In cash wars, Obama cleans up in New England

MINNEAPOLIS -- We’re hopping around the country with Hillary Clinton, but we can still hear the Obama folks crowing back in Boston about how they creamed the Clinton campaign in fundraising in New England last year. Except in Rhode Island, where Clinton cleaned up, and Connecticut, where they were pretty close.

In the less populated northern New England states, one likely explanation is the fact that Obama has done especially well with small donors who aren’t traditionally involved in politics.

Here are the (rounded) figures, which were reported by the FEC a few days ago:

Connecticut: Obama $2 million, Clinton $1.8 million.

Maine: Obama $343,000, Clinton $78,000

Massachusetts: Obama $3.7 million, Clinton $2.8 million

New Hampshire: Obama $341,000, Clinton $127,000

Rhode Island: Obama $156,000, Clinton $471,000

Vermont: Obama $401,000, Clinton $47,000
