs) in the US Senate. The 8 as the first lady which she keeps trying to shove on her resume honestly do not count since the role of first lady is to run around greeting people, naming things, acknowledging accomplishments and occasionally starting a program or two (such as her failed attempt at healthcare reform). "Now" although meaningful to some these are not critical tasks since god forbid a president ever be single (sarcasm). & As for the other 27 years she's been touting, "again" she was not a real politician she was a business woman and a governors wife.

Getting back on the topic “of what exactly has Obama done” to answer that question one needs to look no further than what Hillary has done in her past 6 years in office in which she’s passed into law 20 pieces of legislation.
    And here they are;
    1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
    2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
    3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Hon
    4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
    5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
    6. Name post office after Jonn A. O’Shea.
    7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
    8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
    9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
    10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men’s Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
    11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men’s Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
    12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
    13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
    14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
    15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty.

Only five of Clinton’s bills are more substantive:

    16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
    17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
    18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
    19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
    20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

Is it just me or does it seem like she’s gotten too comfortable with her roll as first lady?

Now, I would post those of Obama’s, but the list is too substantive, so I’ll mainly categorize.

During the first eight years on the Illinois senate he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced:

    233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
    112 crime fighting bills,
    97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
    21 ethics reform bills,
    15 gun control,
6 veteran’s affairs and many others.
& during His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded:

**the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law),
**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law),
**The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law),
**The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee), and many more

Going off the facts Hillary seems to be playing house while Obama is not playing at all. He’s the real Deal.

Don’t believe me? Look it up yourself. These bills and the records of all the candidates can be found on the website of the Library of Congress www.thomas.loc.gov

IT SEEMS LIKE SOMEONE TOOK THE NOMINATION FOR GRANTED JUST BECAUSE OF HER LAST NAME. I JUST HOPE THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN STAYS POSITIVE AN SHOW THEM THE NEGATIVE POLITICS WANT WORK.

  1. Obama's economic stimulus plan received the highest rating of all the candidates as reported by the Washinton Post.

You can also google his Senate Foreign Relations Committee work--you'll find it
    pretty impressive.

Senator Obama's healthcare plan seeks to make it more affordable so more people can opt in. Senator Clinton's mandates that people must purchase their own policies. Both plans leave people uninsured.

All candidates are to be commended for running.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I'm not going to hold it against a candidate for having brains AND inspiring people.

Was Senator Clinton in Texas when this ad aired?

  1. Senator Obama's reluctance to appear on another televised debate with Hillary Clinton should be a cause for concern for us all; his debating skills are poor and he needs all the practise he can get, if he wants to be the Democrats' candidate.

So far, he has been treated with kid gloves by the media - and the Republican attack dogs - and his supporters resemble a cult of awe-inspired disciples expecting him to walk on water. His policies have been generalized and poorly presented; his track-record is that of a "flip flopper" on important issues - or, in Illinois, as someone who voted "present" 138 times, rather than for or against.

Only Hillary can stand against McCain - and call him on his crazy statements like "the American people don't mind if the military remains in Iraq for a hundred years"; I'm praying that Democrats (and those Independents who are voting in the Democrat Primaries) will see sence in Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont - and vote for (battle tested) Senator Hillary Clinton.

  1. Good points Anton. From what I have seen and heard about Obama events, he gives a good speech but rarely takes questions. He seems to prefer appearances (like reading a top 10 list on Letterman a couple weeks ago) to interviews, and the media has gone very easy on him when they do get a chance to ask questions. So debates are especially important because they are just about the only way for us to see him really talk about policy, answer questions, and deal with pressure. It is disappointing that he doesn't seem confident in his ability to do these important things. Hillary, on the other hand, has performed very well in many debates and tough interviews, really showing that she knows her stuff, can handle a challenge, and is ready to run against McCain and be president.

  1. Evelyn, it's time to chill baby. I'm sure you'll grow to love Obama as president. I do agree with you that they should seat Michigan and Florida delegates, they should either re-do the primary (or Caucus) or seat them as proportional to the national popular count. Seating them otherwise would be wrong.

Anton - Senator Clinton was a no show on one of the most important votes yesterday, oh yeah, and was completely wrong on Iraq.

Obama always talks about writing a new page in history and that we need change in America. Well, that's fine and dandy Barack, but tell me.. How? How? How? We needs solutions, not fairy tales!! Bush left a terrible mess and Hillary is the one to take on the job. Keep those advertisements coming Hillary!!

  1. The people of Wisconsin have problems that are unique to their state so why not have the debate? I guess Obama wants to work his magical spells on Wisconsin folks, and lull them into Dreamland where Unity abounds. There in Camp Unity, there will be no housing crises, no dumb wars, no terrorists, no dictators, no ethnic fighting as in Kenya, no Darfur and we'll be all well-fed. Come on people, wake up and face reality. Already Al Sharpton is on MSNBC saying the votes in Fla and Michigan shouldn't matter. I guess he can afford to come on board ship now that Obiaman is on a roll. He wants to revel in the momentum that has eluded his people for hundreds of years. When Obama sought his endorsement earlier on why was Al Sharpton on the fence? That is because he didn't think Obama had a chance. Al Sharpton may just be Obama's undoing. It ain't over till it's over. My advice to Hillary is "Never Give Up--Fight to the End. You've Got What it Takes"

  1. Yeah, what is Obama afraid of . Wisconsin wants a debate so give them one. This is not really a negative ad. It is not mischaracterizing Obama in any way; it's the truth, Obama does not want to debate in Wisconsin, but he wants the people's vote. Obama "where's the beef?" Stop trying to mesmerize people with speeches derived from Jesse Jackson and MLK former speeches. I am not sold, because there is no substance in the rhetoric.

  1. Funny how when I try to comment on Hillary videos on YouTube that it has to be approved... not so much for Barack.

The Clinton family simply knows how to campaign because they've played the game for so long. While Bill Clinton was admired, Hillary has still instilled the polarizing fear in many Americans.

Her recent problems are making her turn to negative ads, something she previously agreed to turn against. First the loans, then staff shake-ups, then ignoring Obama's recent sweep (she couldn't even say thank you to him!), then skipping Wisconsin to let her daughter and husband do her work, and now she puts up this bologna ad?

Shame on your Mrs. Clinton. If this is your way of showing you are battle tested, then you are just proving why politics as usual is nothing more than personal gain.

  1. Obama's religious affiliation have surfaced with little impact so far. denied charges about his supposed Muslim upbringing are gradually giving way to more concrete allegations. The latest round involves his political intervention in Kenya, the home of his late father, where violence between ethnic and partisan factions has erupted in the wake of a disputed presidential election. As usual, the right-wing narrative melds half-truths and lies with facts to create a seamless indictment.Leading conservative blogs and publications charge Obama with recklessly aligning himself with opposition leader Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement. Followers of Odinga, a member of the minority Luo tribe, have perpetrated horrific atrocities against members of the Kikuyu tribe because incumbent president Mwai Kibaki and the nation's ruling elite are Kikuyu. One of the worst incidents occurred in the village of Eldoret, where dozens of Kikuyu Christians burned to death when they sought shelter in a church that was then set afire by their rampaging pursuers.
alleged Muslim plot to overthrow the Kibaki government, which is friendly to the United States and the West, and replace the secular constitution of Kenya with sharia law, creating a haven for al-Qaida -- which blew up the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi a decade ago and still operates there, according to American diplomats. During the Kenyan election, the Christian evangelical movement in Kenya circulated a "memorandum of understanding" allegedly signed by Odinga and a group of Muslim clerics that would commit his government to instituting Muslim strictures against pork and alcohol, setting up sharia courts and ending cooperation against terrorism with Western governments.
Denounced as a forgery by Odinga and Muslim authorities in Kenya, The point is to raise questions about Obama and his connections with Odinga -- who claims to be his cousin -- and to infiltrate those doubts into the mainstream media. Its true Obama, whose family is Luo, lent support to the opposition leader during a visit to Kenya two years ago -- and that they have maintained contact ever since. While that gaffe infuriated the Kibaki regime, it proved only that Obama lacked diplomatic expertise. During the current crisis in his homeland, he has tried to play a constructive role by taping radio announcements for the State Department that urge both sides to stop fighting and resolve their differences without violence. The Kenya tale portrays Obama a callow politician with dubious associations, who cannot be trusted with power. He will be subjected to the same ruthless treatment as the last Democratic nominee.

  1. The more I read from Obama supporters, listen to Obama's speeches, and look at their websites, the scarier Obama becomes. If Clinton wanted to be negative, she should have highlighted Obama's obvious messiah complex. Calling himself God (abcnewspoliticalpunch), stating a beam of light will come down on people and they will know to vote for him (Jan 7, 2008 New Hampshire speech), and now a website (http://obamamessiah.blogspot.com/).

    This is too much!
