Clinton says 'if' not 'when' she is president

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 19, 2008 05:58 PM

By Susan Milligan, Globe Staff

PARMA, Ohio -- Is Hillary Clinton's confidence slipping?

The New York senator sounded upbeat today as she took questions from a by-invitation-only roundtable discussion in Ohio, a state many political observers believe she must win to stay in the running for the Democratic nomination. She detailed her policy proposals for the mortgage crisis, for foreign policy, and for healthcare.

She talked about sending her husband, former President Bill Clinton, around the world on undetailed missions, and pointed out the success of her husband's trip to Indonesia with former President George H. W. Bush after the tsunami there.

But when asked about running a bipartisan White House, Clinton slipped.

"We will bring into the United States government, if I'm your president, distinguished members of both parties,'' Clinton told the group at a Parma diner.

From the start of her campaign, Clinton has commonly said, "when I am president,'' suggesting she did not envision a scenario in which she might lose.

Clinton is favored to win March 4 in Ohio, where lower-income and labor union voters comprise a substantial part of the electorate. But recent polls show Clinton and Obama in a virtual tie in Texas, also considered a must-win state for her on March 4.

  1. I never want to hear how dumb President Bush is after witnessing the worst political campaign in history run by the smartest woman in the world, Hillary Clinton. If she can't run a campaign, how can she run the country? This woman is pathetic.

  1. People who really care about what happens to this Nation should better inform themselves on the Clintons...both of them as if she wins, it will be both of them again occupying the Nation's House....the White House. Read "MY WAY"...or
ACCESS UNLIMITED...a book by the FBI man assigned to the White House during their time there. Review the actions of the Wife of the President...remember Craig Livingstone? The Travel Department? The missing artwork and furniture when they left the White House? Do we really want to submit this Nation to more of the Clintons? WHile I don't think that Barack Obama is ready for such an office...I think it's the disgust and mistrust that people have of the Clintons that is propelling his campaign! This is unfortunate. I'd have trouble voting to put a man in the presidency who won't even wear an American flag lapel pin, or say the Pledge.

  1. Maybe Hillary is worried about the election in November. When you depend on the votes of the labor union voters, you have to promise them the moon and the stars.

The Democratic Party is permitting labor unions to dictate American foreign policy in Latin America.

America has spent billions of tax dollars to stabilize Colombia – the second largest Spanish speaking Latino nation in the world.

American unions demand that the Democrats punish Colombia for being pro-American and standing up to Hugo Chavez by rejecting a trade agreement.

They allege that Colombia has not adequately protected trade unionists. The truth is that unionists are protected as much as humanely possible, yet the Democratic Party persists in blocking the trade agreement.

If you think the Democratic Party is pro-Latino, ask them why they are punishing 45 million Latinos in Colombia.

  1. Observing Bill Clinton's almost daily petulant temper tantrums when an audience member expresses support for the Obama candidacy suggests that Slick is very close to loosing it. The "serial groper" is unable to accept the fact that he's trying to peddle a defective product; i.e. Hillary. This is a woman who hasn't managed so much as a corner vegetable stand, or for that matter her own marriage; but, of course you could count Whitewater, and her tenure as "Madam" for Bill's White House Brothel. So what possibly is there that qualifies Bill's official "Bimbo Containment Chief" for the Presidency? Further, Hillary's increasingly frequent crying jags raises a legitimate concern about her mental stability. But, having meticulously planned their coveted return to the White House for several years now, the Clintons will certainly not exit the scene with grace or dignity. This is the political duo that honed "The Politics Of Personal Destruction" into an artform; and, most certainly will not tolerate, who is in their mind, the "upstart Obama" to derail Hillary's pre-choreographed coronation. What happened, Mark Penn? Hillary wouldn't spring an extra $million for you to test "if" vs. "when"?

Mark Penn is sure "earning" his millions, soaking the Clinton campaign 24/7.
0-10. Average margin of loss 33 percent. Great job Mark Penn.

  1. Senator Clinton continually refers to her "35 years" of experience.

We all know that's a joke, but no one challenges it.

Nevertheless, even assuming any validity to the proposition, how, with such vast experience that only she "is ready to be Commander in Chief on day 1," can it be that Senator Clinton isn't even ready to command a competent presidential campaign still this late in the game?

If she can't learn on the job, now months and months into her campaign, can she be trusted to learn on the job as President?

  1. I think it would be best for all concerned if Hillary quits the campaign now. Think about how much money is being wasted! She loaned millions of dollars to her own campaign and it hasn't worked at all!

Hillary lost ten primaries/caucuses in a row. This says something! Perhaps she will come to realize that the people are tired of her campaign's vicious mudslinging! We're tired of her nastiness, we're tired of the finance issues, unpaid staff, her unwillingness to apologize for her vote on the Iraq war, her public crying spells, her pouting over the "pimping" remark, etc...I could go on, but there's not enough room.

  1. Remember, these are the Klintons. Like the word "is," one must really look into the meaning of the word "if." "If" only means "if," when applied to the rest of us minions. To the Klintons, "if" has many meanings. So, one must seek enlightenment from the Klintons before understanding the real meaning of the word "if." And then you will be even more confused. But it does not matter. Why? Because to disagree means they will go into a long winded disertation that will not make sense and it will hurt your head. but you know better than to get ask again for a straigh answer. Because you know you will not get one. So you nod your head and look at them through the corner of you eye. The walk away very very confused.

  1. For years the Clintons divided the country into factions against what they referred to as "the establishment". Now, when she wants to be the ruler, she is seen as the establishment and the factions are rejecting her. It is down right Shakespearean that she should suffer such an ugly momentous fate. The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy is certainly not to blame. Don't you know that their house was an unhappy place before all of this, now it is probably true hell on earth for both of them.

    Jackie,

The rumors that Sen. Obama refuses to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, took his oath on the Koran, etc. were started to try and degrade his image and are simply not true. The same was done to Sen. McCain in 2000 with rumors that he fathered an illegitimate child. Nothing more than smear campaigns.

He will take the center and through indomitable character, experience and sound policies prevail. Having said that, I am not a big fan and tend to be more conservative, but for the difficult decisions that lie ahead, for the economy and national security, I trust his judgment far more than either of his potential rivals and I believe the majority of voting Americans will to.

She admirably smeared them and exposed them for what they are. She deserves kudos for saving her marriage and setting Bill on the right path. Look at her achievements in health care. Look at her excellent job in reorganinzing the travel department at the white house. Also look at the excellent records she kept during the Foster debacle. And she personally protected citizens by guarding certain FBI files. She did this even though those folks were Republican. We definitely need Hillary's vast experience. It will take years for Obama to learn what comes so naturally to Hillary. GO team Clinton

Obama's the feel good guy with no record of real legislative dicipline or success. Hillary likes to talk about her years of experience. But she has srewed up just about every task she's undertaken. She can't manage her husband, her campaign or her own obvious arrogance. The irony of it all is the Clintons will finally be undone by the very liberals who lionized them for years. So much for that vast right-wing conspiracy.

But, yes, Barack Hussein Obama will be the Democrat nominee--unless the Clinton Machine fully disregards the will of the voters. Those of us who are aghast at Hillary's inexperience and use of political office for self-aggrandizement shouldn't be overly full of glee. B. Hussein Obama is way more liberal than Hillary. Are you really bringing up Obama's lapel pin/pledge issue after all this time? He has explained himself on both issues. He doesnt not wear the lapel pin because its nothing more then a meaningless gesture by politicians to show how patriotic they are, and he doesnt want to be a part of that. Which I personally fully support, he wants to be his own person, just because every other politician started wearing pins after 9/11 to act patriotic doesnt make it blasphemous not to wear one.

And as for the pledge, it was not the pledge that he did not say, the photo in question was taken during the national anthem, which you are not required to sing along to

But SHE is losing because she is old (compared to Barack), she is "the past", and people are looking to the future, not looking "back to the future". She has promised so many things (like the $9.25 minimum wage for example) and everything else that people can see right through her. She is a phony. To put it simply, people are just s-i-c-k of her. She would do herself a huge service if she would just (try) to graciously step aside and make her bid for Majority Leader of the Dem party in the Senate.

You're right that Senator Obama has refrained from wearing an American flag lapel pin. However, I believe you're mistaken as to why. In fact, you are wrong when you state that he refuses to say the pledge of allegiance. He has in fact led the pledge many times from the floor of the Senate. If you don't believe me, check out sites like snopes.com or urbanlegends.

  1. The Last thing our great country needs is another chronic and hibitual Clinton liar in the White House. Does anyone recall the number of investigations by special prosecuters and grand jurries of the Clinton adminstration? Not to mention the fact that Willy lost his law license and paid $100,000 FINE to a federal court judge for LYING!!! Or the final slap in the face, the pardoning of the worst crook in US History, Mark Rich , whos wife later donated $$$ to his library fund and took the 5th amendment in front of a Federal Grand Jury.......as well as Hillary's crooked jewish group in northern New York, who then donated tons of $$$$ to her campaign for Senator. This is a despicable two some.....its all about money and power with them.....it always has been!! Lastly, I am sure NO ONE remembers that milllions of americans lost their life savings in the last Clinton year when the stock market tanked to the $7000 level, wiping out BILLIONS of $$$ investments. Yes, by all means, lets forget the real truth about Bill & Hilliary.

The Mayor of New York Jimmy Walker in the 1920's who left office under a cloud, said it better than anyone ever has. The Public always gets what it deserves!!!

  1. Maybe she will say

It depends on what the meaning of IF is ha ha
If she gets in when they leave again, nail down everything in the white house.
    Her experience
fighting for the black panthers when they were in trouble with the law.
She is a socialist and socialist rule will ruine this country. We have to many of them now in Washington.

  1. No big deal here....

Clinton and Obama both know it's an "IF" until one wins.

Unfortunately this doesn't stop the Nastiness, Arrogance, and Egomania of the Obama campaign.

Hillary Rodham Clinton is way more down to earth on this; I feel good about voting her in Laredo TX today (early voting).

  1. Why are the Clintons still in the race for the party nomination? They should have realized by now that we don't want them near the White House. They should give a chance to the new generation and go away already. What's all this experience she has that they keep talking about? She's is just a senator as Sr. Obama is, or is she also counting the years she's been married to her husband? We now know that the Clintons want to steal the nomination from senator Obama, but even if they manage to do so I will not be voting for them.

  1. That George W. Bush is so dumb. He flooded New Orleans and moved thousands of OBama supporters to Houston where they will convienently be available to destroy Hillary Clinton's chances at the White House. I think it was all a secret Karl Rove / W conspiracy . Maybe next time Hillary " NOt Close and NO CIGAR " . Nevermind, Bill uses the cigars in that family I forgot . HAHA

  1. "Europe conceded to Hitler and now after the Americans who never left there city made them free never again will America save Europe from itself "

    WTF?

you lost less than a million men fighting less than 15% of the enemy forces.

you refused to declar war on germany until after they attacked you.

10% of your casualties were from your own stupid artillery.

at the d-day beaches your one of your toughest divisions dropped their weapons and refused to move from under a cliff......................coz they were scared....

Russia lost 25 million soldiers and 20 million civilians while fighting 80% of the enemy forces.

gestapo officers used waterboarding as the first of three torture techniques to break the will of the heroic resistance members in france and now you do the same......?

Go read some history books instead of watching john wayne movies.

What has gone wrong with your country?

when will you learn that peoples lives matter more than your wealth?

  1. There r two things a patriot can do, ONE, NOT VOTE FOR HILLARY, TWO, TO LAUGH AT HER

Watch HILLARY get MOONED by a guy in a blue dress, posing as MONICA, at one of her rallies!

  1. So Hillary will bring in "distinguished members of both parties". To do what? I thought she said she had all of the answers, being the smartest woman in the world. Is she admitting she can't do the job completely? And using Monica's ex-boyfriend to travel the world? Is that a co-presidency?

President Bush brought in "distinguished members of both parties" and was highly criticized by Democrats each time, in a mocking tone. He invited Sen. Kennedy over for movies and popcorn and let him write the education bill. He's been doing this for eight years.

So this is "change" in Hillary's eyes? She's planning to do the same thing that President Bush has been doing, What kind of change is that?

McAuliffe and others are seeking suggestions from Clinton supporters as to how to perform better. Quit dressing her in yellow - all blondes know that this usually makes hair look brassier. Also, the light green outfits don't work either as it makes her hair look greenish.

Maybe they should take a long look at what Hillary's biggest problem is: BUBBA. Having him wander around the White House and World with nothing to do is probably the biggest reason ever for keeping Hillary out of the White House.

Let's get real: evidently most of the Democrats don't even want Hillary in the White House, not to mention 50% of Americans who don't want her there either.

After Romney lost one state, the feeling was that he should withdraw. Hillary's lost TEN IN A ROW and no one is asking her to withdraw.

BILL CLINTON IS HILLARY'S BIGGEST LIABILITY. She should have realized that from the very beginning.

  1. Hillary illustrates the Peter Principle extremely well. People do tend to rise to their own level of incompetence. Turn out the light, the party's over---go McCain!

  1. Hillary's villainous antics remind us that acts of feudalism continue in our midst. Her most progressive idea is to place our children at imminent risk of serious harm. If that sounds progressive to you, you must be facing the wrong way. When Hillary hears anyone say that she has done inestimable damage to everything around her, her answer is to eliminate the plebiscitary mechanisms which ensure a free and democratic society. That's similar to taking a few drunken swings at a beehive: it just makes me want even more to extend the compass of democracy to mentally unbalanced, snarky hypochondriacs like John McCain, for lack of any alternative.

  1. I HOPE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS UNDERSTOOD THAT BY VOTING FOR OBAMA THE DEMOCRATIC VOTERS ARE STATING THAT THE CHANGE THEY WANT IS A FRESH START AND BY HILLARY STAYING IN THE PARTY BRINGS BACK BAD MEMORY AND SENSITIVE TIME FOR AMERICA AND THIS WILL DIVIDE THE COUNTRY EVEN MORE.
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT AMERICA CANNOT AFFORD RIGHT NOW.

  1. The hateful, vicious personal attacks by both Clintons, in all of their campaigns seems to betray an internal turmoil of personal insecurity. They know they don't belong so they are driven to destroy and conquer.

Craig Livingstone (a Hillary campaign worker) appointed head of security in a White House basement records department -- and no one knew how he got there or who appointed him), Hillary's Futures trading, whitewater, Vince Foster, "Lost" records, subpoenaed records strangely appearing, the day before the Court deadline, on a desk in her outer office -- and "no one knew" where they had been, or how they got there.

How about when Republicans took control of Congress in 1994, to the chagrin of Republican leadership -- Clinton abandoned his agenda and took over the Republican agenda (Republican leadership was livid). This was the ground work that allowed Clinton to have a successful first term, and the economy thrived -- with the Republican plan. (Look it up. Google "Clinton, 1994."

The Clintons would say and do anything for their own personal benefit -- the country be damned.

  1. Hillary's problem has nothing to do with her campaign. The simple truth is the more Americans are exposed to her, the less they like her. She's her party's Romney.

  1. A little humility would have gone a long way. Maybe not spitting in the face of all of the millions of people who actually bothered to vote for her in the last 10 primaries and Caucuses by ignoring them.

The true cult like following are the people who continue to follow a candidate who has not even bothered to thank any of her supporters who have voteded for her since February 5th and still continue to follow her.

    Talk about creepy.

  1. How anyone could support that screeching, obnoxious, lying, Marxist, egomaniacal witch and her disgusting (nuff said) husband is beyond me. As a Republican, part of me was hoping she would win the nomination, because she would have been easier to beat in November, but a big part of me is glad to see her lose at anything, and be put out to pasture. She and her husband should actually both be in jail, in my humble opinion.

  1. I agree with the comment that Hillary has not run a good campaign, yet she endlessly goes on about how experienced and ready she is to run the country. She made a wrong assumption at the beginning (that she was inevitable), she surrounded herself with loyalists rather than competent people (reminiscent of what people say is wrong with Bush's White House), she allowed her funds to be mismanaged and, on another arrogant assumption, didn't plan beyond Feb. 5th in strategy or allocation of resources. After proclaiming Texas was her last stand, she realized she and her advisers did not understand the labyrinthine delegate allocation system there. This woman can run our country? This person can see far enough ahead to deal with the world's problems? Please.

  1. Your paper, which has drank the koolaid for a candidate who has to steal other peoples speeches because he has no original thoughts of his own, skips out on tough decisions,, and is unqualified for the job--you worry about when vs if? I have got news for you--with any candidate it is always if. And in the case of your golden calf it is may turn out to be apres Rezko le deluge. Could it be that your editorial bias is showing, The Hitlerjugen and magoos are with you I am sure, By the way I am an independent but I have low tolerrance for this kind of nonsense. My feelings in this respect are shared by others as well. Perhaps the toughest part however is how you and the H&M crowd are setting us up for 4 more years of Republican rule after the machine gets done with your candidate, They never learn

  1. I'm a florida resident. My fuse is short. When will Howard Dean wake-up. Most of the little people[Dems] our furrious that they won't count our votes. Thy are trying to find a way that is fair. We the people of florida say count our votes as voted on our primary day. After all both names were on the ballot, they did'nt campain here, except for Obama running some ads from Orlando North to tallahassee to Jacksonville. We feel that any other compromise would not work, becaouse their running on the most votes cast per canditate. Just to split delegets would be disinfracising each voter. I dare say anyone that thinks we will still vote democratic or otherwise in the general election is sadly mistaken. You higher ups better come up with a solution that will let our voices &votes count!!!! kATHY a concerned DEMOCRATE[ you do want thw white house back don't you
