Clinton: Schedule as strategy

Posted by James F. Smith February 26, 2008 07:24 PM

Hillary Clinton's campaign has been guarded about disclosing the candidate's travel plans -- apparently not wanting to tip her strategic hand to competitors. That's not unusual. Most of the presidential candidates have given only a couple days' advance notice of upcoming trips.

Today, however, the Clinton campaign threw down the scheduling gauntlet, revealing Clinton's travel program right up to the eve of the make-or-break ballots in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont on Tuesday. Indeed, campaign aides Mark Penn and Phil Singer turned the schedule announcement into an expression of Clinton's platform and her character.

"In the countdown to March 4th, we have developed a schedule that demonstrates momentum and underscores Hillary's strengths and experience on the national security front and in her approach to solving our economic challenges," Penn and Singer said. "This schedule reinforces our larger message: Hillary is in the solutions business. She will be ready on Day One to solve our urgent problems and stand up for the voiceless...."

The announcement reads like a response to the growing criticism of the Clinton campaign in recent weeks as Barack Obama has surged in opinion polls and peeled off 11 straight primary and caucus victories. The pundits have suggested she has lost focus with a scatter-shot approach on issues and messages.

--Wednesday: Economic Solutions Summit, "hearing about the real problems people face and the solutions they bring to the table," Zanesville, OH.
--Thursday: "Child Poverty -- Giving Every Child a Chance," Appalachia, OH.
--Friday: Veterans Event: surrounded by veterans and retired officers. Texas.
--Saturday: Get-out-the-vote tour of the state of Texas.
--Sunday: Caravan for Clinton. Friends of Hillary caravan for her across Ohio.
--Monday: Texas-sized Town Hall, on-line and televised forums in eight Texas markets.

The memo also seems to respond to suggestions that Obama has opened up an enthusiasm gap: "Our message complements our organizational strength on the ground in Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont, including 41,000 volunteers in Texas and 26,000 volunteers in Ohio."

Penn and Singer note that the the campaign has turned out an army of surrogates including not only Bill and Chelsea Clinton but governors, senators, athletes and artists, among them Keyshawn Johnson and Lily Tomlin.

  1. YOU MIGHT BE AN IDIOT:-)

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary's than they had ever been before or since.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

    Best regards
