Nader and Obama, together again

Posted by Sasha Issenberg February 24, 2008 11:09 AM

AUSTIN, Tex. -- If Ralph Nader intends to spoil Barack Obama’s year with a third-party candidacy, it won't be the first time.

"I needed a job closer to the streets" shortly after graduating from college, Obama wrote in his memoir, "Dreams from My Father." "I spent three months working for a Ralph Nader offshoot up in Harlem, trying to convince the minority students at City College about the importance of recycling."

"In six months," Obama went on, "I was broke, unemployed, eating soup from a can."

  1. Does Mr. Nader seriously think he can win or does he just like playing a spoiler anytime a democrat has a good shot at winning the presidency?

  1. Yeah, yeah, dah, dah. I really don't know what is the use of Mr. Nader running. He is a waste of a vote. He's not going to win. Mr. Nader speaks about the poor the average American, true American values. His third party run just perpetuates a system and a culture that obviously has hurt those he claims to be looking out for. No, I'm not buying into hin non-sense. I'm going to donate more to Obama. Nader, is just a loser, and so are those dumb enough to cast a vote for him.

  1. Perhaps news of Nader's run should finally draw attention to our out-of-date electoral system, where the candidate with the most votes wins even if no one has a majority. We could solve this problem by adopting instant runoff voting (IRV). IRV is a simple and more fair way to vote: First, you rank your choices in order of preference. Then, the first choices are counted, and if someone gets a majority, they win; but if no candidate gets a majority, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their supporters' votes count for their second choices instead. IRV is so simple, common-sense, and democratic that both the major parties' front-runners, McCain and Obama, publicly support it. You can learn more at: www.fairvote.org.

  1. Ralph is out of touch with political reality. If there was a year to back out, it is 2008. It makes me wonder about him... is he a neo-con in sheep's clothing? Give me a break Ralph. We need you for the cause, not against it.

  1. Sorry Ralph Nader didn't make Obama rich. Obama did better later on when he made the right connections to the world of lobbyists and corporate influence. Nader has the annoying habit of reminding America why even Obama with all of beautiful words, won't bear down credit card debt servitude, the living wage, a truly universal health care system and all the other things that are taboos of in the corporate world of American politics. No wonder they want him to shut up and go away.

  1. Ralph Hasn't been hiding anywhere the last 8 years. He's been out there making speeches, doing interviews and writing articles and has written at least three books in the last 6 years. Also he writes weekly commentary at www.nader.org .The better question is where has the Press been, where have the "Talking Heads" been. And the population is to busy being entertained and watching Sporting events to get involved, they take the easy route and don't THINK DEEP, settling instead for for snippets and quick slogans. Knowing what' s going on takes work, in a Corporate controlled State.
Thank you Ralph, for all the good things you've done to protect the PEOPLE of this Country. Amazing how quickly they forget, or perhaps they just don't know. Almost everyone's lives, or that of friends and relatives of theirs, has been improved and made safer because of you, Some wouldn't be alive today, if not for Ralph Nader! Their minds have been intentionly bombarded with with Corporate propaganda and the Democrat Party scapegoating machine. Obama and Clinton should be ashamed of their comments regarding you. They continue DNC myth. thank you for your great and continued service to your fellow Countrymen. More power to your ideas. www.votenader.org. And by the way, Happy Birthday! ..All the rest of you, buckle-up

  1. Nader's run has nothing to do with "spoiling' or personal attention. Ralph Nader is inspiring Barack Obama to be even better than he already is. He has no interest in actually becoming the President, only to point out the gaps and what actually has to be done to truly improve our state. He raises the bar even higher for the intentions we have for our leader!

  1. I think a running tally should be kept so we can find out how many antisemites Obama can hang out with until the Jewish vote completely abandons him.
