Clinton says Obama saying 'No, we can't' on healthcare

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 8, 2008 02:49 PM

Hillary Clinton, campaigning in Washington state today, emphasized her universal healthcare plan -- and managed to get in a little dig at rival Barack Obama's ubiquitous campaign slogan.

Clinton pointed out, yet again, that she proposes to cover all Americans with health insurance, while some estimates say Obama's plan would leave out 15 million people. The bone of contention is that Clinton would require individuals to obtain coverage, while Obama would not, saying the real problem is that people can't afford insurance.

But Clinton, turning around Obama's "Yes, we can," chant, said he is saying, "No we can't" on universal coverage.

"I say yes we can and yes we will," she told supporters in Tacoma.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton issued this response: "As Senator Kennedy said, elect Barack Obama and we'll get universal health care. Senator Obama's universal health care plan does more to cut costs than Senator Clinton's -- up to $2,500 for the typical family -- while Senator Clinton would force even those who can't afford it to buy health care, and has said she will potentially 'go after' people’s wages if they don't. It's an important difference -- Senator Obama thinks that the reason people don't have health insurance is because they can’t afford it, not because Senator Clinton hasn't forced them to buy it."

Clinton also said that if Saturday's contest were a primary, when voters can go to the polls at their convenience, she would be more confident of winning.

But it is a caucus when voters only have three hours, and Obama has done better in the caucuses so far. Clinton said she talked to nurses who support her, but said they would be working during the caucus.

"I need all of you to redouble your efforts to get to the caucuses tomorrow," she urged supporters.

  1. ow can anyone think that Hillary is fantastic? Reread all of the research; she has worked on universal health care for 20-30 years. Why hasn't she been able to have it passed in the U.S. Legislature? Hillary Clinton is so divisive; universal health care will NEVER happen if she becomes President. Hillary cannot make universal health care happen by HERSELF!

Obama has a plan for everyone to have health care. It WILL happen under Obama's Presidency; he has the leadership skills and the personality to draw individuals to work together.

Obama will be our next President: Obama 08!

  1. Senator Kennedy said, "Elect Barack Obama and we'll get universal health care."

Thank you, Mr. Establishment for your recommendation.

Obama's vision of health care leaves out 15 million Americans ... And by doing so, his plan elevates to cost of insurance for everyone?

    Does that make any sense?

We can maintain the best health care system in the world and cover all Americans!

    Go Hillary Go!

  1. We need Hillary not a "movement" Our country does not need Obama and his grandious ideas about huge change. We simply need a strong leader capable of pulling the levers of our country.

Vote for Hillary!! Every vote counts

  1. Hillary does not deserve to be our first female president. She has run on her husband's record. She has used the gender card, the emotion card, the race card, the fear card, etc. etc. My heart sinks to think that she and her husband will likely regain control of this country. I was not surprised she said 'No, we can't' today. She is so petty and negative. I would be embarassed to have her be our first female president. I simply hope that Obama can pull this off despite the odds being against him from the beginning. YES, WE CAN. Hoping....OBAMA, 08!

  1. We remember that Hillary Clinton touted a health care plan when her husband first came to office. But she's proven unable to get it done. Now she's making promises again. That's her 'history of leadership', if there's any besides co-leading this country with into a fatal war.

  1. We switched from Obama to Hillary last month, with no regrets. Obama is conveniently glossing over the health coverage issue. He is wrong to do this and we feel he is attempting to deceive the American people.

  1. Once again, Hillary is trying to jump onto the Obama bandwagon... first she announced she also raised a lot of money after the Obama campaign said they would stop, and now she's trying to ride the wave of "Yes We Can!".

What a joke - Hillary has lost all momentum.

  1. Go Hillary! Twist those words, girl! You know Obama is really saying no to a mandate that would strip away Americans' freedom to choose to participate in universal healthcare. But you say yes to that. You say yes to the erosion of personal liberty, a foundation on which this country was built. You say let's mandate everyone sign up for my healthcare plan or else. Obama says parents, I'll make you sign up your children, but I will respect you as adults and let you make your own decisions about yourself-- but I'll make it affordable for you if you want it. How dare he.
