Obama leads in Texas, tied in Ohio, polls say

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 29, 2008 10:09 AM

New polls show Barack Obama with a lead in Texas and virtually tied with Hillary Clinton in Ohio with the two states' primaries on Tuesday possibly deciding the Democratic nomination.

The Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby survey shows Obama with a 48 percent to 42 percent edge in Texas. Another survey in Ohio gives Clinton a 44 percent to 41.5 percent lead, but that edge is within the margin of error. Both surveys were conducted Tuesday through Thursday and have a sampling error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

On the Republican side, where John McCain could mathematically clinch the nomination with strong showings, the polls show that he holds sizable leads in both states over Mike Huckabee. McCain leads 53 percent to 27 percent in Texas and 62 percent to 19 percent in Ohio, according to the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby surveys. The third remaining GOP candidate, Ron Paul, has 11 percent support in Texas and 8 percent in Ohio, the surveys say.

  1. If Obama does not win in TEXAS, it will be because many people do not understand the two times they must vote in. The Feb. vote was called early voting, but it's meant for the local officials running too. Some voting places do have a volunteer explainging to people the process. But, some are Anglo in the most hispanic area of town!!!

If it is meant for Obama to win then he will!

  1. One of the key arguments in Mr.Obama’s speech is that he has better judgment on issues. Well, I am finding more and more on this topic.
    a) He gave a speech saying no to war but when it did mattered like his senate campaign he was for war. It’s easy to vote no when you don’t have responsibilities and facts in front of you.

    b) He was for NAFTA when he ran for senate now he wants to re-negotiate it.

    c) One of the biggest possessions an average person has is his/her house. It’s where you raise your family and watch your kids grow. In Mr. Obama’s case the purchase was subsidized by Mr.Rezko’s and his wife and also got help purchasing the adjacent property next to it. Talk about judgment, he knew Mr.Rezko was under federal investigation when this happened.

    d) He did took money from lobbyist when he ran for senate

    e) His association to the Trinity church

All these are coming out this late because I don’t think he was tested on his campaign for his senate seat. The original candidate dropped out due to some personnel issues, and then they have to bring in another candidate from out of state at the last minute. If the Rep’s can derail a decorated veteran and less liberal than Mr. Obama, personally I think he has no shot in November as more and more things comes out.

States which have not voted yet please do the right thing.

  1. In the end given the proportional allocation of delegates it doesn't matter weather Senator Clinton wins or not unless she wins with more than double digits which appears at this point as highly unlikely. The Clinton campaign keeps on resetting their "firewalls" so where they have said she must win Ohio and Texas more likely than not the states will be split between Senator Obama and Clinton. My fear is that even with Senator Obama having more popular votes or pledged delegates or both Senator Clinton with at least a win in one of the big states will continue on and try to strong arm the nomination or broker a back room deal as her behavior does not give the impression that she will opt for a more gracious option. At that point the Clinton campaign won't have a firewall but a firestorm on their hands. dividividing

We need to be respected in the world community and not have a leader that wells up when they are tired or starts bad mouthing everything when things aren't going their way. 1. Jeez, what is wrong here...It seems that there will be another "well qualified" president who has no experience, no knowledge of the world, and the people have no clue about who is behind him.

Honestly, has anyone looked at the "great change Barack Obama's" team? They are the same old faces.... and he is the change agent.... The only problem I can see is this: although the polls currently show that he has more chance to beat the Republican nominee, I do not buy into that. That is because Mr. Obama got an excellent free ride with the media. No body really questions how he made close to $700,000 on his house with his slamlord buddy. The list can go on... (e.g. nuclear support, terrible voting record, changing positions the way how the wind blows, did nothing in the senate....)

I mean, with all do respect if I want to hire somebody to get the job done I look for the experience. He just does not have it. It was ridiculous watching the debates as he refrased what HRC said. Even the Saturday Night Live made fun out of him.

As I said, just wait for the Republican attack machine....there is no way that with his past can win. And if he won??? God save America.....

I am an old debate coach, and I have no doubt that she would have faired much better if she had carved out a "TRUTH" niche for her CONSTANT campaign and used it to RUN AGAINST GEORGE BUSH and his prevarications, dissemblings, lies, half-truths and cover-ups. Hillary needed to constantly run against the heavily-held view of the Bush reputation. She missed her chance and it's too late now. She would be best advised now to gracefully bow out.

Bring people from all races, gender, ethnicity, parties, political affiliation together for the common good.
Politic of hope the gets people involved instead of politics of fear.
    Getting over our racial divide.
Getting ride of the big corporations out of our government.

My son is voting for the first time and he is for Obama because of the fire he emits. The difference between O and C is virtually tied on policy but I still think experience is important and I vote Hillary. I am from Ga and remember when Jimmy went into office no experience but a good man who wanted change and failed miserably. I don't want that again for our country.

    This I am sure of:

1.There will be CHANGE because the world is not stagnant. It is dynamic and constantly changing, so we can be sure of that.
2.We all HOPE , as has every generation, for a better future.

Hillary Clinton is the only one standing, at this time, between Obama and McCain. I hope she hangs in there and allows more time for adequate scrutiny of her Democratic opponent, or we may have another Republican Administration, should there be any surprises.

  1. The tidal wave that is Obama is about to recede. If Obama gets the nomination, the mainstream media will start scrutinizing him and asking the hard questions of him, the way they should be doing right now - BEFORE we have a nominee!! All the media gushing and fawning will cease, and then they will create the story of a horse race between McCain and him. Media NEEDS to keep interest in the election alive, and a potential huge win by Obama will not be a story that they want.

Mainstream media is owned by big business, and big business will influence the coverage to slant towards the Republican, McCain. It's already happening - look at the way that story about McCain and lobbyists has been dropped by the media!

They will continue to gloss over bad stories about McCain,
then it will be Obama on the receiving end of the bad press, instead of Hillary. Only then it will be too late to have a nominee who can actually take on McCain. WAKE UP TEXAS, OHIO, VERMONT, RHODE ISLAND - YOU CAN STEM THE TIDE!!! VOTE FOR HILLARY!!!

  1. This is in response to #8 an 11

    a) Judgement. Obama gave a speech about the war that was very detailed and it focused on the facts, particularly how ruinous it would be to take our eye off Afghanistan and our ability to fight 2 wars. He was running for Senate and it took a lot of courage for him to make that stand in the days of "if you are not with us, you are against us." If you want to read up more on his thinking go to foreignaffairs.com. Another sign of his good Jugment cam on Pakistan.
    b) Hillary couldn't praise NAFTA enough since it got passed during Bill's administration, before the polls said it was inconvenient. Barack has always pointed out that NAFTA has both good and bad aspects.(Chicago Tribune....long before the polls showed it was convenient.)
    c) The Rezco thing is bad, but nothing in comparison to Hillary's Whitewater.
    d) Barack, if he takes money from lobbysts, it is nothing in comparison to what Hillary takes. The one Lobbyst mentioned in Baracks camp is a lobbyst for the environment. Hillary's are all big corporation guys and lobbysts are running her camapign.(CNN)
    e) His association to the Trinity church. Trinity church does as much good and has as much baggage as any other church.

All these are not coming out late and have been rehashed over and over. By the willingness the Clinton campaign has showed to play dirty (apologies in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and so on) if there was any thing dirt on Obama left, the Clinton would be slinging it. The Obama campaign never throws mud at Clinton, if that doesn't show superior honesty and integrity, what does?

  1. Hey #61 - What kind of stupid comment was that?

Stop the race bashing and stick to the issues!

The Clintons are running a negative campaign and we need a change in the White House. HRC says she has 35 years of experience... she's wrong. All of her experience is Bill's.

    Go Obama!!!!

  1. Obama is extremely good at getting 2000 people to a rally, after all, his pre-political experience is comprised primarily of being a community protest organizer. I don't think he has the experience to run Chicago, let alone the US. People are fools.

  1. If Hillary won, I would choose JohnMcCain. If experience counts in this election, I would rather prefer him. He is more experienced, conservative, hero in the battlefield, as a senator a champion, etc. etc.
I don't trust in Hillary's experience. She's shown again and again she can change colours very quickly. This is not what the American people deserve, i.e., someone like Clinton: manipulative and sarcastic.
    Awake America!

You would go meet with dangerous ppl like castro without pre conditions ok wow....thats pathetic I will vote mccain against obama. Obama had ties with Farrakan as well. He gives awesome speeches and say what ppl want to hear but he has no credentials. This isnt becoming a shift leader at mc donalds this the most important job in America you need to know what your doing. Right now we are walking thin lines with foreign countries we need someone who has history and knowledge. I would love to see him president after he gets experience.

    by Sean Wilentz
How Barack Obama played the race card and blamed Hillary Clinton.

DISCUSS ARTICLE [695] | PRINT | EMAIL ARTICLE

After several weeks of swooning, news reports are finally being filed about the gap between Senator Barack Obama's promises of a pure, soul-cleansing "new" politics and the calculated, deeply dishonest conduct of his actually-existing campaign. But it remains to be seen whether the latest ploy by the Obama camp--over allegations about the circulation of a photograph of Obama in ceremonial Somali dress--will be exposed by the press as the manipulative illusion that it is.

Most of the recent correctives have concerned outrageously deceptive advertisements approved and released by Obama's campaign. First, in Iowa, the Obama camp aired radio ads patterned on the notorious "Harry and Louise" Republican propaganda from 1993, charging falsely that Senator Hillary Clinton's health care proposal would "force those who cannot afford health insurance to buy it, punishing those who won't fall in line." In subsequent primary and caucus campaigns, the Obama campaign sent out millions of mailers, also featuring the "Harry and Louise" motif, falsely claiming that Clinton favored "punishing families who can't afford health care in the first place." A few bloggers and columnists, notably Paul Krugman in The New York Times, described the ads as distorting, but the national press corps mainly ignored them--until Clinton herself, seeing the fraudulent mailers reappear in Ohio over the past weekend, publicly denounced them.

The Obama mass mailings also attempt to appeal to Ohio's labor vote by claiming that Clinton believed that the North American Free Trade Agreement, signed in 1993 by President Bill Clinton, was a "'boon' to our economy." More falsehood: In fact, Clinton had not said that; Newsday originally applied the word "boon" and has now noted the Obama campaign's distortion. In this campaign, Clinton has called for a moratorium on all trade agreements until they are made consistent with labor and environmental standards--and account for the effect on jobs in the United States. Obama makes a big deal about how Bill Clinton signed NAFTA. But he fails to mention that, within the councils of her husband's administration, Hillary Clinton was a skeptic of free trade agreements, and as a senator and candidate she has said that NAFTA contained flaws that need to be rectified. Ignoring all that, the Obama flyer features an alarming photograph of closed plant gates, having no connection to any action of Senator Clinton's, as well as the dubious quotation about her from Newsday in 2006. Newsday has criticized "Obama's use of the quotation" as "misleading ... an example of the kind of slim reeds campaigns use to try and win an office." Obama, without retracting the mailing (and while playing to protectionist sentiment in the party) said only that he would have his staff look into the matter--long after the ad has done its dirty work.

Misleading propaganda is hardly new in American politics --although the adoption of techniques reminiscent of past Republican and special-interest hit jobs, right down to a retread of the fictional couple, seems strangely at odds with a campaign that proclaims it will redeem the country from precisely these sorts of divisive and manipulative tactics. As insidious as these tactics are, though, the Obama campaign's most effective gambits have been far more egregious and dangerous than the hypocritical deployment of deceptive and disingenuous attack ads. To a large degree, the campaign's strategists turned the primary and caucus race to their advantage when they deliberately, falsely, and successfully portrayed Clinton and her campaign as unscrupulous race-baiters--a campaign-within-the-campaign in which the worked-up flap over the Somali costume photograph is but the latest episode. While promoting Obama as a "post-racial" figure, his campaign has purposefully polluted the contest with a new strain of what historically has been the most toxic poison in American politics.

More than any other maneuver, this one has brought Clinton into disrepute with important portions of the Democratic Party. A review of what actually happened shows that the charges that the Clintons played the "race card" were not simply false; they were deliberately manufactured by the Obama camp and trumpeted by a credulous and/or compliant press corps in order to strip away her once formidable majority among black voters and to outrage affluent, college-educated white liberals as well as college students. The Clinton campaign, in fact, has not racialized the campaign, and never had any reason to do so. Rather the Obama campaign and its supporters, well-prepared to play the "race-baiter card" before the primaries began, launched it with a vengeance when Obama ran into dire straits after his losses in New Hampshire and Nevada--and thereby created a campaign myth that has turned into an incontrovertible truth among political pundits, reporters, and various Obama supporters. This development is the latest sad commentary on the malign power of the press, hyping its own favorites and tearing down those it dislikes, to create pseudo-scandals of the sort that hounded Al Gore during the 2000 campaign. It is also a commentary on how race can make American politics go haywire. Above all, it is a commentary on the cutthroat, fraudulent politics that lie at the foundation of Obama's supposedly uplifting campaign.

  1. Muslim people are patriotic, law-abiding people worldwide. Obama had never been and will never be a muslim. Since two years of age, Obama was raised by his christian teen-aged mother, and christian maternal grandparents in America. As an adult, Obama is a dedicated servant of Christ.

It is not fair at all for Obama bashers to keep confusing the American public about Obama's religious affiliation. America is eighty eight percent christians, their votes can make and break any presidential candidate. Identity politic is a fact of life but misleading the good Christian people in order to get Mccan or Clinton wins is a bad politic. So, please stick to the issue.

  1. You might all want to take a look at the Dan Abram's study, from the transcript of his show on MSNBC, 2-27-2008, proving that the news media has been blatantly biased in their coverage of the Obama/Clinton campaigns. The report showed that the media has made roughly 2 to one more negative comments about Sen. Clinton than Sen. Obama.

Just today, they were talking as if the primary was over, I guess Texas, Ohio and Penns, and all the other states who haven't voted yet ought to just hand in your voting rights, your vote counts for nothing, not with the media ready to make this decision for you.

  1. It is time for change.

And George Will recently reminded us about President James Buchanan. He had experience: 8 years as an ambassador, 10 years in the U.S. House of Reps, 10 years as a U.S. Senator, 4 years as the Sec of State. In 1856 he was elected president and in just four years earned the worst president in history award. (The current president may though soon usurp this award). He was followed by a president with only a single 2-year term in Congress. His name was Abraham Lincoln.

  1. Mr. Barck Obama is actually stronger in national security, economy, healthcare, and some of the other issues than either Hillary or McCain. America is at a stage in her life that she needs overhaul. The agent of that overhaul is Obama for such a time as this. His middle name does not matter. He did not give himself the name. He loves everyone, including Israel. What people do not know is that Obama attends one of the strictest Christian denominations that commit very seriously to serving Jesus Christ. Church of Christ is STRICT! A weak Christian cannot attend such a denomination. It is seriously Pentecostal.

NOW Catch this: America cannot be resurrected into vitality and prosperity until significant number of her citizens become energezed by the inspiration, wakening, and motivating spirit that God has embedded in Obama for the benefit of America AT THIS TIME. When people are aroused and awake again, then they can work hard and participate together toward believing and making everything work toward strengthening the economy, family, political system, national security, and building healthy and trusting relationships within America and between America and the rest of the world. That's NATIONAL SECURITY! THAT'S ECONOMIC STRENGTH! THAT'S PEOPLE TRUSTING AND BELIEVING IN AMERICA AGAIN! I am a Professof of Business Administration and strategic management for a long time. Obama is what America needs at this time. World leaders will actually respect him much more than others due to his humble spirit but also quiet inner strength! In fact, terrorists will think much-more than twice before they try to attack any American interests with Obama as President. they already have it in their heads that this man cannot play with them. Obama is more humble than Reagan, but he has a tough demeanor similar to Reagan (if not better) that outside world will fear and respect! He will not make many mistakes and he relatively will not waste resources as many American Presidents have done. He will appropriate resources wisely and monitor their use and who uses them, especially in relations to other nations. Many nations trick the United States into sending the dollars; but the dollars have usually been used to accomplish very little. Most dollars are wasted in highly corrupt foreign leaders who claim to be assisting their nations. Such leaders will find it difficult to try to play Obama. There is so much to write, but I will stop here! Feel free to get the Obama campaign to contact me. I will advise them on how to win the general election. Well, one more thing: I strongly advise the Obam campaign to run this ad in Texas. I am writing it for them right now--- "..... shouldn't the President be the one, the only one that is capable of uniting people and solve problems without letting any problem turn into into crises? the inspiration, my ability to relate to people non-combatantly, and ability to manage or analyze contingencies and draw necessary conclusions and judgments define domestic and national security for America. Such qualification leads to getting problems solved without heading into crises that will bruise and drain America and wound our economy and every other thing! That's REAL security! That's the REAL experience you need! That's Barack Obama! We don't have to use force when we don't have to use force! If experience leads to consistently bad judgments, then what is that experience? You be the judge! Make me your President and let us bring change we can believe in. YES WE CAN!" I wrote this ad based on my analysis of Obama. it is almost a perfect ad for him! Obama: go ahead and run this ad! God bless you, and God bless our America.

My faith in and admiration for America is being rebuilt stronger every time I listen to Barack Obama speak. These are words that touch me and people throughout the globe. These are not just words, but powerful words coming from a man of substance, intelligence & practical Know-How.

I may come from a dot on the map that many Americans may not know about but I'm not blind or death, to remain a world power and restore the love and respect that America might of had in the world, you must elect a president like Barack Obama. I admired Bill Clinton in his era and the brilliance of his wife, but she is not what America needs right now.

  1. Hillary's campaign managers seem frustrated that the GOP big lie tactics just don't seem to work in the Dem. primaries. One reason is the difference in personalities and philosophies of democrats and independents from those of the GOP. The use of unfair, inaccurate and disparaging criticisms --- e.g., HRC campaign advisor's description of Obama as a drug dealer ... undermines her credibility.

All of the 'questions' regarding Rezko ... pale in comparison to HRC's involvement with Hu. --- Get with the zeros! Obama 08!

  1. We hear their words but don't read their minds. Will either candidate keep their promises? History tells us most don't, either because they wouldn't or couldn't. What is sure in my mind is that for most candidates it will be business as usual after 2008. What is also obvious is that a ton of people, mostly young, who never voted are coming out to vote in this election season. These people want to take their country back, for a change! Will they succeed? I'll give them a one in three chance (out of thin air on my part) to restore our democracy. You know which candidate these young people support. For all other candidates, if elected, it will be business as usual. And I quote "I guarantee it".

Obama is honest, he is racially mixed, he hates the Iraq War and I believe he has the right idea to speak with all foreign leaders without telling them to change first. Americans better wake up to the fact that we are falling behind as The Super Power, who should get special priority. Bush started the war, he is responsible for all the lost lives and suffering. Americans should wake up to that fact. George Bush has blood on his hands. Hillary Clinton is a liar, a phony, who will say anything to win power. Did Americans forget Bill Clinton was up on impeachment charges and is campaigning for Hillary. I think the Clinton's ran a dishonest campaign, and would bring the U.S. to more destruction. 1. First, the real reason for dumping Hillary is that, should she be elected, Bill would have free run of the White House again. Why would we want this sexual pervert running around harassing WH interns and soiling the reputation of our great country? We certainly don't need those distractions.

Second, the press has not favored Obama over Clinton. They have just reported the facts that the Clintons have baggage (NAFTA, corruption, multiple scandals and bimbo eruptions, etc.), they lack management skills as shown by their pathetic political campaign, and they just plain don't resonate with the public. There is just more bad news about Hillary than there is about Obama -- that is not distortion, it is simply the truth.

As stated by another poster above, if Hillary gets a call at 3 a.m., it will be to bail BIll out of jail for molesting a minor or to pick him up at the hospital after someone has beaten the crap out of him for his sleazy behavior. Rather than your children being safe, your teenage daughters would be at risk from BC -- the big creep.

The world leaders who know Hillary would abandon her in the same way that the superdelegates are dissing her now. Nobody likes her or respects her or feels any loyalty to her -- they know she cannot be trusted. She thinks the military should be used for government handouts, not for fighting wars. Besides, would anyone really prefer HC over John McCain in an actual global crisis? Come on! Who wants her answering that phone?

If you listen to Bill on the stump, you can tell that he has lost his marbles. Remember, he is only the second US President in history to be impeached, and the Dems actually lost ground at the fed, state, and local levels while he was in office. Do you really want this guy in the news every night?

Let's face it: Hillary is a corrupt liar, and she actually has no "experience" or credibility. In fact, if Hillary actually had some experience, she would release her WH records to document this so-called experience. Instead, she and Bill are blocking the release of her WH records and her tax records in order to hide the truth from the voters. Pray Tell: Why would we want these two "has beens" in the White House again?

  1. Barak Obama... kinda interesting

If you plan to vote...this is something you should know.
The Bible has warned us that 'A man will come from the East that will be charismatic in nature and have proposed solutions for all our problems and his rhetoric will attract many supporters!'

When will our pathetic Nation quit turning their back on God and understand that this man is 'A Muslim'....First, Last and always....and we are AT WAR with the Muslim Nation, whether our bleeding-heart, secular, Liberal friends believe it or not. This man fits every description from the Bible of the 'Anti-Christ'!

I'm just glad to know that there are others that are frightened by this man!

    Who is Barack Obama?

Very interesting and something that should be considered in your choice.

If you do not ever forward anything else, please forward this to all your contacts...this is very scary to think of what lies ahead of us here in our own United States...better heed this and pray about it and share it.

snopes.com ..' confirms this is factual. Check for yourself.

    Who is Barack Obama?

Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHEIST from Wichita , Kansas.

Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii.

When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya. His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia.

When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta. He also spent two years in a Catholic school.

Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is quick to point out that, 'He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school.'

Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that that he is not a radical.

Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son's
    education.

Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham, introduced his stepson to Islam. Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta.

Wahabism is the RADICAL teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background. ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into office he DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran.

Barack Hussein Obama will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegiance nor will he show any reverence for our flag. While others place their hands over their hearts, Obama turns his back to the flag and slouches. Do you want someone like this as your PRESIDENT?

Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential candidacy.

The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the US from the inside out, what better way to start than at the highest level - through the President of the United States, one of their own!

Please forward to everyone you know. Would you want this man leading our country?......
