Kennedy has fans in East L.A.

LOS ANGELES -- So maybe he's not as young as he used to be. And that trademark chiseled face has acquired a few more lines in the past four decades.

But to the hundreds of East Los Angeles residents who turned out to see the senior Massachusetts senator this morning, Edward M. Kennedy is still a Democratic rock star.

"Teddy! Teddy!'' they yelled at the senator, who was stumping here yesterday for Illinois Senator Barack Obama. And they chuckled affectionately when Kennedy spoke Spanish with a strong Boston accent. "Vamos a ganar en Noviembiembre,'' Kennedy declared, adding an extra syllable to the Spanish word for "November.''

When the group laughed, Kennedy explained, ``there may be some who don't understand my Spanish. It's a Castillo accent.''

After his remarks -- in which he invoked the memory of his late brother, President John F. Kennedy, comparing him to Obama -- Kennedy was swarmed by fans, who pressed up against him and thrust pieces of paper at him, pleading for autographs. The security detail had to push people away to maneuver the 75-year-old Kennedy into a holding room where he did interviews with local reporters.

Kennedy said while "there are not great differences" between Obama and his rival, New York Senator Hillary Clinton, in terms of the issues, Obama has "an inspirational difference ... a transformative attitude."

Kennedy, who gave Obama his coveted endorsement earlier this week, will follow his campaign stops in New Mexico and California with travels to Connecticut, New Jersey and Massachusetts, all states which will vote on Super Tuesday.

  1. Congratulations to Ted for speaking out at this time. As a young person I grew up in south Boston and very early learned the difference between givers and takers. The Kennedy Family have always been givers for many decades, The Clintons and Bushes have always been TAKERS. The Kennedys were supporters of the great Chicao Leader Cesar Chavez. they spoke out when many others failed to support the Farmwokers. Along with the then Bishop, Cardinal Mahony they faced the attacks of business and other corporate entities that tried to exploit the farmworkers. Now in my life in California I see the need for the same type of courage to face the fascists who have risen to blame immigrants for the faults of a selfish and deceitful government. Only Communist and Fascist Countries build WALLS around and in themselves. The United states and Israel deserve condemnation for their WALLS. Senator Obama represents a return to the sane and sensible government that the Kennedys have represented. Like Caroline Kennedy I feel I can vote for a man like her father. Twenty years of Bush and Clinton are enough , enough deception , enough deceit and enough stupidity PJM

  1. With friends like Teddy Kennedy who needs enemies. As Kennedy stated the differences between the two candidates are not much, but nostalgia has taken over and he is still dreaming of what might have been. Obama is inspirational because his speech writer borrows the style of JFK and Martin Luther King Jr. Obama has a deep voice which appeals to some people, but he is not fluent in his speech if he doesn't have it written down. He fumbles and mumbles a lot when he is in the debate, and instead of getting to the point, goes around in circles and not really answer the specific question.
That is what the Clintons get for being friends with a traitor. Remember when Bill Clinton used the military planes to help search for JfK Jr? Bill, Hill and Chelsea were at the funeral/memorial for John Kennedy Jr. The least Kennedy should have done is wait until after the primary to support the eventual nominee.
Ted may be mobbed in L.A., but this voter and her mother will no longer vote for Kennedy in Massachusetts. Hopefully Massachusetts voters will not be influenced by him and his rich out of touch niece (Caroline) to vote for Obama.

  1. I agree with Mr. Kennedy. Obama inspires and motivates. He is also a better representative of what the USA represents to the world and what we profess to be; a melting pot.

I stand behind Mr. Obama and his issues and from his life experiences, he should have a much better idea of what the majority of people in the USA need.

He has already demonstrated creativity, determination and hard work in Illinois as well as on the campaign trail that have lead to change where change was said to be impossible. Combine experience with creativity, determination and hard work, throw in morality and you have the kind of man Americans, and the rest of the world can respect.

If we admire, respect and support our president and he is working for the people, we, together, can bring about lasting change in our country.

Mrs. Obama is pretty fabulous herself. She is a well spoken, thoughtful and inspiring speaker. This is an unbeatable combination. I hope that the voters agree in November!
