Clinton, Obama haggle over money, debates
Even as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama wrangle for every single precious delegate, they're also competing for campaign cash. But it doesn't appear that they'll be debating each other too often.
The Clinton camp is bragging that in just 30 hours since Super Tuesday, it raised $6.4 million online. The campaign said that her supporters in essence have repaid the $5 million loan that Clinton confirmed on Wednesday that she gave her campaign.
Obama's camp, the Associated Press reported, said it has raised $7.2 million and counting since Super Tuesday, which ended up in a stalemate between Clinton and Obama and emphasized the need to bring in more cash for the long battle ahead.
In January, Obama's campaign says it brought in $32 million, way ahead of Clinton's $13.5 million. Each Democrat brought in more than $100 million during 2007.
Meanwhile, the Obama camp so far has rejected a challenge from Clinton to debate five more times before March 4. Now, there is only one confirmed face-off, Feb. 27 in Ohio, but there have already been about 20 debates.
"One of the things I've always appreciated about the Democratic Party is its willingness to engage the toughest issues facing our country, even if we don't always agree on how best to solve them," Patti Solis Doyle, Clinton's campaign manager, wrote today to her counterpart for Obama, David Plouffe.
"After seven years of a Bush administration that has left the economy struggling and our health care system in crisis, Americans are certainly facing their fair share of challenges and deserve to hear how the candidates for the nomination will address them," Doyle continued. "As such, I was disappointed to see that Senator Obama rejected the idea of having more debates given the fact that he and Senators Clinton have had only a single one-on-one debate. I think we can do better and so does Hillary....'m sure we can find a suitable place to meet on the campaign trail. There's too much at stake and the issues facing the country are too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close. "

We don't need more debates, we need their focus on the issues and out in the public where the people are. Hillary has an edge on Barack in debates and therefore wants to debate her way to the white house and that's not what this movement is all about! This is not about a White woman or a Black man, it's about making a lasting CHANGE in this world and that's something Hillary cannot do!
Senator Obama-- Please, please, do NOT agree to any more debates.
The American public are exhausted by these events and there is just nothing more to say. Your respective positions have been solidified and we have a strong sense of who you are in terms of foreign and domestic policy.
We need more personal time with you both (town hall meetings, rallies, interviews, etc.).
We do NOT need another night listening to CNN fall all over itself---not to mention Senator Clinton plugging her website and the Hallmark Channel.
It's a political trap. Don't fall for it.
This is typical Clintons tectics; they like to haggle and slush-n-burn politics. Since Hilary can not inspire as Obama does, but, she can shout louder than Obama.
She definitely like debate, this is her comfort zone. What she can not do is - inspire people!
Someone need to ask hard questions to Clintons, what scandals they have caused in 35 years? Watergate, travelgate, failed healthcare, impeachment! Not so sweet of Clintons presidency!
People need to watch 'Hilary, The Movie'!
Hilary energize Republicans like no other democrats do!

Of Course Clinton wants more debate. They are free TV time to present her views. No matter what the questions they stay on message and rarely answer the actual questions. Why would Obama want to give her free TV coverage? The debate before Ohio/Texas is enough. Everyone has already heard what they have to say and it is the same in every debate.
I have debate fatigue. Go talk to the people and convinced them that they can count on you to solve their problems. Enough speeches and debates. Show us plans we can trust!
I think Obama should debate Hillary. I am a Barack supporter.
BUT, they should have neutral moderators and longer time to answer.
Barack has a way of giving longer and well thought out answers that require thought. And there should be a penalty if either talks over the other.
That is the best way to have an evolving discussion.
Good luck Obama!!

Requests for free advertising masquerading as debate challenges. A standard Clinton tactical maneuver. Do we *really* need more debates? Did someone miss something in the first 21?
I am truly becoming to hate politics. It's all about the million and billionaire
Clubs, the media pundits who sway it one way or the other. It's always about
men power positioning.
For the first time in Women's History, the female block voters, are the strongest
ever on record. Americans are acutley aware of the black block voters, and
will spend days on end bringing it to surface. When it comes to women, no body seems to be working overtime her for, nobody touches on her history, how she was owned by her husband, and could not own property, and could not participate in politics for so many years later than blacks.
For the first time we now have a woman who is a serious candidate, and now
we are playing the money games, and all you want to talk about really is all the support for Obama. Bottom line, I thought Bush & republicans were the cause of
decline in politics, but now know better.
Clinton needs the debates more than Obama--that's why she's pressing for so many.
Just another sign of a desperate candidate who thought she would catwalk into the White House.
In the end, the Republicans will win, because their nominee will be a white male.
I am not supporting this person, but think the Democrats had best get their nominee quicker than later and save the debates until both parties have their nominees.
At this point, tired of it all!
No more debates!
we (the voters) can hear and understand perfectly well what each candidate has to say individually. What does each candidate offer? What wil they do or not do? What are you going to do, how are you going to do it, when are you going to do it. lets concentrate on that. So, get out there and show us your plan. Separatelly please.
We do not need more debates.
Don't debate her, Barack. Travel the country to get your message out. We've had enough debates. If people don't know where you and Clinton stand then they live under a rock.

Obama is afraid to debate because there is no substance. What is he going to do and how is he going to do it. I am a dem. but will have to vote rep. if he wins.
Many dem. feel that way many.

It shows how Hillery Clinton is disparate. She thinks by debating Senator Obama
she will have a better chance to win from him. I hope she is dreaming .
The reason she wants so many debates as one news Caster said: she will
say anything and do anything to win. I am a educated white woman who has
degree in psychology and business both. I talked to few of my friends, and
ask them why you are going to vote for Clinton. Their answer was very
honorable :because she is a woman. I want to see a powerful woman in our
time. These people are looser themselves. What they did not accomplish in
their lives themselves ;they see her to do it for them.
Wouldn't it be prudent to include Plouffe's response that the Obama campaign doens't want to have their rally and campaign appearance schedule determined by the Clinton Campaign? Plouffe also indicated that the Obama camp couldn't say at this point whether they would be willing to debate five times in the next thirty days. This was a smart move considering that the Obama campaign has likely already booked many events before March 4, and to back out now, especially at the whim of another candidate, makes Obama look easily distractible.
Five debates in less than thirty days IS a bit excessive. Two to three at most is a more reasonable number.

Obama is right not to debate. It's not the only way or the best way for people to get a sense of him. He doesn't need to debate.

I did not like the ad that was being displayed on the right side of this page ans asking for a vote on wether Ms Clinton was finished or not. It is very distasteful. Ms Hillary ,no matter if she wins, is a great personality and deserves admiration. She already accomplished a lot. A woman that shines for herself.
If a woman is brilliant, everyone gets angry with her?
Thanks Hillary for being such a role model and for not being scare of using her strength.

Be careful of the Billery team. Some say she could have Bill as her running mate Vice President. Law states no more than 2 terms for a President. Vice President?
Obama would not be considered if she wins the nomination.Who else but Bill.
Mc Cain and Huckaby- my guess. I'm not happy with eather side. Unless congress is changed, what can a President do?

Hillary's last chance would be debates where she could throw out hail mary like attacks at Obama and hope they stick. If I was Obama I would hold on to my advantage. Would Hillary agree to more debates if she was ahead?
The only reason they want more debate is because they do not have the money for visibility on the media. Come on, let's stop twisting and spinning here Ms. Doyle. We are not that stupid.
"too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close..." A valid point that applies not only to Senator Obama, but Senator Clinton as well. If she wants to rely on the experience she gained during her husband's presidency then she should stop stonewalling efforts to release what will ultimately public documents related to his time in office. We as voters deserve to have as much information as possible on our future nominee. What exactly was her role during her husband's eight years in office? Give us an opportunity to get to know you up close and let us decide how we might characterize your eight years in the White House. Release the documents.
Yesterday, Barack Hussein Obama arrogantly stated "I have no doubt that I can get the people who vote for Senator Clinton. ... It's not clear that Senator Clinton can get all the people I'm getting," This is the most racist and sexist remark thus far in this campaign. In other words, if Clinton loses, the majority of her women supporters will vote for me but If I lose, my supporters black people and men will not vote for her. This is such a telling comment from the great "uniter." Obama is the most divisive candidate yet the media doesn't recognize it. They would rather focus on a woman crying when Hillary has a tear.
As far as donations are concerned Obama's supporters make 150,000 a year compared to Hillary supporters who make less than 45,000. Hillary did not ask the media for debates, the various network channels courted her and Obama.
Hillary for president in 08
Clinton machine always manipulates–now wanting to control Obama’s schedule. I am tired of her fake smile and hypo laughing on TV. In one debate, she touted Oakland Mayor’s achievements–green jobs. It made my heart sick. I live in SF Bay Area. Everyday our local news broadcasts homecides, murders, shootings on Oakland streets. This Oakland Mayor, instead of tending to his city’s crisis, follows Hillary everywhere on her campaign trail. It is totally disgusting. That is what you will hear from Hillary at the debate--spinning the Major's inability to stop murders and shootings on Oakland streets into his achievements of green jobs. This is what Hillary presidency does to America as it is doing to Oakland right now.
Obama is drawing the largest crowds of any primary candidate in history to all of his rallies. Hillary needs to debate Obama - it's the only way she can draw that kind of crowds to also see her.
Hillary is smarter than "O" Bamma and she speaks better. It is to her advantage to debate the issues, not his.
Patti Solis Doyle,
"there have already been about 20 debates"... "confirmed face-off, Feb. 27 in Ohio".
I am curious to know how many debates does Clinton's campaign fully intend to have? Both democratic campaign trails are now dispersed throughout several states.
More recently, Barack Obama has participated in the 4 debates immediately before the early states (IA, NH, NV,SC) as well as a debate before Super Tuesday.
I am sure there is a Clinton campaign strategy behind the language "Senator Obama rejected the idea" or "deny voters the opportunity". Sound negative to me...like a page out of the republican smear book.
IWe will have to wait and see... my guess is that MI and FL will be heavily contested at the DNC by Clinton supporterswho will somehow spin a claim that Obama caused them not to be awarded delegates.
As a reminder none of the democratic candidates were allowed to campaign or debate or town/house meeting within MI and FL. Yet Clinton jumps on stage claiming victory. Doesn't sound very fair to Obama, Edwards or any other the other candidates.
Analogy:
Obama and Clinton both apply for a job. Company policy: "All employees get an interview". Obama waits to be called for an interview. Clinton waits to be called for an interview. Both just following the rules.
Clinton gets a call and expects it to be a request for an fair and equal interview...however they tell her that she got the job if she wants it.
"You don't even need to interview" they tell her.
Clinton says "I'll take it." "wow, this is a great day...a day were everyone was fairly and equally interviewed, but I got the job"
Is that democracy? Ask yourself, is she really advocating for democracy or herself when she promises FL voters that she will get thier votes to count. Classic politician.
Baring an upset in the post-Super Tuesday states.... buckle up everyone, it is going to get f-ugly.
FYI
Obama won more delegates in more states on Super Tuesday.
As of 2/7/06 Barack has more pledged delegates (635) than Clinton (630). Pledged delegates are earned by getting votes.
Clinton has more super delegates (193) than Obama (106). super delegates are earned by asking state/federal/agency officials to support the candidate.
Obama wishes to talk to voters directly, not score points in debates. I think that we have a pretty good idea of where they stand on issues, and Hillary, who really doesn't draw crowds, is just looking for free publicity because people turn out for Obama. Also, it is interesting that she appeals to the least educated.
THERE IS NOT MUCH TO DEBATE BETWEEN THE TWO. SHE VOTED FOR THE WAR, HE DID NOT, SHE WANTS MANDATED HEALTH PLAN, HE WANTS AN AFFORDABLE HEALTH PLAN FOR ALL. I THINK WE HAVE EXHAUSTED THE DEBATES. NOW IT IS WHO HAS THE PEOPLE APPEAL, AND CAN RUN THE BEST CAMPAIGN.
It seems to me, we have on Canidate that would be more likely to be used where ever God wants him to be used, and another Canidate that is runninng for the power of the position. For the past 20 years we have had 2 families running our country I think that is too much power for anyone to have. The greastest among you must be the servant of all. I truly beleive that we have a Canidate in Obama that would run the White House and have no shame in taking out the trash as well. What you have done for the least of these my disciples you have done onto me.
All the campaigns are trying to raise money.
I visited the Clinton, Huckabee, McCain, and Obama websites to see responses to the hurricanes that struck 4 southern states. I could only find one on the Obama website, and it asked for thoughts, prayers, and DONATIONS to the Red Cross.
http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/samgrahamfelsen/CGGbz
I did notice that only one current candidate is also trying to raise funds for the victims of the recent hurricanes that hit the southern states this week: http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/samgrahamfelsen/CGGbz

Hmmmm...could it be that the Clintons need the free TV exposure cause they are running out of money???
I really would like another one-on-one. They did a great job sticking to issues last time, but it just seemed to run out of time. What's the harm anyway? Its just an hour or so and it would really help undecided voters.
I want Obama on the campaign trail spreading his message to the people - not wasting our collective time debating Billary. We all know she's the past and has her own built-in vice president too.
