McCain says he doesn't agree with pastor

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 29, 2008 04:30 PM

John McCain this afternoon distanced himself from -- but did not completely disavow -- an endorsement from a controversial Texas pastor who critics assail as anti-Catholic.

The Catholic League and the Democratic National Committee both called on McCain to denounce Rev. John Hagee.

McCain's campaign issued a statement in which he said, "In no way did I intend for his endorsement to suggest that I in turn agree with all of Pastor Hagee’s views, which I obviously do not.

"I am hopeful that Catholics, Protestants, and all people of faith who share my vision for the future of America will respond to our message of defending innocent life, traditional marriage, and compassion for the most vulnerable in our society."

  1. which I obviously do not.

It's not obvious to me. Why doesn't the Candidate go ahead and outline the views he DOESN"T agree with?

  1. Wait...McCain did NOT say that he rejects the view that Hagee espouses about Catholics...NOT ONE TIME. Let me hear him say it. Otherwise, he's straddling the issue.
