Clinton musters history in LA

Posted by Marcella Bombardieri, political reporter February 2, 2008 04:22 PM

LOS ANGELES – Perhaps it’s trying to counteract the Kennedy family tilt toward Obama. Perhaps it’s playing up Barack Obama’s youth and alleged inexperience. Actually, it’s probably some of both.

Whatever the reason, history was thick in the air at the rally Hillary Clinton just finished at Cal State LA. Oakland mayor Ron Dellums talked about how his politics were formed in the 60’s and said, “People keep saying this is the politics of the past. No! It is the politics that is overdue.”

The crowd chanted “Yes she can!” a feminist spin on the United Farm Workers’ chant, “Si se peudo!” UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta was up on stage.

Clinton invoked Cesar Chavez and Bobby Kennedy.

And she added an interesting new line: “I offer in this campaign a record of making positive change, of standing up for those who are voiceless, powerless…Year after year after year after year after year after year.”

Yup, that’s at least six “years,” before she was drowned out by cheers.

  1. I'll be voting for Senator Hillary R. Clinton in Tuesday's Democratic primary in Connecticut. I'm voting for her because I'm a proud McCain Democrat and know that Hurricane McCain can beat her like a drum in November!

  1. Hillary's speech was just filled with rote proclamations that no one could disagree with. She basically just shouted out inarguable statements. Yes, we all want good health care and lower tuitions. It's easy to get cheers talking about that. But I have no confidence in her ability to get us there. Didn't she already have her big chance to get a decent health care plan years ago?

Moreover, she's so divisive - trying to drive a wedge between blacks and whites, blacks and Latinos. We've had enough of that! The Republican machine will come out in droves to squash her!

She may be crafty but she's just not a people person. You need someone with charisma, not just to bring together Americans but to build a bridge to international leaders.

This time it's Obama baby!! It's time for a positive, intelligent, thoughtful leader with real integrity.

  1. Senator Clinton's Rally in Los Angeles yesterday was wonderful. Our future President has the solutions and experience to lead our Country.

After the last treacherous seven years under George Bush, inexperience and Rhetoric are not enough.

Yes she can, Yes she can, Yes she can!!
