Clinton's debate migration

Posted by Sasha Issenberg February 21, 2008 10:54 PM

AUSTIN -- In October, Hillary Clinton wouldn’t commit to supporting a plan for New York’s illegal immigrants to get drivers’ licenses and she wouldn’t come out against it. Tonight she was not quite so cautious.

In response to a debate question here, Clinton said she would shut down the raids conducted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities on homes and workplaces suspected of harboring illegal immigrants and volunteered -- apparently for the first time -- that she would pursue comprehensive-immigration reform during her first hundred days as president.

Clinton’s new willingness to take the types of stands that would have been pilloried as soft on immigration is a sign of how much has changed since the fall. Clinton won many of last year’s debates while never committing to anything that would cause her general-election trouble, but is now focused fully on winning the Democratic nomination instead of keeping her options open in the fall.

On immigration in particular, Clinton has been freed by the likely nomination of John McCain, a moderate on immigration who beat a series of hard-line Republican rivals and has pushed the center of the general-election debate leftward. If Clinton had been asked about drivers’ licenses tonight, she might not have been as afraid to answer.

  1. There are more than 30 millions of third world invaders who don't belong here yet neither Clinton, McCain or Obama will do anything about them in order to get the minority vote.
This is a shame. America's culture and civilization is at stake here and right now it's for sale for political gains. No matter who wins, the're all the same, the USA will continue to go downhill toward becoming a relic of the past.

  1. My racist friend- Our country is founded by immigrants, therefore immigration is part of the make- up of our culture. It is false to believe that our culture is at stake when we depend on them for jobs nobody wants. Welcome to the modern world, it is full of competition.

  1. I think it is the Republicans who are most guilty of exploiting the immigration issue for political gains.

I cannot understand why America isn't more welcoming to newcomers.

Instead of pushing people away, we should be capitalizing on their desire to join us and turn them all into good Americans.

We will become stronger if we are more inclusive- weaker if we waste our strength ferreting out poor people trying to better themselves.

The newcomers to America will see either a Christian helping hand or a racist's sneering face.

  1. I think Hillary has a more realistic approach toward immigration than the immigration proposals I've heard from Obama and McCain. Hillary said that she would actually talk with people who live on the border to engage them in helping the government craft the right solution to ending illegal immigration.

I think it's a really great idea b/c the people who live on the border may be able to offer unique approaches on the problem that government officials all the way in Washington have so far been overlooking.

  1. Months ago. I posted my comments and didn't follow up on the issue. I would like to say to J. Adams that contrary to what he/she says this country was built only by Whites. That is, White-Europeans and nobody else.
His "racist" label doesn't change my views on the millions of third-world invaders who have no business being here or in any of the White Countries.
